Well we certainly had a cold spell for a while but spring is officially here On 20th March! A time many of us look forward to. New life, new growth and warmer weather! Time for a spring clean and out with the old and in with the new. I love it.

Next month we will have our first adventure with “Daichi The Dashing Dude”! He is the new Dorset Directories campervan and he is a bit of a character.

There may be no holding him back… All good fun and I can’t wait to get back on the road visiting some new and exciting places right here on our beautiful South Coast.

Dorset Army Cadet Force: Christchurch Detachment I’d like to take a moment to thank the publishers of the Christchurch Directory for giving me the opportunity to share the news about the Christchurch Army Cadet Detachment.

We are part of Dorset Army Cadet Force (ACF) and parade twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays 19:15-21:30.

The ACF is a national uniformed youth organisation for young people aged 12-18 years of age, based upon military lines and sponsored by the MOD who provide uniforms, equipment and training facilities.

It is important to note however there is no compulsion for Cadets to commit to serving in the armed forces, although some do chose this as a career path.

The Cadets follow a progressive, structured syllabus designed to build confidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork as well as practical skills such as first aid. The topics covered include: Drill & Turnout, Shooting, Skill at Arms, Navigation, Fieldcraft, Expedition Skills, Physical Training, Military Knowledge and Cadet in the Community. As Cadet progress and gain experience they may also have the chance to do things like parachuting or take part in events such as the Ten Tors Challenge.

There is also a strong element of Sports within the ACF with Cadets representing their Detachments, Companies and

Members of the Detachment getting ready for Burton Veterans Parade County before representative honours at a regional and then national level. Here at Christchurch we have Regional and National Champions in Athletics and Swimming with over 10 gold medals and 3 national ACF Records being held by our Cadets.

In addition, the Cadets have the opportunity to undertake recognised BTEC / ILM Qualifications as part of their training as well as taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme.

We currently have 35 Cadets and 5 Adult Instructors at our Detachment and are very active within the wider Christchurch community, volunteering with several charities such as the Christchurch Food Bank, Autism Wessex and the Royal British Legion.

This has been a brief introduction to what we do but in the coming months I’ll keep you abreast of our activities and achievements.

The Flying Scotsman @ Swanage Railway The most famous steam locomotive in the world, Flying Scotsman, is due to visit the Swanage Railway and be reunited with a rare Devon Belle Pullman observation carriage for the first time in almost 50 years. Between 1969 and 1972 Flying Scotsman ran with the Devon Belle Car 14 during a tour of the US. The company running the tour went bankrupt and Flying Scotsman was returned home but the Pullman observation carriage remained in the US. Flying Scotsman will

be hauling five seven-carriage trains a day from Swanage to Corfe Castle and Norden for five days – from 22 March to 26 March.

Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

Species of the month Can you remember the last time you saw a hedgehog? Or a robin? Did you used to see them, but perhaps not recently? These are the kinds of questions that we, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), need the answers to.

And we’d like the public to help us.

In 2015 DWT started a citizen science project, ‘Species of the Month’ – asking the public to let us know when they’ve seen a certain species for each month of the year. Since, not only have thousands of records flown in, but so have your anecdotes about wildlife experiences, with many of you sharing your delight from a regular or occasional wildlife visitor in your local patch or garden.

Recording and looking for both rare and common wildlife allows conservationists to monitor peaks and declines in wildlife populations. Something that’s in abundance now, might not be in 5 years’ time and these records could help identify trends to understand why this has happened.

Wildlife also doesn’t recognise boundaries – it goes anywhere there is habitat and food, so recording what’s in your garden or local green spaces is just as important as conservation teams recording which species are on nature reserves.

So, this new year, can you ‘look out’ for wildlife? Past species we’ve been interested in finding out more about include the easily identifiable robin, brimstone, house sparrow and hedgehog. If it’s something a little rarer, we’ll give you all the information you need to be able to identify it. In March we’re looking for the bee-fly pollinator, to kick start our Get Dorset Buzzing campaign!

ABOUT THE DARK-EDGED BEE-FLY

The Dark-edged Bee-fly, or ‘Large Beefly’, looks rather like a bumble bee, with a long, straight proboscis that it uses to feed on nectar from spring flowers, such as primroses and violets. It is on the wing in the early spring, when it can often be seen in sunny patches. In flight, it is even more like a bee as it produces a high-pitched buzz. This species of bee-fly is common, but the Heath and Mottled Bee-flies are much rarer.

HOW TO IDENTIFY

Looking like a bee, the Dark-edged Bee-fly has yellowy-brown hair on its body, long, spindly legs, and a long proboscis. The wings have dark markings along their leading edges, hence it’s common name. There are several species of bee-fly in the UK, which can be very difficult to tell apart; the Darkedged Bee-fly has a dark edge, while others have plainer, translucent wings.

Report urges retirees to register LPAs to avoid ‘later-life financial crisis’ A new report suggests that four-fifths of retirees who are taking advantage of pension freedoms may face a ‘later-life financial crisis’.

According to a report from Zurich, the risk – estimated to affect 345,000 retirees – stems from their lack of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), potentially hindering them from obtaining financial help should they become ill or lose mental capacity. Without providing a family member or trusted friend with the legal authority to make this kind of decision, the Courts would have to become involved should the individual no longer be able to make decisions themselves.

Commenting on the findings of the report Mr Skilton of Dorset & Wight Wills highlighted the important purpose which LPA’s serve in later life decision making, particularly since the pension freedoms were introduced.

He said: “Registering an LPA has become even more important since the pension reforms.

Thousands of people are now making complex decisions on their pension into old age, when the risk of developing a sudden illness or condition such as dementia increases.

“Despite this, many are unprepared for a sudden health shock or a decline in their mental abilities. The time to set up an LPA is well before you need it, and pension providers should be highlighting this to their customers.

“With more and more people moving into drawdown, this is creating a ticking time bomb that could leave thousands of people facing a potential later-life financial crisis. It is vital that people plan for a time when managing their pension might become hard, or even impossible, and speaking to Dorset and Wight Wills is one of the best ways to do this.”

Is it true a ‘Common Law Marriage’ means nothing in law?

There are about 3.3 million unmarried couples currently living together in the UK. That is about 1 family in 5, and this is also the fastest growing family type.

There are many reasons for choosing not to get married, but many unmarried couples do not realise that they are leaving themselves in a precarious financial position.

This is because many of these couples mistakenly believe that if a couple lives together for long enough, or after they have had children together, that they will each automatically have the same legal rights and responsibilities as a married couple if they later split up or one of them dies without leaving a Will.

Whilst unmarried parents do have legal and financial obligations towards any child they have together, the same does not apply between the parents themselves.

What is the process of making a Will?

We spend our whole lives working to provide for ourselves and the people we love. To ensure that the assets that you have worked so hard for, pass to the people that you love, it is important to make a Will.

However, there are steps which cohabiting couples can take to protect themselves from any problems arising from separation:

Cohabitation Agreement - This records the couple’s intentions concerning property and other financial support for their children if they separate.

Declaration of Trust – This records how the equity in a property, should be shared between a couple even if their financial contributions are not equal.

Make a Will – This details how financial support will be provided to the survivor on the death of their partner.

‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer.

About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000.

New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities.

Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson

reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. It was also a personal challenge for me – something to train for and a way of getting fitter and healthier.”

Laura Beavis, Wessex Cancer Trust’s events manager, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and we would love 2019 to be the biggest and best yet.”

Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with well-earned refreshments.

Gardening Tips

On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot.

There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!

Jobs for March :-

• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough.

• Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!)

• Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in.

• Plant first early potatoes later in the month.

• Keep on top of the weeding and pest control.

• Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge.

Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will

help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest.

Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks.

As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred.

Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil.

Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears

Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c.

2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump.

3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture.

4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions).

5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath).

6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish).

7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight.

8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized.

9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
