“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” Nelson Mandela

Benin is located in West Africa, bordered by Togo in the West and Nigeria in the East. It has a population of around 10 million. It is a French speaking country, but local languages such as Yoruba and Fon are commonly spoken. The official capital is Porto-Novo, but the largest city and centre of economic activity is Cotonou. Benin is among the poorest countries in the world, with it’s economy largely dependent on agriculture. Politically, it is one of the more stable democracies in Africa, making it one of the safer destinations. Some of the major focuses for development in Benin include water supply and sanitation, population control, agricultural reform, and education.

As in most parts of Africa, the country of Benin is made up of regions controlled by around 42 ethnic groups. One of the most prominent kingdoms was the coastal Kingdom of Dahomey, of the Fon ethnicity. They were known for their military preparation and were nicknamed ‘black Sparta’ by European traders. They were also famous for having a elite force of female soldier corps known as the ‘Ahosi’, or the ‘king’s wives’. In the 1400’s, Dahomey became the main regional power by becoming one of the centres of the transatlantic slave trade through their practice of selling prisoners of war who would otherwise be executed, and the area became famous as the ‘Slave Coast’. By the late 1800’s, the banning of the slave trade caused Dahomey to start losing power. This gave the French a chance to take over and colonize Dahomey. The Republic of Benin was formed after gaining independence from France in 1960.

AIESEC was officially created in BENIN in 2005 and there was no distinction between AIESEC in BENIN and AIESEC ENEAM which was the first local committee of AIESEC in BENIN. In this year there was increased external relevance of the entity because of the various impact projects that were carried out e.g Global money week ,Youth speak Forum, Africa code week and also partnerships that were created with UNFPA ,UNV and ministry of youth. This year also saw better working conditions ,increased financial sustainability, improved positioning in the AIESEC international network ,improved membership education an d development ,fluid and action oriented conferences and considerable growth in operations.

What would you compare an MC experience to?  In my point of view, it’s like being a minister of a country! Oh yes, that’s it… Being an MCVP in Benin the most rewarding experience so far in term of impact making and team experience. Impact in term of the scale of the strategies your design can have, and diversity because there were 6 different countries in my MC team at that time. I faced the most unexpected challenges, was pushed far beyond my emotional, mental and physical limits. And this made me a better vision of myself at the end of day. For the past 7 years, Benin had both national and international in its MC team, which means this country welcomes anyone willing to contribute to the entity’s growth. Are you ready to add your brick to this building called AIESEC in Benin 2020? Will you be one of those who will write 1819 story? It’s up to you! But know one thing: it will be worth it! See you in Benin hopefully Dear possible MCVP of our beloved AIESEC in Benin. I would like to thank you, first of all that you are considering this application! It means a lot to me, and here I will try to explain it shortly to you, WHY-O WHY-is this the best ever possible idea to apply! I was MCVP Marketing in a team of 6 different nationalities during the term of 1516. We have been crazy people and many of our friends and family thought about us that we lost our minds when we were in your shoes: considering to run. Let me put it right: we were absolutely-unapologetically-fully crazy folks! Being MC it’s insane…being international in a team like ours: more insane . We dreamed about an entity where LCs are super strong, able to growth-hack with moderate MC support. We believed in the people we had and focused on knowledge management in a lot of manner in order to create strong LCs we had in mind and we eventually managed to bring it into life. One of the main driver in AIESEC is to push people to learn to develop and be able to nurture even more people around them… not necessary the numbers what matters… because KPIs/MoS will eventually follow the people! Investing in humans what is the most important! So as MC we had an amazing term with incredible mental and physical challenges,. I mean it, for real, guys! If you want to be MC in Benin–especially, but not only international-just bear it in mind, that you will for sure break down many times and have to pick up yourself! Your greatest advantage won’t be your knowledge on this road but your adaptability and your resilience in the face of gigantic challenges! As MC, and LC, NSTs we hated and we loved each other at the same time… and still the same after many years!!! When you gr()o(w) through an experience like MC, the sweetest and the most treasured outcome will be human connections you made along the road! People in Benin-and along the journey I’ve spent there –are up till today the best friends of mine! The country itself and the entity especially it’s the most unique and wonderfully annoying and sweet peace of cake of the world!  . Wishing good luck Krisztina.kapuvari@aiesec.net Benin is the country in which her young people have outstanding potentials, it takes a leader to understand this, and it is a place with its difficulties as any other place would be. In connection to AIESEC, Benin is a country where you can make tangible impact to its young people because they are willing to make a difference and impact their community and outside. To lead these passion, readiness, persistent to take the entity to the maximum fruition. Never look the difficulty part of Benin as an issue instead take it as an opportunity to make a difference, you will achieve greatly. Thank you! Reach deep into your soul, challenge every assumption you have about AIESEC in Benin and yourself. Push the limit of possibility and create a vision for the future that represents YOU and YOUR hope for the organization. Understand the unique strength that makes you the best candidate for the role, and communicate that throughout the application process. Don’t be afraid of having too little experience. Many great leaders in AIESEC were not the most capable or knowledgeable or not even a great speaker when they started, but they learned from their team and listened carefully to those that challenged them. And most of all, get excited. Everything you are frustrated about now, you will have the power to change. Wishing you an exciting, challenging, impactful year of growth and limitless possibilities.

Benin MC member has been one of the best experience of my volunteer life. During that time, I earnt how to make results out of nothing( Financial resource, uncertainty environment…) But today, most of my dynamism seen by people are made by this experience. I encourage you to take the challenge not because you want it but because you really believe on the organization’s vision and what value it gonna make in your life and the lives of thousands youth in Benin and around the world. Enjoy it!
