THIS BOOKLET CONTAINS WORKS FROM BUILDING DESIGN STUDIO 1 OF DO QUANG VU FROM 21KTT1 HANOI ARCHITECTURAL UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR EYTAN FICHMAN
INTRODUCTION “The Point is moving toward the Cube. That Point is very confusing. It wondered "What is that Cube made of? glass? wood? or bricks and concrete? Will it break or explode when I crash into it?". The Cube is like a pillow. The Point gradually sinks deeper into the Cube. It is now in the most calm and soothing place it's ever been”. Inspired by this abstract story, I want to create similar feelings (of the points) with people when they walking through architectural space. Following required function of the assignment, I have choose the starting point is the outside world and people will “gradually sinks deeper” in the building and end at the “calm and soothing” Reposing room.

1.0 PAINTING ANALYSIS Finding hidden geometric lines Develop compositions
FINDING HIDEN GEOMETRIC LINES
1. Extend the curves of face’s lines till it touch the painting’s boundary
2. Explore the straight lines till it touch the painting’s boundary
3. Explore the diagonal lines from the parts of the portrait
4. Pixelize the painting to find hiden square grid composition
From these foundation study of hidden geometric lines in the painting, I combined these element together to create the final composition of card
Sketching a valued version and rounded some lines to clarify the relationship between shapes in composition
Form the original composition, I made a set of variants from it, include various style: Line, Shape, Value, Color, Collaging shapes and color
Compressed the composition to square frame
2.0 topography ANALYSIS Sketching the site Building site model Precise plan and section of the site
Selected background composition Pencil on paper 12cm x 12cm
From the selected background composition, I simplify the valued shape in to big shape to create the foundation for the site Focus point of the site is the overhanging square (develop from the “nose” part)
Directly convert the shape of composition to the site
Reverse the site to explore the figure and the background of a topography
Final version of site Foamex modeling 24cm x 24cm
Precise plan and section of the site
3.0 Inhabitable space design Reanalyze the site Sketching the construction’s idea Building site model Precise plan and section of the site
Reanalyze the site
In the assignment, there are 4 main functions: Gathering room, Reading room, Reposing room, Rooftop garden. According to each room requirements, I arrange these spaces in the order of privacy, starting with the most public space – Gathering room, then the Reading room and the most private is the Reposing room
Reanalysing the site to indentify the buildable space for the construction. There are three domain that can be used as building’s foundation and a main space that can be a primary foundation Bubble diagram Sketches
Idea sketching Small size paper
Base on three chosen space, there could be a bridge structure that can connect these three areas together. The curved line in the front is also soon determined as the main line
FREEHAND PLAN IDEA Sketches on transparent paper
Function, circulation And elevation
Reposing room Reading room
Gathering room
Determined the way in of the building and the main curved circulation line inside the construction
Elevation study: trying to interpret the bridge structure in the building
In detailed study of elevation, I came up with 3 different light filter: - Glass filter: Too much light coming in the space and difficult to control - Dot filter, the size of dot change gradually, can cause some visually disturbing. - Square grid filter: can open and close to good landscape view, also can adjust the square size easily to control the light
1st STUDY MODEL Foamex modeling
Reposing
Reading
Gathering
In the first sketch model, I used the glass wall as a light filter system – which is not very effective. These spaces have a clear hierarchy of privacy from gathering to reposing. The construction lie in two chosen area of the site and the building itself is the connection between these two areas
2nd STUDY MODEL Foamex modeling
This second study model focus on the circulation and elevation (but serve for the circulation’s experience). The big wall will contains various size of windows that getting smaller from gathering to reposing. Though the circulation is nearly linear but the light changing gradually, makes every step is a different experience of space
3rd STUDY MODEL
Foamex modeling New scheme
In this new scheme, I changed the entrance of the construction and function (flip side from the first scheme). The main concept, window filter and narrow hall are still the same. The staircase to rooftop garden is near the entrance.

Lightning study in model
Roof plan
Sketches study about the roof structure. Curve line is calculated to hold the soil inside and also act as a sunshade for the building
4th STUDY MODEL Foamex modeling
This design scheme is developed upon the 2nd study model. Keep function, circulation and form the same, making the filter wall more clearly to test the light pattern in the building.
5th STUDY MODEL
Sketches and foamex modeling Roof structure Roof modeling
Reposing room is lie inside the cylinder at the end of the building and surrounding (outside) by the stairs that lead to rooftop garden. The shape and lighting design is inspired by Meditation center of Tadao Ando and the MIT chapel by Eero Saarinen. The slab will have a gap to bring the reflected light of water under the construction. This structure can bring pattern light and also help the ventilation of the room
Plan include function and circulation of the building. This scheme is also a combination of the two previous study scheme (form of 2nd , and function of 1st )
The plan lie in the site
ROOF STRUCTURE
Sketches and foamex modeling The roof is calculated to hold soil in side it, serve for the root of plants in rooftop garden. According to sun angle, the roof is also help regulate the amount of light coming into the construction. Furthermore, the frequency of precipitation can increase the mass of the soil, so the structure needs additional and columns below
Details sketching of the structure and the roof plan
Detail
Study of “butterfly beams” by Alvar Aalto and the structure of boat
The structure is contains primary and supporting system to strengthen the structure. The composition of structure is asymmetrical so the primary structure (main beam) could not stand in the middle
Roof modeling
Foamex, wood and plastic
facade The façade is designed with blank walls, the mass will makes people think the construction is solid and they will “confused” about the characteristic of the building, and then surprised them when they experience an open space inside
6th STUDY MODEL
Simulation model Foamex, paper, steel modelling
Another model to study the structure and the column grid, which is made from steel string (in model). The model is also used for testing the composition of reposing room’s form (left). The roof is also made from drawings, with calculation in this model. In short, this model is used for test the right size
Shelter of the staircase A little bit change in the composition, make the shelter to have some curve line, harmony with the curve roof
Illustration for the experience while going up the staircase, with nature light from up high Another sketch illustrate the experience of light while walking in the narrow hall

DESCRIPTIVE MODEL STRUCTURE MODEL
Interior view with light pattern
View of Gathering space
To get inside the building, people have to go through a glass bridge hanging over a small lake. This view could make people worry and trying not to fall into the depth, this situation can make people not focus on the building while can experience the nature. At the end of the bridge is the entrance and a close view of the building, which will impress them more the solidity of the construction
Rooftop garden By building a strong structure, The garden has all the elements to be able to grow large trees and create the feeling of a small forest
