First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Michael French, Projects Coordinator at Grounded Community, said: “We are very grateful to the Trust for investing in our community and supporting our work. Grants like the one provided by the Talbot Village Trust enable us to focus on our spaces and make them more user-friendly and accommodating.

The Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space provides shelter from the rain for the volunteers, local women’s group Safe and Sound and nature play parents, while also giving them a space to make and enjoy refreshments. The students from neighbouring schools will also be making use of the charity’s new educational garden resource.

The educational charity has used the grant to create an Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space at The Secret Garden in the grounds of St Clements Church in Boscombe. The match funded donation was put towards purchasing materials for the timber-framed structure with skylight roof panels, kitchen units, a hob, pizza oven and a barbecue, with the remainder invested in garden maintenance and water irrigation.

“We spacemealsthreealreadyhavehostedcommunityinthenewandplanto hold more monthly events throughout the year. At one of these events alone, we had 75 people and cooked 49 pizzas in our new pizza oven.”

Three community meals hosted to date at new Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space Talbot Village Trust, a local grant giving charity that supports worthy causes across south east Dorset, has donated £14,400 to Bournemouth charity Grounded Community to help continue its work supporting and educating local people in food-growing.

Granted charity status in 2020, Grounded Community currently has around 140 volunteers and nine part-time staff members to run foodgrowing workshops, set people up in their homes and train volunteers. In addition, Grounded Community runs a surplus food box scheme to aid lowincome households with supermarket surplus and garden produce. Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you ﬁnd the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Introduction and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add golden-browna colour to the cooked chicken and help to thicken the sauce. 2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until goldenbrown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Now finely chop the shallot and add to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.

4. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry them for 3-5 minutes.

5. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

YMCA Bournemouth has announced its ‘Sleep Easy’ fundraising events, which encourage members of the public to adopt a homeless lifestyle for one night, have raised £211,000 since launching in 2016.

Last year, YMCA Bournemouth housed and supported more than 170 individuals and provided more than 53,000 meals for vulnerable adults. The charity’s services have proven a lifeline for many in the county, with the Office for National Statistics recently reporting that more than 350 households in Dorset are homeless or at risk of YMCAhomelessness.Bournemouth is encouraging local communities to “Sleep rough to support those who are finding it tough!”

Main events sponsor, Lester Aldridge Solicitors has raised more than £15,000 over the last four years, through multiple group events and individual staff sleeping rough to contribute their support to the cause.

YMCA Bournemouth also hosts a ‘Big Sleep Easy’ event every year, with its next scheduled for 15th October 2022 to inspire simultaneous efforts. Over the past three years, the ‘Big Sleep Easy’ has seen donations total £79,000. All funds raised are used by YMCA Bournemouth to help those in need achieve independent living and secure a safe and positive long-term future.

Airship Orchestra Comes to Bournemouth for European Premiere

Created by ENESS, a multi award-winning art and technology studio led by Nimrod Weis, the custom light installation comprises 16 inflatables – some up to six metres – extending over a 500 square metre area. It is manifest as a mystical tribe of otherworldly characters beamed from the night stars, with glowing skin and voices like stardust. Visitors are beckoned inside the formation to bathe in volumetric sound and rhythmic light pulsation. The installation of this world class artwork in Bournemouth is yet another confirmation of the town’s burgeoning status as an international hub for culture. The Co-op Local Community Fund has raised a £1,200 for Diverse Abilities’ STARs service, with two months of fundraising remaining.

Co-op members raise £1,200 for the siblings!

STARs is the charity’s support and advice service for siblings of children with special education needs. It’s a 12-week programme for children aged eight to 16, meeting on Thursday evenings between 4.30pm and The6.30pm.charity aims to reduce pressure the siblings are under by providing an environment where they can access support and advice, but also take part in fun activities, make friends, and be themselves. Clare Rochford, manager of STARs, commented: “It’s tough being an SEN sibling, as well as the usual challenges of growing up, they also often receive less attention from parents and have more worries and responsibilities than their peers. “It’s important to provide an opportunity that enables young people to realise they are not alone, hopefully giving them a support network which will last far longer than the time they attend our sessions, as being a sibling never ends.”

STARs continues to be one of the Co-op Local Community Fund charities until Saturday, October 22, 2022, where 2p in every £1 spent by Co-op members is deposited into an account that is split equally between the Local Community Fund and the Community Partnerships Fund. More than £84million has been raised for over 25,000 causes since 2016. Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).

The Autumn Equinox on 23rd September marks when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which nights start to become longer than days.

1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs.
