Hakkıdır, hür yaşamış bayrağımın hürriyet; Hakkıdır, Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklâl! 3
TURKISH NATIONAL ANTHEM Fear not! For the crimson flag that proudly ripples in this glorious twilight, shall not fade, Before the last fiery hearth that is ablaze within my nation is extinguished. For That is the star of my nation, and it will forever shine; It is mine; and solely belongs to my valiant nation. Frown not, I beseech you, oh thou coy crescent, But smile upon my heroic race! Why the anger, why the rage? This blood of ours which we shed for you shall not be blessed otherwise; For Freedom is the absolute right of my God-worshiping nation. I have been free since the beginning and forever shall be so. What madman shall put me in chains! I defy the very idea! I’m like the roaring flood; powerful and independent, I’ll tear apart mountains, exceed the heavens and still gush out! The lands of the West may be armored with walls of steel, But I have borders guarded by the mighty chest of a believer. Recognize your innate strength, my friend! And think: how can this fiery faith ever be killed, By that battered, single-fanged monster you call “civilization”? My friend! Leave not my homeland to the hands of villainous men! Render your chest as armor and your body as trench! Stop this disgraceful rush! For soon shall come the joyous days of divine promise... Who knows? Perhaps tomorrow? Perhaps even sooner! View not the soil you tread on as mere earth - recognize it! And think about the shroudless thousands who lie so nobly beneath you. You’re the noble son of a martyr, take shame, hurt not your ancestor! Unhand not, even when you’re promised worlds, this paradise of a homeland. What man would not die for this heavenly piece of land? Martyrs would gush out should one simply squeeze the soil! Martyrs! May God take my life, all my loved ones and possessions from me if He will, But may He not deprive me of my one true homeland for the world. Oh glorious God, the sole wish of my pain-stricken heart is that, No heathen’s hand should ever touch the bosom of my sacred Temples. These adhans, whose shahadahs are the foundations of my religion, May their noble sound last loud and wide over my eternal homeland. For only then, shall my fatigued tombstone, if there is one, prostrate a thousand times in ecstasy, And tears of fiery blood shall flow out of my every wound, And my lifeless body shall gush out from the earth like an eternal spirit, Perhaps only then, shall I peacefully ascend and at long last reach the heavens. So ripple and wave like the bright dawning sky, oh thou glorious crescent, So that our every last drop of blood may finally be blessed and worthy! Neither you nor my race shall ever be extinguished! For freedom is the absolute right of my ever-free flag; For independence is the absolute right of my God-worshiping nation!

Freund!

ATATÜRK’S ADDRESS TO THE TURKISH YOUTH
REDE AN DIE TÜRKISCHE JUGEND
Turkish Youth!
Türkische Jugend!
Your first duty is to preserve and to defend Turkish Independence and the Turkish Republic forever. This is the very foundation of your existence and your future. This foundation is your most precious treasure. In the future, too, there may be malevolent people at home and abroad, who will wish to deprive you of this treasure. If some day you are compelled to defend your independence and your Republic, you must not hesitate to weigh the possibilities and circumstances of the situation before doing your duty. These possibilities and circumstances may turn out to be extremely unfavourable. The enemies conspiring against your independence and your Republic may have behind them a victory unprecedented in the annals of the world. It may be that, by violence and trickery, all the fortresses of your beloved fatherland may be captured, all its shipyards occupied, all its armies dispersed and every corner of the country invaded. And sadder and graver than all these circumstances, those who hold power within the country may be in error, misguided and may even be traitors. Furthermore, they may identify personal interests with the political designs of the invaders. The country may be impoverished, ruined and exhausted.
Youth of Turkey’s future, even in such circumstances it is your duty to save Turkish Independence and the Republic! You will find the strength you need in your noble blood!
ABOUT THE FOUNDER UNSER BEGRÜNDER
RAHMİ SEYMEN (1933 - 2007)
The late Rahmi Seymen, the founder of Private Seymen Educational Foundation which deepened its roots growing into two campuses as “Darıca Ayşe Seymen Campus” and “İzmit Rahmi Seymen Campus” and became the most successful and experienced schools that went great guns in Kocaeli within the half centenarian history, had foreseen education as the most significant point in the development of a good society when he was alive and thus he expressed his feelings and thoughts as follows:
MAGAZINE FOR PRIVATE SEYMEN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Dear valuable parents, students and respectable teachers, In order to perpetuate the importance we give to education, we established the foundation of Private Seymen Educational Institutions with great expectations in 1981. The school opened their doors to education in 1983 which meant to be the precursor of a private educational institution for the Kocaeli public. The fact that it is a rooted institution without ever distorting the success line has been proven to the present day. I worked assiduously filtering my dreams through my experience in order to transform impossibilities to possibilities and absences to presences. Were we going to succeed in this project that we launched with great expectations? Even though it was difficult to give an answer to this question in those days, now I see that we managed it. The candle which we lit up with an imaginative spark lit up with thousands of candles today and I believe that it will continue to light up. Right decisions have led to the right results, our children who graduated from Private Seymen Education Institutions have their place in this family again as a teacher to train oncoming successful and respected generations. I am proud to be in one big family with our dear parents and students and huge team of staff chasing perfection. Our aspiration is to see all our children who attained Seymen Educational Institutions as a Turkish citizen who has proven themselves both to this nation and to the world and also to train successful, cultured, moral individuals who are in the pursuit of Ataturk’s principles and revolutions.
My dear children, this school is a collective heritage which arises from the labour and efforts of teachers, parents, and you students. I offer my utmost respect for representing this institution in the best way all the time everywhere. With these beautiful and sincere wishes I offer my health, success and happiness wishes to all my children, parents, and ever hardworking staff of our institution. With my best regards 9

Dear Seymen Family, As we are approaching the end of the first half of another school year, when I look back to the past semester, I realize and am proud of that our team members in each of the departments carried out very successful and innovative works. Our understanding of educating modern and multicultural individuals who maintain our national values is reflected on all levels of our education system. This understanding is also our life philosophy that our students, whose families trust in us, encounter with in every stage of their educational life. For this reason, foreign language education has always been a priority for Private Seymen Educational Foundation. With the help of educational programs we developed, we have been the first institution of our region that aims to teach two foreign languages at the same time. 10
MAGAZINE FOR PRIVATE SEYMEN EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
Our students, who graduated from our leading schools of the region after receiving a proper foreign language education offered since 1983, have always felt privileged to be “from Seymen”, and made us feel that way as well, by receiving exceptionally good places in university entrance exams and getting exempt from the obligation to complete a foreign language preparation year during their university education. The English language education in our schools is based on The Common European Framework (CEFR). This method requires to follow a system that provides students with a wider perspective in foreign language education, that aims to provide them with the necessary skills to be able to carry out their academic studies relatively easily with the help of the foreign language background, that includes activities that prepare proper environment for learning and that is student-centred, project-based, interactive, supported with training
Our goal is to enable our students use their linguistic skills efficiently and properly, which is aimed to be A2, B2 and C2 levels at the end of their education in primary, secondary and high school, respectively.
student who starts his/her education at Seymen Private Schools will be taught English for 3742 hours in total from Kindergarten till the end of high school, with full support of foreign and Turkish teachers. I wish all the success, health and happiness to our students of whom I am happy to follow how they grow, improve and learn.
A Kindergarten student will have taken English classes for 640 hours by the end of his/her 3 year education. All in 4 years, this is 1054 hours for primary school students, 1280 hours for secondary school students and 768 hours for high school students. In other words, a

technologies, unique and modern.

Dear Students, Education plays a crucial role in enabling a person with adequate knowledge. School is a social institution that reflects the standards of society and also a place where students begin to learn lessons of life to become a better person. Therefore good schools are needed for a better society. The aim of our school is to help our students to grow into fine human beings who are capable of facing the challenges of the present world. What you will read in
this school magazine— essays, poems, excerpts and reports reflect various aspects of student life in our school. A special thanks to firstly the English teacher Filiz Barık and the English Department editorial team for their willing co-operation in putting together the issue. I wish the reader of SEYMAG a happy reading. Best wishes,
Dear Parents and students, Being remarkably thankful to our great founder Rahmi Seymen, we have been working on our education programme without making concessions about our values, that is the secular, democratic and modern system. We, as Seymen College, aim our students to become successful, participative and respectful individuals who are deeply in love with their country and nation in both of our schools in İzmit and Darıca. Within the education years of our schools, our students have been academically, socially, culturally, athletically and musically successful.
As our academic staff is seriously aware of the responsibility of educating the students as citizens of the world, we are following an intense and fully equipped foreign language teaching programme. Our school has also been the exam centre for TOEFL exams in İzmit in order to make them aware of their level of English. We also have to say if it had not been for our students and their parents we could not have made our wishes come true both academically and socially. Furthermore we appreciate our teachers who always work devotedly. Finally we have to mention about the sincere support and help of the Board of Directors of our schools.

WHAT IS MUN?
PRIVATE SEYMEN HIGH SCHOOL IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE IT HAS STARTED ITS FIRST MUN CLUB! Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies, such as the United Nations Security Council, has been included in MUN. In some MUN clubs, the participants that are considered to be most contributing are given awards. During a conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, reaching
consensus, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. MUN groups exist to develop these skills and are usually organized as either a club, conference, or class. A conference is a school-wide, local, regional or international gathering of MUN students who come together over a period between one and five days. In recent decades MUN has greatly matured and expanded. It is now practiced all over the world by elementary, secondary, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. Some simulations are small, including members of only a single class. For example, 20 students can do a one-hour simulation of the (15-member) United Nations Security Council in their classroom. Other simulations can be very large, involving many committees and taking place over the span of several days. The majority of conferences generally involve anywhere from 50 to several hundred delegates, with most students living around that one region. The largest conferences can have thousands of participants from many different countries. 35

fun science
MARS FACTS Mars, or the “Red Planet” as it is sometimes known, has a dusty, rocky surface and a thin atmosphere. Its relatively calm conditions and close proximity to earth make it the most likely destination for future planet exploration by humans. It has already been visited by a number of Mars Rovers in successful (and unsuccessful) robotic missions. These highly advanced robots gather samples and record important scientific data for scientists back on Earth to study. Mars is nicknamed the red planet because it is covered with rust-like dust. Even the atmosphere is a pinkish red, coloured by tiny particles of dust thrown up from the surface. Mars experiences violent dust storms which continually change its surface. Mars has many massive volcanoes and is home to Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in our solar system, it stands 21km high and is 600km across the base. Mars has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide. It is not thick enough to trap the sun’s heat like Venus, so the planet is very cold. Temperatures range from -120 degrees Celsius on winter nights to 25 degrees Celsius in the summer. Mars has many channels, plains and canyons on the surface which could have been caused by water erosion in the past. Mars has very weak gravity which cannot hold onto the atmosphere well.

ENERGY TRANSFER THROUGH BALLS
WHAT YOU’LL NEED A large, heavy ball such as a basketball or soccer ball A smaller, light ball such as a tennis ball or inflatable rubber ball
Energy is constantly changing forms and transferring between objects. Use two balls to transfer kinetic energy from the the big ball to the smaller one. Now let’s see how this works. INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
1. Make sure you’re outside with enough space.
If you dropped the balls at the same time, the tennis ball should bounce off the basketball and fly high into the air. The two balls hit each other just after they hit the ground. A lot of the kinetic energy in the larger basketball is transferred through to the smaller tennis ball, sending it high into the air.
2. Carefully put the tennis ball on top of the basketball, holding one hand under the basketball and the other on top of the tennis ball. 3. Let go of both the balls at exactly the same time and observe what happens.
While you held the balls in the air before dropping them, they had another type of energy called “potential energy”. The balls gained this through the effort it took you to lift the balls up. It is interesting to note that energy is never lost, only transferred into other kinds of energy.
MAKE AN EGG FLOAT IN SALTWATER
WHAT YOU’LL NEED One egg Water Salt A tall drinking glass
An egg sinks to the bottom if you drop it into a glass of ordinary drinking water but what happens if you add salt? This fun experiment can teach you something about density. INSTRUCTIONS
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
1. Pour water into the glass until it is about half full.
Salt water is denser than ordinary tap water. The denser the liquid, the easier it is for an object to float in it. When you lower the egg into the liquid, it drops through the normal tap water until it reaches the salty water. At this point the water is dense enough for the egg to float.
2. Add 6 tablespoons of salt and stir. 3. Carefully pour in plain water until the glass is nearly full (Don’t mix the salty water with the plain water). 4. Gently lower the egg into the water and watch what happens.
If you were careful when you added the tap water to the salt water, they will not have mixed, enabling the egg to amazingly float in the middle of the glass. 47

On a flight on a small private plane, a doctor, a lawyer, a model, and an old lady with her grandson were the only passengers. Unfortunately, the plane developed engine trouble. The pilot went back to speak to the passengers. “I have good news and bad news,” he said. “The bad news is that the plane is going to crash, but the good news is that we have some parachutes. However, there are six people on this plane and we only have five parachutes. As you can see, I’m wearing mine right now.” With that, the pilot jumped out of the plane, pulled the cord for his parachute and disappeared from view. The doctor spoke up first. “Well, my job is saving lives and that’s one of the most important jobs in the world, so I should have one of the parachutes”, and she took a pack and jumped. Next was the lawyer. “I’m the most intelligent man in the world, so I should have one, too,” he said, and he took a pack and leapt from the plane. Then the model stood up. “I’m one of the most beautiful women in the world, so I think I should have one as well.” Sadly, the grandmother turned to her grandson. “Well, there’s only one left. I think you should have it, dear. I’ve already had the best years of my life.” “Oh, don’t worry, grandma,” said the boy, ‘The most intelligent man in the world just jumped out of the plane with my back pack.”
