Introduction
Stamps School of Art and Design is located in a three story, 70,000-square-foot building, designed by Swanson Associates in 1974. This building is situated on North Campus of University of Michigan (2000 Bonisteel Blvd.), along with the School of Music, Theatre & Dance; the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning; the College of Engineering; the Duderstadt Center, and Pierpont Commons. The facility consists of various specialty studios, classrooms, and interactive spaces for students. There is not a clear and unified wayfinding system in the building and it is difficult to navigate through out the building for the first time. This wayfinding system is proposed for anyone to easily navigate in the building, without a tour guide. There are four entrances for the building, two near the parking lot on Fuller rd. and two near the bus stops on Boniesteel Blvd. The four entrances of the building emphasize the rectangular form of the building, which is utilized through out the wayfinding system. This wayfinding system utilizes 1” grid lines with 0.25” subdivisions.

Colors
Many initial reactions for the building were depressing, dark, and gloomy, therefore lighter color of green and yellow (maize) brings in a bit of brightness into the building. These colors were carefully chosen to maximize readability, while simulating the building. Blue and red were already being used in certain parts of the building, adding two lighter colors, yellow (maize) and green, bringing liveliness to the building. Yellow (maize) is inspired by University of Michigan’s signature colors of maize and blue, while green is a complementary of red and a secondary of blue and yellow. Each color represents a category of various space in the facility, such as administration and faculty offices; studio classrooms; specialty classrooms; shared space between the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and Stamps.

Signs
Signs also contain rectangular shapes, mimicking the shape of the building. The directional signs are made with a system of grid to emphasize the rectangular shapes. The bathroom and elevator signs are made up of the first letter of the words for “Men’s”, “Women’s”, “Unisex” and “Elevator”. The choice of using the initials of the words was to accentuate the rectangular characteristic of Univers and to prevent pictorial signs from pursuing gender stereotypes for the bathrooms.
