Biennial Festival of Arts at Shapwick First run to great acclaim in the summer of 2009, the Shapwick Festival of Arts is an event to raise funds for the maintenance, renovation and restoration of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Shapwick, so that it may be continue to be used and enjoyed by us all. The village of Shapwick (just off the B3082, opposite Badbury Rings between Wimborne and Blandford) is hosting its second, biennial Festival of Arts this summer during the weekend of the 25th and 26th June. This event is fun, fascinating and unique with 15 internationally acclaimed sculptors, 'live' carving bas relief plaques (to be silent auctioned during the weekend) along with dozens of artists and artisans demonstrating, exhibiting and selling their works. There will be various live entertainments and a variety of refreshments including a Pimm's Parlour, Dorset cream teas and wine bar. Once again we are creating a "Wall of Art" featuring autographed doodles on small canvasses by famous people. Raffle tickets for these will be available during the weekend and the draw will take place on
Sunday evening at 5.30pm. At our last event we collected doodles from 27 famous people including Joanna Lumley, Graham Norton, Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Lewis Hamilton, Sir Henry Cooper and many more. This year we hope to have a bigger and more diverse wall of art. There will be ample parking and lavatory facilities for both able bodied and disabled visitors. Please visit our website at shapwick.com/festival for more information with pictures.

Talking about wildlife with
Wildlife in your Garden Gardens are of great importance for local wildlife, providing food, shelter and nesting sites. Even the smallest garden can be made into a wildlife haven with a few simple measures. You will also benefit by having the pleasure of observing wildlife right from your doorstep. A mixture of native and non-native plants flowering at different times of the year will ensure food, nectar and pollen for birds and insects throughout the seasons. Primrose, heather and honeysuckle are good nectar plants; ivy and other climbing plants against bare walls give extra food and protection. A water feature such as a pond, even a small one, is a major attraction for birds, amphibians and dragonflies. By creating a pile of leaves or dead wood you’ll provide cold season shelter for hedgehogs, insects and toads. Attract birds to your garden by having a bird feeder, birdbath or a nestbox, making sure to keep your cat away from these. A compost bin will provide you with soil conditioner and make a home for many invertebrates. Most gardeners prefer their gardens pest-free, but it is best to rely on natural predators and organic pest control, as pesticides can harm or even kill the species you want to attract.
Ladybirds consume thousands of aphids in their lifetime, and hedgehogs and birds snack on slugs, helping to keep a natural balance. A wildlife garden does need basic maintenance such as regular pruning but it is also beneficial to leave some areas undisturbed with the grass uncut, thus creating extra wildlife habitat.

Local children celebrate in the woods A group of lucky children enjoyed an unforgettable Birthday Party at Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood on Saturday 26 March. The Party was held to celebrate the anniversary of the first ever Ranger led Birthday Party at the Park. These parties offer children of all ages a unique opportunity to celebrate their birthday outdoors. Altogether Moors Valley offers a choice of eight differently themed birthday experiences that range from bug hunting as a nature detective and building your own campfire and shelter to cycling adventures and expert fishing tuition. All the children who took part on the day were invited to the party after winning their tickets in a competition and four different parties took place around the Park. Ben, Sam and Tom Matthews from Bournemouth took part in the Build it Party, which involved building their very own ladybird box, bird box or bird table to benefit the wildlife in their garden. Ben
12
and his brothers enjoyed making their own bug box while learning how to saw and hammer under the supervision of the Moors Valley Rangers. Ben said, “It’s Dad’s birthday today too, so it’s a double celebration!” The Birthday Party was really one to remember and in addition to this packed day the children also enjoyed a ride on the Moors Valley Steam Railway and had the chance to leave their mark by signing Moors Valley’s giant Birthday Card. Birthday Parties at Moors Valley offer children a fun and exciting way to learn about the natural environment and the wildlife which lives there. The children actively experience and explore the outdoors for themselves, making for a truly memorable adventure! You can organise your children’s Birthday Party at Moors Valley Country Park by contacting the Education Rangers on 01425 470721. Photo courtesy of J J Walker

Award-winning schoolgirls tame dragon GIRLS from a Bournemouth secondary have helped a notorious dragon launch a national search to find fresh talent like them. Pupils from Avonbourne School were chosen to assist Dragon’s Den entrepreneur Peter Jones who is leading a £400,000 in itiative to unleash an entrepreneurial spark in UK schoolchildren. Called the ‘Tenner Tycoon’ the Bournemouth girls were last year’s national winners for their inspiring community project Internet Rangers, which helps OAPs become online savvy. The Avonbourne project saw the girls tutor elderly residents in internet skills such as using email, booking train tickets and researching hobbies online. Former Blue Peter presenter Valerie Singleton OBE visited the school to support the project; the girls won awards for the scheme including one from BT, and were invited to Number 10 and the Houses of Parliament to tell ministers about their work. They have also been the subject of TV documentaries and their latest foray into the media spotlight to launch this year’s Tenner Tycoon saw them take part in a photo shoot at famous Worx studio in London as well as feature on BBC News and GMT.
They have also appeared in national newspapers including the Telegraph and Times. “This scheme is a superb opportunity for students to experience what the life of an entrepreneur can be like,” said Kathryn Loughnan, Avonbourne’s head of ICT and Internet Rangers’ mentor. “With a little risk, some creativity and a can-do attitude they might find they have launched a whole new business concept.” This year’s Tenner Tycoon will see more than 40,000 young people across the UK encouraged to start their own business using a £10 note. Organisers Enterprise UK, an enterprise campaign agency, says the aim is to inspire entrepreneurship in young people against a backdrop of “the worst youth unemployment figures in a generation”. Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, West Circular A 5 mile walk with great views. It has an optional steep climb up the 204 steps to St Alban’s/St Aldhelm’s Head on the main route. This can be avoided with a small detour. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. There is a small parking fee. Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right for about 70 metres and then take the path signposted ‘Church and Hill Bottom 1 mile’. Follow this through the gate and field until you reach the left-hand corner. Here turn right and follow the hedge/ wall for about ½ mile until you meet a T junction. Turn left and follow the path towards Hill Bottom. Just before reaching the houses, turn left through the kissing gate (1/3 mile). You are now on the Coast Path. The path ascends to the ridge above Chapman’s Pool and along to the war memorial (maintained by the MOD, 2/3 mile). Go over the stile onto Emmet’s Hill, follow the cliff path along to the top of another big dip in the Coast Path (1/2 mile), just prior to St
Albans/St Aldhelms Head. Descend the path to the dip at the bottom. Here, you can continue straight ahead and ascend the steps to the top where there is a seat to rest and the Coastguard lookout station or you can turn left over the stile, follow the less steeply-inclined valley to the top, then turn sharp right and return to the Coastguard station along the track. At the Coastguard station, continue along the coast path to Winspit (3/4 mile), turn left as you enter the old quarry and return up the valley to the village and straight past the duck pond. At the Square and Compass pub, stay left and the car park is on the left..
