THE FRENCH SELECTION CAMEMBERT DE NORMANDIE Camembert dates back to the 18th century. Upon presentation to none other than Napoléon, he was informed that the cheese came from a small village named Camembert. It has a soft creamy texture, formed from cow’s milk. VALENCAY Valencay cheeses were once shaped like perfect pyramids. However when Napoleon returned from his disastrous campaign in Egypt, he stopped at the castle of Valencay and seeing the cheese remained him of the Egyptian pyramids. He drew his sword and chopped off the top. Cheeses have been made in the shape of a truncated pyramids ever since. A truncated-pyramids shape with a blue-grey surface covered with wood hash. Ripened for about a month, the paste is smooth with a delicate goatee flavour. MIMOLETTE Often known as the “Boule de Lille”, this is a hard brittle cheese, deep orange in colour. Has a tangy flour with a fruity Parmesan finish. Offers great company to a glass of beer

PONT L’EVEQUE Another cheese named after a town in Normandy. A semi-soft cheese, yellow in color with a edible crust. Offers a pungent aroma, a delicious savoury flavour with just a hint of sweetness and a good robust finish. An excellent dessert cheese

MUNSTER Don’t let the smell put you off, if you like ‘em smelly, this is a great cheese. Smooth, with a flavour that is both sweet and savoury with an intense, almost spicy finish. Originates from the Alsace. Goes well with a good rye bread and a beer!

MORBIER A cheese of 2 halves! In two layers, a thin layer of almost flavourless ash separates the cheese, originally to separate the morning milk from the evening curds. It’s a creamy, springy cheese with an aroma of fresh hay, a sweet and almost fruity taste.

CANTAL The oldest of French cheeses, dating from back to the time of the gauls. The grandfather of the cheese from the Auvergne region. Has a good earthy aroma from the rich pasture land in which it originates, with a smooth buttery taste. A fine example of a county cheese CHAUMES Chaumes is a delicious soft pale cheese with a rich full bodied flavour and smooth creamy texture. Its strong aroma is generated by the cheese’s distinctive natural orange rind. Its rich rounded individual flavour has made Chaumes one of the most popular French cheese ROQUEFORD SOCIETE Considered, along with stilton, as the “king of cheeses”. Ranked as one of the finest blue cheeses. Combines the sweet burnt-caramel taste of sheep’s milk with the sharp melting tang of the blue mould. Crumbly, melt in the mouth and refreshing have all been used to describe this great cheese BRIE DE MEAUX It’s known as “king of cheeses”. It received this title on the occasion of the Viennese congress in 1814. Protected by an AOC, it only comes from Ile-de-France near Paris. Soft, creamy texture with a fruity flavour

EMMENTAL Emmental is a variety that is characterized by the large holes, that grow in size as it ages. It has a mild to strong taste that is slightly nutty to fruity in flavour REBLOCHON Originates from the Savoy mountains region. Has a supple, creamy texture with a warm yeasty aroma and a sweet flavour of freshly crushed walnuts. The name of the cheese means ”to pinch a cow’s udder again”, but don’t let that put you off! A class cheese COMTE This the most distinguished of Jura cheeses, dotted with small holes and has a characteristic hazelnut flavour. The Comte is made without any artificial ingredient, using only traditional methods

GREAT BRITISH CHEESES DORSET DRUM This aptly drum shaped delight from Dorset offers Cheddar lovers a real treat. Dipped in black wax and perfectly aged.
