Dear Christchurch, Wow it is December! Surprisingly I am more ready this year than ever before Edition 52 which is very unusual for me. We had a lovely trip up North to visit the family for a Christening and I managed to get all of their presents and leave them up there! I can now concentrate on home and more immediate family. Beauty and the Beast At Regent Centre, Christchurch from 22nd – 29th January 2011 Marking their 40th anniversary in 2011, the awardwinning Highcliffe Charity Players present their first production for 15 years of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, running over ten performances at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, from 22nd to 29th January 2011. Latterly well know through Disney’s animated film and stage musical, this classic fairytale tells of a kindly monster (in reality a transformed handsome prince) and his love for a beautiful young girl. But David Swan’s imaginative script offers a delicious new twist to this enchanting story. Set firmly in ‘panto land’, there’s a magical Fairy, traditional Dame, good and evil Princes and even two dimwitted traffic wardens, Nosey Parker and Kirby Crawler. Not forgetting Gigi, the pantomime horse. HCP’s Beauty and the Beast once again showcases the Company’s celebrated panto ingredients sumptuous sets and costumes and great song and dance routines, combined with the usual happy quota of knockabout humour and audience participation. Directing her first panto is HCP member Shelley Gould, who has teamed up with Cara Bowen, an American professional performer/choreographer/ teacher who is making her panto choreographic debut. 16-year-old Coral Norton takes on her first principal role as Bonnie (Beauty) and former ballroom and Latin champion 20-year-old Lee McGowan, makes his HCP debut as the good Prince Casper, (turned into the Beast). Playing Dame for the first time is David Coward, while another company stalwart, Malcolm George, plays the bad Prince Jasper.
and other local parents. Our first show, Robinson Crusoe, was staged at St. Mark’s Hall in Highcliffe in 1972. By 1986, our growing audiences demanded a bigger venue and we moved to the Regent Centre, where we have happily appeared every year since. “Charity Players have now performed over 70 productions, including most of the major pantomimes, acclaimed musicals (recently Mack & Mabel) and a string of entertaining revues. I am proud that, thanks to the wonderful support of our audiences, we have been able to raise tens of thousands of pounds for local charities”. Beauty and the Beast runs at the Regent Centre for ten performances from Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th January 2011 – including three matinees and two popular Teatime Shows (at 5.30pm) when audiences can meet the cast after the performance. As usual, profits from the show will be donated to charity. Tickets (£8 -12) are on sale both at the Regent Centre Box Office (01202 499199) and online: www.regentcentre.co.uk/panto. For further information: www.highcliffecharityplayers.com.
Pete Whitaker, Kim Doyle and Jane Melling are Widow Bonbon’s kids Sherbet, Candy and Flossy, Stephen Hutt and Paul Beecroft play the dopey traffic wardens, Marcus White is Bonnie’s father Dr Tootle and Valerie Gillard is Fairy Rosé. “It’s wonderful that we celebrate our 40th anniversary in the same year that the Regent Centre - where we have presented pantos and musicals for the past 25 years - celebrates its 80th anniversary”, says HCP Chairman, Georgina Smith. “Charity Players was formed in 1971 by my late father-in-law Tony Smith (HCP’s renowned Dame for 25 years)

Sparkling students hang winning bauble to launch local Christmas Tree competition Two students from the Victoria Education Centre and Sports College (VEC) in Poole, hung a very special decorative bauble on a pine tree in the forest at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood, on 26th November. The bauble is one of 10 being placed locally by the Forestry Commission to launch this year’s Christmas tree sales. Five of these distinctive golden baubles can be found at Moors Valley Country Park and a further five within the New Forest. All bear the distinctive Forestry Commission logo, and any member of the public lucky enough to find one will be entitled to win a Christmas Tree. The Forestry Commission donated a Christmas tree to VEC in 2009 to mark the launch of the Centre’s Sparkle Appeal. The Appeal aims to raise £5 million to provide a new hydrotherapy pool and therapy centre at the school, which specialises in providing care and therapy for pupils aged 3-19 years, affected by a range of physical disabilities. This year the students returned the favour by hanging the first lucky bauble in the forest in return for their Christmas tree which took pride of place at the Sparkle Christmas Fair on 27th November. Libby Burke, Forestry Commission Communications Manager said, “2010 is the 500th anniversary of the first decorated Christmas Tree, and
CD December 2010 page 8
whilst the Latvian merchants chose to decorate with roses back in 1510, we thought our special Christmas baubles would stand out rather better in the forest environment. We are delighted that Sam 7, and Nick 18, from VEC could launch the competition for us and look forward to meetin g the 10 lu cky winners.” Christmas Trees are now on sale at Moors Valley Country Park daily from 10 – 4pm until December 19th. Forestry Commission trees are also on sale at New Park, near Brockenhurst. The next Sparkle event is a Carol Service, which takes place at 6pm on December 15th in St Aldhelm’s Church, Branksome. For more information on any of this year’s Christmas events at Moors Valley contact the Rangers on 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk. What is a Living Will, What Does it Include and Who Should Make One? A Living Will, sometimes called an advance decision or directive, should clearly indicate your specific wish to refuse all or some medical treatment during an illness or at the end of your life. It cannot be used to request medical treatment. Under current UK law you have the right to decide what type of medical treatment you want to have, or, the right to refuse it. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 came into force in 2007 and forms the legal basis for advance decisions. A valid advance decision must: • be made by a person aged 18 or over who has the mental capacity to do so • set out the treatment to be refused • indicate the circumstances in which this refusal would apply
not have to be currently undergoing medical treatment to make an advance decision, as they tend to deal specifically with end of life treatment and care. Contact our Private Client Team if you would like to discuss this further - we offer a free, no obligation, initial meeting to explain what needs to be done and then it is your choice how to proceed." Frettens Solicitors offices in New Milton and Christchurch are full of enthusiastic people with personality and strong experience who provide a full range of specialised legal services to private and business clients. Visit www.frettens.co.uk for further information. Lee Young, head of the Private Client Team at Frettens Solicitors
• there must have been no influence by any other person • not have been modified either verbally or in writing since it was made. An advance directive cannot be used to: • ask for your life to be ended • nominate another party to decide on treatment on your behalf • force doctors to act unprofessionally. Lee Young heads the Private Client Team at Frettens Solicitors and draws up Living Wills for clients. He says "A Living Will must be a true reflection of your wishes and must also make clear that the person making it is mentally competent. You do

“Mattie Chitzmats” - By Glenn A. Hascall My next door neighbour was a prune. I don’t mean any disrespect, but she really looked like a four-and-ahalf foot prune. I don’t have a picture of her but the two closest descriptions of her I can give is either a prune or ET’s grandmother. I really am not trying to be disrespectful! I remember her in the fondest of terms. We called her Granny. If she went by any other name I never knew it or have long since forgotten it. She kept mostly to herself and would often be seen with a walking stick in hand carrying her wrinkled body through neighbourhood alleys. Her granddaughter (in her 70’s) spoke a little English and told us that Granny had come from Mexico in her late 70’s after her husband passed away and had stopped celebrating her birthday at 97 (which had been some years before I knew her). Most people stayed away from Granny. Not only was she very old, but she didn’t speak English and wore a variety of tattered clothes. This grandmother several times

over helped raise several generations of younguns’. There would come a time when Granny would find herself alone. And when she was, my mother would make a little extra at suppertime and my sister I would take it over to Granny’s house. Granny would never come to the door although she might occasionally pull back a curtain and peer through the window at us, her eyes partially hidden by the flowing wrinkles on her face. So we learned to leave the meal on her doorstep and knock. Once we were a safe distance away we would see her hand reach outside the door and the plate and its contents would disappear inside. The next morning we would hear a knock on our front door, by the time we got there Granny was gone, but she left behind a clean plate with a stack of homemade tortillas still warm from the pan. Soon it became a neighbourly ritual; we would supply her supper and she made sure we were never without fresh tortillas. Granny would never let us actually thank her or even talk to her, but she

13 understood what my family was doing and she appreciated it and even without words she let us know of her gratitude. One Christmas, after we had read Luke, chapter two, opened presents and were enjoying the holiday, I heard the doorbell ring. I didn’t suspect Granny because she always knocked. When I reached the front door I had to look down and I saw a short, toothless, wrinkled lady grinning from ear to ear. She held out a plate of Christmas Tamales and said, “Mattie Chitzmats”. I was so startled to hear Granny speak that her very broken English words didn’t register right away. By the time I realized that she had personally wished my family a Merry Christmas she was backing away, waving and grinning. This beautiful, wonderful, toothless prune of a granny had shared Christmas cheer with my family. As I recall those were the only two words I ever heard Granny say, but her life spoke volumes. And in that moment of Christmas cheer I came to realize the arrival of our Saviour Jesus Christ continues to leave a lasting impression on

regular people. He didn’t come just for those of us who speak English. He didn’t come just for those who attend church in their very best clothing. He didn’t come just for those who had a particular colour of skin. He didn’t even come just for those who were wrinkle-free. He came for me. He came for you. And He came for Granny. A smooth skinned baby and a wrinkled old woman. This, my friends, is the story of a Christmas past and the best Christmas present. Mattie Chitzmats to all and to all – Jesus Christ. By Glenn A. Vegetables Time for your seeds to be ordered before Christmas. Some vegetables in open g ro u n d w o u l d b e n e f it f ro m s om e protection.
Greenhouse and Frame Glass needs washing and disinfectant applied. Insulation should be done. This will obviously cut down costs for working greenhouses.
House Plants Be careful not to water too much, it is easy to make the compost too soggy so the roots would then lack air, ideal temps are from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Lawns If ground is not wet or sticky spiking to improve aeration can be carried out, during mild weather, a sprinkling of sharp sand can be good also.

New Forest Children’s Choir crowned “BBC Children’s Choir of the Year 2010” The Christchurch based, New Forest Children’s Choir competed against three other children’s choirs in the Category Finals of the BBC Choir of the Year competition 2010 at Birmingham Symphony Hall on 6th November 2010 and won. Over 2000 choirs took part in the area selection stage across the four categories; Children’s Choir, Youth Choir, Adult Choir and Open Category. The winners of the area selection stages were put through to the National Selection stage and from that stage four choirs from each of the four categories were selected to compete in the Category Finals. The other three finalists in the children’s category were Inverclyde Schools’ Junior Choir, Warwickshire County Boy’s Choir and Westminster Boys’ Choir. Musical Director and conductor Alison Russell-Hayward said “We’re tiny in comparison to the competition and to get to this point is absolutely extraordinary. The children are incredible and I do love the challenge of channelling their energy and enthusiasm. We have done some big venues, but there’s been a big build up to this and we’re honoured to be representing the whole of the South of England.” The choir has also recently learned that ‘John Rutter’ has chosen to be ‘Patron’ of The New Forest Children’s Choir which is also a great honour. The choir were thrilled with the judges’ comments at the area selection stage which praised their musicality, great

choral discipline, focus, movement and energy • “A beautiful sound – smiling faces, clear tone and exquisitely clear words”. • “So focused as a performance that it really touched us”. The choir for boys and girls aged from 4 to 14 years old has an interesting and varied performance programme ranging from classical choral singing including works by John Rutter to traditional gospel and songs from the musicals. In addition to their competition wins, the choir regularly performs at local charitable and community events. For further information and interviews please contact Alison Russell-Hayward.
