Project 01

Under the leaf University life is diverse because of the various clubs and activities available. Fudan University, in Shanghai has a limited area and with its numerous clubs, has problems holding all of the different activities. My design intent was to use a flexible pavilion to create different spaces suitable for all kinds of activities whilst using no extra land.

The dark areas are which students seldom use or pass-by with the darkest parts being areas that students rarely use. According to the analysis of the campus’ four aspects, most school activities are concentrated in southeastern part of the university. Combining these two analyses shows there are three appropriate sites that can locate my intervention to attract more students and events.

03 inspiration from plane leaf tree

Plane leaf trees are all over the campus and provide shades for us. In the autumn, plane leaves fall down, curl up into different shapes and create multiple spaces under the leaves, I got my inspiration from this characteristic and tied it into my intervention. e

04 concept development

[Form study] Plane leaf is formed of veins and cells, and since the intervention is flexible, it has two stages. One is formed by only the veins and conveys the open space for some clubs. The other one is created by the combination of veins and cells that provide privacy with roof structures. The arrangement of cells in a leaf is irregular, cells huddle together and create the surface.

[Model exploration] I used lots of transparent helium balloons to modify the cells. Balloons move freely within the intervention but also restricted by the structure.

RE-IMAGING

Hundreds of old buildings are torn down and simply replaced by commercial district in big cities to achieve more economic benefits. The efficient way to achieve it is to truly understand consumer’s needs. My design intends to re-image the Wukang Market and bring in more economic benefits using marketing thoughts.

Wukang Market

Re-imaging Wukang Market

01

Site analysis

Wukang Road was recognized as one of the National Historic and Cultural Streets of China. The buildings in the road incorporate a diverse range of architectural styles, including Mediterranean, French Renaissance, English, and Art Deco. Wukang Market is located on Wukang Road in completely different style and thus has difficulties in harmonizing with other buildings. Because of high market rental and low yield, the market is now being destroyed. Within the radius of its services is full of residential buildings and there is no other market to replace current one, so I believe the market should be reserved.

02

Before & After

The current market is facing several problems, as the new generation is coming in, the older traditional market is no longer fits. [main problem] The food market’s target consumers are mainly in the 50-60s, so the opening times are between 8:00 am and 18:00 pm. With the short opening period and single consumer, it’s truly hard to locate the new market in the most expensive road in Shanghai. To solve these problems, adding more functionality to attract multiple types of consumers can bring in more economic benefits and achieve long-term development. [functions] By analyzing the composition of people, I found three main groups: current Shanghai resident, foreign resident and tourism. The functions I add should meet the needs of all three different types. Because the expensive rental, there is no open place for resident to communicate or entertain, no restaurant for commuters or tourism to eat, no space for people to partying or hold small concerts. In this case, I decide to add a commutity center, a catering area and an open space.

function & program

[interaction] People going to certain places are not only for the functions but also for the memories. By creating more functions of the new market, people no longer come for one reason with the same group but create new memories with different kinds of people. That’s also an important way to remain economic benefit. interaction between people

simplification Current market is surrounded by Spanish style, British style garden houses. Because of its height compare to the surroundings, it’s hard to get access to the sunlight and also poorly ventilated. Modify traditional Chinese market by cutting the building into two pieces, create an open space for ventilation while enlarge the area access to the sunlight. The market is divided into three parts with different functions.

transformation

[PART C] The Stone Gate is a symbol of traditional Shanghai residential building.

[PART B] The clotheshorse is everywhere in lane because of the high density and the closeness between the buildings.

The new market combines with three different parts. The upper left one is served as a community center to provide spaces for surrounding residents. The upper right one is served as catering area to provide a place for commuters and tourisms. The ground floor is served as food market in daytime, and provides an open space for all kinds of events at night.

Project 03

Gene(rate)ion Gene(rate)ion will investigate the possibility to adapt a traditional, local Shanghai high-street morphology to function as a core element of a very high density urban environment. Our design intends to connect the north and the south blocks of Shanghai French Concession Hengshan Rd-Fuxing Rd area closer to catalyze a new living space, which provides more public spaces for the low-income transient population, as well as recall the memories for the local Shanghai citizens.

We analyzed the former buildings in our site. The north area of the site is full of residential buildings, which overloads thousands of people. Therefore high-density buildings are needed. Furthermore, the site is located at one of the best locations in Shanghai; so remarkable skyscrapers are also required to represent the feature and beauty of Shanghai.

In order to replace old, low-rise building typologies with a more highly optimized system that better supports the evolution of the city to meet the changing demands placed upon it. We decided to make a new urban network based on three typologies according to their historical, cultural, social and physical aspects. In order to adapt the advantages of these three typologies and improve the problems, they have been modified using GA, to suit the specific city block and urban setting in Shanghai. Based on our design proposal, result generated by GA, as well as the aesthetic aspects, these buildings has been selected to arrange in our urban blocks.

A distributed network would have no centralized switch. Each node would be connected to several of its neighboring nodes in a lattice-like configuration. Therefore, Each node would have several possible routes to send data. If one route or neighboring node were destroyed, another path would be available. As a result, we build seven blocks and each block contains one high rise building and several low buildings with high density to make a customized area of the city.

[connection] Through the force analysis of the building, the stress line had been generated step by step. [bridge] The aim of the connecting bridge is to create the new orders of public space use, which helps increase the height of circulation space and create the connection between high-rise buildings and ground level structures. Bridges provide the new space experience and improve the efficiency of commuting, on the city level, an amazing urban fabric will be arranged in the old context. [bending moment] Bending moment and deflection of the networks like bridges have been calculated. The networks are following stress line distributions. The most efficient structure of bridges can be selected and save the construction material at the same time.

Our club was found in 2013 by me and some friends who love architecture. Within two years, our club has more than 300 people include teachers and students from other schools. We have model-making activities at Friday night and go to exhibitions on weekends. We also invite famous professors and architects to give speeches once a month.
