Christchurch Strollers win national accolade Congratulations to Christchurch Strollers, who have been awarded accreditation by Walking for Health, a Natural England initiative. Christchurch Strollers, part of the Christchurch Community Partnership, became an accredited scheme on 19 January 2011, havin g successfu lly demonstrated that they meet the required criteria. This includes offering led walks for beginners, meeting the “Walking for Health” safety and insurance standards for all walks and collecting basic monitoring information. As an accredited scheme, Christchurch Strollers will benefit from being seen as part of a nationally evaluated scheme as well as being formally recognised by health professionals, prospective partners and funders. One of the Strollers walk leaders, Sue Naylor, said: “We’re very proud to have

got this accreditation; it shows that what we’re doing is working. We get a nice mix of regular walkers and a fair number of new people for each walk and everyone enjoys the walks for both the physical activity and the social side of things.” William Bird, Strategic Health Advisor for Natural England said: “The new accreditation scheme has been essential in ensuring high standards across the WfH network and providing frontline health professionals with added confidence when referring their patients on.” Christchurch Strollers welcome new walkers throughout the year. For more information go to the website at www.dorsetforyou.com and search for Christchurch Strollers or call 01202 495017. A new programme of walks from March through to June will be available soon.

Talking All Shapes and Sizes... Southbourne Link: How long have you been a personal trainer? Mark, all-shapes-and-sizes.co.uk: 20 years. Back then only Madonna and Sting had a Personal Trainer, so it was a hard thing to sell! SL: If I came to you to lose weight, what would you get me doing? Mark: I'd get you active and look at your food diary. SL: Is exercise the secret to fat loss then Mark? Mark: Exercise is a key part of any fat loss programme, but it isn't necessarily the 'Holy Grail' that it's been made out to be. The maths for burning off calories just don't stack up. SL: What do you mean? We're always being told to burn off calories? Mark: Yes, the health professionals are still stuck with a flawed model. SL: That's a bold statement, give us an example. Mark: Well, suppose you have a well deserved night out – a few drinks and a nice meal. You could easily consume 3000 calories over your supposed daily allowance. If you go to the gym the next day you'd have to run 30 miles (yes 30!) to burn off those calories. Clearly no one is going to do that!! As I said, the calorie theory just doesn't stack up. SL: Yes, I wouldn't like to run 30 miles! Mark: No, me neither. You can attack the low calorie theory from all sorts of angles. SL: Like what? Mark: Well take caffeine for example. If you believe in low calories, then you're drawn in by caffeine because it's calorie free.

SL: Are you saying I can't have my morning coffee! Mark: Well that's up to you (laughing)... SL: So what's the solution? Mark: Well there's always a technical solution but sometimes the simple solutions are the best. SL: Such as? Mark: Cutting down on the obvious culprits, like cakes and chocolate – everyone has a weakness. It's as basic as that, and it's my job to motivate people to change their habits. I send a lot of texts and emails to motivate people between sessions. SL: And the technical solution? Mark: Well, I use the Glycaemic Loads (GL's) of foods. Glycaemic Index has been around for a while, but GL's are a more powerful tool for fat loss. It tells you what effect the food is going to have on your blood sugar. By controlling this, you can control appetite and fat storage. SL: Sounds intriguing. Mark: Yes, and works better than counting calories. SL: What would people do if they want you to help them lose weight and tone up? Mark: Contact me on 07989 950208 or email all-shapes-and-sizes@hotmail.com SL: Thank you for coming in. Mark: Thank you too. Shall we have that coffee now?!!

SL: Are you saying caffeine makes you fat? Mark: Yes, without doubt it encourages fat storage. It triggers a stress response (fight or flight) in the body and acts in a similar way to sugar – stimulating insulin. Insulin’s job is to encourage fat storage and reduce fat burning – a disaster for anyone wanting to shape-up!

March’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs There is still time to plant trees and shrubs if the task has not been already completed. Making sure the holes are dug big enough and deep enough for the root ball, also taking in consideration to use a good tree and shrub compost. Climbers and Wall-Plants Species and cultivars of Clematis that flower Summer & Autumn on new shoots made in the current season will benefit from a hard prune now. Roses The main pruning of bush and standard Roses should be carried out between the middle of the month and late March. Borders and Beds During mild spells weeds will start to grow. Deal with them as soon as they appear as they will be easier to remove. Bulbs and Corms Dahlia tubers in store for the Winter should be inspected to make sure that they are healthy and plump. Any bad patches should be cut away with a clean and sharp knife and dipped in Sulphur. Rock Gardens and Pools All leaves should have been removed by now. Mild spells may bring weeds & slugs, remove weeds while small and treat the slug s with slug bait (with suit able containers sunken in the ground, beer is a good tip.)

Fruit There is still time for both planting and pruning but try to complete task before new growth starts. Vegetables Seed potatoes should be removed from their bags and set to sprout in trays or shallow boxes (shed or greenhouse). Greenhouse and Frame Greenhouse should have been sterilized. Carnations and Chrysanthemums can be propagated from cuttings 55-60f (13-15c). Give free ventilation except on cold nights. House Plants Plants at home, particularly flowering ones need lots of light and free ventilation not stuck between blinds or curtains kept out of drafts and be careful not to over water, just damp. Always check how your plant looks. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Lawns Prepare for the growing season by raking with good wire rake removing worm casts and rubbish from lawn. Cut lawn but not too short then weed feed and moss kill as early as one can depending on the weather.

Looking for the perfect way to spend the long Easter weekend? Well look no further because The 2nd Big Bournemouth Beer Festival returns to the BIC Purbeck Hall from Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th April. The first Big Bournemouth Beer Festival enjoyed huge success last April and is returning with over 200 beers from breweries across the UK – that’s 50 more than last year! Last year’s festival attracted over 2500 visitors to the Purbeck Hall resulting in the venue having to turn people away! The BIC were pleased with how smoothly the event ran and the friendly and relaxed atmosphere at the festival, which is organised in association with East Dorset CAMRA and sponsored by Hot Rocks Restaurant and bar. “The event created a r e al bu zz in th e t o wn , c ap tu ri n g th e imagination of customers and businesses alike. With the experience of the first year under our belts, we’re looking forward to making the next Big Bournemouth Beer Festival even bigger and better”, says Tom Madge, the BIC’s Assistant Marketing Manager. As you’d expect there will of course be a good selection of beers from local breweries such as Palmers, Bowman Ales and Hopback but there will also be the chance to sample a wide range of beers from breweries across the UK including Yorkshire, Kent, Cheshire and even as far out as the Orkney Islands! And if beer is not your usual tipple, this year’s festival will also feature its own cider and perry bar and also a wine bar for those who prefer a good glass of vino. If at any point you need an accompaniment to the beer tasting, food and bar snacks will also be available to purchase. The Beer Festival will once again be hosting live entertainment throughout the weekend in association with Bournemouth Folk Club. Many acts are already confirmed including Quinns Quinney who received a rapturous applause last year, Lady Winwoods Maggots and zany London-based band Top Shelf Jazz. The live entertainment went down a storm last year creating a wonderful atmosphere with dancing

in the evening sessions and more chilled out, relaxed music to enjoy during the afternoons. You don’t go home empty handed either, the £5.50 admission price not only includes your first half pint of beer but also a tasting guide and souvenir beer glass to remember your weekend. New for this year is ‘Sup-Up Sunday’ – there is no admission fee so, although this means you don’t get the freebies, you only have to pay for your beer vouchers and can drink up what’s left of the kegs! Another change for this year is that instead of buying your half pint beer vouchers when you arrive, you can pre-purchase them online whenever you like allowing you to avoid queues on the day. You can also get exclusive discounts on Wilts and Dorset Explorer bus tickets – helping to promote safe drinking. More information is available at www.bic.co.uk.
