Dear Bournemouth, So the holiday season is upon us. Hayden, our son, has gone to Grandma and Grandad’s for a couple of weeks up North. He could not wait to get in the car! When I called this evening and Grandma asked if he wanted to speak to me, his casual response was “No that’s fine”. I guess he is doing well then! Funny aren’t they. I can’t blame him… boat trips, quad bikes, fishing, parks, games and undivided attention. That’s what Grandparents are for hey. We are very lucky. I hope if you are a grandparent that you get to see your grandchildren too. So — despite all the fun of the summer (and I do hope we get some more sunshine) do take a look through The Bournemouth Directory and get some help in the house, have the garden maintained, your bike MOT’d, update your insurance, have a loft conversion or indeed get lots of things done that you haven’t gotten around to yet. All of the advertisers inside will be very willing to help. Please give them a call and do mention the Directory! I always love to hear that the local people are getting lots of calls. There are of course many articles from local organisations and clubs who would also love to hear from you. There is a full index on page 30. The very lucky winner of the Big Three at the BIC last month was Rachel Drew. Well done to you and we hope you have a great day out with the family. This month the prize is two tickets to The Musicosity Festival. Good luck! Steve and I wish you all a fabulous summer!! Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

Talking about wildlife with

Bees

The buzzing drone of a bee is a familiar sound and a sign of summer to us all. There are over 250 different types of wild bee in the UK, from the biggest bumble bees down to small solitary bees, and the part that they play in our ecosystem, food chain and economy is invaluable. Bumble and honeybees live in colonies, whereas solitary bees build their own nests and are not dependent on others. Most bees feed on pollen and nectar, although leaf cutter bees feed their larvae on chewed leaves instead of pollen. Some bees, such as cuckoo bumble bees and some solitary bees, don’t collect their own pollen but lay their eggs in other bees’ nests as parasites. Many plants and flowers depend directly on the pollination carried out by bees, as do dozens of crops, including an estimated one third of human food sources. However, despite their importance to us and the environment, bees are facing severe threats and even possible extinction caused by modern farming practices, increased chemical use, disease and loss of habitat. Our meadows no longer support the wide variety of wild flowers they once did, and many hedgerows have been lost in the last few decades, leading to a loss of vital food sources for the bees. Some bumblebee species have already vanished altogether and others are in decline. Urgent action is required to ensure the survival of our bee populations, and everyone can do their part to help reduce the plight of bees. By not using chemicals and by

BD August 2011 page 10

growing traditional garden and native wild flowers such as foxglove, lavender, catmint, comfrey and clovers, you can create a natural, bee friendly habitat. Try to introduce wild vetches such as bird’s foot trefoil and red clover in to your lawn or at least part of it. The pollen is particularly pr o t ei n-r i ch a nd v er y i m po r t a nt f o r developing bumble bee embryos. Smaller bees will prefer single, open or flat-headed flowers such as daisies, scabious and evening primrose. Herbs are also excellent bee plants. Putting up a nesting box or tube is easy and providing a home for bees will benefit your garden as well. For more information on bee friendly gardening, see: www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wg

August’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts! Trees and Shrubs Some trees and shrubs that have flowered can now be pruned. They should be pruned after flowering. If bearing fruit, prune after cropping.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Wisteria can be pruned back to four or five leaves now.

Roses If there are two few new canes one or two of the oldest strong ones can be kept; cut back their side shoots to between four and six inches (ten to fifteen cms).

Borders and Beds To keep up the vigour of flowering plants they should be watered well and fed fortnightly. Give a good mulch afterwards. Always pick flowers regularly.

Bulbs and Corms Daffodil bulbs that were lifted after flowering and placed in store should be planted towards end of month, or any spring bulbs.

Fruit As soon as the last fruit has been picked all su mmer-fru iting raspberries & blackcurrants should be pruned before the end of the month.

Vegetables All spring vegetables should be sown in the first two weeks of August e.g. cabbage, radish, parsley, winter spinach.

Greenhouse and Frame Cyclamen tubers rested during the summer may be started into growth again, knock them from their pots and replant them in potting compost.

House Plants While away, to keep plants well watered place them in a large clear bag with a little water in the bottom, blowing up bag and tied tight. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Rock Gardens and pools Old flowering stems should be cut down to prevent from unwanted reseeding. Be sure to keep pools filled to make up for loss by evaporation.

Lawns To make a new lawn or fill in bare patches seed should be sown before the end of the month.

VULCAN EFFECT SPREADS TO A SECOND DISPLAY Avro Vulcan confirmed for second Festival appearance Bournemouth Air Festival organisers have confirmed that the mighty Avro Vulcan will now be able to display twice thanks to the support of S&D Leisure, who are supporting Saturday’s display, and Bournemouth Airport, the appearance supporter for Sunday.

Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Air Festival director says; “What a great addition to an already great flying programme. We’re so pleased to have the Vulcan for a second display, so a big thank you to S&D Leisure and Bournemouth Airport for their generous contribution.”

Stanley Reeves, owner of S&D Leisure said; “We’re proud to support the Vulcan display on Saturday where she’ll be joining the Red Arrows and Tornado Role Demo for what I’m sure will be another great Festival ‘power hour’. It’s certainly going to get loud!”

The Bournemouth Air Festival will be taking place at Bournemouth seafront on August 18th to the 21st and boasts a line up that includes the Red Arrows and The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Sally Windsor from Bournemouth Airport said; “The Vulcan is such a tremendous crowd-puller at every event she displays at, so the opportunity to bring her to Bournemouth was too tempting to pass up.” The imposing bomber is operated by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who are delighted at the opportunity to display a second time. CEO of the Trust Dr Robert Pleming said; “We have always said that Bournemouth is a real highlight for us. The flight path along the beach is glorious, the huge crowds very enthusiastic and the reception to the Vulcan is always extremely warm, so we’re very grateful to S&D Leisure for allowing us to extend the Vulcan effect to a second display”.

Some Dorset Bones and Burials

G

rue s o m e pe r ha ps , b ut nevertheless fascinating, Dorset has some odd tales to tell about some of its burials. Take Mrs Perkins, for instance… She died in 1783, terrified of being buried alive, and so gave the strictest of instructions that her coffin should have a hinged lid. She wanted to be able to push it open if she suddenly woke up after her funeral. She also ordered that she should lie in a building with a special lock to its door that could only be opened from the inside. Imagining every awkward possibility, she even stipulated that the building should be near the school which used to be in St Michael’s Loft in Christchurch Priory – guessing that the kids there would hear her shouts if ever she managed to squeeze out of her coffin but be unable to get out of the building! If you go close to Christchurch Priory today, just beyond the east end, in the grounds beside the river walk you can find a weirdly puzzling building. It intrigues those who walk by, as there is no indication as to what it is. It is, of course, the building where old Mrs Perkins lay for twenty years after her death. It’s empty now, as she was taken to be buried with her

husband when he died. It’s an odd tale, but has a spice of adventure attached to it, because it may well have been used by Dorset smugglers as a hiding-place for their contraband goods. ——————————— And what about the story of the Dorset Saxon King whose bones were kept for years in an old cutlery-box in the vaults of the then Midland Bank in Woking! The King in question was the teenager, Edward the Martyr, killed by his wicked stepmother so that she could put her own son, Ethelred the Unready, on the throne. Edward’s bones were lost for centuries after Shaftesbury Abbey was destroyed by Henry VIII. Dramatically, they were rediscovered in the 1930’s. However, they became the object of a bitter quarrel between two brothers who both claimed ownership. While the brothers engaged in a lengthy legal argument, Edward’s royal bones were lodged with the Midland Bank in Woking. However, eventually they were given as relics to Russian Orthodox monks who now keep them in a shrine in Brookwood Cemetery. People come from far and wide to venerate them…

He was the Jeremy Paxman of his time, and cabinet ministers were terrified of being quizzed by him. His grave is in Whitchurch Canonicorum, where the headstone declares: In loving memory of SIR ROBIN DAY, THE GRAND INQUISITOR. ——————————— When you next see Old Harry Rocks, think of the novelist H. G. Wells, whose War of the Worlds more or less gave a kick-start to the entire genre of science fiction. After cremation, Wells’s ashes were cast into the sea next to Old Harry. ——————————— And in Halstock you can find a tombstone commemorating John Pitt, whose astonishing long life enabled him to live in three centuries! He was born in January 1799 and died in January 1901. He lived in the reigns of four monarchs – George III, George IV, William IV, and Victoria. If only he’d managed to survive just two more days he would also have lived in the reign of Edward VII! ——————————— These stories and many more can be found in David Hilliam’s most recent book, The Little Book of Dorset, (£9.99 from most bookshops). David is a local writer and lecturer, and is
