Meet The Designer
JOHN CALLANAN VICE PRESIDENT OF DESIGN
I graduated from NYC’s FIT-Fashion Institute of Technology’s Millinery department in 1984, and I have never tired of introducing American ladies to the fun and mystique of wearing romantic hats. Be it at the beach, a special occasion, or as a protection against the elements, a SCALA hat adds a sense of style and mystery.
After graduating, I initially set up my workshop in NYC, where I have made hats for NYC Opera’s repertoire like Rigoletto (1988), various Broadway shows, and movies such as Working Girl (1988) with Melanie Griffith, Eight Men Out (1988) and it’s stellar ensemble cast, Sommersby (1993) with Richard Gere and Jodi Foster, and The Birdcage (1996) with Robin Williams and Nathan Lane – to name a few!
In 1995, I joined Dorfman Pacific Hat Company (now Dorfman Milano) as their first in-house designer. I have endeavored to use my design experience to design on trend, wearable, and sellable hats.
At SCALA Hats, we know our customer and we design with her in mind. She is understated and chic. I like to design hats that are elegant and timeless, not overly cluttered with excessive trims and ornamentation. I strive for clean silhouettes that enhance the wearer’s confidence and style. A SCALA hat should enhance, not distract, from the wearer’s beauty.
A hat is a very special accessory. It delivers instant glamor. I love that hats can say many things about the wearer from “look at me” to “leave me alone”. What will you say?

AEROHEAT EXTREME
A heat generating fiber that absorbs light to radiate thermal energy and keep your head warms.
BREATHABLE
This fabric is a lightweight, sun-protective, brushed cotton material with extra ventilation for enhanced air flow.
CASHMERE BLEND
Cashmere yarn blended with wool yarn. Cashmere and wool percentages will vary.
COOLMAX®
These sweatbands are made of a DuPont® fabric with the capability of moving moisture away from the skin, keeping your forehead dry.
CRUSHABLE
Your hat will retain its original shape, even after being crushed or stuffed in a bag or pocket.
CUSHION FRONT
These hats have additional padding in the front of the hat, giving them a more comfortable fit.
EMBROIDERY
All products with this symbol can be embroidered with your logo or other decorations, to help set you apart from the rest.
FLAT BRIM
Brims treated with extra sizing to create a stiff rigid brim that will not flop.
FLEECE LINED
Soft and cozy polyester or cotton fleece lines the inside of the hat for extra warmth.
FLOATABLE
These hats will float on top of the water, so you never lose your hat to the depths of a body of water ever again.
FOLDABLE
New innovative packable knit fabric with the look and feel of fine felt. Unfold and go.
HANDWOVEN
The bodies of these hats are woven and sewn together entirely by hand. In some cases this art can take weeks to complete

A unique fabric that absorbs and slowly releases water through evaporation, keeping your head cool for hours.

These hats are treated with an EPA registered contact repellent that is effective against mosquitoes, ants, ticks, chiggers, flies, and midges.
OIL CLOTH
A cotton fabric treated with oils and waxes to create a rugged fabric that is water repellent and protects you from the rain, wind, and dust.
ONE SIZE FITS MOST
These versatile hats have a stretchable or adjustable sweatband, for a more comfortable fit that will form to most people’s heads.
PACKABLE
These hats can go in luggage without any worries. Simply fill the crown of the hats with smaller items, and pack around the hat.
PROVATO
This is an innovative water resistant and vegan knit fabric, that looks and feels like felt.
RECYCLED
Recycled PET materials use less energy than creating virgin polyester yarns, create 75% less CO2 emissions,and help lower our overall carbon footprint.
ROLLABLE
These hats will keep their shape when rolled for packing and traveling. Many include an elasticized loop that helps keep your rolled hat secured.
SIZABLE
These hats have an adjustable drawstring within the sweatband. Simply pull both ends of the cord to tighten, and secure with a knot.
SOAKER
Simply soak these hats under water and they will keep your head and body cool for hours.
SOLARWEAVE
A sun-protective, brushed cotton material designed to provide lightweight, cool comfort with a UV protection factor of 40+.
