Why camp?

Wesley Acres Camp

Lake Poinsett Camp Storm Mountain Camp

An organized camp experience is a vital component in the development and education of the whole child. Camp promotes community, teaches critical thinking, embraces the natural environment, and creates future leaders, all in a safe and structured environment. Time at camp has a lasting impact on the lives of children. Why camp in the Dakotas? Dakotas camps takes the camp experience one step further by intentionally including opportunities and activities that allow campers to develop a deeper relationship with God and to see how God is at work in their own lives and the world. Camp is a natural extension of our local congregations and is cited as one of the biggest influences in an individual’s lifelong Christian discipleship and development as a leader. This is the 60th year that Storm Mountain Center has welcomed campers just like you. Make your plans to come and experience the 5 F’s: friends, fun, fellowship, food and faith. You will make friends like no others, fun for sure and have some great fellowship. I have been here already 16 years so I know the food is great. The last F is the most important one, faith. It is my hope and my prayer that your faith will be enhanced when you are here experiencing His creation while hiking, swimming in the creek, sitting amongst the trees, roasting a marshmallow for a s’more, or hearing a Bible verse in a little different way. Come and experience the mountain!

Take a break from your normal summer routine. Come spend some time with God and friends at camp. The pace of the camp is geared for school-aged and older mentally and/or physically challenged campers. There will be activities, crafts, campfires, lots of music, Bible studies plus old and new friends. A camp buddy (caregiver) needs to register and accompany each camper (at no charge) and will participate in all camp activities.

Get ready for 48 hours of fun and learning as you experience new friends, crafts, games, Bible stories, singing and the traditional camp fire. This is a great opportunity for those important small steps in personal faith and positive encounters with Christ and Christians ready to share God’s love. A shepherd, a familiar face of someone you know and trust from back home, can still be part of this camp.

Some games get you up to move around. Some games make you think. Others even make you laugh. Games are also a great way to explore who you are and what you can do either on a team or as an individual. The Apostle Paul observed ancient Greeks competing in sporting events and used that to help his readers to understand their faith journey and relationships with Christ and with each other. Together we will learn new and not so new games and their rules and strategies and through that we will also discover something about ourselves and our relationship with God.

Spend the weekend away from the normal and come to the spectacular. Retreat from daily family routines and refocus on Christ’s mission to Love God and Love Others. Camp activities, Bible Study, and down time to spend together. This camp invites all to come and be part of God’s family. No early bird discount.

It is just like riding a bicycle. The experience of getting away to grow and learn about God that we often do at camp is something we often think of as “a kid thing.” This camp will take something “for kids” like riding a two-wheeler and use it to challenge adults while they expand their faith. No matter where we are in our faith journey, we get comfortable and forget how far we could go if we were willing to grow with God. Come and ride for three days and grow in faith and relationship with others passionate about Jesus Christ and cycling as we learn about the greatest Domestique in history. No early bird discount.

T he place where we camp: It can be anywhere we notice and are aware of God’s presence with us. I am the vine: We make sacred bonds with one another and God by covenanting. Love one another: We have to look around to see that we are all valuable to God. I choose you: We make decisions that affect the ways we are connected. I have spoken to you: We have to listen for the still small voice. Abide with me: We have tools we can use to reconnect to God. I abide in you: Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
