Hello Bournemouth, We had a great Halloween Party with friends as you can see here. Not only did the children have their faces painted but so did the adults! Personally I think it is an improvement. All a good excuse to let our hair down for an evening! I hope you were able to join in some of the fun too. Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, why not get someone else to clean it, get solar panels fitted, have a bedroom makeover, hang some new doors, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, get a new sofa, hire a hot tub, or just go all out and plan that new conservatory you have been so longing for? Whatever it is we have local people right here in The Bournemouth Directory wanting to help you. There is a full index on page 30 with all that can be found inside. Your continued calls and support of the advertisers really makes all the difference. There are of course other businesses, such as local hotels and restaurants ideal for a Christmas meal out, takeaways, hearing aid experts and a group set up to help you learn to speak better in public. There is also a company to help train you if you have just been made redundant. The lucky winner of The Rat Pack Live tickets was Mrs C Pounder. Well done. This month there is another great prize on offer… a family ticket to see Jack and the Beanstalk at The Pavilion in Bournemouth on 6th December. There is also a reader offer for tickets to the NEC Festive Gift Fair! Be quick to enter those! I hope you have a great month of November. Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

With a Rose in its Paw It’s very easy to walk past Bournemouth’s coat of arms carved in stone on the front of the BIC and hardly notice it - but the complicated heraldic shield there is really well worth a second look. Actually, it’s better if you can find a coloured version, because that’s even more full of meaning. The fact is, when Bournemouth was ‘born’ and given its charter, specially signed by Queen Victoria herself in 1890, someone had the job of thinking up a really posh coat of arms – making it somehow relevant to this brand-new seaside resort of ours. ‘Puchritudo et Salubritas’ is the Latin motto: ‘Beauty and Health’! But what about the rest? Fascinatingly, every item tells a story. There are four quarters, with a lion in the top right and bottom left. He is there to remind us of Bournemouth’s links with royalty. (Lillie Langtry?!) He is ‘rampant’ to tell us he is very watchful – like all coastal towns have to be, in case of attack. Then the birds are ‘martlets’ – sand martins, reminding us of cliff and beach - they also featured on the arms of King Edward the Confessor, who once owned this area. The fish are salmon, to suggest our links with Christchurch and the sea there. At the top there is a pine tree and four roses underneath it (health and beauty again). And the whole thing, in colour, is

BD November 2011 page 6

done in blue and gold, telling us again how blue skies and golden sun and sand are to be found here. But what are those two lions are holding in their paws? This is something hardly anyone notices – but look carefully, and you’ll find each lion is proudly holding a rose. Once more, the message is clear – Bournemouth is beautiful! Heel Strike Running or Forefoot Running? Anyone who runs know the debate about mid foot striking versus heel striking. More and more research is coming out that supports forefoot or midfoot landing. Our ancestors ran for millions of years barefoot using midfoot landing as do many Africans today with little or no foot, ankle and shin problems. In addition lab research analysing running kinetics also demonstrates that there may be less impact and less injuries sustained with fore/ midfoot running. Did you know that over 30% of runners get injured every year? That is quite a lot for a non contact sport! Injuries like knee pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles problems are common problems with runners that interrupt their training for weeks or months. Landing on the heel (often with overstriding) is like applying the brakes and generates huge impact forces. This increases the likelihood you will get injured. Research by Lieberman (2010) shows that runners who forefoot strike have 7 times less impact force on their feet and legs than heel strikers. Anne-Marie Samuel, sports physiotherapist at Body in Motion, explains “Sometimes runners can get away with poor biomechanics for short distances like 5km or 10km. But when they try to increase the distance or intensity, injuries and pain often occur. Should I switch? If you are running well with no problems, do not make any radical changes. However if you are just starting to run or get repeated injuries with running and know you need to improve your biomechanics, make any changes slowly and with patience. Start by getting a video analysis of your gait to identify any biomechanical errors

BD November 2011 page 20

which can be addressed. Sometimes there are other issues with the back, hip or knee that should be addressed before making changes in the feet. Sometimes it is a simple case of a muscle being too tight, too weak or an imbalance which is causing a problem. Many runners think that it is impossible to change their gait and they will always run a certain way. However, the fact is that changes can be made quickly and easily and feel completely natural in 4 -6 weeks. Not only will the pains and injuries disappear, you will get faster running times with better alignment. If there has been a history of injuries, the runner may require physiotherapy to treat the injury so the runner can commence their programme again. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2011 – MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2012 After spectacularly breaking box office records with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 2009, and following the overwhelming success of ‘Cinderella’ last year - UK Productions brings you a giant pro duc ti o n o f ‘ J a ck a nd th e Beanstalk’, this year’s Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. Make sure the whole family is full of beans this Christmas and follow the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street), the boy who manages to sell the family’s only valuable possession, Daisy the Cow, for a handful of beans (and they weren’t even Heinz!). He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies

BD November 2011 page 24

star and Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis, the Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, and his long-suffering mother Dame Trott played hilariously by one of the country’s top panto dames, Nick Wilton better known as Mr Lister from Eastenders. Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. It’s a giant of a pantomime…don’t miss it!

Barry’s marathon bid wins backing of water company A BID by a Dorset man to mark his 60th birthday by running 60 marathons in 60 weeks has won the backing of his water supply company. Barry Light, who turns 60 on December 22, plans to raise £60,000 for charity by running five world, 15 European and 40 UK-based marathons. Money raised will go to six charities Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, W e s s e x A u t i s ti c S o c i ety , M o sa i c , WaterAid and TeamPB, a collaboration of prostate cancer and breast cancer care. Now Sembcorp Bournemouth Water (SBW) has thrown its weight behind his challenge by agreeing to act as a sponsor. Other companies have also been urged to sign up as supporters. Roger Harrington, SBW’s Managing Director, said: “Barry has set himself a tough target, but one which I am sure he will achieve. “It is great that he will be supporting WaterAid. The charity will use the money he raises to further its excellent work in providing water and sanitation in parts of the world where people have very little in the way of basic services. “We are pleased to support Barry and wish him every success in his challenging venture.” A keen runner, and member of Littledown Harriers running club, Barry has already successfully completed 27 marathons to date with a best time of 3:28:49 in the 2008 London Marathon.

BD November 2011 page 26

As preparation for his challenge he ran seven marathons in eight weeks last year, five of which were consecutive. He has also been nominated to carry the Olympic Flame during the Bournemouth leg of the London 2012 Olympic torch relay. Paying tribute to SBW, and his other sponsors, Barry said: “I'm delighted to have a high profile company such as Sembcorp Bournemouth Water and other companies sponsoring my challenge. However, I'm going to need all the help I can get, so I would urge others who would also like to offer support to contact me. “SBW continuously support the work of WaterAid, my international charity. Water is an essential element of my marathon running, but to the world's poorest people, essential to life. I would ask everyone to give generously to all my charities.” For mor e in fo r mation on Bar ry ’s marathon bid, and to read his blog, go to www.60in60at60.com.
