July already! The children will soon be off school and many of us we will taking our yearly holiday. It is always such an exciting time. We just hope the sun will shine and we can all get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air. Nellie did take us for a refreshing evening out, with a momentary ‘blip’, which you can read about on page 38. We are looking forward to our camping trip very soon! Whatever you have planned this summer we do hope you make the most of it, have some family time and generally get out and about.

The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race.

This problem is not unique to the Pacific.

There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.

The knock on effect is a catastrophic loss of marine habitat and marine life as well as other wildlife and birds in particular. Small islands, already being swallowed up by the rubbish patches, become uninhabitable and an increasing amount of rubbish is being swept up on our coastlines.

Talking about Wildlife...

The Magic of Butterflies Butterflies are one of the most idolised insects in Britain. Their beautiful colourings add to the landscape and bring a smile to those who catch sight of them.

The ideal habitat of a butterfly is dependent on the time of year and the species. Some species thrive in lowland forests, whilst others prefer wetlands, mountains or grasslands. Not all butterflies live in one single habitat, however.

Despite the decline of butterflies in the last few decades, Dorset remains a stronghold, with summer the best time to enjoy the colour of the forty-odd resident species around the county. Britain’s most widespread blue butterfly, the Common Blue, is visible all summer long, breeding twice a summer in the South. Dorset’s rich landscape of grasslands, heaths and meadows is ideal for supporting this easily recognisable butterfly.

The large majority of butterflies only survive for two to four weeks, but those who survive through winter - monarch butterflies and mourning cloaks - can live up to 9 months. This means they have to pass on their genes quickly.

Butterflies identify a suitable mate by the markings on their wings; each species has a unique marking. Certain species also have specific flight patterns, which they use

in courtship. Both the male and female will assess the performance of their potential mate and will judge whether or not they are a suitable companion.

Butterflies taste with their feet and only consume liquids. Their diets generally consist of nectar and mud puddles, which contain important nutrients.

This summer, some of the best Dorset Wildlife Trust reserves to see butterflies are: Fontmell Down nature reserve, Powerstock Common, Portland quarries nature reserves, Haydon Hill and Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve.

It’s a great thing to be celebrating our 20th anniversary. ORCA was inaugurated at a public meeting in May 1995. We still have some original members and many more have joined along the way.

The Margaret Craig Room was named after our founder, who worked tirelessly with a group of Oakdale residents to get use of the building as a community centre after the school closed. ORCA got use of the hall, classroom and office in 1997.

We have had many successful summer fairs, car boots, quizzes, trips and activities since then, and lots of tea, coffee and biscuits!  If you have any photos to join our history gallery please bring them in or post or email, thanks.

We had a great deal of cake to share on Sunday 7th June at the big lunch picnic gathering on Oakdale Park field as part of our celebration year and it was lovely to have community together on such a lovely sunny day.

Room Bookings -Since the hall was demolished in July 2014, we now have just The Margaret Craig room to use and hire out. That’s the room that we use for Acorns coffee shop in the mornings. We really need to have the room used more and would like to hear from anyone interested in a regular booking - it is available afternoons and evenings.

In ACORNS Community Coffee Shop Tuesdays mornings – scrabble. Thursdays mornings you are invited to bring in your own handicrafts to work on. We now have an ‘Ideas2Action’ collection box in Acorns. Bring in your empty biscuit wrappers to deposit. The idea is that they are recycled and turned into useful items such as pencil cases.

We need a few new members and membership forms are displayed outside the ORCA office at the Centre.

Activities report - At the Easter Art Exhibition there were 98 entries of work by students with Skills & Learning. Artists were delighted at the response by visitors and we hope to work with S&L again. In April we had a Coach trip to Sidmouth and the Donkey Sanctuary The donkey sanctuary was delightful and this photo was taken at the metal donkey statue that welcomes everyone.

Sting and Trudie Styler host family day for Julia’s House Julia’s House families became the guests of Sting and Trudie Styler after the couple hosted an event for them in the grounds of their Wiltshire home.

More than 170 of the mums, dads and children supported by the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospices enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing day in the beautiful gardens near Amesbury.

Activities included tree-climbing, a wheelchair-friendly zip wire, crafts, music, tennis, games complementary therapies and lunch in a marquee on the croquet lawn.

Trudie and Sting popped up throughout the day, mingling, chatting and posing for pictures with families. One of the high points for the children was when Trudie brought out some of her pets including Irish wolfhound puppies and a Shetland pony.

Sting & Trudie Styler with some of the children Trudie offered to host the family event after finding out about Julia’s House at a fundraising clay pigeon shoot organised by the charity’s patron Guy Ritchie last year.

As they left, parents wrote thank you notes for Sting and Trudie which were later turned into a booklet and sent to the couple. Among the messages were: “You made us all feel so welcome and we felt very touched to be part of it all”; “the effort, care and love that went into organising such a beautiful day was overwhelming. Family days like these are very rare and we cherish every memory”; “it means so much to us to have days of happiness like these”; “an amazing family day to treasure for always”.

Julia’s House plans to build a children’s hospice in central Wiltshire within the next couple of years. This will enable the charity to expand its current small south Wiltshire home-based respite care to the rest of the county.

Medicine Bend - Formed in the early 70s, Medicine Bend had a short but illustrious career. Signed by major label Neon in 1974, an album of English country rock classics were recorded but never released, when the label went under. Disillusioned the band spilt, the members going various ways. So here for one night only, the sole surviving members showcase a few of those never released songs.

Hill Folk Noir are Travis and Alison Ward with Mike Waite from Boise, Idaho, USA. Their rollicking roadhouse, good time stomp is deeply infectious. They draw from a sepia toned Grapes of Wrath America with half forgotten dustbowl songs depicting gamblers, gangsters, whisky stills and loose women, all very fine topics. It’s a music that is just made for dancing and drinking beer, two very good reasons why we are very pleased to have them with us.

The Mountain Firework Company with front man Gareth McGahan, have already a built up an impressive following both here in the UK and also the US. Their reputation has rapidly grown since their release of their second album The Lonesome Losing Blues, which is full of strong and memorable songs. They have been called ‘Folkgrass’ and comparisons and with the Waterboys and Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance are inevitable, but spot on. It all makes ideal music for long lazy summer days.

Hillfolk Noir

New Hawleans Jug Band - a Surrey collective who major on the Jug Band sounds of Beale Street and in particular the Memphis Jug Band, who sang on street corners for nickels and dimes but had a thriving record career until the Great Depression hit the race records market.

They dress in period style and have a rollicking good time.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside.

The weather has been so much better recently and we have had some beautiful evenings, so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We did exactly that last week.

Hayden had gone to scouts, leaving Stephen and I some time on our own for a couple of hours. We all live such busy lives and I just needed a walk to clear away the hustle and bustle of the day.

Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magnificent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight.

It was a gorgeous evening as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along the ‘path’. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and flourish. While we were there we saw cattle, ‘wild’ horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists.

There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden up…or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. It is also possible, as Stephen and I can attest, to take an even shorter route if you are not feeling quite so energetic.

I really must be getting old! To be honest on a good day, picnic and a

29 bottle of water in hand, this would be a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the peace and quiet while observing nature at its best.

Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car!

I couldn’t believe it.

I waited a while thinking whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there.

I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!), and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it.

The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this,

breathed a sigh of relief. My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking.

It must be all the fishing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the float landing in the water. Those were the days!

Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory.

If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be … or maybe it is, if a car parks in front of you!

He also told me he made a window for a couple in West Moors some years ago. This is where I live so I popped round to see Mrs Hudson.

Have you got the drive to take up the Challenge?

Dorset Blind Association launches new Driving Challenge on 19th July at Bovington. Drive vehicles from car transporters to rally cars to raise funds to support services for blind people.

Dorset Blind Association invites companies and individuals to take part in their brand new Driving Challenge on 19th July. The event, will take place at the home of the British Army in Bovington. Participants have the chance to drive a bin lorry, More Bus, fire engine, an armoured vehicle, rally car, or event drive a car blindfolded!

There will also be a chance for blind and visually impaired members of the Dorset Blind Association to take part in their own driving challenge with the assistance of 2nd To None Driving School.

Community & Events Fundraiser Jannine Loveys said “We wanted to do something a little bit different as a fundraising event and to engage more supporters thus raising awareness

of the work that we do. This event is a great way for everybody to get together regardless of their level of sight, so that members of the public can gain more understanding about people with sight loss and the difficulties they face.”

It costs £325 a year to support each blind or partially sighted person through vital services such as such as a community support worker, social and activity clubs and home visiting volunteers. These services reduce isolation and allow people with sight loss to enjoy life: events like this help to raise the much needed funds.

Dorset Blind Association receives no funding from the government or the RNIB and therefore relies on fundraising events such as this to fund their work. With over 30,000 people in Dorset living with serious sight loss, this is a much needed service.

Start them young!

Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?

I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Jobs for July:Make last sowings of carrots and French beans.

Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes.

Sow Spring cabbage.

Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag).

Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.

While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks?

If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home.

Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds natural pest control!

Keen young growers can browse seed

packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes.

Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans?

They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves.

Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm.

Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

The Gardens of Oakdale Library At the busy crossroad at Oakdale, you can sit in a little haven of peace and quiet surrounded by the bussing of bees and the songs of birds as well as the perfume of Honeysuckle, Lilac, Buddleia and many more. Where is this haven?

It is, of course, Oakdale Library Reading Garden, tucked away at the back of the Library. This garden was created

by Creekmoor with Oakdale Women’s Institute and Library Volunteers in just four months, and is still tended each week by the dedicated group to make

Mosaic and Poppy Bed for crosses to be placed on Remembrance Day. Once again this Garden was created in four months, and the bench was a donation by a W.I. Member, and the path made by a local business. The Poppy was made by two members of the Volunteers and W.I. It is hoped this year we will once again hold a Service of Remembrance in the Garden, when everyone is welcome to attend.

Why not come along and have a look at the Library and Garden, as well as

sure it stays ‘this little haven’. If you have never visited, why not pop into the Library, pick up a book and a cup of tea or coffee, and wander around to the garden, where there are plenty of benches for you to sit and read. (All the benches were donated by local people and the larger structures by local businesses.)

After the success of the Reading Garden, the group went on to make a Commemorative Garden at the front of the Library with a Poppy

supporting the work of ‘The Garden Gang’, they just love to see people enjoying the Garden.
