‘L’otter’ fun had celebrating the official launch of Otter Oasis at the Oceanarium, Bournemouth The official VIP launch event to celebrate the Oceanarium’s first-ever mammal display ‘Otter Oasis’ was a huge success, with more than 200 leading travel and tourism industry professionals, media and the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Chris Bulteel in attendance. Having taken place on Tuesday May 17, guests gathered to celebrate the launch of the new enclosure which has created a brand new experience for visitors and is now home to two Oriental small clawed otters called Bea and Buster. Guests enjoyed complimentary bubbly, delicious Koh Thai Tapas and had the opportunity to have a relaxing Oriental hand massage courtesy of Southbournebased Hush Holistics. Bea and Buster were full of excitement at the arrival of th e i r gu e st s an d p u t o n a gre at performance, swimming and playing in their new home. Oliver Buttling, Group Curator of the Oceanarium, said: “We had a fantastic turn out for the event. The otters were really playful and guests thoroughly enjoyed seeing them explore their enclosure. We’re now looking forward to continuing the celebrations with our family activity week at the end of the month. It’ll be an ideal opportunity for new and regular visitors to come and see Bea and Buster in their new home, while enjoying a fun day out.” A series of feeding sessions and talks will
BD June 2011 page 6
take place throughout the week, packed with lots of interesting facts to learn about the furry friends, including how they play and juggle with rocks and pebbles and how they communicate using different calls, cries and instinctive sounds from their intelligent otter vocabulary. Otter feeding sessions are at 10.30am and 1pm daily. To complement the otter adventure, visitors can order otter cookies from the Offshore Café and can purchase otter souvenirs from The Cove gift shop to remember their trip, with a week-long special offer to take advantage of.

TENANTS AND LANDLORDS SHOULD STEP-UP THEIR SECURITY AS SUMMER MONTHS APPROACH ADVISES BELVOIR If you’ve ever been the victim of burglary you’ll know that it is an upsetting, stressful and ultimately pretty scary experience and although statistics show that the number of burglaries in the UK has significantly decreased over the past decade, Belvoir Lettings, which has an office on Poole Road in Westbourne, is urging its clients to be as vigilant as ever. Mike Betteridge, owner of Belvoir Poole & Westbourne, says: “We often find that landlords and tenants place less importance on security than homeowners. Sometimes there is confusion over whose responsibility it is, but we always advise that both parties need to take precautionarysteps to ensure security is of the highest level. “I think that people have become a little complacent lately as year on year we hear thatthe number of incidents is decreasing,” he said. “However burglaries are still a very real threat — especially during the summer months when lots of people are on holiday — and so both landlords and tenants need to take steps to increase security. “At Belvoir we take the safety and wellbeing of our tenants and maintenance of our landlords’ properties very seriously and so are always on the other end of the phone to advise them if they have any worries,” he added. Although the risk of a burglary cannot be completely eliminated there are certain steps that landlords and tenants can take to reduce it considerably. Here is a selection of Belvoir’s top tips for both landlords and tenants: • Ensure home security is of a high level – Common sense tells us that households with ‘less than basic’ security are more likely to become victims of burglary than households with ‘enhanced’ home security. Burglars like to operate without forced entry so the first measure you should take is to install dead-bolts on all external doors. Attaching a timer switch on your lights is also advisable as light will give the illusion that there are people in the property. This is especially important if you are experiencing a void period. • Remove the opportunity – Take measures that tell a burglar your property is too difficult or risky to
BD June 2011 page 8
target. Try to avoid; leaving windows open that are easily accessible, letting hedges become overgrown and leaving ladders out after use. These make access to the building far simpler and indicate to a prospective burglar that it’s worth a second look. • Keep all valuables out of sight – You wouldn’t ask someone to mug you in the street so why would you make it simple for a burglar to gain access to your valuables? Burglars are opportunists so if they can see your car keys lying unattended they are more likely to strike. Make sure all valuables are hidden, or even better locked away. • Tell a friend if you are going away – It’s a well known fact that the most likely time you’ll get burgled is when you are on holiday. If your letterbox has an old newspaper sticking out of it or your curtains haven’t been closed for a few days it indicates there is no one home. Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property and to contact the police immediately if they see any suspicious activity. • Keep doors locked at all times – This may seem like an obvious one but often people, especially those who live in flats, only lock the door when they are leaving the property or at night. Thieves can also attack in the day time, and many of them will resort to violence if faced with resistance. • Mark your valuables – Police routinely check recovered stolen items for SmartWater, an invisible fluid that can be used to mark most household items. If your valuables are marked with SmartWater, or UV pen, it increases the likelihood that you will be reunited with your stolen goods. Dorian Gonsalves, managing director of Belvoir says; “Although they aren’t as frequent as they used to be, burglaries do still take place in both rural and urban areas across theUK. Our aim is to look after the welfare of both our landlord and tenant clients, and theproperties they own or live in and so urge them to take precautions and remain vigilant.” Your local Belvoir Letting agent can offer specialist insurance, speak to your closest Belvoir office for more information.

RAC Gives One SouthWest Dealership an Award for its Service Workshop Quality Programme This year, RAC gave only one dealership in the South West of England an award for its Service Workshop Quality Programme; that was Christchurch-based family-run Keith Motors. The award was achieved through quality checks carried out independently by the RAC between January 2010 and January 2011, who arrived unannounced at the Lyndhurst Road dealership and randomly picked any car serviced or repaired that day. Keith Motors received a 100% pass rate on all checks carried out and the audit complies with Ford Motor Company Premium Status. The award was presented to Keith Motors by Ford Motor Company’s southwest regional business manager Andy Sanders to recognise their outstanding achievement. Colin Walker, Keith Motors’ service man ag e r sa id “ It’ s great for Keith Motors to be recognised as the only dealership in the South West to achieve this RAC accolade for our quality servicing – the team work really hard to provide a consistently high level of service and workmanship – well done team!” Robin Webb, dealer principal added “This year has been really good for us – I think that our customers
BD June 2011 page 12
tend to prefer our friendly, family-run feel, especially in these difficult economic conditions. In March, we invited clients and VIP guests to a Ford Focus launch event ahead of the national launch; plus 2011 is Keith Motors’ 60th anniversary, where we are holding further anniversary-themed events throughout the year. To top it all, the RAC accolade awarded for the quality of our servicing is a real achievement and one which our team should be proud of.” Keith Motors of Christchurch is a family run Ford Dealership and has been running for 60 years. The company has been a Ford Dealer since 1980, and offers sales, parts, services, rapid fit and rental. For further information on Keith Motors, go to www.keithmotors.com or call 01425 271371.

June’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs
Fruit
Several of the shrubs that bloom on wood made during the previous year may be pruned as soon as flowers fade.
Inspect apple and pear trees and remove anything that looks bad, the same with strawberries, also making sure there is a good straw mat for fruit.
Climbers and Wall-Plants The half hardy annual climbers that have been raised under glass or protected can now be planted on a south facing wall or fence, well supported.
Roses
Vegetables Several of the less hardy plants can be p lan ted ou t n o w eg. a u b ergin e s, cucumbers, marrows, peppers, tomatoes and sweet corn.
All varieties of garden roses will be coming into bloom this month, fading flowers should be regularly removed to encourage the production of new ones.
Greenhouse and Frame
Borders and Beds
House Plants
As soon as blooms fade on early herbaceous perennials it is best to cut off the dead flower stems. Plant out halfhardy annuals raised under glass as soon as possible.
Leaves of foliage plants will benefit a light fine rain outside for no more than two hours. Watch out for aphids and other pests deal with them without delay.
Bulbs and Corms Remain in g b u lb s from th e sp rin g flowering should be lifted now. Dahlia tubers not yet planted should be put out now and well supported.
On summer days the temperature can rise very rapidly and to keep cool, water floors and benches twice daily.

Rock Gardens and pools Cut back old flower stems and other trailing plants to keep them trim and avoid them seeding. Continue with weeding and remove algae, weekly.
Lawns With our dry spells raise the mower blades to make the cut less close, remove the grass box for the time being. Isolated weeds can be treated again.

Talking about wildlife with
Back to the seas of our grandparents’ days Right now, a network of Marine Protected Areas is being developed around our shores, with protection from the most damaging activities such as gravel extraction and scallop dredging. Most types of fishing, commercial and recreational activity will still be allowed, but there will be some new marine reserves, called Reference Areas, which will be protected from ALL damaging activities, giving them a chance to return to the rich seas of our grandparents’ days. These highly protected Reference Areas, small though they will be, are vital to the success of the network as a whole. They allow wildlife within them to return to a near-natural state, acting as benchmarks for understanding how human activities affect marine life, showing us what a healthy and undamaged sea is like – something we can hardly imagine at the moment. Older Dorset residents remember seeing schools of harbour porpoise from Dorset’s cliffs and catching large angel shark and common skate, both of which are now critically endangered. We hope that by s et t i n g a s id e s om e areas of the sea purely for wildlife we will see a return to the marine environment our greatgrandparents enjoyed. If we are to halt the centuries-long decline in our seas we need to establish Reference
BD June 2011 page 20
Areas that are purely for the recovery of wildlife. They will undoubtedly affect some people who use the sea for their living or recreation and tough decisions will be needed. But if we do nothing, noone will benefit, least of all our local Dorset fishing communities. If we don’t act now there will be very little for our grand-children to enjoy. To find out more about the campaign for M arine Protected Areas, incl udin g Reference Areas, both in Dorset and throughout the UK, visit our website www.wildlifetrusts.org and click on Living Seas. Look out for the Petition Fish campaign this summer at Dorset Wildlife Trust centres and events and sign a scale to show your support for marine wildlife. It’s now or never for the future of our seas!

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.
June Jewel Daisy is a Mastiff cross who is about seven years old. She is a very sweet dog that we rescued from the pound on Christmas Eve. She is full of character and loves to be loved. She has been waiting for the right home since Christmas!
NEW VENUE FOR THE FUN DOG SHOW In the past the annual dog show has been held in Kinson, but due to the closure of the park’s toilets, an alternative venue had to be found. So this year it will be held at the West Parley Memorial Hall and Field, Christchurch Road, West Parley BH22 8SQ. The date will be Saturday June 18th and doors open at 12.30pm but no need to register for classes ahead of time this year. All the usual fun and frolics including a parade of all the re homed dogs of the past (If you have a WT dog, please bring it along) also all the dogs needing homes will be there too. Fabulous food, children’s’ games, super prizes, so what more could you want? Free entry but limited parking so share transport if you can.
For more information call the office on 01202 875000!

Dames, Doctors and Dignitaries Dance About Face at Somerley Ball 400 supporters of locally based head & neck cancer support charity, About Face, danced the night away in a huge marquee at Old Somerley in a sell-out ABOUT FACE BALL on Saturday evening (May 21st). £51,750 was raised for the charity. Dancing to the sound of Lady Marmalade Live, guests mixed it with football legend, Laurie McMenemy, the chief designer for Jaguar Cars (the man responsible for the XF and XJ ranges), Ian Callum, and the Mayor & Mayoress of Poole, Cllr & Mrs Graham Wilson. Entertainer Mike Osman kept the mood light as he hosted the evening and mimicked the famous, whilst former and current patients who have been helped by the cancer support charity shared their experiences with the audience. They were able to stress how the charity tries to counter the isolation people feel when diagnosed with this type of cancer. A high value raffle, where prizes included a week’s stay in a French Gite, raised £9,000. However, the evening’s fundraising high point was a dazzling auction offering, among a range of glittering prizes, the opportunity to secure a fine diamond encrusted bracelet and even the right to be the first person in the UK to own the recently launched Range Rover Evoque – with the profit on the deal going to the charity. Leading the Ball organising team was Regina Ilankovan, a dentist and the wife of charity founding Trustee, Ilanko Ilankovan, a consultant surgeon. One of the prime movers on the voluntary team was Paul Collins, Dealer Principal of Westover Jaguar in Poole. During several short speeches, Dame Margaret Seward, the former Chief Dental Office for the United Kingdom, remarked on the small charity’s leadership in offering, on the one hand, personal support from former patients who can ‘tell it like it is’ and, on the other, its

work by consultant surgeons such as Messrs Ramchandani, Walji and Ilankovan – all working at Poole Hospital – in passing on their skills voluntarily training future head & neck cancer surgeons in the charity’s special practical suite and library in the About Face Centre at Longfleet Road, Poole. About Face Chairman, Dr Anthony Pigott (note spelling) was effusive in his praise of the organising team: “We’ve had a wonderful night that has, by the generosity of the sponsors and guests, enabled About Face to continue its work in Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and across the South”. He said “If you or a loved one has been affected by facial cancer we do everything we can to help”. The About Face Centre number is 01202 677340 and the website can be found at www.about-face.info.
