Fonz tells Bournemouth students “school is cool!” HENRY “The Fonz” Winkler inspired students at the Oakmead College of Technology when he paid a visit. The actor, who is dyslexic, was at the north Bournemouth secondary as part of his high profile UK tour raising awareness of the needs of children with learning challenges. A hectic schedule including a meeting at Number 10 and TV and radio appearances was set aside to allow time for the 65year-old actor to talk to local children about his own experiences in school. Th e au dien ce of 300 p upils from Oakmead and Elmrise Primary sat spellbound as he explained how he went on to succeed as an actor in TV and films and now a best-selling author of children’s books – the central character is a 10-year-old boy with dyslexia. He was recently awarded the OBE for his work with ch ild ren with learn in g difficulties. It’s all a long way since he swaggered around Arnold’s Drive-In with his friend Richie Cunningham in the hit 1970s and ’80s American sitcom Happy Days. “Every single one of you has greatness in you and your job is to figure out what is is, and then give it to the world,” he told

the pupils. “School was unbelievably hard for me – teachers didn’t know what dyslexia was at that time. “I was labelled a troublemaker, I was the class clown. I got a bad grade in everything but lunch – I was great at lunch.” He then signed copies of his books, called Hank Zipzer, the World’s Greatest UnderAchiever. Executive head at Oakmead, Dr Annetta Minard, said: “He met pupils from all the year groups and insisted on making sure he spoke to everyone. He was a great inspiration.” Henry’s tour was organised by First News, the national newspaper for children.

Chris Packham’s wildlife photography arrives at Moors Valley Country Park A collection of stunning wildlife photographs by lifelong naturalist, broadcaster and author Chris Packham is on display at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood from 16 July – 28 August. Familiar to 4 million viewers across the UK as the new presenter of BBC’s Springwatch, Chris is known internationally as one of the world’s most inventive wildlife photographers. His stated mission is to infuse the world of wildlife photography with a little more artistic content and his images portray the overwhelming and simple beauty of the natural world. “We are really looking forward to hosting Chris’s wildlife photography exhibition,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger. “Anyone who has seen Chris on Springwatch will be aware of his affinity with the natural world. “At Moors Valley we want to encourage more people to get out and about and enjoy our local countryside and we know our visitors are going to be really inspired by his work.” Unlike many of the major photography exhibitions that take place at Moors Valley, Chris Packham’s images are for sale and may be bought and taken home that same day. The exhibition is open every day from 9am – 5pm. There is no entrance fee but parking charges do apply.

TEENAGERS GIVEN AWARDS FOR BUILDING SCHOOL IN AFRICA A group of teenagers from Bournemouth have each received a Teenage Award Scheme certificate from Dorset Police for helping to build a school in Africa last year. The youngsters – aged between 12 and 18 years old – made up an expedition of 22 Scouts and Explorer Scouts who went to Uganda for over five weeks during the school summer holidays in 2010 to build a school in the south of the country. The group, who are from the 38th Bournemouth Scout Group based at Winton and Avon Explorers based at Iford, worked with their Scout leaders for three years to raise the £120,000 required to complete the project. Inspector Mike Claxt on, Neighbourhood Inspector for Bournemouth North, presented the teenagers with their certificates at the Scout Group AGM at Butchers Coppice in Bear Cross on Thursday 23 June. Inspector Claxton said: “These teenagers should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved and they are a great example to others. “Going out to Uganda and helping to build this facility is an extremely impressive achievement. But to have also worked so hard to raise so much money to fund the project makes this a truly exceptional accomplishment. “We so often hear about the bad things that a minority of teenagers get up to, but the hard work and achievements of these young people clearly shows that teenagers in Dorset contribute so positively to our communities.” The teenagers left the UK at the start of the school summer holidays and spent over five weeks in Uganda building the school – and as members of the Scouting Association, they camped for almost the entire time that they were there. The expedition – named ‘Nile 2010’ as the location where the build took place is near to the source of the River Nile – resulted in a school being built near J inja, U ganda t o help disadvantaged children in the area.

The teenagers worked and camped alongside Ugandan Scouts, and the school that they helped to build has proved extremely valuable to the young people of Jinja. Mike Harley, expedition leader, said: “The whole leader team is very proud of what our young people achieved. We are also grateful to the many people who supported our expedition and project. “We are looking forward to providing further support to the school in the future.” The Teenage Award Scheme was set up in January 2010 by Dorset Police to recognise the achievements of teenagers living in Dorset. Anyone between 13 and 19 years of age can be nominated for an award. Talking about wildlife with
Summer Heathland Nights Heathlands provide a unique habitat for a wide range of wildlife, and Dorset heaths are amongst the best in Britain. Summer nights are a perfect time to visit and explore, as the heaths are at their most colourful at this time of the year, and many species remain active until late evening when the weather is warm. Many heathland plants are in their full bloom and glory from July to September. Heather, gorse and bog asphodel create a stunning sea of purple and yellow, with the cotton grass adding its fluffy white flowers to the colourful mix. Sundew, Britain’s most common carnivorous plant, flourishes in the damp, boggy areas, as do many different species of dragonflies. For insect enthusiasts, there is also an array of other invertebrates, including heath grasshoppers, emperor moths and wolf spiders. Birds are plentiful in the summer and on a fine evening you can admire the dashing flight of the hobby, catching dragonflies for dinner. At twilight, the enigmatic nightjars become active. These summer visitors from Africa are a rare and elusive species, and although you may not be able to catch a glimpse, they can often be recognised by the male’s strange ‘churring’ song that echoes through the ni gh t. O th er avia n denizens of heathland

include the Dartford Warbler, stonechats and woodlarks. No doubt you will have heard about the huge fire that burnt around a third of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Upton Heath in June. We have been overwhelmed by the response of local people, who turned out in large numbers in the days after the fire to help to rescue surviving reptiles. Now the work begins to make sure that the untouched areas of heath are in the best condition for wildlife, assess the depth of the fire damage and to manage the regrowth and recovery of the ecosystem for the full range of rare plants and animals. While we will see green shoots very quickly, this will be just the start of a long road to full recovery.

WATCH OUT FOR THE BUGS! Trees and Shrubs Some shrubs which flower mainly from one-year-old wood such as Philadelphius and Deutzia may continue to bloom into July. They should be pruned after flowering.
Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Hybrids that bloom in spring and summer, if cut back will bloom again.
Roses The chief task at present is to remove faded blooms, cut back to good strong bud and remove all suckers from root stock. Continue to feed with rose fertilizer.
Borders and Beds
Lawns Continue with regular mowing, water if necessary. Treat any remaining weeds with a suitable lawn weedkiller. Give a dressing of lawn fertilizer, if not already done.
Fruit Apples and pears in restricted forms such as cordons need summer pruning. Strawberry plants that have finished fruiting should be cleaned and tidied.
Vegetables Outdoor tomatoes grown on single stem must be tied to a stake as single growth progresses. In warm humid weather watch out for an attack of blight in potatoes.
Greenhouse and Frame On summer days the temperature can rise very rapidly and to keep cool, water floors and benches twice daily.
Make a regular practice of removing dead flowers to prevent seed, this helps to channel energy into more blooms. Lavender flowers should be cut before they expand, if drying.

Locked up at the Red House A new exhibition that unlocks the history of locks & keys A new exhibition at the Red House Museum promises to unlock the mystery of locks and keys. You just won’t want to forget your key again! Brian Morland, the curator of the History of Locks Museum said, “Locks and keys are to most people mysterious objects. We put all our trust and faith into them everyday when we lock the front door or lock our cars. Few of us are aware of the mechanical forces that have been activated.”

Brian’s fascination for locks and keys started when he began rummaging about in his father’s workshop for discarded locks. His father, who was a local locksmith, inspired him to investigate locks from the past. “I started to examine and repair broken springs and also made up missing keys. Soon I had a good grasp of the technical side of things, and before long I had amassed my own collection of specimens.” The exhibition which opens on Saturday 25 June showcases the history of locks and keys. A Friend In Need by Shelma Vaughan I closed the door behind Mr & Mrs Liversedge and rested my forehead against its cool surface. I felt so weary. Hearing a noise behind me, I stiffened. "They've gone then?" I turned round reluctantly and nodded. "Good riddance." I bridled, as he had known I would. "They help pay the mortgage. Them, and all the others like them." lain shrugged. "Do they know what a hypocrite you are?" I turned my head away, not bothering to argue. He was right. As a marriage guidance counsellor I helped others patch up their relationships whilst my own was disintegrating rapidly. I knew the theory but could not seem to make it work for us. lain stalked off towards his studio. Exasperated, I knew I had to get away. Grabbing my keys from the hallstand I fled the house. Oblivious of everything, I drove around for a long time, mulling over the tatters of our marriage. We had been happy together for five years before our wedding, eighteen months ago, but since then it had all gone down hill. Why? Gradually I became aware of my surroundings. Looking around, I discovered I was near Sheila's house. On impulse I decided to visit my old school friend. Although amazed at my unheralded appearance, she soon had me settled at her kitchen table with a large mug of tea and a plate of homemade cakes to share. "What's the matter, Izzy?" I gave her a half-smile. "Who say's anything's the matter?" "You turn up here unannounced with a stricken look on your face and tell me everything's fine? Get real, Isabelle Andrews, I've known you too long to believe that." The concern in her voice caused tears to start spilling down my cheeks. I fumbled through my pockets for a tissue but Sheila already had a box to hand. She placed them on the table, sat down and put her arm around me. I rested my head on her shoulder whilst the pain and anguish that had been building up for months flowed out. Once the torrent subsided, Sheila took hold of both my hands and gently pulled me around to face her. "What's up, Iz?" Now I held nothing back. I told her of the critical, wounding words and icy silences;

the anger, resentment and sadness and the insurmountable chasm between lain and me. "I don't know what went wrong, Sheila. Everything was great until we got married..." Sheila looked intently into my eyes. I felt as if all my secrets were exposed to the glare of her x-ray vision. I held her gaze as long as I could, then mine dropped to our linked hands. "Izzy, you can't let the pain from your parents' divorce sour your marriage." "I'm not. I...." Words dried up as I started to consider what she had said. Despite my parents persistent bickering, my childhood had always felt secure. I had been shocked when they announced their separation. My bewilderment had only increased as the divorce had degenerated into such acrimony and vitriol that both of them were still licking their wounds now, fifteen years later. "Izzy, do you love lain?" Sheila's voice cut across my reverie, surprising me. She carried on. "You have to decide whether you want to be with him, or not. If you do, you've got to forget the past and get on with living, and loving, in the present." Not waiting for a response, she quietly got up and left the room. I hardly noticed, blinded by the realisation that I had been afraid it would all crumble to dust from the moment we had married. I was so scared of becoming as bitter and stunted as my parents that I had been pushing lain away, building walls to protect myself. I had to get home. I did not stop to say 'goodbye'. I knew Sheila understood. I had to see lain, had to find out if we still had a chance. The journey home was interminable but eventually I pulled onto our drive. Jumping out of the car, I ran round the side of the house to Iain's studio. In my panic, I flung the door open harder than I had intended, lain looked up in surprise. "I'm sorry, love." My speech of explanation deserted me but lain must have seen something different in my face for his own softened. He held out his arms. With a strangled sob I fell into them and buried my face in his chest. He kissed my hair. "I do love you so much, my Izzy Drew," he whispered, using the old pet name I had not heard in months. Relief and joy spread through me. It was not too late. I had come home in time.

Kilimanjaro Challenge for Jigsaw Appeal The Jigsaw Appeal is a £1.5 million appeal to transform the Women’s Health Unit at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital, a unit which desperately needs your support to bring about a better experience for patients and their families. Because I’ve had family and friends fall victim to similar conditions (and because I love a challenge), I’ve decided to climb Mt Kilimanjaro (5895 meters) this September (6th – 21st 2011). The trek will last 8 days, taking the Lemosho Route and directed by World Expeditions (who also took Chris Moyles and Cheryl Cole to the top!) The terrain involves forest, heath, rocky outcrops and glaciers at the very top. Added to this is the challenge of adjusting to the altitude. I aim to raise £4000 pounds for the Jigsaw Appeal, and am asking anyone who feels
