Cllr Peter Hall to be the next deputy mayor of Christchurch Cllr Peter Hall, the Liberal Democrat ward councillor for Christchurch Town Centre, has been elected to serve as the deputy mayor of the ancient borough for 2011/12 and then as mayor in 2012/13. Cllr Hall, who is now 71, was born and brought up in Mudeford, attending Mudeford Infants and Junior Schools before going to Christchurch Secondary Modern School (now Twynham School). After leaving school he served a five-year apprenticeship in toolmaking with Vickers Armstrong Ltd (later British Aircraft Corporation) at Hurn Airport. After a few years toolmaking he transferred to the design office as a draughtsman and worked on a number of aircraft, including Concorde. After 14 years he left to take a contract with Israel Aircraft Industries as senior design draughtsman, designing various parts for the reconfigured Mirage, then worked in Amsterdam on the European Airbus.

member of Christchurch Sailing Club and it was through his interest in sailing that he met his wife Sally. They married in 1962 and have three children. Before being elected to the Borough Council in 1995 in the Portfield ward he was chairman of the Christchurch Citizen’s Association. He is also chairman of Christchurch Commoners Association, responsible for the management and husbandry of nearly 100 acres of local land. In 1997 he was elected to Dorset County Council. Cllr Hall said: “I would like to thank all the members of the Council for their crossparty support, which I find rather overwhelming. I feel it is a great honour and privilege to be the deputy mayor elect. I will work to the best of my ability to serve the residents of our ancient borough.”

On returning to the UK, having decided on a career change, he did a degree course in Design & Technology at King Alfred’s College, Winchester leading to a B.Ed. degree and then taught design and technology in secondary education in Bournemouth before retiring. He is a keen sportsman, having p lay ed footb all for Mu d eford Football Club for many years, as well as playing tennis and cricket. He is a

Food Festival Education Trust primary school cookery days begin The first in a series of Christchurch primary school cookery days run by Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust has taken place at Somerford Primary Community School. All seven primary schools in the Borough will be visited by Food Festival President Mary Reader with a team of local chefs to show the children some healthy recipes and, in some of the schools, getting them to cook for themselves. Sainsbury’s are sponsoring the cookery days by providing all the food that is needed for the demonstrations and the children’s own cookery. All of the recipes presented at the schools will tie in with the themes and countries which the pupils are studying as part of their curriculu m. At Somerford School, for example, the children are studying the theme of water and the country of Egypt. The recipes which they cooked were a fish ta gin e accompanied by a cucumber feta salsa. Mary Reader, who is also a trustee of the Education Trust, said: “Not only is it important for u s to sh o w t h e children some healthy

ideas when it comes to presenting the recipes, but we also make sure that everything is relevant to what they are studying. That has presented us with some interesting challenges this year as the countries of study range from Ghana to the Antarctic! “We’re delighted that Sainsbury’s have come on board to help us out with providing all of the food.” Geraldine Staples from Sainsbury’s in Lyndhurst Road said: “Being local we like to help the community and we’re glad we are able to help all of the schools in the Borough with the excellent work that is being carried out by the Food Festival Education Trust. Having visited Somerford School I can see just how much the children get out of these cookery days.”

Talking about wildlife with

Frogs & Toads Frogs and toads are our most common amphibians, widely found throughout Britain. They bear a close physical resemblance, but can be distinguished by several features. Frogs have a smooth, moist skin and long legs designed for leaps and jumps, whereas toads have a drier, “warty” skin and shorter legs, crawling being their preferred way of moving about. Frogs are more varied in colour, ranging from shades of green and brown to grey and yellow, whilst toads are generally dark brown. Providing the weather is warm enough, frogs and toads emerge from their wintering quarters as early as January to breed in ponds. Male frogs make sure they are the first to arrive and emit a low purring croak to attract a mate. Frogs lay their eggs in clumps, covered in protective jelly-like substance, whereas toads’ eggs are laid out in long strings.

The females lay thousands of eggs, but only a few survive to adulthood as spawn and tadpoles are extremely vulnerable. Tadpoles develop in stages in a process known as metamorphosis, and emerge as adults after a few months. Those that survive can live for up to eight years in the wild. The toads’ survival odds are slightly better due to toxins produced by the glands in their skin, making them unpalatable to some predators. Both frogs and toads feed on insects, slugs and worms, caught with their long tongues. Frogs, who can breathe through their skin, spend the majority of their lives in or near water, whereas toads are more terrestrial. February’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs There is still time to plant trees and shrubs if the task has not been already completed. Making sure the holes are dug big enough and deep enough for the root ball, also taking in consideration to use a good tree and shrub compost. Climbers and Wall-Plants Species and cultivars of Clematis that flower Summer & Autumn on new shoots made in the current season will benefit from a hard prune now. Roses The main pruning of bush and standard Roses should be carried out between the middle of the month and late March. Borders and Beds During mild spells weeds will start to grow. Deal with them as soon as they appear as they will be easier to remove. Bulbs and Corms Dahlia tubers in store for the Winter should be inspected to make sure that they are healthy and plump. Any bad patches should be cut away with a clean and sharp knife and dipped in Sulphur. Rock Gardens and Pools All leaves should have been removed by now. Mild spells may bring weeds & slugs, remove weeds while small and treat the slugs with slug bait (with suitable containers sunken in the ground, beer is a good tip.)

Fruit There is still time for both planting and pruning but try to complete task before new growth starts. Vegetables Seed potatoes should be removed from their bags and set to sprout in trays or shallow boxes (shed or greenhouse). Greenhouse and Frame Greenhouse should have been sterilized. Carnations and Chrysanthemums can be propagated from cuttings 55-60f (13-15c). Give free ventilation except on cold nights. House Plants Plants at home, particularly flowering on es n eed lots of ligh t an d free ventilation not stuck between blinds or curtains kept out of drafts and be careful not to over water, just damp. Always check how your plant looks. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Lawns There is still time to lay turf for a new lawn or to repair an old one. Not a good tip to lay in muddy or icy conditions.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Could I be your valentine? My name is Draco and I am a v er y hands om e Rot tw ei ler / Doberman cross, about 18 months old. I wouldn’t be here at all if Waggy Tails Rescue hadn’t sent a van up to the Pound I was in and collected me and some of my friends. We were all about to be put to sleep on Christmas Eve! But now we all have a second chance and, although they have brought me to a lovely foster home - I would really like someone special to love. I love people, but am not so keen on other dogs (and don’t mention the C. A. T word!). As you can see, I am a big, strong boy so need a big home with a large garden, or better still, some land which I could guard for you when I am not charging around! I have been well looked after (my previous owners neutered me and I am also microchipped) and, despite my size, I do love to be cuddled. Could I cuddle you please? For more information on Draco and his friends, please phone 01202 875000!
