Few names in rodeo and western culture resonate as strongly as Larry Mahan’s. A true legend, Mahan’s life and career have made a lasting impact on the sport of rodeo and the western lifestyle. Larry began competing in professional rodeo at fourteen and joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) in 1963. His unmatched determination and skill earned him six World All-Around Championships, five consecutively from 1966 to 1970, and a sixth in 1973. He also won two World Bull Riding Championships in 1965 and 1967, making him an eight-time World Champion.
Beyond the rodeo arena, Mahan became an icon in the western apparel industry, a musician, actor, color commentator, and television host. The 1973 documentary about his life, “The Great American Cowboy,” won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. His authentic style and passion for quality craftsmanship have inspired many to embrace western hats, making him the perfect namesake for our handcrafted hats, proudly made in Garland, Texas.
