PAQUITA
Paquita was originally a ballet in two acts and three scenes, composed by Ludwig Minkus and choreographed by Joseph Mazilier. It was staged in 1847 for the first time in Russia for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg by Marius Petipa and PierreFrédéric Malavergne.
Petipa's 1881 additions for Paquita survived long after the full-length ballet left the stage. Today these short pieces, are major cornerstones of the traditional classical ballet repertoire and have often been staged as one act ballets by companies throughout the world to showcase their best dancers.
Ari Thompson appears by Kind Permission of Queensland Ballet. Our heartfelt thanks go to Li Cunxin for this noble gesture to a very humble Sunshine Coast Classical Ballet school.
THE MAGIC TOY SHOP
The Magic Toy Shop also known as La Boutique Fantastique, or The Fantastic Toyshop is a ballet in one act conceived by Léonide Massine. Its world premiere was in 1919 in London and performed by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
Our ballet is set in middle Europe. A toymaker has created exquisite magic dancing dolls, which are being sold in a local toyshop by two shopkeepers. After the shop opens one morning the toys entertain two English ladies and an American family and both families decide to buy a doll. After much acrimony and money troubles the deals are made and the dolls paid for and collection is arranged for the next day.
Darkness descends, but during the night the dolls magically come to life. The two dolls are upset that they are going to be separated and at first they decide to run away but then a plot is hatched to hide them before the customers return in the morning.
When the shop opens the next day, and the customers come in to pick up their dolls, they discover that the dolls are no longer there. The customers, not knowing about the secret life of the dolls, blame the shopkeepers. In the ensuing fracas the dolls come to the two shopkeeper's rescue. Driven out of the shop, the customers watch incredulously from the doorway as the happy dolls and the shopkeepers dance merrily .
SCHEHERAZADE The original one-act ballet was based on the prologue of "The Thousand and One Nights" of which Scheherazade, the legendary Persian queen, is the storyteller.
In the original text the Sultan takes a new wife each night and then has her beheaded the next morning. After having killed thousands of women, he meets Scheherazade.
In our short 20 minute Interlude Scheherazade, advised by her sister Dunyazade offers to tell the Sultan a story in return for sparing her life.
The Sultan listens with awe as Scheherazade with the help of the slaves creates her first tale. The night passes by and so the king spares her life for one day so she can continue to weave wonderful tales.
Thus the Sultan keeps Scheherazade and her sister alive day by day as he eagerly anticipates each story. At the end of our Interlude a colony of Bees swarm around the Sultan driving him out of his palace to the delight of everyone.
We hope you will perhaps recognise Sinbad, Mermaids, Aladdin, Genies, Rose Girls, a Magic Carpet, Ali Baba, Thieves and a swarm of pretty Bees.
