Linwood College orchestra visit twin town for concerts Memb ers of th e Lin wood College orchestra from Christch urch, New Zealand visited their twin town in Dorset to be greeted by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary. The orchestra played two concerts in the Dorset town as the culmination of their European tour which has seen them playing in Rome, Peruggia, Florence, Venice, Salzburg and Paris before arriving in London for a concert at Westminster Abbey on ANZAC day. Some members of the orchestra stayed with host families from Twynham School, who have an exchange programme with the New Zealand school, while others stayed at Avon Tyrrell Activity Centre. Although the tour had been planned some time ago, it was put into jeopardy by the devastating earthquake which hit Christchurch, New Zealand earlier this year. Tony Ryan, the conductor of the orchestra and Head of Music at Linwood College, said: “Two weeks after the earthquake I thought there was no way that the tour could go ahead, but some very determined people started contacting the students, who themselves were determined to find a way of making sure the tour would still happen. “I think we all saw it as a way of getting beyond the earthquake and trying to cope with life again.
CD May 2011 page 6
“There was a silver lining in the financial support that we got from the community which has made it a much easier trip. The moral support we’ve had has been equally important, knowing that people in other parts of the world have been thinking of us. “The tour has been amazing with big crowds and standing ovations at every concert. The students are really at the top of their form, partially because of the extra rehearsal time they have had. The earthquake meant that there was no school for two weeks and since then we’ve had to share buildings with another sch ool an d we only stu dy in th e afternoons so every morning has been given over to rehearsals.” The Mayor greeted the students and said: “We are extending a very warm welcome to the students. I wish them every success for the remainder of their time in Christchurch and look forward to hearing the beautiful music they’ll be playing.”

Christchurch Mayor’s charity dinner raises £3,600 The charity dinner given by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, has raised £3,600 for his charities. The event took place at Christchurch Harbour Hotel where 120 guests were entertained before the dinner by the New Forest Children’s Choir and later by the pianist Adam Horwich, who is a student at Highcliffe School.

The funds raised will be divided between the Mayor’s three charities which this year are Christchurch Activities for Young People, First Opportunities and Portfield School. The Mayor said: “I would like to thank everyone who attended the dinner for their support. I am also very grateful to the local businesses who so generously

Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer. Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins. Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK.
with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 5:00 pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park. For more information call 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk.
A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition. Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image. “I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home. With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.” The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition

Hats on for Hordle’s Easter Hordle in the New Forest brushed up its French to welcome its twinning partners this weekend. Franglais was the order of the day when 18 local families hosted 45 of their French partners from Yerville in Normandy. Ages ranged from pensioners to just 3 years old, with several new families on both sides taking part in the exchange for the first time. The visit coincided with the Easter heatwave and included a trip to Portsmouth’s Historic Naval Dockyard to visit ‘Warrior’ and ‘Victory’. The highlight of the visit was the Grand Easter Bonnet Parade which took place at an American Supper on Sunday 24 April at the Hordle WI Hall. Everyone agreed the brightly decorated tables with their yellow and white cloths and greenery really set the scene as families tucked into a wide selection of tasty home cooked dishes. Then, French and English alike paraded up and down in a dazzling array of Easter headwear. This very English tradition had really fired French imaginations. Homemade hats of all shapes and sizes appeared, lovingly prepared and carefully brought across the channel for the occasion. English families were determined not to be outshone, also sporting some highly original designs. Judges had a tough job deciding on the best. To round off the evening, the French twinning chairman Alain Gee had all the English in stitches as he practiced his English pronunciation with a few well-known English tongue-twisters before leading his committee in Abba’s ‘Money Money Money’. English families waved goodbye to their French friends on Easter Monday with plans already afoot for the return visit to Yerville in 2012. Many had found new English

friends and remained chatting on the pavement, long after the French coach had departed. First time hosts confessed they had felt slightly apprehensive beforehand but had found the experience deeply rewarding and were looking forward to visiting their new French friends next year. A spokesman for the Association said: “The twinning experience is hard to describe. The depth of mutual affection and friendship that develops over one short weekend is quite amazing and it was fabulous to see so many French children really enjoying their first visit to England and being motivated to pick up a few words of English.” Further events are planned this year. For more information and pictures of the exchange go to http://www.hordletwinning.co.uk. New members are always welcome.

WHAT’S ON AT THE REGENT? The Scarlet Pimpernel Wed 18 – Sat 21 May 7:30pm — Matinee: Sat 21 2:30pm Milton Musical Society (A) with their 15 piece orchestra Following their success with Titanic last year Milton Musical Society return with another award winning Broadway blockbuster. Baroness Orczy’s classic swashbuckling tale of dashing derring do during the Terror of the French Revolution was nominated for the Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Actor in 1998. It is 1794 and a mysterious, shadowy hero emerges from the English nobility, intent on saving the heads of his fellow French aristocrats from the deadly kiss of Madame La Guillotine. The “damned, elusive Pimpernel” and his famous calling card, the red star-shaped wild flower known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, is the scourge of the French revolutionaries. This charismatic story, part fact and part fiction, captured the world’s imagination with numerous film and TV adaptations over the years. Now it is performed as an exciting musical full of high adventure, romantic dalliances, razor sharp swordplay, splendid sets, sumptuous costumes and a sweeping score. “We seek him here, we seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere”. Is he in heaven? Is he in hell?” Catch him if you can right here at the Regent!
Tickets: Aristocrats £14.50 Revolutionaries £13.50 & £12.50 Peasants £12.50 & £11.50
Stacey Kent in Concert Sunday 22 May 7:30pm Stacey Kent, a best selling member of the Blue Note roster of recording artists, now boasts six albums, a string of awards, including the British Jazz Award, the BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist and Album of the Year, as well as a fan base that enables her to sell out concert halls around the world. Stacey’s last album, Breakfast on the Morning Train, went platinum in France and gold in Germany, and was also nominated for a 2009 Grammy award. Spring 2010 saw the release of Stacey’s eagerly anticipated new album, Raconte-Moi on Blue Note. “She has charm to burn, a smile that could give you hope in February and sings like nobody’s business” – The Wall Street Journal.
Tickets: £18 Concessions £17
Archipelago (15) Mon 23 - Wed 25 May 7:30pm Matinees: Tues 24 & Wed 25 2:30pm This is a chance to see the work of one of the rising stars of British cinema. Director Joanne Hogg cut her teeth on TV dramas like Casualty and London Bridge. This is her second feature film and it was one of the highlights of last year’s London Film Festival. Set on the idyllic Scilly Islands archipelago, this is a sharply observed portrayal of a family holiday. Middle class brother and sister, Tom Hiddleston and Lydia Leonard join their mother, Kate Fahey in Tresco, where they await their father’s arrival. It transpires that Hiddleston has accepted an overseas posting with a charity in Africa, much against his mother’s wishes. It also becomes clear that father is never going to join them. This is a holiday that everyone would rather not be on as the tension simmers and the insecurities manifest themselves. In between there is time for picnics, painting and cycling on the breathtaking island beyond Lands End. Fans of Mike Leigh will find echoes of his work in this excellent example of independent British cinema.

Tel: 01202 499 199 more than 4,000 worldwide concert performances of one sort or another, Rick has endeared himself to all genres and all ages. He is equally at home on stage with his band, The English Rock Ensemble, as he is with a symphony orchestra and chamber choir and is equally at home in a 400 seater theatre as he is playing Madison Square Garden. The one man show, An Evening With Rick Wakeman, pretty much came about by accident. Quite simply, his gear didn’t arrive for a show and all there was available was a piano. The audience were given the choice of their money back or an evening with Rick performing on the piano and telling ludicrously ridiculous and funny anecdotes. Only three people took up the offer of their money back, and An Evening With Rick Wakeman was born. These performances are very much one-offs and never done as a tour. The stories change on a regular basis, as does the music. If this show were in a cookery book, the instructions would simply read …… 1. Take a large concert grand piano and seat Rick Wakeman in front of the keys. 2. After the first piece, sprinkle in a ludicrous and funny anecdote. 3. Repeat 1 and 2 for approximately 2 hours. These performances don’t happen very often, which is why each one is very special to Rick and hopefully for the audience as well.

May’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs All trees and shrubs can still be planted if in pots but make sure sat in a bucket of water until no bubbles. Remove faded flowers now. Climbers and Wall-Plants Not much hard pruning can be done now, because the warmth is likely to be making vigorous growth, just tidy up dead bits.
shoots, leaving only the strongest ones, mulch them. Spray tree and soft fruits before blossom. Vegetables Main crop potatoes must be planted now, early ones must be earthed up. Plant out sprouts, parsley and celery when hardened off, same with runner beans.
Roses The warmer days are likely to bring early attacks of aphids and also watch signs of black spot and mildew. Speak to a Nursery man on what to spray.
Greenhouse and Frame On sunny days greenhouse plants will need more air and water. Early in the month cucumbers, sweet corn and marrows may be sown for planting out next month.
Borders and Beds Weeds grow rapidly this time of year if not tackled soon can soon overwhelm the less cultivated plant. Still tackle weeds now, little and often is good.
House Plants Move plants from sunny window-sills just plenty of light, water well with a liquid feed at half the recommended strength about every two weeks.
Bulbs and Corms Remove faded flowers from all bulbs and if Summer bedding is going in lift all bulbs as soon as flowering is over.
