Christchurch Mayor reenacts raising of New Zealand flag to commemorate coronation centenary The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Sue Spittle, has reenacted the raising of the New Zealand flag which took place 100 years ago to commemorate the coronation of King George V on 22 June 1911. According to a report in the Christchurch Times of the day, the then Mayor, Robert Druitt, hoisted the flag outside the Town Hall with “the hope that the unique remembrance may be symbolical of the glorious bond of Empire which cements the Colonies with the Mother Country.” Times have changed, but the bond between Christchurch in Dorset and its namesake in New Zealand is still as strong. Following news of the devastating earthquake in its twin town earlier this year, citizens of the Dorset town set about raising money and signing books of condolence. More than £4700 was raised with almost 1,000 people signing the books of condolence, which will now be sent to the Mayor of Christchurch, New Zealand. Christchurch Twinning Association also raised more than £2,300 from an auction held at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel. These funds will be sent to the Christchurch Sister City Association in New Zealand. Dr Howard Piper, Chairman of Christchurch Twinning Association, visited New Zealand in March and was in Christchurch just after the earthquake. He mentioned the raising of the flag in 1911 and has now been sent a New Zealand flag

CD July 2011 page 6

by the Christchurch Civic Offices. The Chairman of the Sister City Committee asked if their twin town could raise the flag to mark the centenary. Howard Piper said: “Our twin town of Christchurch New Zealand is having an extremely difficult time. Following the earthquakes on 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011, there have been 7000 aftershocks. The Christchurch NZ press now refer to the stress levels being similar to those experienced in a war zone. “I am sure that re-enacting the raising of their flag will show that we are thinking of them and praying for them at this time.” On raising the flag the Mayor said: “I hope that this ceremony helps to cement the ties that bind us across the world and the books of condolence that we are sending let them see that so many people here feel strongly about the difficult situation in which they find themselves.”

Chris Packham’s wildlife photography arrives at Moors Valley Country Park A collection of stunning wildlife photographs by lifelong naturalist, broadcaster and author Chris Packham is on display at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood from 16 July – 28 August. Familiar to 4 million viewers across the UK as the new presenter of BBC’s Springwatch, Chris is known internationally as one of the world’s most inventive wildlife photographers. His stated mission is to infuse the world of wildlife photography with a little more artistic content and his images portray the overwhelming and simple beauty of the natural world. “We are really looking forward to hosting Chris’s wildlife photography exhibition,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger. “Anyone who has seen Chris on Springwatch will be aware of his affinity with the natural world. “At Moors Valley we want to encourage more people to get out and about and enjoy our local countryside and we know our visitors are going to be really inspired by his work.” Unlike many of the major photography exhibitions that take place at Moors Valley, Chris Packham’s images are for sale and may be bought and taken home that same day. The exhibition is open every day from 9am – 5pm. There is no entrance fee but parking charges do apply.

Why not check it out before you visit? For more information go to the website www.moors-valley.co.uk or call the Rangers on 01425 470721.

In 1997 a group of Mudeford residents got together on the edge of Christchurch Harbour and dreamed up a scheme to bring the community together to have fun, focus on the arts and provide an arts festival for visitors and locals. Since then, Mudeford Arts Festival, a relaxed, loose-knit, informal group has: • Put on art exhibitions in a variety of venues in and around Mudeford • Built a wood henge in the harbour • Made a maze on the green • Dressed the well in rainbow decorations • Decorated and raffled a Mini • Placed a sea monster in the mud • Filled a Routemaster bus with arts and crafts • Held drumming workshops • Created T-shirt masterpieces with children • Decked a marquee with bunting, flowers and artworks • Collated a local history exhibition • Hosted art workshops • Provided boats for kids to paint • Staged music, spoken word and poetry readings • Created a mural on the Bure bridge • Made giant liquorice allsorts • Built a giant mermaid • Created environmental art and more...

Mudeford Arts Festival plans a pair of marquees filled with artworks by local artists, surrounded by an artists’ market, selling local artisanal arts, crafts, food and drink, complemented by workshops, activities for families and children such as origami, zorbing, a mini train, performance pod with music, drumming poetry, dancing, puppets and much else besides. Refreshments available include a hog roast, ice cream wagon, cupcakes, and more. We invite local artists, craftspeople and performers to get in touch and get involved. Bring the family and friends. Swan around all day; Saturday 11-8, Sunday 11-4. Dudes who dress up get discounts! www.MudefordArtsFestival.org For more information call the Festival office on 01425 279167 or 01425 273993.

To keep it free to visitors (three thousand last year), we hold a series of entertaining fund raising events throughout the year. as well as applying for a range of sponsorships. This year the theme is “Swan Down to Mudeford” on 30th and 31st July on Mudeford Quay, Picnic Green.

Locked up at the Red House A new exhibition that unlocks the history of locks & keys A new exhibition at the Red House Museum promises to unlock the mystery of locks and keys. You just won’t want to forget your key again! Brian Morland, the curator of the History of Locks Museum said, “Locks and keys are to most people mysterious objects. We put all our trust and faith into them everyday when we lock the front door or lock our cars. Few of us are aware of the mechanical forces that have been activated.”

lock from the Georgian period, bankers change key locks and time locks, sliding and screw key padlocks from the Far East, and not forgetting, the Roman bronze keys from the 2nd - 3rd century. The exhibition will run until Saturday 30 July 2011. The Red House Museum is open Tuesday – Friday 10.00am – 5.00pm and Saturday 10.00am – 4.00pm. Admission to the Museum is Free.

Brian’s fascination for locks and keys started when he began rummaging about in his father’s workshop for discarded locks. His father, who was a local locksmith, inspired him to investigate locks from the past. “I started to examine and repair broken springs and also made up missing keys. Soon I had a good grasp of the technical side of things, and before long I had amassed my own collection of specimens.” The exhibition which opens on Saturday 25 June showcases the history of locks and keys. Items include the Davis dispatch box

July’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services

WATCH OUT FOR THE BUGS! Trees and Shrubs Some shrubs which flower mainly from one-year-old wood such as Philadelphius and Deutzia may continue to bloom into July. They should be pruned after flowering.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Hybrids that bloom in spring and summer, if cut back will bloom again.

Roses The chief task at present is to remove faded blooms, cut back to good strong bud and remove all suckers from root stock. Continue to feed with rose fertilizer.

Borders and Beds

Lawns Continue with regular mowing, water if necessary. Treat any remaining weeds with a suitable lawn weedkiller. Give a dressing of lawn fertilizer, if not already done.

Fruit Apples and pears in restricted forms such as cordons need summer pruning. Strawberry plants that have finished fruiting should be cleaned and tidied.

Vegetables Outdoor tomatoes grown on single stem must be tied to a stake as single growth progresses. In warm humid weather watch out for an attack of blight in potatoes.

Greenhouse and Frame On summer days the temperature can rise very rapidly and to keep cool, water floors and benches twice daily.

Make a regular practice of removing dead flowers to prevent seed, this helps to channel energy into more blooms. Lavender flowers should be cut before they expand, if drying.

House Plants

Bulbs and Corms

Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Any remaining tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and bulbous irises may now also be lifted, for summer plants if space is needed.

Rock Gardens and pools Trailers can be cut back to control growth, after flowering. Keep pools filled by replacing water lost by evaporation. This helps debris come to the surface for removal.

CD July 2011 page 20

Continue to water and feed plants as necessary. Keep atmosphere moist around plants with bowls or pans of water near the plants.

Success spurs Farley & Thompson to sponsor a second year of Priory House Art Exhibition As a result of the success of the 2010 event Bournemouth stockbrokers Farley & Thompson are again sponsoring Christchurch Arts Guild in the staging of their 2011 annual open Art exhibitions at Priory House, Christchurch between the 6th and 20st August. The Preview/ Opening event is on Saturday 6th August. While markets for both parties are prone to fluctuation this is a very significant and welcome measure of support to the Guilds standing in the East Dorset, New Forest and West Hampshire areas and a reflection of confidence shown by F&T in introducing the guild’s work to its client base and a wider audience. Admission is only 30p and the exhibition is open daily to the public – there is art for everyone and visitors can enter a competition to win one of the exhibits. Senior Partner Colin Chalkley-Maber remarks "We are delighted to support the Christchurch Arts Guild as sponsors for the second time this summer. The standard of work on view last year was very impressive and prompted F&T to purchase for the business with further sales going to other colleagues who attended. This year we will also be presenting a Farley & Thompson award for the painting we feel stands out on merit.” Chairman of the guild, Bob Mackinnon adds,” If success breeds success we are very pleased that this is reflected in Farley & Thompson’s renewed sponsorship for 2011. All activities of the guild have gone up a notch over the last year with the

CD July 2011 page 22

enthusiasm of both demonstrators and active artists to produce some exceptional work,” New website: www.christchurchartsguild.org Examples of the work both Colin ChalkleyMaber and Bob Mackinnon refer to can be seen on the Guild’s impressive new website. Managed by committee member Doug Hart, artist’s individual galleries have already produced sales and the ‘hit’ rate is climbing rapidly. All the Guilds news is entered there including a recent impromptu visit by celebrity Peter Andre to our Furzey Gardens exhibition.

WHAT’S ON AT THE REGENT? Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen Friday 15 July 7:30pm Probably the greatest test of an artist’s success is his durability. For over 50 years Kenny Ball has flown the flag for his particular brand of traditional jazz all over the world. It is a tribute to his stamina and musical integrity that Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen are as popular today as they were back in 1960 when they had their first chart hit with Samantha. From that time on, hit after hit came pouring out until the final tally was fourteen Top 30 records, eclipsing even Kenny’s idol, the great Louis Armstrong’s total – an achievement which has never been equalled by any other jazz artist. Midnight In Moscow was a top two hit in both the UK and the USA. The band’s popularity was further enhanced by their four year spells on The Morecambe and Wise Show and Saturday Night at the Mill, both of which were viewed by millions. Kenny is identified with great jazz, but also wonderful entertainment. Kenny, like Louis Armstrong, believes in making jazz attractive to everyone. His records continue to sell in the hundreds of thousands.

Bridesmaids (15) Sun 17 – Thurs 21 July 7:30pm Matinees: Mon 18 & Thurs 21 2:30pm If you enjoyed The Hangover Parts 1 and 2, this is for you! This is a romcom with attitude that takes Wedding Crashers for its inspiration and leaves it in its wake. Kristen Wiig is Annie, single, working behind a store counter and in a relationship with no future. Then her oldest friend, Lillian, announces she is tying the knot. Not only is the groom to die for, but his sister, Helen, leaves Annie in the shade. Who will be Lillian’s Maid of Honour?! What follows is the wedding planner’s nightmare. There’s the food poisoning episode at the bridal boutique. Then there’s a severe case of fear of flying – at 30,000 feet. In amongst all the matrimonial mayhem, Jill Clayburgh gives her final performance as Annie’s eccentric mum. Bridesmaids is a hilarious grossout gag fest. Sex & The City on steroids! Contains very strong language, strong sex references and crude humour.

Highcliffe Charity Players (A) Sunday 31 July 7:30pm

Hell Freezes Over Tour 2011 The Eagles Complete DVD Show 1994 faithfully reproduced live on stage by this fabulous six piece ensemble. How will we ever forget those immortal words spoken by Glen Frey in 1994? “For the record we never broke up … we just took 14 year vacation”….. When The Eagles reformed after breaking up in 1980 and embarked on their spellbinding Hell Freezes Over tour, that included both old favourites and brand new songs, it was if they had never been away. Desperado make a welcome return this year performing their take on that very same show faithfully recreating the tour that was so successful it out-grossed any other rock tour in any year previously. Surely a testament to the undeniable talent of one of the greatest rock acts ever to grace the stage.

Are You Joking? An evening of music, dance and comedy Marking its 40th anniversary year, the award winning Highcliffe Charity Players, one of Dorset’s most celebrated and versatile amateur groups, returns to the Regent Centre for one night only with an evening of music, dance and comedy. Are You Joking? showcases a range of musical medleys – both old favourites and current musical numbers – performed alongside a variety of hilarious comic sketches from the likes of Norman Wisdom and The Two Ronnies. The Players’ regular forays into revue are legendary, slick, innovative and highly entertaining, and this fast moving, laughter packed show promises to be another popular, fun evening – tuneful, exuberant and a little bit risqué!

Kilimanjaro Challenge for Jigsaw Appeal The Jigsaw Appeal is a £1.5 million appeal to transform the Women’s Health Unit at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital, a unit which desperately needs your support to bring about a better experience for patients and their families. Because I’ve had family and friends fall victim to similar conditions (and because I love a challenge), I’ve decided to climb Mt Kilimanjaro (5895 meters) this September (6th – 21st 2011). The trek will last 8 days, taking the Lemosho Route and directed by World Expeditions (who also took Chris Moyles and Cheryl Cole to the top!) The terrain involves forest, heath, rocky outcrops and glaciers at the very top. Added to this is the challenge of adjusting to the altitude. I aim to raise £4000 pounds for the Jigsaw Appeal, and am asking anyone who feels

generous enough to sponsor me perhaps £5, £10 or more towards this fantastic and life-saving appeal. Please visit my webpage at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/catbattsonkili Also, I am looking for seven business sponsorships, which I will (in return for a charitable donation of £100 or more) advertise the business along with my fundraising events and will wear a t-shirt featuring their logo on it for a day of the climb, and take photos throughout the day. For more details on the business sponsorship email p6005@canford.com or call 07854 900485. My current sponsors are Active Sports Development (www.activesportsdevelopment.com) and Piccolo Mondo Italian Restaurant (www.piccolomondoristorante.co.uk).
