2015 LEADERSHIP REPORT
2015 LEADERSHIP REPORT
FROM THE PRESIDENT Dordt College is an exciting place to be right now. Students from across the country and around the world continue to make our campus their home, each of them contributing to the vibrancy and diversity of our unique community. Over the past several years, we have seen steady growth in enrollment. This pattern is reflected most dramatically in the S.T.E.M. disciplines. Last summer, we had more students engaged in summer research than ever before. To accommodate this growth, the second phase of construction on our new Science and Technology Center will soon begin. The state-of-the-art facility will meet the changing needs of our student body and connect science facilities with those of other academic majors on campus. Keeping pace with rapid technological change is important if we are to give today’s students a broad, cross-disciplinary education that reflects the wholeness of Creation and that prepares them to understand the world in which they live, to steward it, and to develop it for God’s glory. This year, Dordt College celebrates its 60th anniversary. Our programs have always been grounded in God’s Word. Our study is shaped by a sense of history and moved by a spirit of wonder at the good world God created. Our work happens in small, ordinary acts of faithfulness: a student working through scales in a music practice room; professors working alongside students on research that benefits the medical community; students, faculty, and staff gathering on Wednesdays to worship in chapel; all of us sharing meals and ideas while living in community. The work we do here is made possible by your generosity. Donor-funded scholarships are making a Dordt education a reality for more students. Upgraded facilities and new academic programs are invigorated by your prayers and gifts. As I travel, I am energized by how you respond to the work we’re doing at Dordt College. As we look toward the future, please consider joining us as we equip people for lives of joyful service in God’s kingdom.
Dr. Erik Hoekstra President
PROGRAM OVERVIEW Dordt College benefits from the gifts and talents of many people—committed students, dedicated employees, supportive churches, loyal alumni, and faithful constituents—in its mission to “work effectively toward Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life.” The Leadership Support Program is a vital component of those efforts. The more than 550 contributors to this program have shown their commitment to advancing Reformed, Christian higher education by providing Dordt College with significant financial support in one of six categories: • Stewards Circle: $1,000 to $2,499 annually • Cornerstone Circle: $2,500 to $4,999 annually • President’s Forum: $5,000 to $9,999 annually • Cabinet Partners: $10,000 to $24,999 annually • Founders Club: $25,000 to $49,999 annually • B.J. Haan Society: $50,000 or more annually With gratitude and thanks for every gift that Dordt College receives, we acknowledge the generous contributions of the members of the Leadership Support Program this year. These leaders donated: • Cash or property totaling $1,000 or more annually • Irrevocable deferred gifts* such as trusts and annuities valued at $10,000 or more annually *Deferred gifts are generally credited at 1/10th of their face value for this program because of the deferred nature of the gift.

DARREL AND DIANE KUIPER / BUCKEYE, ARIZONA A proponent of Christian higher education who has served actively on school boards and on the ag advisory council at Dordt College, Darrel Kuiper is pleased that students can study agriculture from a Christian, biblical perspective. “I left Calvin College after a year of study because they didn’t offer programming that fit my needs,” says Darrel, who today has a master’s in dairy science. “If Dordt would have had an ag program at the time I went to college, I fully expect I would have been there.” Darrel is a fourth generation dairyman. With his wife, Diane, and son Calvin, he runs a family dairy that traces its roots back to his great grandfather’s dairy in Friesland. By year end, he and Calvin, a two-year agribusiness student at Dordt, plan to strike out on a new venture: custom feeding dairy cattle. Darrel sees his service on school boards and the ag advisory council as an act of gratitude for the privilege of being educated in Christian schools and as a way of investing in future generations through support of Christian higher education. “For us, it’s a way of giving back,” he says. Two of the Kuipers’ three sons graduated from Dordt, and Diane and Darrel appreciate Dordt’s Christcentered approach to education across the disciplines. “A biblical or Christian worldview is the only worldview,” says Darrel, “whether you’re in agriculture, education, or preaching the Word full time.”

DELLA VAN GAALEN AND BURBRIDGE FARM LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA Della Van Gaalen grew up in Michigan but moved to Alberta, Canada, where she and her late husband, Adrian, owned and farmed Burbridge Farm, growing primarily grain. Today, Della and her son Dave run the family business. Her son Nolan teaches engineering at Dordt, helping spur her interest in supporting the sciences and Dordt’s new science facilities. “I support Dordt because I believe it is important for students to realize that this is our Father’s world and that they are called to find their place in it and share his love,” she says. In addition to a son on the faculty, Van Gaalen has had six grandchildren attend Dordt, two of whom are current students. “I’ve found Dordt to be a warm, enfolding place offering a high-quality education,” she says. Her grandchildren have been well prepared to take up their professions, she says, and all grew spiritually while they were students. “I’ve been blessed to be a blessing,” she says. “I thank the Lord for Dordt College.”

DALE AND JEAN JANSEN WAUPUN, WISCONSIN Dale and Jean Jansen first connected with Dordt when their oldest son chose to come to study engineering. “He knew since he was young that he wanted to be an engineer,” they say. He also knew he wanted to study at a Christian college. Dordt fit the bill and has not disappointed either them or their son, who now works as a mechanical engineer. “Dordt feels so much like an extended family,” says Jean. The Jansens cite working with Financial Aid Director Mike Epema and the way the Dordt community walked with them during their daughter-in-law’s battle with cancer last year as examples. “Dordt offers a good environment in which our children have explored their callings and pursued their goals,” says Dale. They are pleased that their children and others can grow in a Christ-centered environment, and they are encouraged to see the results of such growth in students such as the engineers who are helping build a bridge for a community in Africa.

EVERETT AND CATHY HOEKSTRA OXFORD, CONNECTICUT Everett Hoekstra was a business administration major at Dordt,
graduating in 1981. As a student, he recalls, he didn’t really like the sciences. Today he is the chief financial officer at Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, and after nearly 30 years in life sciences industries, he now is fascinated with science and how intricately God created all things. Everett and Cathy have lived in Iowa, Virginia, Ohio, Germany, and now in Connecticut and remain convinced of the importance of Christ-centered education at all levels. They see college as particularly important because it is the time when young people set the course for the rest of their lives. “We’ve seen that more clearly as we’ve moved away from communities like the ones we grew up in,” says Cathy. “Being well grounded in faith before embarking on God’s calling to a particular field makes a difference.” Everett says his Dordt education has been a huge asset throughout his career, providing a solid foundation rooted in a Christ-centered world and life view toward all spheres of life, including business. “I remember Dr. Hulst quoting Abraham Kuyper, ‘There is not one square inch … over which Christ who is Sovereign does not cry, Mine.’ I cannot say enough about how valuable that vision has been for me,” he says. Cathy adds that Dordt has had the same impact on their five children, all of whom attended or graduated from Dordt. They pray this will also be true for their grandchildren.
ED AND JOYCE DIELEMAN / SULLY, IOWA Christian education has always been important to Ed and Joyce Dieleman. They’ve supported and sent their children to Christian elementary and secondary schools. Their three sons all attended Dordt. “College is just the next step,” says Ed. “We’d give up a lot of other things before we’d give up Christian education.” For him, the comprehensive Christian world and life view that was the hallmark of teaching when he was a student in the 1970s remains a critical influence in his life and helps shape everything he does as a businessman, church member, and father and grandfather. Ed and Joyce both work in a CPA firm in which Ed is a partner. They’ve enjoyed visiting Dordt frequently, making friends and watching their sons play baseball and participate in band. They say it seems that Dordt has always been a part of their life. “It takes money to offer a good education and keep facilities up-to-date,” Ed says. “We’ve been blessed in our business; it’s just part of life to give back.”

The business is growing, and Tracy keeps busy managing sales and people. “I’ve really come to appreciate the well-rounded education I received at Dordt,” he says. In addition to his business classes, he took communication classes and a range of core courses that taught him to “put the pieces all together. “I learned how to learn and gained the confidence I needed to be successful,” he says today.
“I thoroughly appreciate my education. College is expensive, but it was worth it.”

MIKE VANDER WEL / SEATTLE, WASHINGTON Mike Vander Wel headed to Washington for graduate school after Dordt and has remained there for 26 years. Today, he is a chief engineer in the commercial division of the Boeing Company, having been involved in management for the past 20 years. “My work seems to get more and more interesting,” he says, adding, “I feel like I’m having an impact every day.” Boeing’s commercial division will deliver 700 planes this year. “It’s interesting work for a farm kid from Wisconsin,” he says. Mike says the education he received at Dordt College gave him a Christian and philosophical framework for thinking about the world and people. And the strong academic program enabled him to compete “just fine” with people from places like CalTech and MIT. “I gained the skills needed to be able to see the big picture and organize complex solutions,” he says. He also took with him a “high view of people,” a sense that all people are worthy of respect as God’s image-bearers—something that continues to shape the way he does his work in a large company. He hopes it does the same for today’s graduates.

GORD AND GERT BLOM SIOUX CENTER, IOWA Gord Blom says he’s blessed to live every day what he learned at Dordt College. “The company I’ve worked with for 21 years lives what they believe by the way they build and promote their products and by the way they run their business and treat their employees,” he says. “They always take the high road.” That’s what they hope Dordt students embrace as they learn too. The Bloms believe that training Christians to live their faith in areas such as manufacturing and sales is crucial. Such a commitment often leads to other ways of serving, too. Gord has been involved with his church’s ministry to Laos, producing study materials, helping provide grain storage and milling capabilities for farmers, and building relationships with Lao Christians. “It gives real purpose to life,” he says. Gert, who worked in Dordt’s Admissions Office for many years, says, “Dordt gave us and our children so much. Our gifts are an expression of thanks to God and to Dordt College.”
JOHN AND KAREN SCHUTTER / MANHATTAN, MONTANA John and Karen Schutter count it a privilege to have raised their family in a region rich in agriculture and natural beauty. The Schutters grow potatoes and wheat in a broad valley near Manhattan, Montana, and John says life as a farmer has shaped his faith. “When you’re dependent on the weather, you’re dependent on the Lord,” he says. “Some years are really good, and some years aren’t as good. But the Lord has been with us through the valleys and on some mountain tops, too.” All four of the Schutters’ children graduated from Dordt College, and two of them met their spouses there. It’s a place that remains close to their hearts, and they often visit campus when they make the long drive from Montana to Ames, Iowa, where one of their daughters has settled with her family. “We think the world of Dordt and feel it has equipped our children for lives of service to God,” says John. Sending your children off to college isn’t easy, he adds. “Those can be challenging years for parents. You have to trust the Lord has a purpose for them,” he says. When his first child, Stephanie, was making her college choice, the Schutters encouraged her to choose a Christian school that taught from a Reformed Christian perspective. She chose Dordt and loved it; her three siblings followed suit. “Our children grew spiritually at Dordt more than at any other time in their lives,” say the Schutters. They hope to give other students the same opportunity, in gratitude for all that Dordt has given their family.

CHARLES AND MARLENE VEENSTRA SIOUX CENTER, IOWA Life for Charles and Marlene Veenstra has been entwined with Dordt College since they were students in the late 60s. They met here; Charles returned to teach here; they sent their four children here; and this year Charles will retire from here. “My dad believed Rev. Haan was on to something in his passionate commitment to a Kuyperian understanding that every square inch of creation and life matters to God,” says Charles. “That vision still fires me up.” “Dordt College has given me more than I’ve given it,” he says, after four decades of service. He and Marlene have been giving back for all of those years. “When you give, your care for something increases,” they say. That care has extended to hundreds of students. “It’s been a joy to help students work through their gifts and, step-by-step, find their calling and place in this world.”

DON AND SHEILA LAMMERS CENTENNIAL, COLORADO “The older I get, the more I see the importance of community,” says Sheila Lammers, reflecting on both her Dordt experience and her life experiences. “I know ‘community’ can be a buzz word, but it really is something unique.” Sheila and Don are actively involved in their communities, something that began when they were students at Dordt in the early 80s. Today Don is putting his business degree to work as a salesperson for Pella windows, and Sheila is living her love for seniors as a part-time and volunteer social worker—and they say the Dordt community still feels like family. “Dordt keeps surprising us,” Sheila says, grateful for the impact a Dordt education has had on them and their three children’s lives and professions. “Giving to Dordt will pay itself forward. It really will,” says Sheila.

KRISTEN BRANDS / SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA As a senior accounting major, Kristen Brands (’10) was awarded the Elijah Watt Sells Award, which is presented annually to those who have the top 10 scores in the nation on the CPA exam. Following graduation, she began working with accountants from the country’s top business schools at Ernst and Young in Minneapolis. She soon realized that she was “just as prepared or better prepared” than they were. “Being in upper-level classes at Dordt, which are often small in size, was like having daily personal tutoring,” she says appreciatively. She adds, the biblical worldview she cultivated as a student continues to shape how she does her work and lives her life. And the sense of community she still feels as a Dordt College alumna continues to enrich her life. Brands, the accounting manager responsible for the five accountants in her father’s 22 Taco John’s franchises, is helping make the kinds of opportunities she had at Dordt available to today’s students.

DAVID AND MAARTJE LEMSTRA TULARE, CALIFORNIA David and Maartje Lemstra have been on a dairy in California since they married. Milking cows and keeping books fits in between keeping up with the busyness of life as a young family heavily involved in church ministries and activities, Bible studies, school events, and more. “We’re very committed to Christian education,” says David. “Raising children of God is our first ministry.” The Lemstras’ five children range from elementary to high school age. “We appreciate Dordt’s biblical, covenantal approach to education,” says Maartje, adding that two generations of their families have already benefitted from Dordt educations. “God calls us to be a salt and light in the world,” says David. He believes that Dordt is committed to preparing students to be just that, whether in more academic or more vocational programs.

FRED AND DARLA KOELEWYN / PLANO, TEXAS Fred graduated from Dordt with majors in ag-business and biology and Darla with a business education major. They’ve put their educations to work around the country. Today, Fred is in charge of operations at a meat processing company, and Darla works for Prince of Peace Christian School. For both, their work has always been more than simply a job; it’s been an opportunity to give the best they could to serve those they work with and for. They learned that, in part, at Dordt. “In every class, whether organic chemistry or cell biology or ecology, God was part of the equation,” says Fred. “Everything is important as we work in his kingdom.” “Professors really cared about our learning and about us as people,” says Darla. “As we’ve moved around, we’ve found that many didn’t have that experience in college.” The Koelewyns appreciate the fact that Dordt “thinks outside the box” to serve those who want a Christian education, whether in more traditionally academic areas or more technical areas. They hope their gifts will continue to keep such a well-rounded education possible for generations to come.

EDA, INC. / SIOUX CENTER, IOWA Of the 15 employees at the Sioux Center engineering firm EDA Inc., six graduated from Dordt College. “We like to hire Dordt grads,” says President Norman TeKrony. “Dordt students are consistently wellrounded. They have a really good engineering education in general, but they also have a lot of knowledge in the areas of communication and speech, and they’re good at dealing with people. Those things are as important as technical skills.” EDA engineers design the often invisible systems that make buildings work efficiently. The firm specializes in heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, and signal and data system design and integration in new and existing commercial buildings. TeKrony, a 1986 Dordt graduate, has helped cultivate a company culture that encourages excellence and integrity. “Everyone here wants their job to be a benefit to our clients. They’re conscientious about doing their work well and serving others,” he says. TeKrony, along with the firm’s other major shareholders, appreciates the fact that Dordt provides well-trained engineers for their firm. They also value Dordt’s broader reach. “Dordt College plays an important role in our community, and we want to support that,” he says.
