4 Dear Christchurch, Bargates, Fairmile, Iford, Burton, Mudeford, Somerford, Stanpit, Friars Cliff & Purewell!
Welcome...
The Christchurch Directory
The summer holidays are just around the corner! Something to look forward to. Whether you are going away or not, we live in such a glorious area that we really do not need to go away, so it is a time of year I most enjoy. On that note I am looking for some good, bright photos of the area to put on our front covers. Do you have one, or know someone who would love to see their photo in print? Please let me know by phone 01202 894397 or send an email to debbie@ dorsetdirectories.co.uk. We will of course accredit the person in the magazine, so their name will be in print, on Facebook and online too!

Highcliffe Revival Food Festival Now in its third year the team at The Highcliffe Revival Food Festival always intended to lay on a fantastic weekend at this yearโs event which took place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May in the village of Highcliffe on Sea. The weather was glorious on both days and even a short sharp shower on the Saturday did not stop the day from being well attended. The Sunday saw the sun shone from morning until evening.
A stellar line up of Chefs from Lesley Waters โ who also hosted a lunch at The Cliffhanger on the clifftop โ included Luke Matthews from Chewton Glen, Colin Nash from The Three Tuns in Bransgore, Manuel Salomon the new Head Chef at The Cliffhanger Eatgery on the Cliff performed at the Cookery Hub sponsored by Chris Watson Butchers, based in the Methodist Hall. There were also demonstrations from Kerry Witt (Master Chocolatier) and Jennifer Williams (Naked Jam) which were well received in the Sports & Social Club. Rich in stalls, over 80 food providers livened up the proceedings with a festive array of foods and drink from around the World, with many local artisans taking stalls to promote their products.
Over 50 forms of musical entertainment from bands, solo artists, jazz performers, theatre groups and choirs performed outside the Hoburne Offices and The Sports & Social Club, along with acts who performed at The Cliffhanger throughout the day. Winding up events, on the Sunday, a fun and highly amusing Ready Steady Cook style โcook off โ between The Lord Buteโs Kevin Brown and Marc Carella from The Christchurch Harbour Hotels took place on the Sunday in the Cookery Hub ably assisted by Nick Geary โ Mayor of Christchurch and his deputy, Lesley Dedman.
Mary Reader, Chairman of this yearโs Food Festival said, โWe could not have wished for better weather and from the positive comments we have received, the event has been very well received, with visitors from across the county. I would like to say thank you to all the sponsors whose generosity made this event happen and to my team of volunteers who went the extra mile to put on an amazing festival.โ
Children were well looked after with a bouncy castle overlooking the sea as well as Kidz Kitchen sponsored by Chris Watson Butchers and a cake making competition. The local Highcliffe Community association held a competition asking for poems to reflect thoughts of the event from 6-8 year olds and 9-11 year olds and St Markโs School took part in a โDesign a healthy mealโ competition. The entries were amazing.

7 Funerals are a subject that many of us try to avoid thinking or talking about. However, as funerals get ever more expensive it is a subject that increasingly we have to consider. An average funeral today costs รล3897 and it is forecast that in just ฤลน ve years time this will be approaching รล6000. In helping our clients to secure their funeral today the Funeral Directors Fees are guaranteed not to increase whenever the funeral is needed. As independent funeral consultants we oฤลน€er a range of funeral plans giving our clients the opportunity of selecting the funeral plan that best suits their wishes and, with a wide range of payment options, best suits their pocket. By visiting people in their own home our discussions are private as well as conฤลน dential. Finally a word from Barrie Smith of Oratu Consultancy: รข€œDuring my two years of helping people plan their funerals the greatest pleasure I get is to be told, time and time again, of the relief our clients feel at having planned their funerals.รข€?
Why do people like you ask for my help to secure their pre-paid funeral?
รข€ห To ensure they select the funeral that is right for them รข€ห For peace of mind รข€ห To secure their funeral at todayรข€™s prices รข€ห To relieve loved ones worry รข€ห My expertise and experience, which is free for my clients

Avoid Troublesome Tenancies
From subletting to damage to your property, whilst cases of these are rare, some troublesome tenants can lead to loss of rent and expensive repair bills. Here are some quick tips to help you avoid troublesome tenancies before it all goes sour!
9
Jeremy Clarke
Many tenants are looking for a place to call home, if your property is well presented, a house-proud tenant would be more likely to take care of it. It is often the case that how a property is presented goes a long way towards the type of tenants it attracts. Making your property fresh, bright and clean with fantastic kerb appeal will help ensure you ๏ฌnd tenants who truly want to look after it. The best question to ask yourself when it comes to this is, โwhy should a tenant care about your property if it looks like you donโt?โ Do your checks! Rather than having to deal with troubleshooting once a tenancy has begun itโs always best practice to do your checks before it even starts. Full background checks including credit checks, identity checks and obtaining references from a prospectโs employer and former landlord will help to gauge whether they would be a ๏ฌtting tenant or not and will ensure your property is tenanted with the best possible people. In addition making sure that the tenant has the right to rent could save you facing a sti๏ฌ penalty! Pay a visit We would always recommend periodical visits to your property, around once a quarter is advisable. Visits truly are the only way you can tell what is going on behind closed doors, ensuring your tenant is living within the rules of their tenancy agreement. These visits are also brilliant for getting to know your tenants, thus building a relationship and trust with them. Help from the experts Easily the best way to ensure you avoid issues with tenants is to use a reputable agent to take some of the stress away from you. Belvoir Christchurch can source your tenant and manage the whole tenancy process, which means all of the referencing and checks are done professionally so you donโt have to worry about the tenants that will be living in your property, services range from ๏ฌnding a tenant and setting the tenancy up to fully managing your asset/investment. As experienced experts, Belvoir Christchurch is equipped to ensure your property is tenanted and cared for in the best possible way. Contact Belvoir Christchurch to ๏ฌnd out how they can manage the whole process for you, ensuring you have as little stress as possible!

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes โ not the frames has received the coveted โWhich Trusted Traderโ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. But itโs not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the &KULVWFKXUFK area
DQG Panager Justin Friel agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. โThe truth is that itโs not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Iโve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.โ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and heโll be happy to help!

Talking about Wildlife...
Go Wild in June... Nature is calling this June for all to join the Wildlife Trustsโ 30 Days Wild initiative. The challenge, brimming with motivation, wild ideas and examples of activities, has been set up to encourage everyone to get involved with all things wild. The initiative promotes the improved mental and physical well-being gained from interacting with nature, and aims to increase awareness on how to protect our invaluable environment. A Random Act of Wildness, the theme at the centre of the challenge, is about making time daily to connect with the natural world, or simply carrying out a small act to help the environment. You can use ideas you get in the pack as inspiration or create your own Random Acts. Itโs also about experiencing, learning about, and helping wildlife in Dorset: the smallest act, such as putting up a bee hotel in your garden, can make a big di๏ฌerence to the little creatures all around us. range from creating an urban haven for hedgehogs to being a citizen scientist and conducting surveys to writing a wildlife poem, or indulging in a therapeutic nap outdoors. The opportunities are endless, and the bene๏ฌts immeasurable, both for you and the environment. To sign up and for your free pack of ideas, along with a wild badge and a funky wallchart to track your progress, visit www.mywildlife.org.uk/30dayswild. In Dorset, if you are under 18 years of age with a passion for nature, take advantage of being outdoors anytime. Get busy being a shutterbug with your digital camera or mobile, and send your wildlife photos to us for the Pat Dolbear Photographic Competition for Young People, with cash prizes available. Avon Heath Country Park: Frequently Asked Questions Why do you have cattle on the park? Grazing animals have always been a feature of heathland management. Cattle help to suppress scrub encroachment and to develop a varied vegetation structure, they also help to maintain plant diversity on wet heath, providing niches for now rare plant and animal species on bare ground, and to maintain low nutrient levels. The cattle we have grazing on North and South Park are British Whites. Our grazier keeps a close eye on them, and can often be seen driving his land rover, followed closely by a herd of cows who know he has food on board!! Why donโt you have any bins on the park? The reduction in litter on the park since we took away the bins is staggering! Litter is very dangerous for wildlife, unsightly, time consuming to pick up and expensive to have taken away. We do have a small bin in the Heathland Discovery Centre and the cafรฉ are happy to take rubbish from you if it is something youโve purchased from them. Otherwise we kindly ask you to take your rubbish home allowing more of our time and money to be spent on managing the heathland for wildlife. Why do I need to pick up all my dogs mess, even if its off the footpath? All dog mess should be bagged and binned, it is one of the most contentious issues on the park. Apart from the more obvious issues of getting on peoples shoes and pushchairs, adding nutrients to the soil, being full of nasty bacteria that can cause blindness in children we also found that in a recent survey, wheelchair users said they were
put off coming to the park because of dog mess. It is particularly unpleasant when it gets on the wheels of their chair, which they have to turn using their hands, and which they then have to put in the boot of their car! Why arenโt there more dog poo bins on the parks? Dog poo bins are emptied by hand, the bags are loaded onto a vehicle, therefore they need to be sited somewhere with good vehicle access. We try and site them as close to the busiest areas of the park as possible. Most dogs like to โgoโ fairly soon after arriving on the park, which is why we have one at each car park. The bins are emptied regularly and we are charged for this service, which would then have to be passed on to our visitors via car parking fees etc. Why do I need to stick to the paths between March and September? Ground nesting birds such as the Nightjar and Woodlark are completely reliant on the heathland habitat. Nesting on the ground makes their eggs and chicks very vulnerable to disturbance, and whilst humans and dogs may not always trample or damage the eggs or chicks directly, they can easily scare the parents off the nest and leave the contents exposed to predators. We also have all 6 species of native reptiles active on the park at this time of year, sticking to the paths avoids disturbing or harming any reptiles and it is safer for yourselves and any dogs to stay out of the heather.

This event has earned its place in the Dorset eventsโ calendar by welcoming back charities and businesses for the sixth year running.

Adventures of Nellie
28 28
The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie took us fishing! This was another new experience for Nellie and she was rather excited. Grandma however was not so thrilled. Having been a fishermanโs wife for over 50 years the thought of one more day by the water was not so inspiring. I am sure any ladies out there with husbands who love to cast a line, will understand her reaction. When Dad proposed to Mum in 1962 he did addโฆ โBut I do go fishingโฆโ Mum has never lived it down. As a child, nearly every Sunday of the fresh water fishing season, I loved to go to the ponds with Mum and Dad. Picnic in hand of course. Later when my sister was born, she was less enthralled and used to wonder off looking at the flowers and the birds. She still does that now! My best catch ever was a tench in Ireland when I โborrowedโ Dadโs huge rod (I was 13 at the
The boys and some of their catches
Nellie and family after a long dayโs fishing time) and refused to let him help me bring the fish in. I was very proud of that one. Guess who takes after her Dad? So, Nellie was โchomping at the wheelโ to get going. Hordle Lakes near Lymington she decided to drive us to. It is a great place for the family as well as the more keen, carp fisherman. With separate lakes you can choose your level of skill. Bobโs Lake has recently had 30 pound carp added to it! Can you imagine getting one of those on your line? Well there were certainly men there who were doing just that. One man was having a cigarette after his line brokeโฆ he was looking into the sky dreaming longingly about the โone that got awayโ. Maybe us women should try and understand this moreโฆ We set up in โTench Lakeโ. There was a family right next to us and with all the commotion we created I think they wish we hadnโt. Ever had that feeling? Hayden has fished with Grandad many times. In fact when he was only two years old he picked up a rod as if he was 50 and had done it all

29 29 his life. Funny how children do that. Now every time we go fishing with Dad we catch fish, and I mean a LOT of fish! Today was no exception. After two hours of catching common carp, F1 carp (those that have no barbels, are a hybrid and cannot regenerate - I found out), mirror carp, roach, and even a tench that Hayden caught, the fish were literally eating out of our hands. It was so good in fact Grandad taught Hayden the technique of โmuggingโ or โdobbingโ where you quite honestly drop the maggot into the fishes mouth! That is illegal in match fishing of course, but Dad said the likelihood of being able to do that up north near Hull where they live, was nigh on impossible. Hayden (and Grandad) had fun with that. Hayden also learned the technique of using a feeding pot off the end of the rod, tipping the maggots into the water right where the float and hook are. Very clever. Now Stephen, unlike his son, was not born with a fishing rod in his handโฆ. He got the prize for the tiddlers and if he broke off once and lost the hook, he must have broken off twenty times. Nellie tried to tell him that it wasnโt a tug of war or a wrestling match. Maybe a light touch would work? It was all to no avail. The funniest part was when Stephen did get a fish on the hook and promptly started walking along the bank with it, taking the rod over Grandadโs
Teamwork helps to land yet another one
Debbie getting in on the action too! head (who ducked quickly, looking very quizzical), and continued marching along! Did I laugh. Nellie too! Of course it was another fish that got away and I donโt blame it, it was enough to scare the toughest ones off. We did explain that fish donโt have legs. Poor Stephen. Stick to the day job. Mum and I had gone for a rest. I thought we would be able to sit there for few hours relaxing, but that was not the case. We were up and down taking photos, videos, making cups of tea, getting burgers from the burger bar and generally keeping the men happy while they cast their lines and had a lot of fun. It was a great day all round. I am still not sure why the two men opposite decided to pack up and leave about an hour after we arrived. Oh ohโฆ The skimmer carp were fun to watch on the water, the friendly robin sitting on Haydenโs rod, the gentleman who fishes every day having worked in aviation all his life and could talk for Englandโฆ It is such a friendly place. The weather was beautiful. It is days out like this with the family that make life worth while. Pleasurable memories we can definitely look back on. Nellie was so pleased she was able to help and create such a moment. That is her purpose and what a great purpose to have. Where will she take us next? By Debbie Corney

Whatโs On at Regent Centre
Highcliffe Charity Players present
Made in Dagenham - The Musical Itโs back to the swinging sixties as the awardwinning Highcliffe Charity Players get into gear with their latest musical โ โMade in Dagenhamโ. This inspiring, heart-warming story about a group of Dagenham female factory workers who made history fighting for womenโs rights against the might of Ford, is staged at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th July, and is sponsored by local Ford dealers, Keith Motors. Adapted from the much-loved 2010 British film, this fun-filled, high octane, feel-good show was inspired by true-life events โ the 1968 women sewing machinistsโ strike at the Ford Motor Companyโs Dagenham plant in Essex, which would lead to the Equal Pay Act of 1970.
This uplifting new British musical comedy was premiered at Londonโs Adelphi Theatre in 2014 starring former Bond girl Gemma Arterton. The story follows Rita OโGrady, a working woman and mother, who leads Dagenhamโs feisty sewing machinists on their life-changing journey from factory floor to the House of Commons, fighting for sexual equality in โ60s Britain. The cast is directed by Southampton-based Adam Myers of Music Theatre South, and led by HCPโs Beth Chumley as Rita, who comments: โI feel absolutely honoured to be playing such a strong-willed character in such a moving show โ I canโt wait!โ Says HCP Chairman Georgina Smith: โMade In Dagenham has a rousing, toetapping sixtiesโ beat and very witty lyrics. Itโs an energetic, funny and moving show that makes you laugh and cry in equal measures.โ And Keith Motors Operations Manager Robert Keith adds: โSponsoring Made in Dagenham is a great way for us to say thank you to our local community for all the trust and support they have shown us over the years.โ Tickets are ยฃ14.50, concessions ยฃ13.50, from the Regent Centre Box Office on 01202 499199 and online: www.regentcentre.co.uk

On Your Plot
Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.
Jobs for June :-
โข Take o๏ฌ the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. โข Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. โข Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. โข Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.
Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you donโt already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another ๏ฌlling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you donโt need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of โgreenโ and โbrownโ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that youโve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding youโve no room for the cabbages that youโd like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the di๏ฌerent varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Theyโll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking ๏ฌowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

Celebrity Interview

Celebrity Interview:
Miriam Margolyes By Tim Saunders Retirement is increasingly becoming a luxury of the past. While for some the cost of living is the reason, for others working is addictive and good for the soul. This desire to keep working can be found in all sectors, from scientists (Professor Stephen Hawking is 74) through to business people (Sir Alan Sugar is 69 and Sir Richard Branson is 66). And even in the world of fame. Seasoned entertainer Bruce Forsyth is 88 while David Attenborough the naturalist is 90. BAFTA award winning actress Miriam Margolyes is a comparative youngster at a mere 75. She is widely known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films. Miriam is as busy as ever, not just with her acting but also her work as a voice artist. โSorry weโre going to have to reschedule our interview,โ she says to me, โIโve got another job on.โ But weโre able to catch up at a quieter moment. It is a craving for success that drives Miriam to work even harder. โI donโt think Iโm as successful as I would like and I donโt think Iโm as successful as people think I am. Iโm just in the front rank of the second raters as Somerset Maugham put himself. I think Iโm hugely talented and I think I have the potential to be great.โ As a voice artist, she has quickly become wellknown to countless children the world over as Weathersnike in Bottersnikes and Gumbles. Set in Australia it tells the tale of the evil bottersnikes: ugly, lazy creatures whose ears become hot when they get angry. The Gumbles are small, giggly things who the bottersnikes
try to enslave to make them do all their chores. This programme is aired in both Britain and Australia, a relationship that works well for Miriam because she has divided her time between the two countries for years. In 2013 she was presented with her Australian citizenship certificate by then prime minister Julia Gillard. And she isnโt as wealthy as some might envisage. โI donโt have more than half a million in the bankโฆ Some people would say thatโs pretty wealthy but I think you have to have a million in the bank before youโre wealthy.โ Miriam does own or part-own a few properties, a home in south-west London, a Tuscan farmhouse and a penthouse close to Bondi Beach in Australia. There are two facets to Miriam that have stood her in good stead. Her eloquent tones ensuring that her voice is familiar. And her appearance making her instantly recognisable on stage or screen. Miriam has a great ability to make any role memorable. Her career spans five decades. She has appeared in TV programmes including Crossroads, three Blackadders and even an Agatha Christie (2004). More recently she has appeared in Doc Martin and Kingdom. Her film appearances include The Age of Innocence (1993) where she won the BAFTA. Directed by Martin Scorsese, Miriam played the part of the Countessโ grandmother. The Countess was played by Michelle Pfeiffer. โBut the thing that I am most proud of in my life is Dickensโ Women.โ The one- person show includes 23 different characters based on or inspired by characters in Charles Dickensโ novels. Jewish, a Labour supporter and a lesbian, Miriam is her own harshest critic, known for her plain speaking. When she has time, she is passionate about genealogy and politics. โI have got back as far as 1790 with my family tree but it is difficult because records of Jews were destroyed in the Second World War. I also collect political cartoons of the past. It is the past that I am interested in these days.โ www.miriammargolyes.com Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Money Saving Tips
Martin
LEWIS +ROLGD\ %RRNLQJV
Itโs cold, wet, and miserable, so no wonder this is the peak summer holiday booking period. However, with the pound recently at a 32 year low against the dollar, and matching the awful rates of 2013 against the euro, this year itโs likely to be a challenge to get a decent price. The weak pound not only hits holiday spending, but hotels, car hire and more, so here are my 10 top tips for keeping costs down. 1. Pocket the perfect plastic to make the pound perform. Spend abroad and most credit cards add a 3% โnon-sterling transaction feeโ which means ยฃ100 of euros costs ยฃ103 and some then load other charges on top. However, there are a range of specialist cards that donโt add that fee. So, you get that dayโs same near-perfect rate that the banks do, in every country. My top two long term picks, as well as good exchange rates, have low cash fees - the www.creation. co.uk Everyday card and www.halifax. co.uk Clarity. Spending on these is super cheap, usually easily smashing the best bureau de change rates. Yet only do this if youโll repay the card IN FULL each month, to avoid the 18.9% ish representative APR. Itโs worth noting if instead of spending on the card you withdraw foreign cash and spend that, you will pay interest even if you clear in full, but even with that added theyโre still not that costly. For full info on top cards, and an eligibility calculator so you can see which youโre most likely to be accepted for go to www.mse.me/
payabroad. 2. One hotel room can have hundreds of prices. Once you know what hotel you want, always check to see if itโs being sold cheaper elsewhere, use comparison sites www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com for a wide-ranging search (and always call the hotel to see if itโll beat the price). The di๏ฌerence can be ยฃ100s. 3. With car hire book it early and buy insurance elsewhere. If hiring abroad, generally early booking is cheaper, what costs ยฃ10 a day now can be ยฃ40 a day when you get there. Hereโs the three key steps: a) Do a comparison to ๏ฌnd your cheapest. Iโd try www.kayak.co.uk, www.carrentals.co.uk and if needed www.skyscanner.net too. b) Check stealth fuel charges. Some try and make you pay for a full tank and return it empty - adding ยฃ80ish if you donโt drive far. The above, apart from Kayak, let you ๏ฌlter by fuel policy. c) Donโt fall for their insurance up-sell. When you pick up a car theyโll often try and fear sell you up to ยฃ25/day insurance on top โ to cover the large excess if you have any claims. If youโll pay for this, instead use excess insurance comparison site www.moneymaxim. co.uk before you go and you can often @MoneySavingExpert ๏ฌnd a policy from ยฃ2 a day. Yet if you do

on a credit (not debit) card which can be โฌ1,000+.
4. Find best holiday cash in seconds. Just +ROLGD\ %RRNLQJV use my www.travelmoneymax.com site which compares 30 online bureaux to ๏ฌnd which gives you the best rates in seconds, factoring all fees. 5. Speedily ๏ฌnd the cheapest ๏ฌights. The obvious start point again are comparison sites. My top picks are www.skyscanner. net, www.kayak.co.uk and www. momondo.co.uk which include most airlines and booking sites like Expedia and ebookers. Yet if you really want to slash ๏ฌight costs, you need to get clever, such as using ethnic specialist travel agents and checking out airline code sharing deals. For full help see www. mse.me/cheap๏ฌights. 6. Donโt forget the good old fashion package holiday. Package holidays are where you usually get ๏ฌights, hotels and transfers in one. They can still be the cheapest especially if youโre going away for 7, 10 or 14 days in a traditional holiday destination like Benidorm. Both www.travelsupermarket.com and www.icelolly.com have comparison sites. Then once youโve got up a price, if you want to shave a little o๏ฌ, you can call up other agents to see if theyโll sell you the same holiday at a cheaper price. 7. Book travel insurance AS SOON as you book the holiday. Every year people email me saying something sadly akin to, โIโm due on holiday in a few months, but Iโve just been given a cancer diagnosis and canโt go, the airline wonโt let me cancel, what can I do?โ The answer is โthatโs what travel insurance is
forโ. Yet many people only book it just before they go. Waiting defeats half the point of having the cover โ which is to protect you in the event cancellation is needed due to illness, a death in the family or something else. Full help on the cheapest policies, including for over 65s in www.mse.me/travelinsurance. 8. Booked EasyJet โ keep checking the price. If your EasyJet price drops after youโve booked it โ excluding in a sale โ you can just call it up to ask for the di๏ฌerence back in vouchers. Jo emailed: โWe got an ยฃ803 voucher... all thanks to you.โ 9. Check if your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid. The free EHIC means if youโre in an EU (and a few others) country you can use a state GP or hospital for the same price as a local, so if itโs free for them, itโs free for you. Itโs valuable extra protection (alongside travel insurance). Yet itโs not valid for millions, this is nothing to do with Brexit, but simply that it has a valid until date and 5.3 million expired in the last year. Check yours, if it is, go to www. nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/ EHIC to get a new one for FREE (donโt Google this, youโll ๏ฌnd shyster sites trying to charge you to do it who add nothing to the process). 10. Be careful boozing on holiday. A ๏ฌnal thought. If youโre going to drink on holiday (and letโs be honest, for many people thatโs half what itโs about), remember this may invalidate your travel insurance claim. So, take it easy, and if you wonโt take it easy, at least think about what belongings youโre taking with you! @MoneySavingExpert
