MEDICAL BENEFITS Such a pleasant Sativa high is always good for stress and anxiety management. There’s some relaxation of physical tension, but far more noticeable is the headache relief. I smoked it when I had a cold and experienced an easing of congestion. Hawaiian Snow went down smooth when smoked; it’s a great flower for when you come down with a cold and don’t want the fuzziness of over the counter cold medicines.

A Sativa-dominant blend, one of the surprising parents of the Hawaiian Snow strain is Pennywise, a high-CBD Indica born from Harlequin and Jack the Ripper. Two energetic sativa strains make up the rest of its genes: Golden Pineapple and Durban Poison. The latter two strains give Hawaiian Snow its creative and uplifting effects, as well as the sweet, aromatic taste of the buds after exhaling.

The dense buds are packed with leaves, clearly well-cured and flaky to the touch. They’ve been handled with care during the trim process: every cluster of leaflets is coated with sparkling trichomes thick enough to declare a snow day. Bunches of long hairs almost cover the entire nug, giving them a wild appearance like they were plucked straight from the jungle.

The first note is earthy, showing off the CBD genes, but a deeper whiff has that hazey tang. There are hints of that definitively sharp, refreshing scent associated with such buzzy sativas. With a bit of citrusy-mint in the background, this strain has an overall fantastic scent.

Fresh and almost minty as you inhale, the subtle flavor transforms after the first hit. The delicate taste left in your mouth is floral and exotic, like the taste of warm island air filled with freshpicked leis. It will undoubtedly be an enjoyable break from the heavy, rich feasts at Christmas parties.

This notoriously happy strain is perfect for family time during the holidays, keeping you relaxed and cheerful for yuletide festivities. The cerebral high eliminates stress without hindering focus-- ideal for remaining social and comfortable. Hawaiian Snow is definitely heady, but Pennywise balances out the combination so that the high stays grounded and soothing.

Collective Awakenings Oregon’s Original

WRITTEN BY LAUREN TERRY PHOTOS PROVIDED BY ALIGRA OF COLLECTIVE AWAKENINGS

WHAT’S INSIDE

Though their familiar yellow and green sunrise has been shining for over three years on NE Sandy Blvd, Collective Awakenings recently completed a total makeover that visually embodies their open-hearted philosophy. As of the first week of September, their vibrant, new lobby welcomes visitors with a massive tree draped in living moss, spreading its branches across the ceiling. An Australian bearded dragon named Gary lives in a luxe terrarium in the waiting area, and a little beta fish inhabits the refreshment table serving Happy Cup Coffee as well. Partners in life and in business, co-owners Aligra and Alex also share the same passion to create a truly collective environment. Every bit of gleaming wood forming the counters and benches was reclaimed from fallen Northwest giants or donated from the neighborhood’s construction companies. Pieces contributed by local carpenters, mosaic and wrought iron artists adorn the room, creating a warm, expressive environment for patients to feel at ease. They believe that patients are entitled to the most accommodating atmosphere possible. “We are 100% here for the patients. The more questions and concerns you bring up, the better we can match a method and dosage that’s best for you.” Both took the layout of the shop seriously, considering any tiny revision to better serve people’s needs. In the green room, the product is shown at several identical stations, each slightly separated for added privacy. They are currently building an ADA-accessible counter so that there is a station specifically made for patients in wheelchairs or require further assistance. True to their spirit, they are their vendors’ biggest fans; they’ve taught young entrepreneurs how to professionally package and market their products and watched them bloom with pride. Preferred vendors include Elbe’s Edibles, Empower Oils and flower and concentrates from Chronic Creations, who’s Optimus Diesel ice wax won first place at Portland’s 1st annual Medical Cup. When I mentioned how many dispensaries can now be found on Sandy Boulevard, Alex called it, “The Green Mile.” They were one of four at first, but they don’t feel competitive with other spots. The challenge only encourages everyone to provide a unique variety at consistently high-quality. Collectively, just good vibes all around.

High Five’s Amaze Balls

Chocolate-Peanut Butter Truffles WRITTEN BY LAUREN TERRY PHOTO BY DANIEL ERICH

After a certain point, one can get tired of the same sugar cookies year after year; the redundant flavors of gingerbread and pumpkin. That’s where Amaze Balls come in. Like a jumbo, medicated peanut-butter cup, these grown-up goodies made by High Five Products are convenient to take to go, and packed with satisfying flavors that show highquality ingredients. High Five’s selection also includes a lemon and white chocolate truffle and a coconut-filled chocolate, but the classic combination of velvety chocolate and creamy peanut butter was too tempting to resist. The truffles are discreetly medicated; there’s no scent of cannabis. Keeping the safety of the loved ones of their patients in mind, the truffles don’t look too much like actual Reeses, avoiding any confusion of them with regular candy. Amaze Balls contain 50 mg THC, taking the gratification far beyond your taste buds. The truffles come in packs of two, though I’d recommend one at a time. Each chocolate is so hearty that it can be divided into multiple luscious morsels. I ate half of one to start with, resulting in a mild high similar to smoking a couple bowls. An hour later I finished the other half, leaving me sufficiently mellowed out and seriously high. There’s significant physical relief without feeling dazed or floored, and an enjoyable head high to boot. I’d stick to half a truffle if you’ve got a work party to look forward to, but go for the whole chocolate if you’re settling in to watch the football game. Though each bite is silky, the chocolates don’t melt if left in room temperature for a while. It’s safe to say Santa will be crossing his fingers for some Amaze Balls next to that glass of milk this Christmas Eve.

TERPENES AND YOUR HEALTH WRITTEN BY RYAN ABERNATHY OF X-TRACTED PHOTOS BY ALLIE BECKETT With more states adding medical marijuana to the law books, there is an increased focus on maximizing the medicinal effects of cannabis. The fragrance, or scent of cannabis plays an important role in its healing qualities than many give it credit for, and a unique group of molecules called terpenes are largely responsible for this. Terpenes are produced by plants in nature and are the major components of their essential oils. These terpenes are responsible for the unique smell, flavor, and in large part, the medicinal effects of different plants. Common plants have no less than twenty terpenes, which make up their terpene profile. This combination of unique molecules is what makes a pine tree smell like pine or a rose smell like a rose. “Terpene profile” is becoming a common term in the cannabis industry to describe the scent of a strain, as well as the flavor of the flower or concentrate when consumed. THC, CBD, and the other cannabinoids are frequently focused on when discussing the healing properties of cannabis. Terpenes have many medicinal effects beyond just the obvious, and are often over looked for their importance in how cannabinoids react with the human system. Cannabinoids bond with the endocannabinoid system, primarily in the brain. This causes the sensation of being “high”. Terpenes have a similar reaction. They bond to these receptors, not only enhancing or altering the effects of the cannabinoids, but imparting their own synergistic effects, allowing for many of the healing qualities associated with cannabis. Linalool, a terpene commonly found in strains such as G-13, is credited with the soothing, antianxiety qualities of the strain. Linalool is also found in high levels in the Lavender plant, which is why lavender is used in so many products marketed at being relaxing and soothing, from candles to skin care. A common misconception with many cannabis users is that there are terpenes exclusively unique to cannabis. With all plants having their own unique combination of terpene molecules, there are terpenes that exhibit medicinal qualities shared among many medicinal plants, such as Linalool and Myrcene. Myrcene is found in Skunks, Kush’s, White Widow, and many of the old school strains associated with being extremely stony, or having that couch lock effect. Myrcene is also found in mangos and hops, and

community that if you eat mangos before you get high it will enhance the experience.

Due to the synergistic relationship between the

endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids, and terpenes, this is actually true! With so much new focus from all of the medical qualities of cannabis, the industry is answering back with a myriad of new products to address these demands. Concentrates that retain the terpenes of the strains are increasingly popular, reflecting the essence and medicinal qualities of the terpenes in extremely high quantities. Medibles are being infused with natural products like lemon rind, increasing the limonene terpene levels, helping to boost its mood elevating qualities when consumed with cannabis. Vapor pens are being infused with natural terpenes, appealing to users seeking flavors other than just cannabis strains. A new, exciting development on the market are the nearly pure cannabinoid concentrates testing at 97% and higher. These are being infused with terpenes not necessarily found in cannabis, with their own unique qualities. As cannabis is studied further, and these relationships are better understood, more exciting developments will come, so next time you are in your garden enjoying a joint, or at your local access point, let your nose do the deciding! There is a whole new world emerging! Thanks to X-Tracted Laboratories and Dr. Kymron deCesare, Chief Research Officer, Steephill Labs.

Joshua Hibbard Talks Pot, Art, and the Infamous Elimination Interview by Lauren Terry

O

riginally a contestant from season three of the Spike reality show, “Ink Master,” Joshua Hibbard made a memorable impression as a front-runner on “Ink Master: Rivals” this past fall. During the November 11th episode, he was sent home after admitting to smoking marijuana in order to deal with his anxiety. His talent made him stand out from the start, and his elimination inspired a massive response on Twitter. Thousands of fans created a movement to overturn the decision, using the “KeepJosh” hashtag. He released a personal statement on his website that reads, “Even though I was eliminated for a breach in my contract and rule violations, at no time during any part of the competition did I do something to undermine the competition or give myself an unfair edge.” For the first time since his departure from “Ink Master: Rivals,” Hibbard granted an exclusive interview with DOPE Magazine’s Lauren Terry, shown here. DOPE: With the cell-phone/internet restrictions for reality show contestants, were you able to vote? Were you aware of the election results as ballots were counted? Josh: Yes, I was back home already by the time the election was held, so I found out at the same time as others did. DOPE: For those of us native Oregonians, it’s still hard to believe that timber-lovin’, bible-thumpin’ Oregon passed Measure 91. How did you feel about your home state when you heard the news? Josh: I was stoked, I thought to myself, “Finally!” Finally the people have been heard, finally! People can get some pain relief or mental relief without having to pay expensive doctor visits, astronomical prescription prices, or live in fear of the police arresting them. Finally! A positive for all of the people in Oregon. DOPE: Kudos for keeping it cool in your public statement after being eliminated for breach of contract. Were you surprised they were so strict with enforcing the “lifestyle” required for the competition? Josh: Thanks, I tried to keep everything professional in that situation. I never imagined that I would get removed from the show, I understood from their point of view that a contract was a contract, but the thing that bothered me the most was being labeled a cheater. I broke a personal conduct rule, not a competitive rule. DOPE: What was the reaction from your fellow competitors when you were asked to leave the show? Josh: Relief for a few of them, shock for others. The best tattooist of the day went home, and never in the history of the show had that ever happened. The judges had no say, they didn’t care, and they were in shock as well. I know whoever wins can never say they beat me in competition. It was my title and I feel like it is not going to go to the best artist. DOPE: You’re a sort of new-world success story for marijuana-smokers and artists of any kind. Any advice for other creatives who keep their smoking habits “in the closet?” Josh: I understand. People have the right to disclose what they want about their private lives, I had to hide it, now I don’t. It is strange that people who hated me on the show the first time I was on in Season 3, actually love me now after what happened in Season 5. They can relate to me, we share something in common, for those who are not out with their recreation endeavors should not have to feel like they are doing something wrong. DOPE: Hundreds of fans claim you were the most talented artist on the show. What characteristics do you think made you someone that

people really resonated with? Josh: Because I was focused on what I was there for, to win the title of Ink Master. I actually do great tattoos, I listen to people and give them what they want, but I make sure that it looks good on the person. DOPE: Are you branching out into different styles and materials after the exposure to other tattoo artists? Josh: I am always pushing the boundaries of my artwork, seeing the work of others can motivate you. I think that if you stand still in this industry you will not survive. I really like neo-traditional and illustrative styles, I am getting more and more influenced by Tibetan Art. DOPE: Have any galleries contacted you in regards to your paintings? (“Wicked Jellyfish” is my favorite!) Josh: I have had a couple contact me. I am very honored that someone would be interested in my art. I have been very private with it in the past, so I am excited to get a chance to show people where I am coming from when I get to choose what I want to do, it’s a massive rush. DOPE: As a creative individual, do you find that people are less likely to believe that you consume it for anxiety relief? Josh: I don’t really care what people believe. I think that as a creative person with anxiety, I have a pretty hard time creating if I am not able to relax and focus on my own. Medicating for anxiety is a huge benefit for my creative ventures. DOPE: In Oregon, anxiety is no longer eligible for a medicinal marijuana prescription. How do you feel about the requirement for the ailments to be physical? Josh: So, let me say that not all pain is visible. Yeah you can see someone who has a bum knee hobble down the road, but you can also pass someone who looks perfectly healthy and the pain is so unbearable they would rather die. So I think that if you are experiencing any type of ailment, you should be given every opportunity to get the help you need. DOPE: I dig your personal mantra/inspiration for the clothing line, “INSTIGATE.” What sort of conversations are you trying to instigate through your art and marijuana advocacy? What do you believe needs to be confronted or talked about? Josh: I am wanting to get people to show that the world needs “Instigators” to cause change. Not just in their life, but in the world they live in.

THE VOTERS ARE SMOKIN’ WHAT STATE LEVEL LEGALIZATION MEANS FOR EVERYONE Written By Lauren Terry At this point, the excitement of marijuana being legalized for recreational use in Oregon, Alaska, and Washington, D.C. has subsided to a dull roar. Enough people have read the fine print and bummed out their friends with the disappointing news that no shops will be open for business until mid 2015 at the earliest. Those of us who prepared for celebrations with seven-gram joints ended up smoking them in our respective residences with a towel pushed against the crack of the door, per usual. 32

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

MARIJUANA NEWS Medicinal patients continue to visit their favorite dispensaries for product. Though we continue to see interpretations of the election results from the world’s political publications, Kim Kardashian posed nude a few days later and the internet is full of new distracting stories to share. Following the heavy debating over measures passing or not, we now find ourselves stuck at the less-thrilling stage of defining the details. The exhilarating emotions brought on by the final ballot count have been funneled into further reflection on what cannabis legalization really means for our states and for our country. Aside from the obvious issue of marijuana remaining illegal in the eyes of the federal government, each state that has legalization at hand faces its own unique challenges in the future. The specific rules applicable to Washington, D.C. complicate progress towards finalizing legalization, although the votes were well over 60% in favor. Now congress may very well involve themselves to the point of overruling the decision. For Alaskans who had the closest margin while passing the measure, plenty of controversy lies on the horizon. With alcoholism being a major problem in that region, further research on the medical capacities of cannabis will allow additional supporting evidence and lead to better understanding overall. In a remote state spread across wide expanses, Alaska’s transportation challenge will be the first issue to sort out. Although people can possess small amounts under state law, federal law still controls the skies and most waterways, and there are numerous rural communities accessible only by plane or boat. One matter that affects every state and has yet to be addressed is drug testing in the workplace. Most agree that alcohol and marijuana should be treated the same, and that smoking a joint over the weekend shouldn’t be something to get fired over come Monday. The difference is that an individual considered an “alcoholic” is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Employers can prohibit being drunk at work, but they are not allowed to discriminate against an employee based on any drinking they do on their own time. The use of marijuana itself is not protected at all when it comes to most company’s internal rules, and employers can react as they wish regardless of changing state laws. The election showed a higher turnout of

It is ridiculous to keep pretending that cannabis, with its proven medical benefits, is more dangerous than meth.” young voters, who have a particular perspective of this historical moment. It’s not as big of a surprise to most millennials that weed is being legalized across the United States. They have grown up with medicinal marijuana being a normal function in several states, they have heard the legends of Amsterdam, and went to 420 celebrations in college. In contrast, their parents grew up amidst “Reefer Madness” propaganda, when the government threw out radical exaggerations of the effects of cannabis use. Sure, current high school textbooks treat marijuana as a Schedule I drug and skirt around the medical benefits, but it’s miles ahead of what was being taught forty years ago. For most in older generations, imagine what it would’ve felt like if marijuana was legalized in their 20s means to re-imagine the course of government over the past 50 years. When I asked my dad what he would’ve thought if he knew weed would begin to be legalized in the 2010s, he replied, “Surreal. The legalization of marijuana would have been tantamount to the government acknowledging that there were beneficial aspects to communism. In the same way that we knew Vietnam was not a domino on the way to communist takeover of San Francisco and Los Angeles, we knew that marijuana would not turn us into heroin addicts. It would’ve meant a forfeit of the federal government’s credibility.” Even with conspiracy theories readily available on YouTube, and citizen’s distrust of their cell phone providers, the most il-

logical of outdated values are still being upheld. However, we are now seeing the cracks in the marble statue of our nation’s past leaders, as one by one they begin to acknowledge they have been overstating the dangers of cannabis use. Several other states are moving in the same direction, either by implementing medicinal marijuana for the first time, or by taking it one step further and proceeding towards legalization for recreational use. This breakdown between state and nation unfortunately demonstrates weakness, and undermines the good example we could be setting for the rest of the world’s countries. Some have already spoken out against the hypocrisy and drawn attention to the contradictory laws in motion. Christopher Ingraham investigated one of these opinions in a piece for the Washington Post covering a statement made by the director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov. Fedotov sees the state-level legalization initiatives as violations of well-established international drug treaties. Keith Humphreys, a Stanford University professor who studies drug policy, reviewed Fedotov’s remarks and added, “After Obama leaves office in early 2017, the new administration will have to decide if it wants to keep stretching the meaning of the treaties or formalize a different approach to marijuana. The politics around marijuana in the USA are favorable for this among voters, but not in the senate which would vote on any revised treaty.” What will future generations think of their government if federal law continues to ignore the voices and actions of its states? They must acknowledge the trend and start reevaluating their stance on marijuana, since their current position remains at odds with the beliefs of most of the population. The first step is addressing the cold, hard truth of marijuana’s lethal magnitude, which is zero, then the plant must be rescheduled to a more appropriate classification. It is ridiculous to keep pretending that cannabis, with its proven medical benefits, is more dangerous than meth -- a destructive, deadly poisonous drug with no positive effects. Thousands of Americans are now proving that they truly believe in something, and are willing to pay the taxes and adapt to the new economy it would create. Here’s to hoping the federal government can keep up.

BUBBLER WITH A STONE Their top-notch bubbler comes in at over $300 but it’s worth it. With scientifically blown glass and a female ‘claim catcher’ for all the resins and tar, this piece goes above and beyond for those looking to oil up their day.

WRITTEN BY R.Z. HUGHES PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALLIE BECKETT I’ll be honest here: The first time I attempted to use the Healthstone, I failed miserably. Since I was used to the traditional method of heating up a titanium or glass nail, or a plate, I found myself heating the stone for over half a minute with no success. A couple of YouTube videos later and my folly became clear. With most oil pieces one ‘dabs’ the oil onto a heated element, but with the Healthstone one places the oil on top of the porous rock and then

torches it while inhaling. Once I got it down, the Healthstone worked like a charm. It is essentially a piece of pumice, or volcanic rock, that is blown into a bowl piece or the bowl of a pipe. With the stone properly christened with some Sugar Cookies wax I took a hit and was blown away. Unlike nails, where it is unavoidable to lose some precious vapor, the oil melts into the cracks and crevices of the stone and none is

wasted. Due to this, one can usually get two good tokes for every dab loaded; just fire it up again and the remaining oil is purged from the porous stone. Aside from my initial confusion, I would highly recommend this to any extract aficionado, or anyone who has been burned from a dabbaratus that stayed hot long after its use.

Marijuana is awesome. For all intensive purposes it is a magical wonder-drug that treats almost anything you can think of. If you are reading this, you probably already know it to be true. It is in my belief that the other people who make up this thing we call society are beginning to come to the same conclusion. Whether it be a cosmic shift in perception, or the result of pioneering research and activism; the chauvinistic portrayal of ‘stoner’ has begun to burn out. For years marijuana users have been surrounded by stigma that forced us to pretend that our sodium vapor lights were for hydroponic tomatoes, or that we were really going to use a bong for only tobacco. Our competence was constantly downplayed by the media, thus lending a flawed and incorrect image of a marijuana user to members of society. Lack of proper education surrounding marijuana, tends to warp the portrayal of the user into a disillusioned facade of social pathology. In other words, the Man is trying to keep us down, man, and it makes other people like, not get us, man. The severity of this disillusioned portrayal of marijuana users is dependent on time, space and culture. Here in Eugene Oregon the stigma of a marijuana user has been fading away for some time. I went around to some local Eugene dispensaries to see all the different assortments of people inside. I found a man in a suit, with short hair even! I found a wife getting medicine for her husband, too sick to leave home. I also found Lisa, a 63 year old OMMP member from Eugene. I asked her if

she thought living here offered any comfort as a marijuana user. She had this to say, “People around here realize what pot really is. It’s just medicine, it always has been. I have four grandchildren, I was a district attorney for twelve years, I’m not a criminal”! Those Reefer Madness days are at an end. As the legality of marijuana becomes more and more fluid the appearance of the user does the same It’s becoming harder and harder to point out someone who looks like they smoke weed; like trying to point out someone who drinks beer.

We are albatross. In a world of flightless birds, we are not meant to land. We aren’t getting high, we’re just getting bye.

Our children, and our children’s children, will grow up with marijuana just being another thing, just something people do. It could end up being just another vodka commercial, with a guy who looks like James Bond smoking a doobie swoons some ridiculously named woman and then tells you to toke responsibly. Or it could turn into something else. Something good. We, that means you, me and your homies,

have been given the opportunity to help future generations see marijuana in a better light than we ever did; beings we have seen marijuana in a time of stigma and misguided prejudice, we have the motivation and the ideals to do this. The baby boomers will soon die and before we know it we are the ones making impressions in the world, and in the lives of generations to follow us. The possibility of some quasiutopia of cannabis culture is right in front of us. The way in which we choose to conduct ourselves and educate our children on the uses and intensions of marijuana will have the greatest impact on this possibility. Certain places on the planet attract certain kinds of people for certain reasons. It is in my belief that places like Eugene Oregon, with high concentrations of atypical and open minded people, are the origin of a chain reaction of divergence in societal norms. This is a very cool place to be. You could even say it’s radical, man. As the Pacific Northwest continues to replace its’ coffee shops with “coffee shops” the rest of the nation, and world for that matter, will begin to observe no degradation to our quality of life. Seeing that there is no immediate damage to their precious “system” they will likely begin to accept marijuana as we have for years. We don’t need a full blown renaissance, or protests in Berkley. Marijuana legalization is just a step in the right direction. This is no longer a counter culture development.

GROW

Cultivating Knowledge Oregon’s Industrial Hemp Challenge Written By Lindsey Rinehart Many people don’t realize that with the passing of Measure 91, the growing of industrial hemp is also now allowed in the State of Oregon. Whenever this subject comes up, confusion seems to be the prevalent feeling, so we sat down with Oregon Attorney, Courtney N. Moran LLM, of Earth Law, LLC who advocates for industrial hemp, to get some of the confusion turned to confidence regarding the new law. Courtney interned for Keith Stroup at NORML, and recently completed the world’s first industrial hemp university course offered at OSU, in 2013. Courtney earned a Master of Laws in Environmental and Natural Resources Law, with an emphasis in Industrial Hemp Law from Lewis and Clark University. DOPE: Now that Measure 91 has passed, there was a little-discussed industrial hemp provision included. Can you please tell us who will get to grow hemp, and when? Courtney: “The Oregon Legislature enacted SB 676, which was signed into law by Governor Kulongoski on August 4, 2009 authorizing “industrial hemp production and possession, and commerce in industrial hemp commodities and products.” SB 676 was codified at ORS §§ 571.300-315, and became operative January 1, 2010. SB 676 did not require federal law to become operative. The pertinent section of Measure 91 regarding industrial hemp is Section 80. Section 80 adds to ORS § 571.315, a clause prohibiting the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) from revoking or refusing to issue or renew an industrial hemp license or production permit on the basis of the

federal law prohibition on production, possession, or commerce in industrial hemp. Fortunately, ODA has not used the federal prohibition as a reason for not issuing licenses. ODA has not issued licenses because they do not have rules in place. ORS § 571.305 authorizes ODA to develop rules and regulations to implement the industrial hemp program in Oregon. ODA is underway with the rule making process. The ODA developed an Industrial Hemp Rules Advisory Committee (IHRAC) in November 2013. The IHRAC has met three times, with the last meeting on September 30, 2014. ODA plans to have rules out for public comment within the next month. Once rules are finalized, ODA will have the authority to issue industrial hemp licenses. The goal is to have rules finalized in time for ODA to issue licenses in the spring of 2015 for the 2015 production season. Currently, Oregon law requires a three year license, as well as a minimum of 2.5 acres of cultivation. Anyone can apply for an industrial hemp grower or handler license or an agricultural hemp seed production permit.” DOPE: Do you think the implementation of hemp will effect medical cannabis and recreational cannabis? Courtney: “No, the only possible concern could be with cross-pollination. Cannabis sativa L. is a wind-pollinated plant. Therefore, there is a potential risk with current outdoor medical or future outdoor recreational marijuana grows being cross-pollinated with industrial hemp. Cross-pollination could result in overall marijuana crop THC concentrations lowered and male industrial hemp plants pollinating female marijuana plants, which are typically starved from fertilization. A hemp farmer would have the reciprocal concern of having their industrial hemp crop THC con-

centration increased beyond the legal limit of 0.3 percent. However, many outdoor medical marijuana grows are concentrated in one area of the state, and therefore licensees can plan accordingly and plant hemp in other areas of the state which may be more suitable for hemp cultivation. Since hemp grows well as a rotational crop, it is likely hemp cultivators will be those with established farms. One positive effect will likely be that anyone who is on the fence or has negative opinions about C. sativa may change their mind once they learn the facts about industrial hemp. Industrial hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly crops because hemp requires few fertilizers, does not require the use of pesticides or herbicides, and can rebuild and condition soils. Not to mention that manufacturers can produce industrial hemp into more than 25,000 products. Industrial hemp is truly the greatest renewable resource available to mankind.” DOPE: For those who may be unfamiliar, what kinds of things could be produced from hemp grown in Oregon, and where would they go? Courtney: “Cultivators can grow industrial hemp as a seed, fiber, or dual-purpose crop. Interest has been expressed to use the first Oregon crop yields of hemp seed for food and for pressing hemp seed into oil for food and cosmetic products, and yields of hemp stalk for construction materials, namely hempcrete and fiberboard. Processing facilities for hemp seed and processing facilities for hemp stalk/hemp fiber need to be built in Oregon or existing facilities may need to be modified. Sterile hemp seed and industrial hemp products are legal and can be sold in the U.S. and in countries around the world. “

This BHO left me relaxed and happy with its strong euphoric tendencies, although very medicated from the 92.88% THC level present! I noticed myself smiling more almost immediately and giggling over little things. I did these dabs at the end of a long day, and had almost instant pain relief from the Indica’s dominating presence. Due to the extremely powerful THC content and the researched Indicadominant genetics, I had expected more couchlock and drowsiness, but that was far from the situation. Instead, I wound up with a serious pain reduction, more energy, and some extra creativity that I would’ve expected from a more sativalike strain.

The flavor is very faint in this concentrate, but at the same time, it has a complex flavor profile on the exhalation. First, you notice an unanticipated sour taste similar to a Diesel strain, but sweetness is then quick to make itself known, followed almost immediately by an earthy taste that lingers in your mouth, leaving you wanting more.

The strain Alien OG is typically used to treat Anxiety, ADD/ADHD, Migraines, PTSD, and PMS. It has a strong stress relieving effect that most would find relaxing. In BHO form, the stress relief was even more superb. Alien OG would also be great at treating depression and pain, mostly from its Tahoe OG background. The strain has also been known to provide some relief of muscle spasms as well.

This strain comes out a very vibrant yellowgold! The one gram covers the entire container with chunks of golden goodness, and anyone trying to pick out one container over the other would be hard pressed to pick just one, as they all look great!

MAD does a wonderful job at leaving the terpenes present, so there is a pungent smell when you put your nose to the container. The Alien OG smells mildly sweet, mostly earthy, with a hint of citrus and sour present that tickles the inside of your nose.

Alien OG is a very strong strain comprised of Alien Kush and Tahoe OG, both Indica dominant strains. Alien Kush is a hybrid of Las Vegas Purple Kush and Alien Dawg, and Tahoe OG is a long standing, well respected Indica, that comes with a kick!

LAB NOTES 46

KIEF QUANDARY Written By That’s right, quandary. It’s not a word you see every day. For our second installment of Lab Notes, we’d like to highlight a particular case that caused serious dread-scratching at our lab. We came across some very curious results in a recent test with a client that grows boutique quality cannabis. The kief sample that originated from a high quality flower tested at a lower potency than the flower itself. How is that possible? It certainly did not seem possible given our assumptions about kief and its physical composition. We retested both the kief and the flower, and the results were essentially identical, with the kief testing slightly lower than its mother flower. How can cannabis science explain this? For any flower specimen in general, potency will vary greatly within a single plant. The flower that was tested in this instance was not only a finely grown high-quality hybrid, but also choicely-selected. Even testing a nice nug, it still seemed odd that the kief tested lower than its flower, but kief is a broad term and not as strictly distinguishable as a ‘bud’ or a ‘stem,’ or as a clearly defined natural specimen. Kief and how it is collected can greatly alter its physical components. Kief is not necessarily pure trichrome content, as many may assume, but a mixture of various components, from trichrome portions to plant material. One cannot determine reliably how much of the kief contains true trichromes just from a visual observation with the naked eye. How is it that the Crystal Cascade flower tested at over 23% THC, yet the kief that came from the same flower tested lower? (Figure 1) In confirming our data, we tested both the kief and flower with larger and more representative sample pools. We then looked at the kief under a microscope. It appeared to be on the green side and had a finer grain than other kief we have seen. This coloration most likely originated from the collection process, and more vegetative matter must have been collected along with the trichomes. As a result, the trichomes were diluted. While it is important to consider the collection method, we also know that it is important to review the chemistry of trichomes, and how they vary in cannabinoid content across the plant. Not only can the collection method of kief affect its overall strength, but the trichome development and composition contributes to potency as well. In another case, a beautiful and extremely crystalline flower, rather appropriately named ‘Ice’ was tested. (Figure 2) Ice ended up testing at 13.9% total THC. We looked at the trichomes under magnification to look closer at Ice’s little icicles. There are two broad categories of trichomes: glandular (cannabinoid producing) and nonglandular (non -cannabinoid producing). While Ice was extremely crystalline looking with the naked eye, we noted that the trichomes were either immature glandular or nonglandular, both of which are not cannabinoid producing. (Figure 3) In sum, there are two important components to remember that can affect the strength of your kief: how it is collected, and the development of the trichomes on the mother flower.

25 Grams in NYC No Longer Reason for Arrest

Seth Rogen’s Plan to Light Up the White House

New York City Police Commissioner, Bill Bratton, announced that on November 19th having twenty-five grams of marijuana on your person is no longer an arrestable offense. Up until now, tens of thousands of New Yorkers have been arrested yearly for low-level cannabis possession. The offender now will just be given a $100 ticket and asked

When Washington DC legalized recreational pot last month, comedian Seth Rogen took to Twitter to make a bold claim. “I gonna smoke weed in the White House y’all.” It seems like this would get him uninvited to future presidential events –

to appear in court. This will free up resources and manpower for the police to go after more serious crimes and offenses while clearing up the court system as well. Smoking is still cause for immediate arrest however, so don’t get too cocky about lighting up around the city.

or at least an extra pat down upon arrival. However, Snoop Dogg tweeted that he had already been there and done that, and legend has it Willie Nelson smoked on the roof during Jimmy Carter’s time in office.

Guam Enacts Medical Marijuana Law

The United Nations Concerned with Trends in Legalization The UN organization on illegal drug activity, the International Narcotics Control Board, has issued a warning to the United States that it is breaking international law with medical and legalized cannabis. INCB president Raymond Yans claims that the legalization in Washington and Colorado, along with the recent victories in DC, Alaska, and Oregon, are all in violation of international treaties and that there is a “grave public health concern” due to the “unprecedented surge...of legal highs.” As laws change in favor of legalization and anti-cannabis myths are dispelled, this comes off as a grossly uninformed overstatement.

As the national tide turns towards the decriminalization of weed, the United States Pacific island territory Guam has decided to join the party and pass a law making it legal for doctors to prescribe cannabis. Guam has long been a US military stronghold with a very conservative population so the passing of this bill shows bipartisan support of smart cannabis policy spreading though out the nation and its vast territories.

Marijuana Detection Device Coming in 2015 for Hotels and Apartments Weary travelers and apartment tenants get ready for the AirGuard. Developed by Dartmouth scientists, the AirGuard is similar to a smoke detector however it detects nicotine or cannabis compounds in the air. Also, instead of a high-pitched ringing, it sends a silent signal to the owner, alerting them that you are smoking in your room. Designed after hearing complaints from hotels that guests had left their rooms smelling like a Cypress Hill concert, there is worry that it will detect compounds left on clothing from someone who recently took a hit. As one of the last truly free bastions of modern society, we are left to ask ourselves, “If one can’t smoke a joint in the hotel bathroom, then what’s the point?”

Chile Plants First Medical Garden 850 marijuana plants have been planted in a district of Santiago, the capitol city of Chile, as part of a new law to help cancer patients receive the medication they need for less money than imported drugs. The plants will be processed into oil and then distributed to 200 patients for a study into the pain relieving effects of cannabis for

terminal cancer patients. While there still needs to be broader access to the medicine, it is the first government project of its kind and hopefully will lead to better policy and improved availability to the patients suffering in Chile.

MENDO MEDS

Back to the land, back to the plants WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARON LETTS

In the 1960s Northern California was a destination for the hippies known as “back to the landers” that left San Francisco after the “Summer of Love,” setting up camp in the hills of the Emerald Triangle, ultimately creating the Cannabis industry we have today, and hybridizing the herb for recreation in the process. Mendocino medicine maker, Cecelia Cutler, is part of that hippie history. She left New York City during the summer of 1967 for San Francisco and finally parts north. “My life took an interesting direction because of the advice of Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass),” Cutler shared. “I literally ‘turned on, tuned in and dropped out.” Cutler said after the summer of 1967 she shed school, marriage, children, and a career and came to California to begin “a new life of freedom and study.” “We were all about ending all wars – especially Vietnam’s tragedies – and we were all about the discovery of new ways ‘to be,’” she surmised. “We were living communally, sharing, exploring – and using psychedelics.” HEALING TRAVELS Herbs, massage, yoga, and tai chi became part of Cutler’s experience,

56

compounding healing massage oils and salves early on. “In 1972 I left the country for one year, traveled, and studied yoga in Bombay for four months,” she explained. “I came back to California to teach and make medicine for the next 30 years. During that time I was also gardening – growing our magic Cannabis plant.” Cutler makes many medicinal and healing tonics, tinctures, and edibles from this magical plant, but her standout is her “Mendocino Hemp Salve,” a smooth, green salve infused with Cannabis, arnica, calendula, roses, lavender, St. John’s Wort, and oregano, with an olive oil and beeswax base. “People tell me my salve is healing for certain types of dermatitis, relieves arthritis, heals cuts and abrasions, is soothing to muscles and joints – and it’s good for burns,” she shared. “Just a small amount is needed for pain relief – and it naturally contains many vitamins.” Oculists in town say her tinctures relieve the pressure of glaucoma, but her almond cookies and salad oils are just plain good to eat, as well as being good for you. And Mendo-ites who don’t have the cash for good medicine are in luck, as Cutler and other Mendo med makers have an oath to help. “My hippie friends all agree that it is our duty to share,” she advised. “We give medicine to cancer patients, and many others, often.”

HEALTH

NOT JUST POT With a population of fourty thousand Fort Bragg is the largest city on the Mendocino Coast, and a huge tourist stop for many, with its rows of hotels and Bed & Breakfasts lining the picturesque rocky cliffs to the sea. The Dragonfly Wellness Center is located on Highway 1, which runs through town. Not just a collective, it’s a true place of wellness, offering tai chi, yoga, acupuncture, meditation classes, and a plethora of herbal remedies, including high CBD tinctures, oils and salves – with or without Cannabis in the mix, they are free of the psychoactive properties that challenge many. Locally harvested seaweed, herbs and other medicinal plants are used in the products offered up at Dragonfly. Owner Jude Thilman believes in the power of Cannabis, but as many patients are realizing, he also understands the healing powers of all medicinal plants. “We like to humorously point out that we are not ‘alternative medicine,’ Thilman states in the collective’s website. “Herbal medicine has been around for thousands of years. We are ‘traditional’ medicine. The pharmaceutical industry is the alternative – it’s only been around for less than a century.” The philosophy at Dragonfly mirrors the region’s history of health and healing, and Thilman believes there is no “one size fits all” where medicine is concerned.

ALTERNATIVELY WELL “If one therapy doesn’t work, we try another,” Thilman explained. “Having trouble with mobility? Is your energy low? Have you tried acupuncture, Bowen therapy, yoga, stretching or tai chi class? If you are anxious or stressed out, try meditation – it’s not what you think.” Changing the way people think about the plant is one thing, but helping patients find more ways to feel good is ground breaking in the Cannabis movement. What do hippies, conservatives, and everyone in between have in common? We are all biological beings on an organic planet, just trying to feel better – dodging the bullets of the industrial (so called) revolution. Maybe the plant can bring us all together for the greater good, after all. When in Mendo, anything feels possible. Cecelia Cutler’s products can be found in Mendocino collectives, including Love In It Co-op, located at 10464 Lansing St., Mendocino, CA 95460. Consistency is Key How One Company Hopes to Change the Way We Choose Our Pot WRITTEN BY R.Z. HUGHES

60

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

MARIJUANA NEWS

H

ave you ever had a strain that completely blew you away? One that was deliciously mindbending and exactly suited to your needs? Have you ever walked into your favorite shop to discover your prize nugs were all gone, along with the bad news that they wouldn’t be carrying it any longer? Even worse, the grower had lost the genetics and now the strain is gone forever? If so, you are not alone, and Davis Lawyer, CEO of Aquarius Cannabis, is looking to fix your problem. “Consistency in flowers is key,” Lawyer tells me emphatically over the phone. As an active entrepreneur in the California medical scene since 2009, he has seen the problems with inconsistencies in products, production, processing, and labeling first hand — everything one would expect in a nascent industry. One can walk into ten different collectives, all selling Dutch Treat, and each one will be different from the others. Whether they differ in THC content, aroma, genetic makeup, or bud structure, it is nearly unheard of that two growers will produce the same exact finished product. Aquarius hopes that through standardizing the production, processing, and distribution, the inconsistencies will be eliminated and this could help streamline the market. In the modern marketplace, brand recognition and consumer trust are two of the most important factors in a successful product. As a branding company, Aquarius realizes the importance of cultivating the trust in their product. Consistent production allows that to be possible. People will still want their boutique, specialty strains, but even those need to be consistent and produced uniformly. Just as Anheuser-Busch offers cost-effective Bud Lite, they are also the purveyors of craft brews such as Redhook and Full Sail. It’s a brand that people trust and associate with consistency, whether its from the bottom or the top shelf. As we talked about the lack of regulation and consistency in the emerging cannabis industry, it became clear Lawyer is thinking big. “There is no similar marketplace that operates with this lack of consistency,” he tells me. He then goes on to compare what is going on in the world of weed with Coca-Cola’s standards, “They are doing it on a worldwide-scale and getting it exactly the same every time.” The same is true with any large liquor or tobacco manufacturer. Customers don’t walk in and ask to smell a jar of Smirnoff, or eye a cigarette under a magnifying glass; you know what you are going to get as soon as you see the label. Living in Seattle where the organic movement is

ubiquitous and people seek out farmers markets to get the freshest produce, it is hard to imagine a time where people won’t want to inspect the cannabis they are buying. As with any crop that has different cultivars, strains, and genetic variation, there will always be differences. Just as two apples from the same tree may have slightly different sizes, shapes, and colors, two buds from the same plant, one from the top, flooded with light, and one from the bottom, amidst the shade of the leaves, will look different and have different levels of cannabinoids. Lawyer acknowledges this, and reiterates that streamlining and standardization does not mean less potent or less specialized pot. He likens cannabis to the wine industry and the difference that might be found in a wine from a specific vineyard from one year to the next. Of course there will be slight variation, but nothing compared to the enormous inconsistencies we’re dealing with now. They are only working with growers that they have certified and licensed to grow Aquarius genetics, which they are able to propagate throughout states legally using tissue cultures rather than clones or seeds. Being a branding company rather than a producer, Davis tells me they are looking to partner up with farmers who are producing a high quality product already, and then helping them to bring out the unique qualities and standardizing the production methods so that quality can be maintained all year round. Once this is done, Aquarius will handle the branding, marketing, and distribution of the product allowing for the producer to have more time to tend to their crop and less wasted time trying to market their product. Whether cannabis goes the route of the liquor store, craft brewing, tobacco industry, or finds a new type of niche in the marketplace, it is clear that it is a viable commercial enterprise and Aquarius Cannabis is going to be there when the standards are set.

Mendocino, California Love In It Co-op

WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARON LETTS

The Emerald Triangle is a copasetic grouping of three counties, Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity, making up the greater ganja growing capitols of the world in Northern California, with Mendocino at the bottom of the region, hugging the coast along scenic Highway 1. The North Coast ports were once filled with the industries of fishing and logging, but today it’s pretty much all about tourism, the herb, and the new migrant worker passing through for trim jobs. Mendocino proper was reinvented as an artist community in the 1950s. It’s an unincorporated city sitting squarely on one of the large bluffs known to the area, with dramatic views from sweeping cliffs encircling the little town of just under nine hundred residents. There is no good way to get to Mendo. The rugged region is not easily scaled to the coast, making it more covert than the rest of the Emerald Triangle. Highway 1 actually ends in Mendocino with miles of

64

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

switchbacks at a slow crawl. From the South it’s accessed via an equally winding Highway 1, or via Willits from Highway 101, to Highway 20 with more switchbacks and a 10 to 15 miles per hour crawl. Travel time and the stress of the drive aside, Mendo is an emerald jewel in the triangle of green, with its people coming out of the smoky closet of prohibition feet first, and its medicine makers more than willing to help those in need, with retail outlets attempting to do legit businesses in a sea of red tape and misunderstanding. CAN WE TALK? Back in 2012 this writer inquired to profile Mendocino Cannabis entities, to no avail, with city officials advising Proposition 215 businesses to keep quiet for their own good. The gag order failed just two years later with multi-agency raids comprised of city, county and federal entities

ROAD TRIP continuing to persecute patients and those who would help them. One dispensary recently raided was the “Love In It Co-op,” a legal retail establishment located in the village of Mendocino proper. Also raided was the home of its owner, Sherry Glaser, where her daughter was home from college and her brother was visiting – in full Jewish regalia, wearing a Yarmulke no less. “It’s been nine months since the raid and we have not formally been charged,” Glaser said. “We had no cash on hand to speak of, but they drained our bank accounts – they took the last of the inheritance from my mother. They took our computers and phones. They seized all the medicine from the dispensary and our farms – which was our sun grown inventory for the year.” You’d have to be a patient to feel the weight of that last sentence. Taking someone’s sun grown medicine is harsh. It takes months of hard work to grow good medicine in a short season. Knowing that medicine that was destroyed was desperately needed by real patients is heartbreaking, to say the least. FORKING IT OVER TO THE FEDS Civil Asset Forfeiture is big business for the agencies raiding entities. As detailed in an article published in the New York Times (Nov. 9, 2014), the value of assets seized increased to $4.3 billion in 2012 from $407 million in 2001. You can forget about the stigma of the cocaine pushing gangsta with a tricked out BMW to lose, as most assets taken merely on suspected charges come from families caught in the crossfire, with cars and homes taken, savings accounts drained, and the mark of a felon on everyone’s forehead. This is the truth of the failed War on Drugs – it has created a country of felons who have lost everything. Though many of the details or red flags that may have prompted the raid on the collective cannot be discussed, one infraction includes helping a six year old boy with cancer – and in my mind, the rest really doesn’t matter, but that’s just me. When a place of safe access is shut down, albeit temporarily, it’s a crime of another kind altogether – a crime of humanity. IN LOVE WITH IT The Love In It cooperative opened on February 14, 2011 – the same day, Sherry said, Hosni Mubarak was thrown out of power and Egypt declared independence. “I had the front page of the paper framed and it hangs in the club as a symbol of freedom that we shared,” Glaser said. “We opened because we wanted to come into the light and take care of patients instead of hiding in the shadows. We were proud of our medicine and felt we had a right and a duty to serve openly.” Glaser said they were also passionate about representing the Emerald Triangle in a town that truly depends on the cannabis economy. “We’ve served over 3,000 patients with chronic pain, prostate cancer, breast cancer, brain tumors, arthritis, Lyme’s disease, BiPolar, depression, migraines – the list goes on,” Glaser said. “I am a huge fan of plants as medicine. Some of my strongest allies are Cayenne, Aloe Vera, and Cannabis. And while we understand the benefits of Cayenne and Aloe, we are just discovering the miraculous nature of Cannabis in terms of relief – especially for pain.” Reports of drinking Aloe Vera juice putting diabetes and cancer into remission are just beginning to surface on the web, and Glaser said many who have given up on traditional treatments, or can no longer be helped by the Western medical community often turn to

plant-based treatments with good results. “The biggest obstacle in helping patients is basically the cluster fuck of bad laws inhibiting us from doing our job,” Glaser informed. “We can grow 25 plants, but we can only have two pounds of plant material on hand. That’s just one example that doesn’t make sense, and there are so many more.” The denial by the Federal Government that Cannabis is medicine at all, Glaser said, is a huge absurdity that’s thankfully becoming more transparent every day. BUDS NOT BOMBS Activism is no stranger to Glaser. In 2005 she created “Breasts not Bombs” with other female activists, converging in front of the White House in Washington D.C., baring all for peace and creating a forum on the “vulnerability of humanity and the earth.” “Just recently near Sacramento a judge heard testimony from doctors on the medicinal value of the plant,” Glaser said. “That decision will come out soon, but my hope is that President Obama will stand up and reschedule. I’m also hoping the new Attorney General will have a positive impact.” On a lighter note, when the going gets tough, Glaser puts on her acting chops and takes to the stage, performing at Cannabis Cups and festivals as Mother Nature, expounding on the goodness of the plant, and the damage humans have inflicted on the planet. Her award winning show, “Family Secrets,” remains the longest running one-woman show in off Broadway history. Her stint as Mother Earth in “Oh My Goddess” shows us a special

relationship with the plant – one only a mother could love; while her interpretation of “Miguel,” a black bandana sporting low rider, shares her masculine side, but he’s really just another way to share the message. “My new show, ‘Taking the High Road: Comic confessions from behind the Cannabis curtain,’ is a radical theatrical response to the war on pot,” Glaser shared. “During the second act of the show I dramatize the raid on my cooperative and my spiritual response to the fact that I’m still under investigation with no formal charges.” PTRD: POST TRAUMATIC RAID DISORDER While the family, friends and patients of Love In It Co-op slowly get over “PTRD,” otherwise known as “Post Traumatic Raid Disorder,” the business as usual aspect of helping patients goes on. With no charges filed one can safely say it was a “smash and grab” job at best, so far, and while the multi-agency team may have walked away with thousands of dollars of legally earned funds, the plant and its people prevail in Mendo. “Taking the High Road is really a guide to mental health,” Glaser expounded. “It’s a political manifesto designed to make the world a happier place.” Love In It Co-op is located at 10464 Lansing St., Mendocino, CA 95460. Measure 91

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

MARIJUANA NEWS Congratulations Oregon cannabis consumers! The results of November’s historic vote are in and Measure 91 has passed, making Oregon the third state in the union to legalize recreational cannabis. A whopping 55.6% of Oregon voters supported Measure 91, giving us a resounding victory and providing our legislators and regulators with a strong mandate to implement this new law. Despite this triumph, we still have as many questions as answers, so we thought it would be helpful to let our readers know a little bit about how we got here, what the law does and doesn’t do and what the laws and rules might look like going forward.

reational cannabis in Oregon. That means that once the law takes effect, anyone physically located within the state can possess up to 8 oz. of dried cannabis flowers at home and up to 1 oz. in public. The law also allows adults in Oregon to possess up to 16 oz. of cannabis concentrates in solid form and up to 72 oz. of cannabis concentrates in liquid form. Smoking in public will remain prohibited. Taxes under the new regime are reasonable, with a tax of $35 per ounce ($540 per pound) to be paid by the grower. This is significantly lower than the taxes in both Washington and Colorado. The law also

Oregon Legislative Session could see as many as 150 different pieces of proposed legislation related to marijuana, covering everything from taxes to lab testing to rules for cities and counties around licensing these businesses. The OLCC will also undertake the process of administrative rulemaking. This will help flesh out all of the details of the law, from determining the qualifications for commercial licenses to determining the way taxes are collected. The legislative session and the rulemaking process will determine the type of rules and laws governing marijuana in Oregon.

“The passage of Measure 91 is an incredibly significant milestone for the liberation of the cannabis plant in our state, our nation and throughout the world.”

History

While Colorado and Washington beat us to the legalization punch, Oregon has a long and storied history with marijuana legalization dating back to the early 1970s. In 1973, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, making that offense a violation (equivalent to a traffic ticket, instead of a misdemeanor or felony). Among those voting for the measure was state Representative (and current Congressman and marijuana advocate) Earl Blumenauer. Two failed attempts to legalize marijuana followed in 1986 and 2012. In 1998, Oregon became the second state, following California, to legalize medical marijuana, but it took until 2013 for the state to authorize medical marijuana shops.

Measure 91

Measure 91 represents “the new gold standard” of marijuana legalization initiatives, according to Ethan Nadelmann, the founder and executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance and one of the world’s foremost authorities on marijuana laws. The new law legalizes adult use of rec-

allows homegrows of up to four flowering plants. Perhaps most importantly, the law protects the medical marijuana system, saying so explicitly in two separate sections. In addition to legalizing possession, Measure 91 allows for the licensing of producers (growers), processors and retailers of recreational marijuana. That means that legal pot shops will be coming soon!

The Road Ahead

So what will the implementation of this new law look like? For starters, the law will come online in phases, beginning on July 1, 2015. On that day, the possession and homegrow rules take effect. Cannabis commerce—commercial growing and processing and legal retail sales—will come later. The law places cannabis commerce within the purview of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) and requires them to begin accepting applications for commercial licenses by January 4, 2016. Expect retail sales to begin in the following months. Before that date, we expect to see some changes and additions to the law. The 2015

All Oregonians can have a voice in this process and we encourage all of you to stay informed. You can contact your state Representative and Senator to express your support or displeasure with proposed rules and laws or simply support organizations who will be at the capitol representing cannabis consumers and businesses, groups like the Oregon Growers’ PAC or Compassionate Oregon. The passage of Measure 91 is an incredibly significant milestone for the liberation of the cannabis plant in our state, our nation and throughout the world. With legalization measures likely to pass in California, Nevada and several other states in 2016, historians will likely look back on the 2014 election as the point when the tide turned irrevocably toward legalization. We have the benefit of going second, which means that we can learn from the mistakes of Washington and Colorado. This gives us a special opportunity here to show the world that legal cannabis can be an asset to society and to create a model for other states contemplating legalization. What an amazing time!

Afroman is Back! Putting a Positive Spin on Pot Written by Johnny Halfhand Illustration by Angie McFarlane

When it comes to anthems, Because I Got High is kind of the stoner Star Spangled Banner. Afroman’s hit track memorialized the languid, idle high of a Friday night; and in time, it became the quintessential description of the stoner stereotype. “I was gonna pay my child support, but then I got high,” he raps in the original, continuing on to recount getting high, doing nothing, and eventually ending up on the curb. While it’s pretty clear he wrote the song tongue-in-cheek, marijuana opponents often point to this song and say it’s obvious what ills marijuana brings to society. “Now I’m sleeping on the sidewalk, and I know why - Because I got high!” Now the prolific purple puffer has returned with a remake of his old classic in collaboration with NORML and Weedmaps. “Ironically, I care about everything,” he says at the beginning. In an effort to bring more attention to marijuana’s positive qualities ahead of 2014 ballot initiatives, it was certainly apt timing for a fresh take on what pot can do for individuals and society at large. Afroman raps on marijuana as a safer alternative to prescription drugs, a growing concern recently as prescription pill abuse has quietly become an epidemic in the US. He spits rhymes about marijuana’s proven ability to improve glaucoma and other conditions. Marijuana also serves as a healthier habit than cigarettes he says, and in comparison to alcohol, he praises cannabis for having no real hangover, saying, “I woke up feeling fine, and I know why - Because I got high!”

The veteran MC drops further knowledge about how the state can benefit from tax revenue on legalized weed, build schools, and fund drug treatment programs for serious addictions. He also sheds light on the benefits of reducing gang crime and closing down illicit markets. With legalization moving forward across the country, a catchy anthem is absolutely critical to spreading awareness. Big ups to Afroman for giving love to the pot-positive movement!

KARMA ORGANICS JOINT PACKS Filtered Pre-Rolls To Go WRITTEN BY LAUREN TERRY PHOTO BY DANIEL ERICH Everyone who’s heard the crackle of buds burning has had the thought of joint packs float through their head at some point. The finale of Weeds showed their interpretation of it with “Puff Dragons”. Many dream of a marijuana-friendly future where joints and spliffs are purchased in a corner store like cigarettes, and believe it or not that fantasy has now materialized right under our own noses. Karma Organics, from Clackamas, Oregon, has created their own twist on the concept: sleek packs containing six filtered joints, available in Indica and Sativa for just $25 a pack. The packs come in airtight packaging to maintain freshness on the shelves, and the nugs used to roll the joints are always high quality free of stem or trim. I was impressed at how well rolled they were, as I was able to were jumble the pack around in my purse for the entire night without shake falling out. One joint makes for a solid session

with two people, or a fantastic solo smoke for those of us with a higher tolerance. Not only does the filter work to keep resin from staining your lips or fingertips, but it also makes for an extremely smooth drag. I’d highly recommend these for less experienced smokers or those intimidated by the thought of rolling their own. What also makes Karma Organic’s take on this classic idea unique is the founder has a degree in renewable energy, and sustainability is a major part of their grow methods and business philosophy. They use vegan nutrients exclusively with no synthetics or animal products ever involved. In the grow facility, their visionary water capture system saves 20,000 gallons per year, and a motorized light system cuts down on the number of fixtures, conserving thousands of watts each month. These joint packs are genuinely ahead of their time, and we don’t even need hovercrafts to get them.

HERBAN MYTHS

HERBAN MYTHS ANSWERED BY ALISON MALSBURY OF

MYTH: Taking Marijuana from Washington to Oregon is Legal. Now that both Oregon and Washington have legalized recreational marijuana for adults twenty-one and over, we are hearing people talk about how taking their legal pot across the Washington-Oregon border is no big deal. Unfortunately, it is a big deal. It should first be noted that possession of recreational marijuana for adults over the age of twenty-one will not be legal in Oregon until its new law goes into effect on July 1, 2015. Possession in Oregon until that point must be in accordance with Oregon’s current medical marijuana laws. However, taking the cannabis you obtained legally in either Oregon or Washington across state lines - even though both jurisdictions provide for recreational marijuana use - still constitutes a federal crime. Pursuant to Section 812 of Title 21 of the U.S. Code, and despite the national trend toward state legalization, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I Controlled Substance. Because the federal government has the authority to regulate interstate commerce, they have the ability to prosecute individuals for transporting marijuana across

80

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

state lines, even if the transport is from one legal state jurisdiction to another. Note that even possessing cannabis within a state that deems it legal for recreational purposes violates federal law. Although the feds have emphasized that enforcement will not be a priority in states with tightly regulated recreational marijuana regimes, we have no reason to believe they will look the other way when it comes to interstate transport, and every reason to believe they will make enforcement a priority. It is important to be aware that transporting any Schedule I Controlled Substance, including marijuana, across any state line is a federal felony. This is the case even if your medical marijuana patient card is honored in the next state over, and even if you are moving between jurisdictions that have legalized recreational marijuana. Keep and consume your cannabis in the state where you purchased it, or run the risk of federal criminal charges for transporting a controlled substance.
