GENETICS The genetics of Sherbert were long confidential. Contracts obligated those associated with the legendary Cookie Fam to keep hush about the parentage. Many people thought they knew, but when the genetics were finally released, those same people were shocked and proven wrong. So what are the genetics? Ask Jigga...

EFFECTS

The deep purple swellings of bud, with green and white blotches, were seemingly painted on the leaves by a master artist, only to be sprinkled liberally with sticky trichomes and that shiny glitter that follows a fairy as they gleefully fly around in a faraway land. Pure… sexiness.

Ahhh…This scent. The smell is floral and sweet, lavender and heaven combined. More than that, well, if this smell was made into a perfume used by Penny Marshall, I’d probably hit it. More? I found myself sneaking huffs from the plastic container like a real drug addict. I nearly kissed it.

I grabbed a clean, powerful bubbler to begin my testing regimen. The first rip blessed me by drifting a clear, botanical-flavored smoke over my eager tongue. I quivered a bit inside. In a good way. Rarely can a meal inspire such horripilation and butterflies, but this flavor was unique and nearly perfect in every regard.

Clocking it at over 25 percent THC, this is one of the most powerful strains you will ever encounter. The majesty and blissfulness of the high is incomparable. It’s contention, Valium you could say, in the form of a plant. Some users fell asleep shortly after consumption, others kept their eyes open and smiled wide.

MACARONS Rain City’s Meringue Masterpiece WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CONDON JR. PHOTO BY ALLIE BECKETT Look at the biscuits on that one. See it…over there in the yellow and purple. Beautiful isn’t she? I bet she tastes like a French treat in the late summer. I want to grab a coffee with her. I’d expatriate this moment for a taste of that soft, sweet morsel. Mmmm…I’m talking of course of the delectable looking cannabis-filled confections “sexifying” the shelves at Rain City Medical. The flavorful edible to flawlessly compliment your mocha or espresso shots. What did you think I was talking about? It’s the Macarons (not Macaroons) that will set your summer afire. An indulgence with no equal. Macarons, a whipped, meringue based snack, are rare in the medible world, but why? They taste like the sweat of heaven and these laced ones are medicated to perfection. I gobbled a lemon macaron, just one of the two-pack, and waited for a ferry. Upon entering the ferry I began to feel the power. Epiphanies

began bouncing around my cranium, exploding like creative and mental orgasms. After an hour of ingenious thoughts being formed, I felt a wee bit tired and delightfully drained. I then slumbered rapaciously and awoke the next morning very well-rested. These macarons can accomplish unwinding we need after a long day of work and still keep us intelligent and mindful. A rare combination not associated with “stoners” by non-using squares. Flavors available include Lemon and the purply-deliciousness Passion Fruit. One of each came in the package I received. They were equally scrumptious. Rain City is open all the time, seriously ALL the time, and whenever you need powerful medication that will simultaneously tickle your taste buds, be sure to stop by and pick up a few Macarons. You won’t soon forget the experience.

DAWG STAR A Light In The Sky

WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CONDON JR. PHOTS BY ALLIE BECKETT Initiative 502 and all the excitement of legalized cannabis is starting to bubble in the state of Washington. A draft-like lottery has taken place. Awarding possible excited owners of storefronts with a number (the lower the better) to know that they are part of an elite group of establishments chomping down in anticipation to sell cannabis to anyone with a valid ID over the age of 21. The state’s Liquor control Board are monitoring these establishments closely and choosing only the finest to sell their product. But how will they get their ever so delicious product? Thus far only a single grow license has been released. While many other would-be legal pot growers are pining for the next available slot. Warehouses are filling up with high-powered equipment, ready to serve the hungry

22

consumers. While noticeably behind Colorado in implementation, the beginning of a new era of history is certainly afoot. During the industrial revolution, warehouses were evidence of economic growth and expansion. Physical and structural proof that times were a-changing. Production and manufacturing at its most efficient. With tall smokestacks and buildings of power. The transition from small, handcreated manufacturing to high-level, mass manufacturing for the betterment of our nation. Steam engines and coal powered equipment did the job of hundreds of workers while still maintaining a decent employment rate. While early warehouses were fraught with labor concerns, these days that isn’t so much an issue. Recently many warehouses

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

in Seattle were being abandoned, too many buildings too little businesses. That is until pot was legalized. Those recently empty warehouses are now being reclaimed, systematically, by growers in the cannabis industry. The high ceilings and open space are perfect locations for legal, no longer under the radar, growing operations. From closet grows and unfinished basements to the big time. To the industrial revolution of cannabis. To the future. The new occupants of these empty warehouses are excited and hopeful, while consumers are salivating at the potential. Some people assume 502 stores will be understocked when they open. That may be, but many companies are looking to make sure it doesn’t always stay that way. One such company is Dawg Star.

Dawg Star began in 2012, as a medically licensed grow operation, with a group of friends and marijuana loving businessmen that came together to produce the product they love so dearly. Well-versed in business, cannabis cultivation, electricity and lighting, these friends recently purchased a warehouse and are currently in the process of building it out perfectly up to code with city and state regulation. A magnificent structure, properly zoned, of course. Currently they have 9 employees, but as the demand and the sales rise, they plan on expanding their personnel and reach. The high ceilings allow for nearly 200 lights once the vertical growing is fully implemented. The fully automated lighting, humidity and CO2 are being set up along with

24

an $80,000 HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. Truly magnificent and daring. The warehouse also hosts over 6,000 square feet of space and a large loft they intend to use as the drying room. Also hosting a safe room and a quality control room. They are most concerned with a quality cannabis product. Once everything is up and running, the folks at Dawg Star are expecting to crop once a week until the sun explodes. This place is the definition of high-tech. An extra 50k was spent on the most advanced electrical components and an organic ebb and flow system to harness the full capabilities of the primary strains they plan on producing which they are keeping to a minimum in order to perfect each one and increase the availability of the strains around the state. 502ers can also

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

expect a few seasonal strain offerings, similar to Samuel Adams beer company. Once the final approval from the LCB is handed down to Dawg Star, expect to see their name and high quality products on the shelves at the State-run recreational shops. When the growing licenses are fully distributed to well-maintained and up-to-date operations, the industry will begin to flourish and expand as quickly as the Egyptian empire which worshipped the “dog star. A growth of positivity and enlightenment. The doors of recreational pot retail shops are opening soon. Convince your local retail outlet to carry Dawg Star products.

Rebelution Rebels With A Cause

WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CONDON JR. PHOTOS BY JASON SIEGEL

In a decade of making music, the Reggae inspired band, Rebelution, has accumulated a loyal and diehard fan base due to their unrelenting positivity and relaxed musical vibes. The band is busy touring the nation this summer to promote their new album, “Count Me In”, dropping on June 10th, but had some time to talk with us at DOPE Magazine about music, cannabis and life as Reggae superstars.

26

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

When did Rebelution first form and what does your music represent to you? Eric: “We got together in Santa Barbara in 2004. It’s such a college town with tons of people on the streets on Friday and Saturday nights. We would just play cover songs and then ultimately started writing original tunes. One thing lead to another and we started playing downtown then all over the state and outside the state. One of our songs became a big hit in Hawaii. It just spread by word of mouth and social media. MySpace was this big thing at the time, it really helped us out. People could just go online and listen to our music. As far as what the music means to me, I just think it’s a positive movement that we are a part of. It’s not just amongst ourselves it’s amongst the fans. The relationship between us and the listeners. It’s just a positive movement all together.

guy was on stage singing amazing melodies and positive lyrics. I realized that if I’m going to make music I want to do the same thing. I want to uplift people the same way Reggae music uplifted me. It’s really important to me.” Marley: “Everyone gets challenged every day to some degree. Some harder than others, some less than others. It’s important for the human spirit. We need to influence each other and pick each other up all the time. We want to keep on trying to improve all the time and you can’t improve, the system and everything, without encouraging each other and inspiring each other. We need to always get better.” What are some of your musical inspirations? Marley: “It sounds cliché but you definitely have to put Bob Marley in there. Some argue he’s a prophet, you know, and I believe that. His lyrics still apply to things today even though he passed away so long ago, and made

important to you guys? Eric: “It’s important for us to be on the creative side of things. Once you sign with a big label they want to bring in producers, they want to own the music, you know, they want to call the shots. Rebelution has always called the shots. We’ve always done everything ourselves. I really like being a part of the music, I like creating the music, I like recording the music, I like choosing the people we work with and I like to be there when it’s mixed and mastered. I just like being there for the whole process. It makes me feel more in touch with the music that we’re putting out for the people. I think, ultimately, it’s a more honest expression of our creativity when we’re a part of that entire process.” Rory: “We really want to do stuff the way we like to do it. Having out own label, 87 Music, allows us to reach our full creative potential

“Cannabis can make you get into music more, make you think about the lyrics more. Music is a very, very powerful catalyst for making a difference.” Rory: “The idea was also that we all loved reggae and we wondered why there wasn’t enough reggae bands out here.” Marley : “Our music represents inspiration. We’ve all listened to and are inspired by Reggae music. It’s one of those sounds that are very unifying. We just wanted to be a part of it. It’s a great feeling to try and inspire each other. It’s what this world needs. Constantly.” Your music is laced with positive vibes and positive lyrics. Tell me why that’s important for you and your fans… Rory: “I feel like there’s a lot of music out there that doesn’t have a message or doesn’t say anything positive. Most pop music even lacks a good message, it’s just party music or straight bad stuff for people to hear about. A lot of that music I like and it’s catchy but it’s important to us to have fun music that you can party to or relax to and still says something good and positive. It leaves the listener with a new idea or a new way of looking at things. It’s for all races, all genders, all types of people throughout the world. That’s what drew me to reggae was just that whole one love, ‘one world’ kind of vibe. It’s showing people that positive music can still be cool. It’s more than just a music it’s a lifestyle.” Eric: “It’s important because of the way I got into music. Particularly Reggae music. I went to this show by Don Carlos and I just fell in love with the lyrics and positive music. It just hit me. I was on the dance floor and this

music so long ago. Personally, from a musical standpoint, not necessarily lyrically charged but Dr. Dre, I think is an amazing producer. The way he puts together his highs, lows and mids is genius. You can’t not want to dance to it. He came up with a formula that make people move. To make people move is one thing but to make them move mentally and physically, that’s what we’re trying to do. We try to make songs that make people dance and think at the same time. Trying to find that perfect mixture is always hard, you know to strive for that is half the battle.” Rory: “Growing up I was really into alternative rock; Nirvana, Alice in Chains, that kind of stuff. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, you know, a lot of the MTV stuff I grew up on in California. For Reggae stuff, Bob Marley is probably my favorite.” Eric: “Definitely Don Carlos as far as reggae inspirations. As far as guitar playing, I really got into Dave Matthews for a long time. Something about his acoustic guitar playing really resonated with me. I like the percussive way that he plays guitar. Probably my biggest influence is world music. I grew up in a household with lots of world music played particularly a lot of music from the Middle East. I just love the vocalists in that region of the world. The things they do with their voices is just spectacular to me.” You have the rare opportunity to release your music independently. Why is that

without a record label or producers coming in saying how they think it should sound. This album is mostly just us. We didn’t bring anybody in like we did on the last album. We just wanted to go back to the roots and jamming. We want to own our own music and have control of that.” Marley: “We control our music as far as how we write. We make our own artwork. We like to have the artistic control and being independent is all about that. There’s so many things happening technologically, there’s a lot of advancements and if you want to be independent it’s not as hard as it used to be. You control your own destiny, if you like that, be independent. If you like people making decisions for you, then don’t be independent. We grew this thing called Rebelution from the seed up and I don’t think anybody really wants to let it go.” What kind of role does cannabis play in your life? What kind of role does it play in your music? Marley: “Well it’s a huge part of my life, it’s actually part of my culture where I grew up, in Mendocino County. Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity; the Emerald Triangle. I was born in a house without electricity or indoor plumbing. The house was built from redwood trees off of our own properties. You could say it was ingrained in my life and it’s done things for me in so many different ways. Where I come from that’s what people do to survive. It’s not taking

the easy way out there’s just not a lot of jobs in the middle of the woods. I don’t know if I would be here doing Rebelution, or if any of us would be here doing it. Using herb as a mental weapon. For me, I always use the analogy of a seven iron. For people that don’t golf, the seven iron is the most versatile club. That’s what cannabis is. It’s the seven iron of hemp. You can use it for so many things. I would say that it’s been an instrumental part, no pun intended, for Rebelution. All the way, 360 degrees, across the board.” Rory: “Cannabis is definitely a big part of my life. As for music it can inspire me and reach new creative outlets. Not that those aren’t available anyway but you might hear something differently or want to play something differently. It really sparks that creativity. Cannabis has never killed anybody ever. It’s a total medicinal plant that helps the people. Having it available will really change people’s lives. That’s why we sing about it and promote it. We want to spread that consciousness of it.” Eric: “I grew up thinking cannabis was a drug and it was forbidden. It wasn’t until I started listening to Reggae music that I understood what they were talking about when they were speaking about cannabis. They were saying that when you get high you go to a higher level of consciousness and I really found that to be true with my own personal experience with cannabis. To the Rastas, cannabis is a spiritual plant, it’s a medicinal plant and I just found that to be true. Although I’m not a religious person at all, I was a religious studies major in college, I respect every religion, every culture and I really identified with the fact that cannabis is a spiritual tool for them. As far as my role in Rebelution, I feel that I’m just trying to educate people about it. I don’t really see myself as a political leader in this movement, I just want people to see there’s another side to the story. We all have grown up thinking pot is like a ‘drug’ but there’s a lot more to the story than that.” How do you feel about the cannabis legalization movement currently and where do you see it going from here? Eric: “I’m really proud of Colorado and Washington for what they’ve done. When Rebelution started 10 years ago there was no way over half the population would want to legalize marijuana for recreational use. In that regard I feel very proud of what we’re doing. I hope to see it legalized completely in my lifetime. I think it’s a step in the right direction.” Rory: “It’s been good watching it progress. A lot of states have gone the medical route or decriminalizing. The government will make tons of money off of the taxes on it and probably in 10 years it won’t be a big deal.” Marley: “In the big picture, I think if people

28

get out of their shells who think it’s a hardcore illegal drug and those people who feel that they can do it without breaking the law, it’s going to make this world a better place, no doubt. It’s going to make people calm. People will start using it for a thousand different other purposes. It’s an alternative that’s untapped. From health, to protein, rope, paper, fuel…it’s amazing. It’s definitely not good for some people. Some people could lose their jobs. Big picture: it being legalized is going to make this world a better place and that’s what it’s all about.” When and where was the first time you tried cannabis? How did it change your perspective? Rory: “I was growing up in San Diego in high school when I was 16. My friends were really into Reggae, the guys that I first smoked with, and they showed me this different Reggae stuff. That really changed my perspective and all the bad things I heard about it through the D.A.R.E. program, really wasn’t true.” Eric: “I was probably 14, once I got to high school I tried it. I can’t really remember what it did to me the first time. Probably the biggest benefit for me is I don’t feel as distracted by the things around me. When I utilize cannabis it makes me focus on what I really need to be doing and how I really need to be taking care of myself. It reminds me to drink water, you know.” Marley: “It didn’t change my perspective much because I was 8 years old. It was around us as little kids and we thought it was fun. We didn’t know what we were doing. I think the first time I smoked I was in Baja and I remember taking a puff and I started eating chips but I wasn’t swallowing the chips. Then I noticed I had all these chips in my mouth like a chipmunk and I started laughing at nothing. I had all these chips coming out of my mouth, my family and friends were around. Then I started walking off into the desert when all of a sudden I saw the top of my head looking down. Out of body experience there. It’s a powerful thing and it’s a spiritual thing. It’s a social thing, it bring people together. It’s brain food. It’s a medicine

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

in different ways, physically and spiritually.” How do you believe the combination of cannabis and positive music influence the world? Eric: “I think it’s a positive plant. You look at the uses of cannabis and there’s new scientific research being done every day that shows the benefits of cannabis. I think it’s an amazing plant that’s been outlawed for years, for no reason at all. I discovered that through reggae music. A positive plant mixed in with positive music. It’s no wonder why they go together so well.” Marley: “Those are two powerful weapons. Cannabis can make you get into music more, make you think about the lyrics more. Music is a very, very powerful catalyst for making a difference. It’s one of the last sacred things that we have that can rally the people together and maybe change things. When you add such a strong substance in terms of what it can do for people and when you team those up it’s a really good combination.” Rory: “When you use cannabis it makes you want to relax and think more. The opposite of alcohol where it makes you rowdy and more aggressive, for some people. Cannabis, when you use it, you don’t really want to fight people or get aggressive. That is a positive thing too. You can relax and listen to the positive words of Reggae and it can really change your life. It’s really how I live my life. Everyone’s going to have a bad day but you can’t have a good day unless you know a bad day is. You can’t have good without the bad. It doesn’t work for everyone but it’s one of those things that can really help the world and the people. There’s fights at our shows here and there but I doubt it’s from them getting high off weed. Those are the ones that are usually drinking a lot. Cannabis awareness is a more healthy environment for people.”

S Y A T S S I B A N N A C G N HOW LO IN YOUR BLOODSTREAM RELATED

TO INTOXICATION AND DUID LAWS Written by Heath Laslo

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

HEALTH

Last month’s edition of DOPE Magazine discussed the synergy between using cannabis and alcohol together. What we found is that using the two drugs together, or what is commonly referred to as being “cross-faded,” resulted in THC blood levels doubling when a relatively small amount of cannabis is smoked with an average amount of alcohol (two one-and-a-halfounce shots, two six-ounce glasses of wine or two 12-ounce beers). This month we are going to delve deeper

two with dinner and determine if you are safe to drive, based on the number of drinks consumed and time that has elapsed. If we make this same analogy with regards to Washington’s new DUID laws for cannabis, if you are caught operating a motor vehicle with levels of THC in your blood of over five nanograms per milliliter (five ng/mL), you will be up a creek without a paddle. Unfortunately Washington State’s new DUID law for cannabis doesn’t take into account whether five ng/mL of THC in your

the risk for sober drivers when a marijuana user’s THC concentrations in whole blood reach five to 10 ng/mL. However, this does not mean all drivers will be impaired when they have that concentration of THC in their blood of over 5 ng/mL. MMJ patients’ blood can contain detectable amounts of THC long after they last used cannabis, leading some experts to caution that heavy use results in “cannabis concentrations in sober phases that resemble concentrations found in

“In general, THC only remains detectable in the blood for a few hours when smoked or vaporized, however low residual levels may be detected in chronic smokers for up to 12 to 24plus hours if more sensitive technology is used.” into how long cannabis stays in your blood, as it relates to our new DUID laws in WA State and considerations for Oregon. We are not discussing urinalysis for cannabis, which is typically done in the workplace, since blood tests, unlike urinalysis, detect the presence of THC in the blood at a specific time. Urinalysis detects the inactive metabolite THC-COOH that is fat soluble and may remain detectable in urine for days to a month(s) for frequent users like medical marijuana (MMJ) patients. We all know that with DUI laws in Washington and Oregon, an adult driver over the age of 21 may be charged with DUI if the results of a breath or blood test show the amount of alcohol in the driver’s blood and/or plasma to be .08 percent or higher. Additionally throughout the years we have been taught that our livers can metabolize alcohol (clear our blood) at a rate of roughly a 12-ounce beer, a six-ounce glass of wine or a one-and-a-half-ounce shot of alcohol per hour. This information gives us a rough idea of how to responsibly have a drink or

blood equals intoxication, especially for MMJ patients. In a drug-naïve patient (never consumed cannabis), they will likely be intoxicated and should consider a taxi. However for a medical marijuana (MMJ) patient who consumes cannabis daily, this indiscriminate threshold doesn’t accurately measure or portray a person’s level of intoxication. So how long does it take for our liver to clear the cannabis from our bloodstreams and be under the legal threshold? In general, THC only remains detectable in the blood for a few hours when smoked or vaporized, however low residual levels may be detected in chronic smokers for up to 12 to 24-plus hours if more sensitive technology is used. The most meaningful recent study measuring driver “culpability” (i.e., who is at fault) in 3,400 crashes over a 10–year period indicated that drivers with THC concentrations of less than five ng/mL in their blood have a crash risk no higher than that of drivers without any THC in their bodies. The crash risk begins to rise above

occasional users after acute cannabis use.” In one controlled study, six of 25 participants tested positive for THC a full seven days after abstention, with the highest concentration detected being three ng/mL of whole blood. I am not proposing in any way that you use cannabis and/or alcohol and drive. However, the reality is that you may find yourself in one of these situations, faced with the decision of whether to get behind the wheel. If you do get behind that wheel, you should be aware of the time it will take for your liver to metabolize the cannabis and/or alcohol so you can safely make it home. As always, here at DOPE we want to provide you with the latest information to make safe and informed decisions with regards to cannabis consumption. This next month we will look at the process of taking a tolerance break so when you smoke, vape, dab etc., it will feel like the first time you got to know this precious medicinal plant.

SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS

WHEN MOVIES MEET MEDICATION WRITTEN BY MICHAEL CONDON JR.

Smell the summer? Of course not. We live in the Northwest. But a spattering of 60-plus degree days can bring out the flip-flops and spaghetti straps faster than an over-caffeinated department store clerk. But somewhere a little south of us, Hollywood it’s proudly called, the summer movie experience is starting to rev its annual engine. The sprawling epicenter of entertainment is loading the bullets of filmdom with the hopes of cashing in on your hard-earned green. Speaking of green… How should you take in the onslaught of motion pictures in terms of medication? Well, my adorable novice friend, that’s all dependent on your film of choice. 34

“22 Jump Street” in theaters June 13 “Jersey Boys” in theaters June 20 Yes, the remarkable Jonah Hill has survived the devil’s phallus from “This Is The End” and managed to team back up with the Neolithicinspired head known as Channing Tatum. Expect the same giggly humor, dick jokes and other brotherhood bonding experiences…and probably something about weed. To enhance the nuances of this film and to fully experience the joy of belly laughs, you shouldn’t puff a heavy-hitting indica. A better cannabis companion for this movie would be a joint rolled with an awakening Sour Diesel flower and a sprinkling of decent, old school hash.

In Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial offering, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons dramatically unfolds as history has already determined. This movie will likely have you laughing like you’re in church after one scene, to crying like a spayed puppy in just a few frames. You might need something to keep you more neutral and minimize the emotional dynamics. A tear and a chuckle every now and then can be achieved by downing a moderately dosed edible and bringing a discreet vape pen to keep the film active.

Best paired with a LIGHT edible and a few pulls from the pen.

Best paired with a Sour D joint and hash.

“Sex Tape” in theaters July 25 Oh Cameron Diaz! First you rub Ben Stiller’s jism in your hair, now you’re making a sex tape with a slim-looking Jason Segal? Then promptly leaving it in a wireless Cloud for the world to witness? The combined awkwardness of Diaz and Segal ought to create some uncomfortable situations for viewers. This anxiety can be eased by combining a few edible gummies and a small bag of Berry White. Bring your sneak-a-toke pipe to steal a few hits, while Jason Segal makes adorably baffled facial expressions or when Cameron Diaz falls to the ground inelegantly.

Best paired with THC-laced gummies and occasional pipe puffs.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” in theaters August 8 The sewer-skating, pizza-pummeling heroes in a half shell are back in yet another dimly lit adventure. This time, April O’Neil is played by the distracting Megan Fox and the movie’s directed by the guy who did “Battle Los Angeles.” Michael Bay attached his name as producer, so expect maximum explosions and minimal banter. Pull the old TMNT bedspread out of retirement, and bundle and enjoy this movie at a drive-in theater with a date. Don’t forget the bubbler and a bag of fine Purple Kush and float back to your childhood.

Best paired with a water pipe, Purple Kush and a friend.

WHAT’S INSIDE

Remember the old bar on 2nd Ave called JuJu? Well now it’s defunct and in its place resides Belltown’s only community garden/lounge combo. An enjoyable hangout location for cannabis friendly Seattlites and visitors alike with their eyes on a 502 retail prize. And why not? The knowledge of the industry is ripe within, originally a cannabis publication (with original printings available at the lounge), PDA has watched the medical industry grow throughout the years. The lounge has rolling papers for sale, books to read and a celebrity autographed wall. Raekwon’s was noticed. There’s no smoking allowed in the lounge, yet, but vaping is allowed and encouraged. It’s a selfproclaimed “cannabis library” as wel. Oh, and there’s free WiFi. The lounge is only the half of it. The door labeled Belltown Community Gardens is another exciting adventure all its own. Within the door is a quaint but stuffed access point with entertainingly labeled, color coded cannabis products. New strains are always popping up on the shelves to keep patients on their toes and smaller amounts to assure the freshest product available. Check out the black label strains which are exclusive from the growers. Personally I enjoyed the Panama Red with its 22% THC and late come on. The Cherry Pie and ATF are some fan favorite strains. Edibles displayed like a candy store full of enticing treats and a variety of BHO for the dabbers among us. With many 502 retailers lacking knowledge and only trying to jump into the business to make ends, it’s refreshing to see a few shops with retail hopes still dedicated to helping people and furthering marijuana education. Although the Liquor Control Board isn’t selecting retail outlets on merit, if they were, the PDA Lounge should be high up on the list.

WHAT’S INSIDE

Snohomish County’s largest city is home to a few choice collectives. One of the first in the county. None of which seem to compare to the cleverly named HypeHerbally. Get it? Delightful word games aside, this dispensary is of the highest quality. Upon and within the display cases are jars full of perfected cannabis and shelves full of every THC product to be released in the state. HypeHerbally has been in its current location for almost a year now after a rezoning problem at their first location. A party, with a farmers market feel, will be held at the collective on July 27th to celebrate. Patients from all over are welcome to attend the festivities. HypeHerbally has the needs of smokers down. Their potent and aptly named Garlic Breath strain was a highlight as was the slab of concentrate made from the same plant. A rare genetic and a positive outlook. Along with the heavy hitting indica Black Domino and a beautiful Master Kush, which they always try to keep in stock. For the concentrate consumers, expect to see a wide variety of oils and waxes to take you to the moon and back. In-house edible brand “Ol’ Fashion” has many delicious products including a healthy chunk of banana bread and cookie dough. All made with love and, of course, THC. Also available are Hashy Headquarters Coco Caps and coffee mixings for when you need energy and a buzz. The north end is starting to catch up to Seattle in terms of medical cannabis and nowhere is that more evident than at HypeHerbally. Complete with a competent staff and friendly demeanor. Other collectives have in the area have been trailing behind HypeHerbally in many ways. If you don’t find what you’re looking for here…you won’t find it anywhere, Captain.

TEXTURE Dissimilar to your typical concentrate, the Jelly Hash from Lucky LadyZ is crumbly, like dirt. No sticky fingers or syrupy mess like some more viscous concentrates. The Jelly Hash is more consistent with your typical, brick hash. Perfect for rolling in with flower for joints, blunts or bowls. Not recommended for dabbing.

MEDICAL BENEFITS Looking for longlasting pain relief? A dab will hit you quickly and certainly do the job albeit temporarily. Flower will last a little longer, that’s most certain. But for those of you that want longevity in your pain relief, do a J of your favorite strain and some Jelly Hash. Hours (plural) of relief.

LOOKS

EFFECTS

Earthy in color and density. It’s difficult to notice that it’s made from compressed keif and Iso concentrate. Not a pure hash, it’s more loose than that. Not a concentrate, in the traditional sense, it’s too solid for that. No…This Jelly Hash it’s an entity all its own.

It smells very similar to how it tastes. The flavor of the hash’s smoke compliments the deep, cannabis aroma nicely. No chemical overtone, due to both the keif coating and the Iso concentrate. As clean as a concentrate can smell. Smells good enough to eat…but don’t.

The taste is distinct and smooth. A slight tickle in the throat is to be expected. No residual butane in the smoke. It tastes as pure as mountain spring water, if the spring water was run through rocks of Hash and lots of green, green marijuana.

The Jelly Hash is less damning than a powerful dab hit and much more manageable for concentrate newbies. When spread across a bed of flowers the effects are, as previously mentioned, longlasting but also more potent than cannabis alone. Perfect for movie nights with a loved one.

POT AROUND THE WORLD NFL Lightens Up On Pot The NFL is considering lowering the punishment for cannabis and raising the threshold to trigger a positive drug test. As of this writing the agreement hasn’t been officially declared by the commissioner. This will not affect current suspensions or positive tests. Sorry Josh Gordon. The current positive limit for the NFL is 15 ng/mL, which falls below the World Anti-Doping Agency standard used for the Olympics (19 ng/mL). It is also reported that the NFL Players Association wants the NFL to look into the medical benefits of marijuana has a relief to players both physically and mentally. Currently, the NFL doesn’t test for alcohol. As cannabis is beginning to be sold like alcohol in two cities hosting NFL teams, it’s time for them to stop testing completely.

Canadian Recall

A recall of medical marijuana, a Purple Kush strain, was issued by the federal health agency, Health Canada. This is believed to be the first time a federal agency recalled a batch of medicinal cannabis. The agency wouldn’t get into the gritty details, only stating officially that they had, “issues with the company’s production practices.” The producer of the Purple Kush, Greenleaf Medicinals, has instructed patients to discontinue any use of the product but also assures them they are in no immediate danger. A well regulated system with health in mind.

Minnesota MMJ? Sort of…

Minnesota is in position to become the 22nd state to legalize medical marijuana. Though there are a few differences. For one, you can’t get marijuana. Patients suffering from cancer, glaucoma, HIV/ AIDS, Tourette Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, ALS and seizures can get concentrated whole plant extracts… no dried plant matter…in pill or oil form. With smoking of the cannabis buds prohibited, many patients are not satisfied with this Governor Dayton backed bill and want it adjusted in the near future. It is a positive step forward, that is undeniable, but concentrated oils and capsules are not for every patient. Minnesota legalization associations are continuing to press on.

GROW Have you ever wanted to play God? Smiting pests and raising your own botanical species isn’t just folklore, it’s real when you grow your fine medical cannabis in a greenhouse. Greenhouses and greenhouse building companies are jumping out of couch cushions trying to get a piece of that cannabis industry pie to feed their families. It’s no wonder, the hybrid of outdoor savings and indoor control are tempting to many growers. To truly understand the benefits of a well-controlled patch of land, we asked God himself/herself (I believe it can shape-shift) some questions about watching over plants and the, only occasionally dangerous, effects of a greenhouse. Michael- “Hey God. How are you on

some fresh air. Fresh air not available in all locations.” M- “Right, and with the legalization of cannabis…” G- “Finally! Am I right? Am I right? I put it on Earth to give you a potent medicine and you make it illegal? Shouldn’t have given you morons free will.” M- “Silly, I know. As I was saying, with the legalization of cannabis we no longer have to grow the plant indoors. We only began growing it inside to conceal our activities from authorities. What are some disadvantages to greenhouse growing?” G- “None really. Hydroponic systems can be easily installed, for people that prefer that route, along with clever irrigation techniques so watering isn’t

authorities or nosey neighbors?” G- “Absolutely. I use the sky, but for your greenhouses I would recommend using slightly shaded plastic or glass depending on how fancy you made your little world. Mixing in some other plants that can thrive from greenhouse growing will also help shield your intentions. Good question.” M- “With the overuse of the world’s resources and destruction of everything sacred on this planet by humans, make your plea for a complete conversion to greenhouse growing.” G- “Many companies are starting to build immense, well-constructed greenhouses to use on a massive scale in lieu of wasteful indoor warehouses for marijuana growing. “Many companies are starting to build immense, well-constructed greenhouses to use on a massive scale in lieu of wasteful indoor warehouses for marijuana growing. These should become the standard as cannabis is becoming more and more acceptable and accessible. “ this blessed day? May I call you God?” God- “Or Goddess, Allah, Jah, Elohim, Jehovah. It’s your choice really, I’m not terribly picky.” M- “Cool. So I telephoned you today to talk a bit about growing cannabis in an environmentally controlled space of land. In terms of the micro, we call them greenhouses, in the macro, I suppose you’d call it the planet Earth. You are the unchallenged leader of outdoor, controlled growing. Let’s start with the benefits of greenhouses.” G“Yeah man. Greenhouses are awesome. For you children, greenhouses can save you a lot of dough on electricity bills, seeing as the Sun I created can provide better light, and for free, than those trifling, wasteful bulbs you guys made. Also, the covering of greenhouses allows for better pest protection. Toss in some ladybugs, they eat mites. I might be concerned about a little mold but that can be alleviated with

an issue. Sometimes a greenhouse can get too warm, but well-placed vents or the occasional opening of windows can help alleviate that concern. Besides a higher humidity can benefit your plants by slowing the evaporation rate of soil and plants with the moist air. I’ve been growing in a controlled environment for many millennia. Occasionally you have to mistreat your plants a bit to get the best character out of them. Something too well-controlled will leave the plants soft and weakened. Just like people, really. A little unforeseen damage causes stronger, more trichome packed cannabis plants. Toss a few tomato seeds in the garden and you are a growing master.” M- “Great advice, thanks G-man.” G- “Okay, don’t call me that.” M- “Got it. Next question, since cannabis is a highly sought after plant, are there ways to help conceal the intention of your greenhouse from

become the standard as cannabis is becoming more and more acceptable and accessible. The savings on the energy costs alone, for most large scale warehouses, can be used to make a greenhouse and the savings can then be passed on to the consumer without a greenthumb. Greenhouses are a clever way to keep the heat engulfing your plants while reaping the benefits of outdoor growing and the benefits of indoor growing without the mess and damage to the ecosystem. Start growing in a greenhouse today.” M-“Thanks God.” G- “Once again, you’re welcome, my child.”

ROAD TRIP: ALBANY’S CANNA KITCHEN Albany, Oregon WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHARON LETTS In an industrial part of town 50 miles south of Portland, Albany’s Canna Kitchen has created a niche in the world of cannabis businesses. Not a collective, but a kitchen where smokeless remedies are made by mom and daughter Rhea Graham and Kendra Ludahl, respectively. Rhea’s mother is also a card-carrying medical cannabis patient and supports the family business wholeheartedly, getting relief for her own arthritis and more. “Patients bring us their plant material and we make smokeless remedies from it,” coowner, Rhea Graham explained. “We aren’t a dispensary, we are a kitchen. We are medicine makers in the true sense.” The operation hosts an extensive menu,

60

with more than 40 options ranging from food stuffs to tinctures, to capsules - with its newest addition of suppositories, the latest delivery method on the market. “The suppositories are our biggest seller right now - right behind capsules and super salve,” Graham said. “Using a ‘CannaSupp’ to dose is the best way to treat many ailments – most especially prostate cancer, according to a doctor who has referred many patients to us.” Suppositories are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream via the anal canal walls and, according to Graham, the port vein carries the cannabinoids directly to the liver – not for processing, but to heal.

Defining the Undefined Oregon has allowed caregivers to grow and support a number of patients since 55 percent of voters passed Measure 67 in November of 1998, removing state-level criminal penalties on cultivation, use and possession with a doctor’s recommendation. Lacking within the state have been retail outlets for safe access, keeping Oregon’s black market alive and well until recently when voters passed Senate Bill 1531, allowing cities and counties to regulate and enforce its own ordinances on storefronts. With the new retail rules, the kitchen was in a conundrum, as they don’t fit into the typical dispensary model.

ROAD TRIP

“Back in February of this year, I sent a letter to Rep. Andy Olson letting him know I needed a waiver as I was not a dispensary, but they were set on calling me just that,” Graham explained. “He suggested I contact Tom Burns, head of the pharmacy division.” Graham said she didn’t take to chatting with the Oregon Health Authority’s Pharmacy Services department, as they aren’t entirely copasetic to medical cannabis, but she made the call with startling results. “They referred me back to Rep. Olson,” Graham said, reiterating the intern on the phone who had advised the situation was “complicated.” Graham said back in October of 2011, the kitchen received permission from the City of Albany Building and Planning Division to proceed with business as usual, but by February 2014, with the newfound retail rules on the horizon, its City Council contemplated

banning the herb altogether.

Power in Numbers “During our first City Council sit-in, we had 75 supporters there,” Graham shared. “The mayor said she received more than 200 letters requesting we remain open and do business as usual. They were pretty amazed at the support we had.” When cities and counties are left to create ordinances for its medical cannabis cultivation, product production, distribution and use, it’s no small task for the largely uneducated administrators and representatives. Medicine makers are learning about the plant’s healing properties with patients, and patients are educating their doctors. It’s a slow train to Wellsville, to say the least, but when a patient finally realizes this good medicine, they have no other alternative but to become an activist for the plant. “Tom Burns over at Pharmacy Services had directed everyone who applied to be a dispensary to close until getting permission to reopen,” Graham said. “They were still insisting we were a dispensary, expecting us to pay $4,000 to stay open or we ‘wouldn’t have protection’ from the state.” After going through what Graham said was “two months of hell,” with its doors closed and patients left without safe access to their medicine, they were given a reprieve – largely due to the support of the cannabis-educated community.

In the end it was agreed the kitchen wouldn’t need the state’s protection from persecution if it provided remedies to dispensaries, as well as its patients. Although the entire process sounded a bit Mafia-esque, the kitchen could remain in business. “We were instructed that we couldn’t process plant material for patients and grow cannabis at the same location – so we don’t grow any longer,” Graham said. “For whatever reason, we could process our material at the same location and dispense – if we were a dispensary – but you can’t grow and process or grow and dispense. It’s crazy! They just can’t seem to think outside the box.” Another current concern is the extensive testing requirements of plant material and finished product. As it stands, material must be tested prior to being made into medicine, then again after medicine is made. This can be a fiscal hardship for patients and Graham is happy to share that this summer, Rep. Olsen said he’d sit down with her and hammer out legislation removing testing requirements for patients bringing their cannabis to the kitchen for conversion to smokeless remedies – albeit, taking another year to remedy, with patients and the kitchen forced to double test. “The frustration comes with so much backpaddling,” Graham said. “I let them know prior to the bill going into effect the kitchen didn’t fit into their model. Now it will take more time, energy and money to go back and fix it.”

Business as usual In the meantime, the little kitchen that could is back in business. The free marketing they received from being on the front page of the local paper throughout the ordeal has proved beneficial, garnering them a plethora of patients who need this good medicine. “We get new patients now coming in daily,” Graham shared. “We added a clinic once a month to help get the good news out about this medicine and it has really helped a lot of people. We don’t run a “card mill,” our patients are educated about using smokeless cannabis remedies, as well as ingesting the raw plant in smoothies and the like.” The future looks bright in Albany, Oregon, for the time being. Patients are being educated, enlightened and helped by the little kitchen, and they won’t be taking their aprons off anytime soon.

PATIENT OF THE MONTH

MINGUS Stoner Kitty

Story and Photos by Sharon Letts

While dogs are America’s best friend, cats come in at a close second with upwards of 35 to 45 million households supporting laps with feline fur and purrs. 64

DOPEMAGAZINEONLINE.COM

PATIENT OF THE MONTH Domestic animals live close to the ground and as reported in last month’s profile of “Charlie” the Humboldt dog being treated now for bone cancer, their bodies support a biological system similar to humans and are subsequently helped in the same with cannabis. They are also susceptible to human ailments such as cancers (feline leukemia, lymphoma, mammary tumors, and oral cancers), obesity, and diabetes – with Renal (kidney) disease (one in 12 cats will succumb) and simple infections being the most common cause of death in older cats (Americanhumane.org). As detailed in an article from Natural News processed pet foods are a daily hazard containing “meat meal,” cooked down at temperatures between 220 and 270 degrees, allegedly sterilizing the contaminated meat used from a stated plethora of “road kill,” euthanized animals from zoos and animal shelters, and meat classified as “4-D,” or “dead, diseased, disabled and dying.” Author Ann Martin in her book “Food Pets Die For” reveals some 200 tons of animals present to pet food manufacturers per month in Los Angeles alone, with the sodium pentobarbital residue used from euthanasia still in the mix. Residue from this concoction containing fecal material is dried and pulverized into a brown powder then used as an additive to pet foods and livestock feed – with farmers referring to it as “protein concentrates.” Martin states that more than five million tons of processed slaughterhouse leftovers were are used for animal feed in the United States each year.

Fighting Infection

Infections come to animals from many sources. Cuts and puncture wounds from other animals are a common malady, with some developing into an abscess – a large amount of puss below the skin manufactured by the body to help fight infection. According to PetMD.com, wounds should be drained and cleaned with an antiseptic or antibiotic cream, with an antibiotic prescription given. When my own cat, Mingus, presented a month ago with an abscess on her cheek I immediately applied my own homemade cannabis infused coconut salve to the area, with excellent results initially, as the swelling appeared to go down right away. Mingus is a 15 year-old Main Coon mix with an excellent attitude and extremely smart. Due to her age I was concerned the abscess wasn’t opening up and draining on its own. And I’m not a homesteader, per se, so draining it on my own was not an option. A trip to the Vet proved positive, as the good doctor honored my medicine. I advised him that

I was administering cannabis oil mixed with an edible coconut infused salve her for pain and infection, as well as applying it to her cheek. He offered ointments and antibiotics, but I passed initially, fully believing in the power of the plant.

Well, not Stoned

The Vet drained the abscess and sent us home. I continued to dose her by putting a small amount on the end of a toothpick and rubbing it on her gums. She was quickly dubbed, “Stoner Kitty.” I typically waited up to an hour after dosing for effect, and then gave more if needed. This is truly an organic and proactive process, as we don’t yet know just how much to dose. There are many who have real issues with dosing their pets with cannabis. The THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is fully activated in both the oil (Rick Simpson Oil) and the coconut salve, and Mingus was obviously affected,

Choosing Traditional Therapies

By the second week most of the fur on her little face had fallen away, with new, healed skin underneath. There was just one area of fur that wouldn’t come off and was oozing, so I took her into the Vet for a follow-up. They cleaned the area and said the fur came away easily, but the spot underneath was a deep wound rife for infection. Though Mingus had shown no fever or swelling since the ordeal began, her age and the extent of the wound caused the Vet to again offer an antibiotic. I explained that cannabis was the best anti-infection medicine around and credited Mingus’ recovery to the plant, but the Vet was adamant and I agreed to a seven-day injection of antibiotics, rather than a 30 day oral dose, as she had been through enough as it is. This was a big deal for me, as cannabis is my only medicine at home. The decision gave me a new-found respect for those who choose traditional therapies along with cannabis, or in lieu of. Facing death is a big deal.

The Road to Wellsville

walking around in circles and generally being loopy. Surprisingly, it didn’t knock her out, as I fully expected her to sleep for days. Instead she was alert, able to hang with the family, and get serious affection and attention. On the one night I didn’t dose her, the next morning was the first morning she didn’t get up to eat and was completely lethargic. After dosing (about 20 minutes or so) she was up and alert and ready to eat; proving the waste away theory just as valid with animals as with humans. Call it munchies if you like; I call it lifesaving, for Mingus was already a bit boney in her old age and frail to handle such a serious infection. Waste away is a serious ailment associated with the AIDS epidemic. In fact, cannabis use became serious in San Francisco in the early 80s, as patients discovered “the munchies” could be lifesaving. Soon it was being used during chemotherapy, as the cancer treatment is known to cause nausea and waste away, with starvation an all-too-real side effect .

Mingus’ face continued to heal after the cleaning and I continued to use both the salve and dose her orally, as the scabbing was stiff and I imagined she felt discomfort moving her jaw to eat – or that’s how it appeared. And that’s the other difficulty with treating our pets – they can’t tell us how they feel, we must go on intuition. While I could not tell what the extent of her pain level was, the Vet said animals tend to shut down when uncomfortable and sleep. Purring promotes healing, but is also a sign of selfsoothing, so I couldn’t be led astray by her purrs – which I had always interpreted as a good thing. Yet each time I dosed her she could eat and was alert, leading me to believe she was comfortable and her appetite was up. Today she continues to heal and the scab area is smaller. There is still concern about how the infection began as we found no wound. There is a possibility it started in her mouth with a bad tooth. Hopefully, the next follow-up visit will prove something. As my cats age I find more reasons to dose them for prevention against cancers and other feline disease. My Calico has regurgitation issues and dosing her regularly helps. I may raise eyebrows for my cannabis use on my pets, but that won’t dissuade me from continuing its use and encouraging others to do the same. For me and my kitties are well with this good medicine, the future looks green – and we aren’t talking cat mint - though, I let them enjoy that treat, as well. Hey, it’s just a plant, right?

For the first time in history, plants have now been cloned from seed.

Researchers from HHMI (Howard Hughes

Flowering plants exhibit the most advanced form of sexual plant reproduction, producing pollen-derived sperm cells that join with egg cells to produce seeds. Each seed, then, is genetically unique. There are several types of asexual reproduction in plants, but all produce the same result: genetically identical daughter plants. Normally, eggs and sperm are haploid -- they have half the number of chromosomes of the parent. The fertilized egg and the adult plant it grows into are diploid -- containing a full complement of chromosomes, half contributed by each parent. Chan and his colleagues focused their work on the laboratory plant Arabidopsis, which has certain genetic mutations that allow it to produce diploid eggs without sexual recombination. These eggs have the same genes and number of chromosomes as their parents. But those eggs cannot be grown into adult plants without fertilization by sperm, which adds another parent’s set of chromosomes. Last year, Chan and UC Davis postdoctoral researcher Maruthachalam Ravi showed that they could breed haploid Arabidopsis plants that carried chromosomes from only one parent. They introduced a genetic change so that after the eggs were fertilized, the chromosomes from one of the parents were eliminated. Such haploid plants would reduce the time needed to breed new varieties. In the new study, Chan’s lab, with colleagues from India and France, crossed these Arabidopsis plants programmed to eliminate a parent’s genes with either of two mutants that can produce diploid eggs.

In about one-third of

the seeds produced, the diploid eggs were successfully fertilized, and then the chromosomes from one parent the ovule of Arabidopsis,” Vielle-Calzada says. “The open question now is, ‘Why?’” His working hypothesis is that squelching the transposons prevents apomixis, but his lab is working to prove the connection. “These results are exciting because they suggest for the first time that transposons could be controlling early development in plants,” he says. Though he has made great progress, Vielle-Calzada is still working toward creating a fully asexual Arabidopsis plant. His current mutants do not develop completely asexual seeds. But by highlighting the role of Argonaute 9 in plant reproduction, Vielle-Calzada has moved a step closer to a slew of agricultural possibilities. “Now we just need to discover how to trigger the second and final step of making sexual plants asexual,” he says. were eliminated, leaving a diploid seed that was a clone of one of its parents. Ravi described the result as a step on the way towards artificial apomixis. The team hopes to produce crop plants, such as lettuce and tomatoes that can fertilize themselves and produce clonal seeds. Applications for provisional patents on the work have been filed. If you have been torn between deciding between clones, seeds, and feminized seeds for your cannabis garden, don’t worry. Science is working hard at finding the ultimate solution, so you don’t have to.

A Nutritional Primer to Better Health 9 Magical Seeds of Life WRITTEN BY HEATH LASLO Plants produce a remarkable object, a tiny embryonic plant covered by a coating with some stored food to provide for its growth…a seed. When you consume seeds, you are gaining all of these stored nutrients for the plants growth. There is a long list of edible seeds that humans have been consuming since the dawn of time, including hemp seeds. In fact, anthropologists believe that prehistoric humans, in their constant search for sustenance, probably collected and ate virtually every seed that didn’t kill them and likely some that did. More recently, the Discovery Channels “Naked and Alive” documentary/reality TV show challenges participants to stay alive for 21 days in inhospitable areas of the world, with nothing other than a knife and a fire starter. As demonstrated, when you get hungry enough, you will consume just about anything found in your environment to stay alive. If you are in search of high quality food, then seeds are what you are looking for. We are going to explore the health

benefits of nine seeds that are widely recognized as having the most benefit to your health when consumed regularly. These seeds include: Hemp, Flax, Sesame, Pomegranate, Fennel, Sunflower, Pumpkin, Chia, and Grape seeds. According to most naturopathic experts, all of the aforementioned seeds are packed full of protein (4 to 9 grams per ounce), low-glycemic carbohydrates (don’t convert to sugars that produce glycemic highs and lows), good fats (Omega’s that are good for cholesterol and your heart), fiber (excellent for consistent bodily functions and organ health), and essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, research has linked certain seeds to health benefits like lower blood pressure as well as protection against cancer and increased bone health. This is also a good time for me to make a plug for the benefits of taking a multivitamin daily. While the aforementioned seeds provide great supplementation to our diets, the average American diet (including myself) needs an additional supplementation in the form of

a daily multivitamin. The multivitamin will fill in the rest of the vitamins and minerals essential for our minds & bodies to function at their optimal capacity. Lastly, if you are like me, I don’t have the time to plan out 3 well-balanced meals a day. Hence, I take a multivitamin and calcium (milk/dairy products have terrible bone absorption). This is similar to how we supplement our bodies with cannabis to supplement and stimulate our endocannabinoid systems. Personally, when I am not taking a high quality, foodbased multivitamin, I can dramatically feel the difference in my health. My overall sense of well-being, mental acuity, and ability to cope with stress and anxiety are greatly enhanced. If you are looking for a great multivitamin to supplement your diet, my personal favorite is New Chapter’s line of multivitamins. They are food-based multivitamins that I can even take on an empty stomach without getting nauseous, a typical side effect of most chemically based multivitamins.

Tabletop Aquaponics System “Introducing the most advanced portable and all-intelligent soilless plant and fish cultivation system. Aquaponics is a system for the sustainable production of herbs and other plants that combines aquaculture (raising of fish) with hydroponics (the cultivation of plants in water with no soil). Aquaponics provides a symbiotic relationship because the plants and fish both benefit from living together. The plant’s roots clean the water of ammonia and toxins, which help the fish - while the fish provide the plants with nutrients, which are obtained from the fish pee and poop, as well as from ammonia excreted from the fish gills. (This fish waste is converted into nitrates by beneficial bacteria in the water and then absorbed through the plant’s roots as organic fertilizer and nutrients.) Please note that it will only be organic if you feed your fish organic fish food and give the plants organic supplemental fertilizer.”

HERBAN MYTHS

HERBAN MYTHS ANSWERED BY

MYTH: DELIVERY SERVICES ARE PERMITTED UNDER OREGON AND WASHINGTON MARIJUANA LAWS. Delivery, who doesn’t love it? It’s fast, simple, and easy. Still, under Oregon’s revised dispensary laws and under I-502, delivery has gone to the dogs; it is illegal under both regimes to deliver marijuana to either patients or customers. Under I-502, age-eligible customers will have to get themselves into physical storefronts and flash I.D. before they can purchase up to an ounce of marijuana. In Oregon, the Oregon Health Authority specifically addresses whether an entity can be a “mobile dispensary,” or whether it can “deliver medicine” under the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program. The response is: “No. Mobile services, including, but not limited to, farmer markets, drive-through, and mobile

dispensaries. Any transfer of marijuana to or from a dispensary must take place at the registered address of the dispensary.” The last vestige of marijuana delivery in the Pacific Northwest region is medical marijuana in Washington State. RCW 69.51A fully contemplates and allows for the transportation of medicine from a collective garden directly to a patient member. Still, with the MMJ recommendations set forth by the Liquor Control Board in December 2013, combined with the legislature’s recent efforts to reform MMJ laws in the Evergreen State, one can only wonder if Washington MMJ delivery will also become a myth in the near future.
