This strain comes from potent stock. Cotton Candy Kush offers both physical relaxation from the indica Lavender Kush and a soothing cerebral buzz from the sativa genes in Power Plant. Lavender is frequently recommended as a bedtime strain, while Power Plant is such a high-THC sativa that smokers of lower-tolerance are recommended to take it slow.

These fluffy, primo nugs live up to their name. The coloring is bright green with soft orange hairs surrounding each one like a sugary, ginger cloud. Grown indoors and patiently slowcured, the leafy buds are noticeably soft to the touch and pillowy when broken up.

At first, Cotton Candy Kush smells refreshingly sweet like a peppermint. A few of Lavender’s floral terpenes are still present here, in addition to the fresh, citrus notes from Power Plant. The scent is crisp and green, reminding me of the young shoots soon to break through the cold ground this spring.

This is arguably the sweetest strain I’ve ever tasted. Slightly floral and fruity, the taste is so flavorful that even the smoke has a sweet scent to it, and after trying a bowl in a bong, my lips tasted like candy. The treat is light and fleeting - it’s difficult not to keep packing bowls to continue enjoying the flavor.

Whether it’s vintage cameras and record players, or retro hemlines on party dresses, everyone seems to be stuck in a reminiscent mood. These bite-sized cookies from Sweet Green Grass are a similar call to simpler times, and their classic Chocolate Chip Bites taste like the best memories of cooking with redeyed college roommates. Based in Eugene, OR, Sweet Green Grass has improved the basic concept with modern twists, like baking with canna-coconut oil as a healthier alternative to butter, and dynamite packaging that ensures freshness and professional discretion. Each cookie is in an individual wrapper, and one pop-top container holds four cookies. They are available for $6 a piece and $24 for a pack of 4. They offer five different flavors, in addition to seasonal options, and

developed their own signature wheat-free flour blend to be more accessible to a range of patients needs. Their bakers have mastered the perfect cookie texture: soft and chewy, with only a slight taste of cannabis in the dough. Each cookie contains 150 mg of THC, making them ideal for effective, low-calorie dosage without loads of empty sugar and carbohydrates. Patients with organ issues or nausea have found great success with SGG’s cookies, because the infused coconut-oil is easy to digest and still notably efficient with alleviating pain. If you’ve ever felt rushed while shopping for medicine, you’ll find refuge in the Exodus Wellness Center. Located on the corner of SE Powell and 162nd, this quaint dispensary strives to redefine customer service with their living room-inspired social club. In case one feels like unwinding after a long day, wooden picnic tables sit in front of a flat screen tv and a gaming console with several controllers. Owners Rick and Cat operate on the patients’ time, never making them feel pressured to make their selection and get a move on. People are encouraged to relax, order a plate of hot food if they’re hungry, and enter the bud room when they feel like it. Once inside, there is an impressive selection of flower and edibles, as well as concentrates from vendors like Mad Farma and Golden Xtrx. Exodus was born from a lack of adequate customer service in the area. Rick and Cat knew people should be treated with more empathy and patience than what they were seeing. They gathered a team with the same values, who volunteered their time to help get the dispensary on its feet. When I asked if their name was inspired by Bob Marley’s song, they told me that it was a Rasta reference, and more of a traditional reference to “a way out.” Before opening Exodus, Cat worked long hours that kept her away from her children. The dispensary allowed for them to build new careers and improve the quality of life for their loved ones. Open over a year now, they currently host weekly football and UFC viewing events in their social club. More than offering modern amenities, Cat emphasized that their success is built on their sincerity. “We came out strong, and we haven’t changed. We put customer service first in a way that no one else does.” Whether you’re in the neighborhood, or just had an especially rough Monday, consider escaping to Exodus on your way home.

Med with Love Chai Infused with Love

As I sat across from David Bundren, the owner of Med With Love, a local Portland Company, at nearby Portland cafĂŠ, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but think I was sitting across from some of the best energy I had been around in a while. Quick to smile with his answers to my questions, and with laughter in his voice, I almost instantly understood how the beverages this company

makes, are infused with love. The conversation flowed easily, like with an old friend, except I had only met David once, and briefly at that. As I learned about Med With Love, I fell in love with the process in which these beverages are made, almost as much as I am with the fine products themselves.

EDIBLES Q&A WITH DAVID BUNDREN DOPE: Please tell us about the products that Med With Love makes. What products does your company produce? David: Our flagship product is our Chai, both the Oh Ji and the Chocolate. Soon after that came our Kombuchas, slightly by accident, first the Chai Bouch, and then the Green Bouch - that’s the one made with fresh cannabis juice that we currently offer in an activated as well as a non-activated form. DOPE: How long have you been an established business, and where are you based? David: I have been brewing Chai for over a decade, ever since I started practicing and teaching Kundalini Yoga. I have been passionately making food that is tasty, as well as beautiful and nutritious for longer than that. We have an operations center in both Portland, Oregon, where I live, and in my native hometown of Seattle, Washington. DOPE: I noticed on the labels of your products that you listed many organic ingredients. What other types of ingredients are used in your products? David: We use whole foods, superfoods, and plant materials that are organic, sourced locally, and grown and produced ethically. This is an easy place for our core values (Sacred Local Organic Wellness) to come in. We would also like to be part of the solution for helping people have less sugar and other allergens in their diet. Our Chai, for example, is lightly sweetened and contains no milk (dairy or otherwise), giving you the freedom to drink it as is or to make it into your own blend of sweet and creamy. DOPE: I know that some of your beverages have raw cannabis juice in them, yet still taste delicious! Can you please explain how much activated THC vs non activated THC is in each of your beverages? David: We generally aim for an 85-15 activated to non-activated THC content in our cannabis extracts for our psycho-active products. For our non-psycho-active the numbers are of course much different, with about 95% of the THC remaining in its acidic form. DOPE: Your company name says it all, how do you infuse love into the meds? David: I make myself part of the process from the beginning to the end. From knowing the growers, to having my hands on the plants from which the oil is extracted, into the kitchen - which I absolutely treat as a temple and sacred space - personally meeting all of our vendors and hand-picking the ingredients. My day starts with my yoga practice. Then, once my family has transitioned out to work and school, I get to work in my kitchen. Production is a wonderful opportunity for my Bhakti Yoga - my devotional practice. I sing sacred chants and songs while brewing and bottling, really infusing love into a tangible product that then goes out into the world and delivers its magic as much as the recipient allows it to.

there, they asked me if I wanted to help them with some gardening. And so for about the next year I worked with them - I especially enjoy working with the plants while they are still alive and growing - and one day, we’re talking about my Chai business that I was starting to bring out into the conventional marketplace and they suggested that it would make an awesome medicated beverage. That was definitely an early milestone in the genesis of Med With Love and I have a lot of gratitude for that series of events that has led me here. DOPE: Any products coming up that our audience should watch for? David: Be on the lookout for a Mandarin-Ginger Soda that we plan to release by spring of 2015! Also on our radar are a few more beverages that mix and match well with our Chai. DOPE: What strains do you use in your products? What extraction methods? David: We are constantly searching for the best strains and methods of extraction. We are currently working with some private suppliers that make us some really excellent extracts made through both CO2 Compression as well as Proprietary forms of Ethanol Extraction. We strive for sources of Sustainable, Organic Farmers and we develop longterm, strategic relationships with our growers, just as with our other vendors. In terms of strains, we have a really solid Blueberry-dominant that translates really well into our extracts. Blackberry Kush, OG Kush, Sour Diesel, and Girl Scout Cookies are a few others that we have been working with. In 2015 we are looking at bringing out an expanded line to include some special formulations for Specific Medical Conditions. ACDC, for example is a 1:20 THC-CBD ratio that we are looking at to help people address Epilepsy, Autism, and a few other major complaints - without the mind-altering effects. We are also working on standardizing a formula with White Widow for an everyday, more head-space experience, and something like a Diesel Tonic for a more body-based experience, still with the other health benefits of a high-CBD strain. DOPE: What kind of effects should patients expect when they consume your products? David: Before I even add cannabis we expect better health, better digestion, better circulation, and improved vitality. Post adding cannabis I expect a happier, more energetic, more creative, more loving, less depressed, less stressed, pain relieved person. DOPE: Is there anything else that you would like us to know? David: I really encourage people to slow down at least once a day, even just for a minute. Take a breath, unplug, think of what you’re grateful for, and send some love to yourself and out to the world. Remember one of the laws of alchemy - it takes love to make love.

DOPE: What inspired your company’s beginnings? David: A few years ago I went up to Seattle to do a weekend of Balinese Monkey Chanting with a teacher and a small group of friends. Some long-time friends invited me to stay over with them and, while I was

12.13.14 It’s hard to imagine only a short time ago our industry was considered “taboo” or “underground.” With the turnout at this year’s Dope Industry Awards (DIA’s) you can see the wave of change has fully hit our shores. The night was one to remember with over 700 guests in attendance at one of Seattle’s most iconic venues; Showbox Sodo. The night was hosted by the always entertaining Jose Bolanos from Movin’ 92.5 who kept the crowd laughing as all 25 awards were handed out. The musical guests, Eldridge Gravy & The Court Supreme brought the funk to the DIA’s with over two-hours of dance inducing tunes. Many awards were given out to very deserving businesses and individuals along with a very special innagural “Lifetime Achievement Award” to the one-and-only Marc Emery, presented by the legendary Vivian McPeak (founder of Hempfest), with an acceptance speech coming via-video from Vancouver B.C.. This award will now be named the “Emery Award” for each year’s recipients who will be chosen based on their efforts to progress the cannabis movement. ne could say that Adam Dunn has a knack for cannabusiness. He followed his pipe dream to Amsterdam at 19 years old, arriving well before the Red Light District became an official stop on college euro-trips. Armed with a grounded sense of

humor and youthful ambition, he started several companies, resulting in his multi-million dollar enterprise today. His seed company, THSeeds and his store, Hempworks, are doing well back in Amsterdam, and his clothing company, Hoodlamb, is advancing hemp fashion far beyond rasta colored loungewear with chic, modern styles and textiles. However, as 2010 approached, Dunn took notice of the changes in the Netherland’s drug laws. Rules were tightening up in Europe, while the United States began to beckon with possibility from across the pond. He made his way back to the States five years ago, ventured around to check out the progress within the industry, and eventually settled in Colorado. Dunn now hosts a show on iCannabis Radio, “The Adam Dunn Show,” which covers marijuana happenings as they merge with mainstream culture. “One of the things I do on my show is work to unravel the origins of the really great strains, and bring those people back into the fold, because they’ve been disenfranchised by a lot of infighting. Every great strain has massive infighting built into it, that’s how it all works. If it doesn’t, it’s not a great strain. Why would you fight over a shitty strain?” His current project is to get to the bottom of one of the most disputed legendary strains: OG Kush. “This one guy who’d been listening to my show, he got in touch and talked about how we’ve been lied to about wars, we’ve been lied to for hundreds of years. There’s so much disinformation going around that in just 19 years with this one plant, we’re already at the point where only a few people remain on the planet who know the true story behind OG Kush. So we started the O-Genome project. Pulling up to the quaint beige house, nestled discreetly in Eugene’s Whiteaker District, patients might wonder if they’ve reached their destination. There’s no fancy signage. No green cross. But just through that non-descript door, lies a collective group of like minded growers, producing small batches of organic medicine for patients treating a myriad of conditions. On my first visit, I was greeted with smiles and the smell of fresh baked goods. Jon, the head budtender, led me into a small, but comfortable patient waiting area filled with cannabis related magazines, books and videos. There was one patient ahead of me, so we chatted up popular strains, CBD and pheno-hunting. His knowledge was refreshing and informative. “It’s really important that everyone here is educated about cannabis and its medicinal uses. We’re all patients first and foremost, so we strive to give our patients the same kind of care, compassion and knowledge we would expect if we were on the other side of the counter”. Upon entering the medicine room, the first thing I noticed was that this was going to be a one-on-one patient experience. No big glitzy retail area with multiple budtenders and patients. Just you and your budtender. “People’s health and their care is vitally important to us. We don’t sell “pot”. We are medicine providers and patients deserve our undivided attention,” explained owners Debra Grosella & Adam Jacques. Then I saw them. Sitting there on the display case were gluten-free, organic handmade goodies from the Guild’s in-house line of edibles called Eat Half First. I was excited to see both savory and sweet choices. Pesto. BBQ beef jerky. Peppermint bark. Even pizzelles. Their menu and potency change regularly based on patient wants and needs because according to Grosella, in this case, “food is medicine.” Their selection of all indoor organic flower was impressive too.. The Oregon Growers Political Action Committee Written By Lauren Terry The conversation surrounding marijuana legalization tends to focus on the individual’s right to have access; the individual’s right to consume it. However progressive these discussions may be, rules have yet to be set to appropriately license and regulate growers. Portland lawyer Amy Margolis saw this flaw in our state’s marijuana legislation, rounded up a group of dedicated growers, and hired a lobbyist. Thus the Oregon Growers Political Action Committee was born, to work towards a safe and legal business

environment for all. The group has already made huge strides in connecting growers of different cities and methods of operation. Margolis’ law firm, Emerge, has quickly grown to be a full-service office, representing everyone from dispensaries and investors, to edible companies and cannabis processors. When I asked Margolis why a PAC wields more influence than a run-of-the-mill advocacy group, she explained how important it is to have a presence during the legislative session.

GROW “I used to lobby myself, it was clear to me that the cannabis community needed people on the ground in order to get their voices heard. People didn’t know how to get involved, so when no one was lobbying when Senate Bill 1351 happened, a lot of people got screwed.” The PAC’s first goal is to address the lack of actual regulations for growers. “The OMMP isn’t a commercial statute. We want to see a licensing process established for growers and processors...There are always going to be people who want to restrict who, how and where marijuana is grown, and we want to assert the growers’ authority while those rules are being set.” The state legislature and the OLCC don’t know much about how the system currently functions, so having a voice in the capitol will contribute real, useful input while major decisions are made. They’re the first entity to make it a point to educate lawmakers about how everything works. The OR Grower’s PAC has met with enthusiastic support since it’s conception, and the growers will be funding an additional lobbyist for the upcoming session, ensuring that the community’s opinions won’t be dismissed. According to Margolis, the biggest obstacle to the PAC comes from inside the community itself. Old geographic and cultural divides have built up years of tension between Southern Oregon and the Willamette Valley, and indoor vs. outdoor operations. Most experienced growers come from an era when you couldn’t answer a knock at the door without fear, much less swap lighting methods over a pint at the bar. Now though, at this point in time, it’s become in everyone’s best interest to work together, fighting for the same rights and safeties. From Margolis’ perspective, “The industry can be it’s own worst enemy. A unified voice will always be more effective, and that’s always the hardest part. Being open with information within the community will speed up positive change.” Matt Walstatter, a Portland grower and dispensary owner who is a founding member of the PAC. He knows the legislators won’t listen until they see unity, and has worked in a cooperative way to be a relatable face for the Northern population. “It’s important to present the PAC as inclusive; we represent everyone. All the regions share common goals. In the end,

we all want to function without anyone or any rule threatening our way of life.” Fortunately, trust issues amongst the varied groups in Oregon’s cannabis industry are finally fading. On his last visit to southern Oregon for a conference held by the Sungrown Guild, Walstatter saw better relations between all the growers. “It was like Measure 91 cleared the air. No more arguing over whether or not recreational should pass; now it’s time to act. People are opening their minds to working together and sharing ideas.” Communicating values and concerns to one another is the initial step in getting to the core of what the growers of Oregon need from the state government. The PAC now contains members across the state, from Southern Oregon, to Bend, and along the coast, and they increase in number every day. Fifteen members were present at the Sungrown Guild’s December conference, including Margolis, who was in equally high spirits over the increased congeniality amongst the attendees. “It was so exciting to see everyone talking to one another. Those collaborative conversations are more influential than laws; those show real progress. Sharing resources is more effective and strengthens our team.” They’re currently focused on building a team to backup the lobbyists in Salem this session, and Walstatter intends to be in Salem weekly during the rulemaking. He expects the legislature to focus first on to whether or not the OMMP will undergo any changes, then to city and local taxes, and regulation of lab testing. Walstatter’s chief objective is to encourage the OHA and OLCC to create rules that allow evolution with research. “Everything is still so new, labs are always changing their methods with additional understanding. There has to be room for adjustment so we can improve our processes with further research.” Now that marijuana has been legalized in Oregon, the industry is solidifying and developing into a more complete system. The PAC represents professionalism, the protection of civil liberties, and the means to navigate bureaucratic procedures. When their lobbyists step into the ring during the upcoming session, I think it’s safe to say legislators won’t be plagued with any remaining associations of Cheech and Chong.

CBD is an often-overlooked cannabinoid, but when coupled with THC, it can provide significant relief for patients that suffer from autoimmune and neurological disorders like MS, Epilepsy, and Fibromyalgia. Humans are not the only ones to appreciate cannabis. Fungal species from various crawls of life find comfort between the parts of the flower and upon leaves of cannabis plants. Some of these are relatively harmless and some deserve more attention. According to Oregon’s dispensary law and administrative rules, dispensaries must ensure that all medical marijuana passes a mold screen. The rules allow for a mold and mildew limit of up to 10,000 CFU/g (Colony Forming Units per gram). Our observations show that mold screening may not be sufficient for assessing the safety of medicine. Since the implementation of the rules, Green Leaf Lab has analyzed samples that did not pass the test. The good news is that samples with high fungal counts were screen out of the dispensaries. However, there are many samples that pass under the 10,000 CFU/g radar which may still contain dangerous molds. These samples that pass are essentially false negatives; they are deemed safe for dispensary distribution yet maybe inoculated with harmful molds and mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by certain fungi that adversely affect human health. The extent of the adverse effects are unknown. Patients with robust immune systems need not worry, but caution is a good principle to follow as few clinical studies have been conducted on this subject. Patients seeking healthy means of consuming cannabis should consider what type of fungi are acceptable for their overall physical condition. Sample 1 “passes” with 3,040 CGU/g, which is well below the limit. Samples 2 and 3 fail because they exceed the 10,000 CFU/ limit. Which sample in figure 1 would you rather medicate with? This question may be challenging to answer as a mold screen cannot differentiate between species of fungi. Not all molds produce mycotoxins but the species that produce them do FIGURE 1: MOLD SCREENS, ACCOMPANIED WITH REPORTED CFU/G so depending on the growth substrate and conditions. For example, in the case of Aspergillus fumigatus, a mycotoxin producing fungi also has the ability to infect the user. When inhaled, the spores of A. fumigatus are capable of colonizing within lung tissue, potentially spreading to other organs. Keeping the medicine supply safe does not require exterminating all mold strains and the use of harmful pesticides is not the antidote. The solution is a healthy balance of species, one that reflects a balanced growing medium and environment. This means setting zero tolerance limits for known harmful molds and requiring a mycotoxin assay. Figure 2 shows common molds known to be prevalent in cannabis with the adverse-health affecting species on the right side. Other molds, as shown on the left, are relatively non-toxic however cause crop damage. Fungi are not to be feared across the board but knowledge-based precaution is a must. Improved and informed methods for testing will assure safe medicine for all.

Federal Legalization on Native American Reservations The U.S. Justice Department will no longer consider it illegal for Native Americans to cultivate and sell cannabis on their sovereign lands. The laws of the state that the reservation is located in will play no part and it sounds as if the federal government is letting the individual tribes decide what they’d like the rules to be. However, while this might seem like a positive, it turns out the decision was in response to a request from tribes in states where marijuana is legal, asking the federal government to enforce bans on legal pot on their reservations, which the justice department flatly declined.

A Not-So-Merry-Christmas A woman in San Bernardo, Chile, has been arrested after it turned out that her 6-foot tall christmas tree was, in fact, a large, flowering weed plant. With presents scattered about the bottom of the stalk, police raided her home and arrested her after finding 20 other cannabis plants to go along with the festive Kushmas tree. While Chile has seen recent steps forward for medical cannabis, producing and selling it is still clearly highly discouraged – even if you dress it up with the cheeriest decorations around.

Port Arena is a tiny town of about 450 residents located just south of Albion and Mendocino proper, with Highway 1 converging onto its Main Street, and dotted with motels and charming bungalows from the 1920s. Leonard Ochs arrived in Port Arena ten years ago with his life partner, Nancy, ironically for her health issues. Ten months ago Lenard Ochs was given two to four months to live, when he was diagnosed with Stage4 Sickle Cell Carcinoma. The tumors protruding several inches from his neck were threatening his life support, hindering the work of arteries carrying blood from his heart. Today, the mass is one-third smaller thanks to a daily dose of strong cannabis oil. “We actually came back to California from Alaska for Nancy’s health care,” explained Ochs. “She’s a stage four breast cancer survivor, and has been through chemo, radiation, surgeries – you name it. It’s been twelve years now that she’s been in remission.” Nancy sits by Ochs’ side in a sunny spot in the couple’s back yard, her head resting on his shoulder. She is waft-like from continued illness and complications from myriad surgeries, including organ removal. The aftermath of traditional therapies have created a seemingly domino effect of illness to treatment, causing further complications and a need for a lifetime of prescription meds.

Nancy is just beginning to think about ingesting Cannabis, as the traditional options provided to her only failed and disappointed, and part of her inspiration comes from Leonard’s success with his treatment. Leonard sports a large, white bandage on the left side of his neck, crediting Nancy to his care in changing them daily, as he shares how he came to use Cannabis oil as his only treatment. Tumors associated with this type of cancer are typically located on the ears, lower lip, and the back of hands – areas most likely to be burned by the sun or exposed to “chemicals and radiation” as detailed in the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute’s site, cancer.org. Ochs tumor was pronounced and growing rapidly, making surgery precarious, and decisions regarding treatment difficult, to say the least. “I was not sure I was going to let them do chemo and radiation,” he admitted. “Something about them wanting me to sign a form allowing them to poison me didn’t sit right. It was too much for my brain to take. Hippocrates said, ‘first do no harm.’ I told my oncologist every time I come here someone hurts me.” Depending on the size and placement of tumors associated with Sickle Cell Carcinoma, treatment can include surgery,

chemotherapy and/or radiation, and therein lay the challenges. As tumors wrap around vital organs, nerves, and arteries, traditional treatments damage the good and the bad cells, as they do not discriminate. “The treatments are big business,” Leonard said, “when Nancy was going to the UCSF (University of California at San Francisco) oncology department twelve years ago it was four buildings – now it’s eight buildings. More people are sick. In the 1900s it was one in twenty people with cancer. “Beyond Buds” by Ed Rosenthal Ed Once Again Shows Why He Is The “Ganja Guru” WRITTEN BY SHARON LETTS

or the past thirty years Ed Rosenthal has been known as the “Guru of Ganja,” penning more than a dozen books on the subject of cultivating the world’s favorite and most illicit herb. His “Ask Ed” column ran in High Times for nearly twenty years, allowing him inside Amsterdam’s grow scene via its Cups, giving him access to greenhouse secrets. That access became our benefit as he shared European horticultural skills on U.S. soil, via his how-to books self-published through his own Quick Trading Co. with wife Jane Klein, that still continue to stay ahead of the Cannabis curve. His stint teaching at Oaksterdam University in Oakland, California gave us the, “Marijuana Grower’s Handbook,” now the official handbook of Oak U, and considered the “Bible” of the one room grow. I last reviewed Ed’s pest book, “Marijuana Pest & Disease Control” aimed at helping all gardeners with common bug and disease issues. It was considered a crossover book, as all gardeners share the same garden problems and pests and dealing with them is relatively the same. As a professional gardener who has never grown Cannabis, yet lives

in and around it, this has been a bone of contention as I’ve watch “growers” ignore basic gardening techniques I learned from my mom, who learned from her grandmother. BEYOND GARDENING Medicine is my area – making medicinal products from various plant materials and delivery methods is what I do, what I help others with, and a common theme in my writing. While I’m no dabber, I can hold my own with the best of them, and I want to know my medicine is made safely, with the best materials, in the best way possible - and that’s what this book is all about. With “Beyond Buds”, Ed teams up with fellow Bay area weed writer David Downs with great results, as Downs has been covering the Cannabis movement in California consistently now for several years, starting up blogs and writing for many magazines. Back in 2002 Rosenthal penned “Ask Ed: Marijuana Gold – Trash to Stash,” opening everyone’s eyes to the many uses of the leaf and stem

MEDIA REVIEW we had been tossing out for decades. The methods have since been refined, with an added focus on safety, a big priority for the home chemist who may attempt their own concentrates. Concentrates are key in delivering good medicine into our system, for this plant is complex in its uses, and we just need to access the goodness within. Understanding what and where that goodness is in the plant is everything. “Glands” with “resin” are detailed early on, leaving a discussion on “terpenes” and “cannabinoids” at the back of the book. This perplexed me as we all know now that terpenes are where the essential oils of the plant are, and where the medicine is stored within the glands. That being said, this book leans towards recreation, so the terpene and CBD placement as an afterthought appears appropriate. ASK ED The “Ask Ed” faction is incorporated early in each chapter where, addressing questions from a readers, he further explains the “what and why” of each process. I especially liked the bit on “shoe hash,” which I learned from a man in Paris who was making hash in his shoe as we sat curbside at a café – and had been since he left London the day prior. This little antidote alone educates and enlightens as to just how easy it is to make medicine with cannabis and other plants. The mantra “It’s just a plant,” shines through in this book, demonstrating its versatility in delivery methods. The vaporizing section seems to be more of a showcase for the myriad types of vapes out there on the market, as does the overview of various medicine making machines throughout the book. It’s nice to see so many ancillary producers of machines represented alongside tips on how to use them. The vaping section is an excellent beginners guide to this newly popular method of delivery, which is now allowing more patients to medicate easily, quickly and covertly. This traveling patient has benefitted from vaping on the road. Be it a plane, train or boat, medicating isn’t a problem with a vape. My Vapor Bros. box is a must-have for hotel room stays, doing away with the towel at the door routine or the blowing smoke into the ceiling fan while standing on the toilet trick. Come on, I know you’ve done it.

A LITTLE DAB WILL DO YA Even the most ardent stoner unwilling to admit that Cannabis is medicine is getting benefits just from smoking it. Partake in a dab and the effects are more pronounced, and therefore the medicinal effects for those suffering under the ever-widening Autistic Spectrum and other emotional disorders. I met a man at a Tacoma, Washington Cannabis farmer’s market who witnessed a man recover from a severe stroke by smoking wax. The man had been in a wheel chair and wearing a helmet after the trauma, but he is now up, walking around, and improving daily. It was nice to see cannabis medicine suggested for Multiple Sclerosis at the top of the dabbing chapter, and the hint to MS patients that a hit of strong concentrated oil or wax may help them receive the same healing effects as an entire joint. I’ll go one step further and suggest that when MS patients ingest stronger oil or juice the raw leaf, their MS may be put into remission – but that’s another story. BUTANE: THE BAD BOY OF BASE Chapter 7 is important as it’s devoted to the at times dreaded butane - the black sheep of the concentrate family. A shocker to some, the message at the top of the chapter sites how much healthier it is to smoke a concentrate than to burn a bud and ingest carbon – and I must agree, happily. This is the kind of education we need, as for too long now word of mouth has only imparted its own misinformation about the process, leading to all those explosions we hear about, butane included. Ed wants you to look at the smoking of concentrates in this way; regular smoking gives you only roughly 15% of the THC from the plant material. When smoking concentrates, the count is as high as 80% THC. For recreation alone, concentrates are said to offer a superior high, and for medicinal delivery, there’s no comparison. Any questions? Ask Ed. It’s not all fun, games and healing though, as Ed also expounds on the dangers of butane, and the environmental impact of using such a toxic substance. Ventilation is key, but other rules aren’t as obvious, like don’t smoke around your mix, don’t wear synthetic fabrics, and don’t use your cell phone. It’s the little things that can make a difference and with butane, understanding the potential hazards is everything. CO² deservingly gets its own chapter, and it reads like chemisty 101, detailing the ins and outs of the highly technical process. Stainless steel machines are commonly used for this favorite smoking liquid. Found in just about every vape pen out there, CO² extracted oil can effectively utilize the stem as well as the green, and it’s as economical

While in Denver I visited Organalabs, a high-tech extraction company using the same stainless steel organic cold press system that the tea company Celestial Seasonings uses in the nearby city of Boulder. I’m happy to see this process come out of the home kitchen and into a more mainstream production environment, because it will mean more accountability to do things safely in a clean and professional way. HISTORICALLY HEALTHY Chapter nine is my chapter. Tinctures made with alcohol or glycerin are the most common delivery methods a patient can use for a plethora of ailments and can be made easily and safely at home. As the chapter states, prior to prohibition, tinctures were the most common cannabis delivery method in America. In fact, prior to Dupont’s patenting of nylon in 1942 and subsiquent production of synthetic pharmaceuticals, herbal tinctures were the norm

for treating most of our ailments and disease prevention. Cannabis was just another helpful herb listed on the US list of botanical medicinal herbs up until that time. The good news is cannabis was just added back to the list this year, allowing herbalists to come out of the closet on weed. The chapter on capsules is sadly a short one, but it’s a good, well-written chapter giving patients an idea of how to make them, although the main focus seems to be on the THC delivery instead of the whole medicine. For those suffering from serious ailments, canna caps are essential. I personally make them with Rick Simpson Oil or RSO, adding coconut oil to the mix for delivery. It’s the only way this menopausal woman sleeps at night, and oftentimes caps are the only way patients can take such strong oil. What isn’t mentioned in this chapter are suppositories – touted as the best delivery option for RSO in treating cancer and other serious ailments, it bypasses the digestive system, getting the medicine right into the blood stream and organs for healing. Patients report no “head high” in using suppositories, allowing them to be more functional during treatment.

Again, the edibles section opens with points regarding discreet recreational use, but those who need to keep the medicine in their system rely on this smoke free, longer lasting option. When I first began ingesting cannabis, some medibles at night were the only way I could get any sleep at all. Now all of my cooking oils, butter, honey, and drinking alcohols are infused, giving me added daily doses that keep me off of the eight prescription meds I needed prior to becoming a full-time patient. The topical section goes into the how and whys of topical use, as well as explaining the uses for the root of the plant, which is a medicinal compound too often discarded. Topical lotions and salves are easy for the first time herbalist to make, and a good introductory product for patients to try, as there are no psychoactive effects in using topical lotions for pain. This chapter also touches upon poultices – an ancient practice of making a paste from the plant using alcohol, glycerin or water. Since the skin acts like a sponge, absorbing the vital medicine readily, these packs work well

against swelling, inflammation and ultimately, pain. I’ve even heard of poultices being used on small tumors below the skin to draw them out. Lastly, Ed gives us recipes for medibles, including a handy conversion table every good cook needs, given that cooking is really science at its very base level. Although effective for decades, the sharing of information regarding good medicine has also left room for misinformation and unhealthy practices to surface, and there is no room for continued mistakes in this everchanging controversial cannabis climate. It’s time to do things right. “Beyond Buds” will surely be another one of Rosenthal’s dog-eared go-to books for making good medicine safely and cleanly, and this patient is eternally grateful for Ed’s continued good work. TROG’s “The Cooked Book” 120 Pieces of Herb-Fueled Artwork

Each piece seems to be leaping off the page; so frantic with action and prolific detail that there is a feeling that there is not enough canvas in the world for Trog and his neopsychadelic posters. Many of the artworks in the book are posters for weed related events such as Seattle Hempfest, HempCon, and the Hash Bash, along with many others. Hailing from Australia, Trog does a lot of work for bands like The Offspring, Kottonmouth Kings, and Slightly Stoopid, grounding him strongly in the West Coast cannabis scene. The art has an anti-authoritarian, counter-culture bend to it,

reminiscent of classic psychedelia of the 1960’s, with a modern twist. There is enough going on in every page that you can come back and look through it time and again, finding new pieces that you may not have appreciated fully the first time. There is very little text in this book, other than a tongue-in-cheek reminder on page 63 to load another bowl before you finish the rest of it. A great coffee-table book for anyone who wants to zone out, relax, and check out some groovy art, the mind of Trog abounds with creatures, characters, and many assorted substances (a perfect present for your friends who hate the man and drink a lot of 40’s). Clinical Cannabinoid Medicine aka Cannabis in Clinical Practice WRITTEN BY DR. KIMBERLY FREE Cannabis is an amazing herb. It is an anti-inflammatory, reducing swelling and pain. It has antispasmodic and anticonvulsant properties, reducing muscle spasms and seizures. It is antiemetic, preventing nausea and vomiting while simultaneously stimulating the appetite. It also protects nervous system tissue, including the brain, from degeneration and damage due to toxins and plaque buildup. Due to these properties, it has been found to be useful in the treatment of a number of health care conditions, including osteoporosis, cancer, Tourette’s syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease. Cannabis contains multiple types of cannabinoids with over 80 now being clearly identified. Two of the most well-known and researched are Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆⁹-THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabinoids work by acting directly on the multiple cell receptors of the Endocannabinoid System. The Endocannabinoid system (ES) is comprised of multiple cannabinoid receptors, including CB1 and CB2, their endogenous ligands (endocannabinoids) and the proteins and enzymes responsible for their metabolism. The Endocannabinoid System is one of the human body’s most important systems as it supports and regulates a variety of important physiological processes essential to wellbeing, including nociception (pain-sensation), appetite, lipid metabolism, gastrointestinal motility, cardiovascular modulation, motor activity, and memory. Furthermore, the ES is strongly associated with human behavior and the skeletal ES is of major importance. The ES supports

stress recovery and homeostasis, continually returning the body to a state of balance. Cannabis affects this system in a biphasic way, meaning small doses of cannabinoids have the opposite effect of large doses. For example, small doses of cannabis can produce an alert feeling in the body (stimulation), where large doses can cause sedation (inhibition). Also, the cannabinoids contained in cannabis have opposing effects on the body. For example, ∆⁹-THC is anxiety producing at doses of 2-5 mg and psychosis inducing in doses of 20 -25 mg in people naïve to cannabis use, while CBD induces alertness at 15 mg, sedation at 400mg, and has anti-psychotic effects at doses larger than 400mg. THC is psychoactive, and CBD is non-psychoactive. Health conditions which reveal an ES deficiency include anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, migraines and osteoporosis. Health conditions which indicate an ES excess include obesity, schizophrenia, metabolic syndrome, ADHD, and Parkinson’s disease. Cannabis excess syndromes are an important topic of research as the number of people who use cannabis as medicine is increasing and only recently have appropriate dosage recommendations become available. Cannabis works by stimulating the cannabinoid receptors on cells located in the body in areas of varying density. The areas of the body which contain the most cannabinoid receptors include the brain, spinal cord, spleen, bone marrow, liver, lungs, heart, adrenal glands, reproductive organs, and fat cells. Receptors are also found on muscle tissues and multiple cell lines of the immune system. When endocannabinoid cell receptors are stimulated initially, they up regulate or increase in number and response, especially when this response will create greater homeostasis. When any cell receptor in the body is overstimulated due to excessive or chronic use beyond that which supports homeostasis, it down-regulates by decreasing in number or becoming desensitized. This can occur in chronic excessive users of cannabis. People with desensitized endocannabinoid receptors will notice that it takes larger and larger doses of cannabinoids to achieve a desired effect. Fortunately, the endocannabinoid system can be re-set and re-sensitized to the effects of cannabis medicine in less than a week’s time involving only a 48 hour period of abstinence followed by slow reintroduction at the minimal dose required to achieve the desired effect. This re-sensitization results in a more balanced homeostatic response to the cannabis, achieving better results with less medicine. Cannabis dosing has been a question for a long time and it is still continuing to be answered. Since each person’s endocannabinoid system is unique, dosing is based on individual need taking into account the health condition

being addressed, the age and weight of the person being treated, and their overall state of health at the time treatment is initiated. Recommending a form or specific dose of a cannabinoid medicine based on cannabinoid content alone is only the part of the picture. Cannabis also contains terpenoids. The Cannabis plant expresses over 200 different types of terpenoids. Each strain or cultivar (cultivated variety) of cannabis has a terpenoid content that is genetically determined, making the terpenoid profile or composition one way to identify specific strains or cultivars. While the cannabinoid content provides information regarding the strength, potency, and type of variety, the terpenoid content reveals how a specific cannabis strain or cultivar is meant to be used medicinally. For example, d-limonene found in lemon peels, lemongrass, and other citrus fruits is the second most widely distributed terpenoid found in nature. It is used for the treatment of anxiety and depression, as an anti-fungal due to its ability to increase the permeability of cellular membranes, and as a treatment for gastric reflux and other digestive system conditions. Research has shown it also plays an important part in tumor apoptosis or cell death. When beginning treatment with cannabis compounds it is best to start with a low dose of a quality medicine. MYTH: Congressâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Recent Omnibus Bill Changed the Controlled Substances Act Though many believe the recent omnibus bill effectively nullifies the Controlled Substances Act, which makes marijuana a highly illegal Schedule 1 controlled substance, it actually had no effect on that Act. Nonetheless, it does represent a big step by the federal government toward marijuana policy reform and medical marijuana advocates have reason to be optimistic following its passage. The omnibus bill cuts off federal funding to the Department of Justice for enforcing federal marijuana law in states with medical marijuana programs. What this means is that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has no funding to carry out raids or arrests against statelegal medical marijuana businesses. What this also means is that it is more important than ever that you make sure that your business is in full compliance with state law. The bill states, in the pertinent part: None of the funds made available in this Act to the Department

of Justice may be used, with respect to the States of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, [every other medical marijuana state], to prevent such States from implementing their own State laws that authorize the use, distribution, possession, or cultivation of medical marijuana. This bill is likely to be particularly important to those involved with medical cannabis in states like California that lack a well-regulated system. Previously, the DEA has targeted states (like California) without robust regulatory schemes for enforcement. Without enforcement funding, we expect this will no longer be the case. Due to the fact this is an annual spending bill, it does not change the Controlled Substances Act or any other federal law. The fact that it will be up for renewal or modification again next year also means that it is subject to change when Congress passes the next omnibus bill. However, for the time being, it is a big step in the right direction.
