Serial Numbers:

Notes : This note usually has tiny holes. It was pinned to a Treasury letter which had signed by George T. Allen, Secretary to the Treasury. Notes that are still accompanied by this letter command a significant premium. There are approximately 30 notes [presented and circulation issues] that are thought to be in existance. The Coat of Arms displayed on the front of the note was a continuation of the design used on the overprint of superscribed notes in the preceeding three years. There was no official authority for the design used - it did not conform to grants for the Australian Coat of Arms given on either 7th May, 1908 (used on silver coins from 1910) or 19th September, 1912. The ’unofficial’ design was used on all issues up to 1933.

Valuation : r1a – Mc1 # Collins/Allen Ten Shilling Banknotes These notes only appear very rarely, so any valuations are largely hypothetical. $1.9m for rare Australian banknote The first banknote printed in Australia has become the nation's most expensive money, selling for a record $1.909 million [March 2008]. The historic banknote, with the serial number M000001, was printed on May 1, 1913, and presented to Governor-General Thomas Denman's daughter Judith by Labor Prime Minister Andrew Fisher. Ten shillings in 1913 would be just shy of $50 in today's money, which means the note sold for more than 38,000 times its equivalent face value. Source : NEWS.com.au Lot 4503 at the Noble Numismatics Sale 99 held in April, 2012 was a R1a note, in EF condition, which realised a price of $128,150.

Serial Numbers:

Prefix M followed by 6 Numbers - All Red M 000001 to M 000500

Notes : The first 500 notes (Serial numbers M 000006 to M 000500) were allocated by ballot to Parliamentarians and high-ranking officials, who paid for them. They were distributed with an accompanying letter signed by George T. Allen, Secretary of the Treasury. The letter was dated 13th July, 1913. Notes M 000001, 2 and 3 were presented to the Governor-General Lord Denman, his daughter Judith, who numbered the first note, and his son, at a ceremony on May 1, 1913. This date is regarded as the official commencement for the Commonwealth series of pre-decimal notes. The Prime Minister, Andrew Fisher paid for numbers 4 and 5. These low numbered notes attract significant premiums because of their historical significance.

Valuation : r1b – Mc2 # Collins/Allen Ten Shilling Banknotes These notes only appear very rarely, so any valuations are largely hypothetical. In 1995, notes 4 and 5 were sold for $115,500 and $143,000.

Lot 4502 at the Noble Numismatics Sale 99 held in April, 2012 was a R1b note, in VF condition, which realised a price of $119,995.

Other innovations were the addition of an oval in which the watermark profile of the Prince of Wales was displayed, and another watermark - HALF - behind each signature. Notes : The size of the ten shilling note was once again reduced in 1936 to permit greater efficiency by printing more notes per sheet. This followed close on the heels of similar action taken by the Bank of England for notes issued in Great Britain. Approximately 98,120,000 of the smaller Riddle/Sheehan notes were printed. Signatures are printed in orange. Minor variations in colour occur. The earlier notes tend to have a slightly darker shade of orange than the later notes. The green in the mosaic background also varies slightly. Valuation : r11 – Mc19 # Riddle/Sheehan Ten Shilling Banknotes Grading

Notes : The death of King George VI presented an opportunity to introduce new designs for the ten shillings note. Captain Matthew Flinders is featured on the front of the new note and the then Parliament House in Canberra appears on the back. Approximately 557,548,000 ten shilling notes were produced between 1954 and 1966 with the only change being in signatory H. C. Coombs' title when responsibility for issuing notes was transferred from the Commonwealth Bank to the Reserve Bank of Australia. The numbering wheels used on note printing machines had prefix digits and six numeral digits. To complete each series, a special hand press was used to imprint the seven digit numeral on the one millionth note. The practice was continued with decimalisation until 1971. Notes : First issued in September, 1913, the new Commonwealth of Australia one pound notes featured a gold mining scene at the Victorian Quartz Mine, Bendigo, Victoria on the back. The miners were W. Healey, F. Smith and J. Beveridge. Approximately 89,000,000 one pound notes were produced between 1913 and 1923 with basically the same design but with several variations to the colour and prefix/suffix of the serial numbers on the notes. A very rare note with less than 20 known to exist today.

Valuation : r18a – Mc26 # Collins/Allen One Pound Banknotes These notes only appear very rarely, so any valuations are largely hypothetical.

Notes : During the early stages of World War I, supplies of circulating banknotes rapidly dwindled as demand escalated. Emergency printing runs were implemented utilising the printing plates used for private one pound notes issued by the English Scottish and Australian Bank. The notes were superscribed in a similar manner to private notes which had been issued between 1910 and 1914 until official Commonwealth of Australia notes became available in sufficient quantities. The superscription used is known as ’Type 2’, having the same wording as ’Type 1’ but with only two serial numbers instead of three in the top left and bottom right corners of the overprint. The ornamental designs either side of the bottom number on the Type 1 overprint are missing. Approximately 1,300,000 emergency E, S & A superscribed one pound notes were printed but only 850,000 were actually issued. Valuation : r19 – Mc32 # Collins/Allen One Pound Banknotes These notes only appear very rarely, so any valuations are largely hypothetical.

Notes : This note was an interim emergency issue, printed at the Government Printing Office by the Government Stamp Printer, to meet the large demand for banknotes generated during the early years of World War I. It was known as the Rainbow Note because of the colours in the design which merged from light blue ends through green to bright orange in the centre of the front. On the back, this colouring was reversed. Valuation : r20a – Mc33 # Collins/Allen One Pound Banknotes These notes only appear very rarely, so any valuations are largely hypothetical. Notes : By introducing a ’legal tender’ status for issued banknotes, there was no longer a need for them to be redeemable in gold. The opportunity was taken with this change to reduce the size of the note to a more manageable size. Other innovations were the addition of an oval displaying the watermark profile of the Prince of Wales (later to become famous as the King who abdicated Edward VIII) , and another watermark - ONE POUND - behind each signature. Notes : This note, designed and printed by Thomas S. Harrison, is longer and narrower than earlier issues. It was introduced to improve production efficiency by allowing 6 notes instead of 4 to be printed on each sheet. The reverse design of the Hawkesbury River was retained and additional security features were added. A basketweave watermark was used around the borders and the denomination appears in watermarks in the center of the note. Approximately 11,290,400 five pound notes were printed between 1924 and 1927 with James Kell’s signature, firstly as Chairman, Note Issue Department, and changing to Governor of the Commonwealth Bank in 1927. The Kell/Collins signature combination was printed in both black and dark blue. Examination by holding the note up to light may be necessary to determine the colour used on a particular note. Valuation : r38a – Mc58 # Kell/Collins Five Pound Banknotes

Notes : By introducing a ’legal tender’ status for issued banknotes, there was no longer a need for them to be redeemable in gold. The opportunity was taken with this change to modify the designs to show King George V on the front and a bas-relief panel on the back depicting ’Commerce’. Other innovations were the addition of a circle in the lower center displaying the watermark profile of the Prince of Wales (later to become famous as the King who abdicated - Edward VIII). Approximately 20,338,000 five pound notes were printed between 1933 and 1939 featuring the Riddle/Sheehan signature combination. Cross-hatching with red and green ink on approximately half of the notes produced a ’pink’ effect on the King's face. On the remainder, lack of crosshatching left the King’s face white. Notes : In 1991 Note Printing Australia [NPA] issued a 25th anniversary of decimal currency release consisting of the last 800 ten shilling, one pound, five pound and ten pound notes. Included in this release were the first issue one, two, ten and twenty dollar notes. Many of these sets have been broken up by individual sales and can cause confusion in the marketplace. They have allocated a seperate classification Mc72b to try and avert this problem. Valuation : r50X – Mc72c # Last Serial Prefix TD10 - NPA Issue

Notes : This unique specimen was apparently prepared at around the same time as the 1923 T.S. Harrison issues of the ten shillings, pound, and five pound notes by printers Perkins Bacon & Co. By the time a circulation issue was released in 1925, the design had changed and the title of the Head of the Commonwealth Bank had been changed from Chairman of Directors, Note Issue Department to Governor. Although listed in print catalogues with a general release classification, this was a specimen note. The design of the note remained unchanged throughout his reign, with only the signatories being modified. The first signature combination Sheehan/McFarlane - was printed in red, while the remaining combinations until 1954 were printed in black. Approximately 21,924,000 ten pound notes were produced between 1940 and 1954 when a new design with Captain Arthur Phillip on the front and an industry and science theme on the back was introduced. Last serial prefix WA62 # r63X – Mc86c # NPA Issue Notes : In 1991 Note Printing Australia [NPA] issued a 25th anniversary of decimal currency release consisting of the last 800 ten shilling, one pound, five pound and ten pound notes. Included in this release were the first issue one, two, ten and twenty dollar notes. Many of these sets have been broken up by individual sales and can cause confusion in the marketplace. They have allocated a seperate classification Mc86b to try and avert this problem.
