The Dordt Difference “One outcome of the information age is that statistical reasoning is increasingly used by almost all professions to evaluate evidence and make data-informed decisions,” says Dr. Nathan Tintle, a professor in Dordt’s department of mathematics, computer science, and statistics. A strong preparatory program in statistics will help you produce data-driven arguments and make you a more savvy consumer. Tintle, who heads the program, has received a variety of grants for research projects that have involved students, and he leads a program that provides research opportunities for talented students. He has mentored more than 70 student researchers. “The applied statistics minor will give Dordt students a leg up on their peers in being able to critically evaluate and produce statistical arguments,” says Tintle.
THE PROGRAM The applied statistics minor can be combined with many majors. You’ll complete a research project in areas such as: Nursing/pre-med - informing doctors’ and nurses’ daily decisions about care Biology - driving the genetics revolution, global public health issues, and conservation efforts Psychology/sociology - assessing intelligence, evaluating performance of programs, analyzing trends Agriculture - evaluating crop yield and other applications in today’s high-yield marketplace Political science - understanding what polls are and aren’t able to tell us Engineering - helping design experiments, do quality control in manufacturing, and assess the impact of new procedures and techniques Chemistry - understanding underlying relationships and structure in chemical systems and predicting the behaviors of new compounds Business/economics - data-driven decision making Computer science - understanding data simulation, randomness, study design, data analysis, and storage are vitally important in today’s data revolution Religion - understanding local, national, and global trends in religious belief, do survey-based natural church development, and determine ministry priorities August 2015
