First Wellness Day draws crowds to Poole Poole Business Improvement District (BID) hosted its first Wellness Day in the town centre on Saturday, June 1, for more than 800 visitors to the town centre.

A range of business in the health and wellbeing sector were involved, such as Poole Enviroteers, Livewell Dorset, Barbara Cox Nutrition, Nuffield Health and more.

Justin Hundley-Appleton, Poole BID manager, commented: “It’s so important to keep track of your health and wellbeing, and by finding out the different

organisations we have on our doorsteps will help to manage this going forwards.

“We’d like to extend our thanks to all the weekend’s exhibitors and businesses that took part and helped everyone to gain a greater understanding of what is involved.”

Visitors were encouraged to take part in a range of activities including CPR workshops provided by Nationwide, make bath bombs with Lush and children were able to learn circus skills with Jamie Jigsaw.

Dolphin in Dorset Waters In the UK we are very fortunate to have a variety of whale, dolphin and porpoise species that inhabit our waters year round. Sometimes you have to venture out to sea to encounter these marine mammals however sometimes they approach us. Danny, a male bottlenose dolphin has frequented the Dorset coastline, appearing between Portland and Poole since summer 2018 and occasionally seeks out human contact.

Since he rarely interacts with other dolphins and prefers to live alone but in the vicinity of people he is known as a “solitary dolphin”. It is understandable that people want to get closer to dolphins, however for the welfare of both Danny and the public it is vital that they respect this is a wild animal and do not indulge his inquisitive nature by entering the water or approaching in a vessel closer than 100m. With the summer season upon us it is vital that the public are advised on how to act around the dolphin. As an example concerns were raised during the recent Poole Boat Harbour Show when, over this period, the dolphin was disturbed by excess boat traffic, with many vessels specifically approaching him.

Although it can be tempting to try to get close to these marine mammals, it is always best to view them from a safe and respectful distance, both for their safety and the public’s. Dolphins need their space and as a bottlenose dolphin, Danny is afforded a high level of legal protection from national and European legislation, including from wilful interference. Marine Connection works within the Marine Animal Rescue Coalition (MARC) Solitary

Dolphin Working Group. Our aim, when dolphins such as Danny appear around the UK coastline, is to develop action plans tailored to the protection of each individual solitary dolphin to ensure that they are not harmed or killed. Danny’s welfare is of utmost concern and we all need to work together to protect this accessible dolphin.

Marine Connection’s Programmes Officer Liz Sandeman comments “Dolphins are enigmatic mammals and the excitement they cause when they appear off our shores and people’s wish to see or get closer to them is understandable. However it is vital that the public respect that these are wild mammals that bear no resemblance (except physically) to those in a captive environment and caution around them is required for the safety of the individual animal and other water users. People should view the dolphin from the shoreline and if in a vessel, not change direction to pursue the animal but keep on their original course. We have legislation which makes it a criminal offence in the UK to harass a dolphin therefore maintaining a respectful distance ensures that people are able to view this wild dolphin in his natural environment safely, without any threat to the animals’ welfare.”

My Week at RDF Television This year we were joined by Grace Taylor from Bournemouth School for Girls on work experience. We invited her to share some of the other things she had been involved in at her previous location.

For a week of my work experience, I worked in a television production company in London. It was an amazing week that I was privileged to be able to do. All the people were really welcoming, and it was because of them that I was able to fully enjoy the opportunity.

On my first day, I sat in on a brainstorm for a new programme for Amazon prime. It was truly awe-inspiring to see how the development team’s minds worked.

The way that their ideas all flew around the room was mind-blowing.

The next day was also very interesting and I got to see what it was like for a Runner. These are the people that are there to do all the little, yet vital, jobs. It was very important for me, as someone who wants to work in the industry, to have an insight into the less glamourous parts. Despite this, I was still as ready as ever to get stuck into the television industry.

The third day brought another brainstorm and even more inspiration. For the rest of the day after that, I was doing research for the development team. I never knew how much work went into getting a programme picked up by a company, and that’s just the first step! They had me finding pictures for possible “thumbnails” for the show.

The last 2 days brought even more intrigue. I was given an amazing tour of all the camera equipment.

Who ever knew there were so many different types of tripods? Also, I helped the team of Science of Stupid take inventory of the props needed for their experiments. This gave me the chance to know what it’s like to work on a running production.

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience and I am so grateful to RDF Television for allowing me to have it. It has not only shown me that I do want to work in television, but also made me excited for the future.

Summer wildlife

At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start…

At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars!

Dorset County Show celebrates four years of providing local schools with farm visits Dorchester Agricultural Society’s Education Fund, known as Fabulous Food and Farming, continues to support local schools and organisations to gain further knowledge on agriculture within Dorset.

As a rural charity, Dorchester Agricultural Society works hard all year round to achieve its main objective, the promotion of agriculture within the county. A major part of the charitable activities that the Society undertakes is its Education Fund, which has enabled more than 1,000 school children to visit Dorset farms since it was established four years ago. The fund has also assisted with various projects within school grounds, seeking to improve children’s knowledge of food production, animals and horticulture.

Dorchester Agricultural Society has distributed more than £10,000 across the county, helping with transport and the cost of school visits, as well as projects such as constructing fruit cages and starting a chicken enterprise. Schools and organisations are encouraged to apply for funding to cover any projects that help to develop a better understanding of farming, horticulture, rural business and the countryside in Dorset.

Alastair Cowen, president of Dorchester Agricultural Society, commented: “Charity work is very important to Dorchester Agricultural Society, and something which I am extremely passionate about.

“By helping to fund their transport it has given pupils the opportunity to visit our local farms when they might not have had the chance otherwise. This is something which we are proud of as we believe it is essential that children are educated on rural life.”

The Society’s work is extended each year by donating a complimentary pair of tickets for Dorset County Show to every school in Dorset to be used as part of any school fundraising activities. This year over 130 tickets have been distributed across the county.

Dorchester Agricultural Society was formed in 1840 and is responsible for organising some of Dorset’s most recognisable agricultural events, including Dorset County Show, which attracts 60,000 people across the two-day event, taking place on September 7 and 8, 2019. 2018 saw the introduction of the Fabulous Food and Farming education area, which includes hands-on learning stations and displays, partnering with a number of local businesses and providers. This year the section is due to expand with the introduction of more activities and stations including a farming simulator, a bicycle powered smoothie maker and advice on healthy eating.

What rights do homeowners have when a neighbour’s tree overhangs their garden?

A homeowner is responsible for maintaining any tree or hedge that falls within their boundary, however, the owners of the tree have a duty of care to ensure that the tree is safe. If the tree is protected, an application to the Council is required.

How would I know/find out if a tree is protected?

Some councils show protected trees and conservation areas online, where others require you to contact them. As part of our service, we will investigate if your trees are protected and complete any necessary applications on your behalf.

If a tree is uprooting a drive can anything be done?

Yes, root pruning can be carried out which in most cases will overcome this problem.

In more extreme circumstances, tree removal can be an option.

Do you charge for quoting?

Explaining... Lasting Power of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document which legally enables one or more individuals you know and trust, your Attorneys, to have the Power to make decisions on your behalf if you lose Mental Capacity (capacity). Unlike a Will which deals with your estate when you are no longer here, an LPA deals with your Financial and Care decisions while you are alive but lack capacity. There are two types of LPA; a Property and Financial LPA, and a Health and Welfare LPA. Plan for the Future Contrary to beliefs like, “I would never need an LPA”, or “My next of kin will get the final say”, the reality is that everyone needs an LPA, regardless of age or current mental health status. A former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice said in 2007 when LPA’s were first introduced, “We all know how important it is to plan for the future. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place should be as common and natural as making a Will”. Less than 1% of the adult UK population has an LPA. However, 1 in 3 persons on average over the age of 65 in the UK develop dementia (Alzheimer’s Society), and every 90 seconds someone in the UK, is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (Headway).

Four reasons why you should make and register both types of LPA. 1. Choice. You retain the choice of who to appoint as your Attorney’s and how they should act. If you lose capacity without an LPA in place the Court of Protection will have to appoint a Court Deputy to make decisions on your behalf. There is no guarantee this would be someone you would want and could even be a stranger such as a professional listed on the court panel.

2. Costs. For the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputyship the initial application fee is £385 plus all legal fees and ongoing annual fees payable to the court. All of which can run into thousands of pounds. However, to register each LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is only £82.

3. Time. To register an LPA with the OPG currently takes 8/10 weeks. A Deputyship application is more time consuming and can take as long as 9 months or more at a time when you desperately need some immediate help.

4. Instructions. LPA’s allow you to specify any instructions you may have for your Attorney’s. These are legally binding and your Attorney’s must follow them.

The earlier an LPA is created and registered the better With an LPA document in place, you have peace of mind and full estate planning control. You would have specifically selected your Attorney’s and given them authority to make Financial and Care decisions on your behalf. LPA’s allow you to choose any Replacement Attorney’s and even a professional Attorney (such as a Trust Corporation), in case your primary Attorney’s are unable or unwilling to act. Finally, if you lack capacity but your Property and Financial LPA is not registered, your Attorney’s would not be able to access your bank accounts to pay for expenses such as care home fees until after they validate your LPA when it is officially stamped and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. If you hold an account jointly with someone else they will find themselves unable to operate the account until an LPA or Deputyship order is produced to the bank.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Dorset Directories Camper Van Oh, Daichi the Dashing Dude, our wonderful new Dorset Directories campervan was in full spirits this month and ever so excited to be taking us for our first full camping trip. Nellie, his Grandmother, had told him all about the New Forest Caravan and Motorhome Club Centenary Site in the New Forest.

He could not wait. It was a rather good weekend too, so we did not have to worry about getting wet and cold. Well, that is for later…

One of the main advantages of “Dash” is that he has a really nifty ‘lid’ in that it opens along the side of the van and not from front to back as Nellie’s roof lifted. This means there is a tent-like structure inside the van once the roof is fully opened. Not only can we stand up entirely inside, but Hayden, who is 15 and now taller than me, can not only lie down in the ‘upstairs bedroom’, but can also sit up and read too! This is a huge advantage for a teenager who likes his own space. We, the adults, can sit

Daichi settles in for the night... ‘downstairs’ quite happily without needing the awning. For a short trip this is really useful. The Dashing Dude is big enough to take all of us with no squabbling. Bonus!

Being a youngster and ever wanting fun, Daichi had brought the I-Spy books which were perfect for a campsite. “I-Spy Camping” and “I-Spy Vehicles of the Road” were a great entertainment. If you have never tried these, you can get them at any good book shop or online. They can keep children (and us adults…) occupied for hours. We walked around the campsite finding all sorts of different caravans, awnings, cars, trucks and bikes. Daichi was thrilled we had so much fun.

The next day he had planned a Treasure Trail starting at Keyhaven near Milford on Sea. Now I am not a walker and Daichi knows that well, so he tricked me into doing a near seven-mile walk! Really, I could not believe it - seven miles! I have never done that before. The trick you see

29 is to keep me busy… busy looking for clues. One after the other this trail took us from Keyhaven amenity car park to Milford on Sea centre, to Shorefield Holiday Park (how many caravans?) and finally back along the coast! We did it, and boy was I glad to see the pub (now now…) and have a seat in the garden to enjoy lunch, even if it was a bit on the chilly side by then. A well-earned rest was had by all and Daichi was smiling from headlight to headlight, showing off his bright-white grill.

As if that was not enough… the following day we went to the New Forest Aqua Park for a friend’s 50th Birthday Party! This watersports park happens to have 2 trampolines, monkey bars, flippers, slides, hurdles, springboard, rockers, rollers, an overhang climbing wall, a swing and a giant iceberg. Seriously, are we having a laugh? How old do you think I am?

Well in fact all 12 friends, yours truly and another excepted, donned on wetsuits and off they went. Daichi was told he was too heavy and there were no wet suits big enough to fit his muscular, Herculean body.

He just strutted his stuff and puffed out his wing mirrors in indignation.

Men… After an hour of slip-sliding away, bouncing on air beds, climbing on wet slippery ropes and hauling themselves back onto the floating rafts, the gang came back all smiling (or was it grimacing?) and totally exhausted.

It was a weekend full of highspirited activity (and it wasn’t just the wine). Daichi is proving to be quite an asset I have to say. He maybe a little too energetic for an over 50 mature lady… or maybe not. He may just keep me young at heart! Where will the Dashing Dude take us next - I wonder?

Parkstone Detachment: Dorset Army Cadet Force I’d like to take a moment to thank the Publishers of The Poole Directory for giving me the opportunity to share the news about Parkstone Detachment, Army Cadet Force.

This month has had a huge focus on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). Following on from an interest presentation from the Company DofE officer, we have now signed up the majority of the Cadets onto the award with the rest being too young. The award was created by Prince Phillip in 1956 to provide a real adventure from the beginning to the end for 14-25 year olds and to provide vital skills for life through Volunteering, Physical, Skill, Residential and Expedition sections. The award offers three levels which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and an invite to meet royalty at Buckingham or St. James’ Palace.

Within the Army Cadet Force, we offer this opportunity for an extremely low cost of £22 for Bronze and Silver and £28 for Gold. Cadet Sergeant Erin Blake undertook her DofE Silver Assessed Expedition in West Dorset where she faced 3 days and 2 nights of heat, hills and walking distance but she came out victorious, completing the section and moving closer to completing the Award. The team worked very well together and were kept motivated with the help of seeing cows which looked like pandas and were nicknamed ‘fluffy moo moos’ and a lasting friendship which was made on the way.

Navigation over Hengistbury Head

Within a month of joining Army Cadets, Jacob Burnham undertook a Navigation assessment at Hengistbury Head with Cadets from Christchurch Detachment. Despite his initial worry that he didn’t know anyone going, he persevered and learnt how to orientate and find his position on the map. Lieutenant Elsson who organised the event said “I was pleased with how Jacob did” and he has now passed his Basic Navigation, moving him closer to starting the next level of progressive training. Cadet Burnham is quickly progressing with regular attendance and an attitude to get stuck in which is the makings of a potential promoted Cadet in the future.

Inspirational Care South Home Manager invited to HRH the Queen’s Garden Party Emma Cotton, Home Manager at Care South’s newest home, Alexandra House was recently invited to attend HRH the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Every summer, The Queen invites more than 30,000 people from all walks of life to garden parties at Buckingham Palace and Holyroodhouse. Most guests are invited for their significant contributions to local communities and the party is designed to recognise and reward all attendees.

Emma was nominated by Care South’s Chairman, Felicity Irwin DL to attend the special occasion for her contribution to the community through her work as Home Manager of Alexandra House and other Care South homes.

Accompanied by her husband, Emma joined Her Majesty the Queen for tea, as well as His Royal Highness Prince Harry, Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie, Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and the Duke of Gloucestershire.

Invited guests enjoyed entertainment from the Queen’s royal band along with 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cakes.

Emma Cotton said: “The afternoon was so very special, and I feel privileged to have been selected to attend on behalf of Care South.

It is a memory that I will treasure forever and will never forget.”

On Your Plot Start them young

I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans.

Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes.

Sow Spring cabbage.

Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag).

• Remember to feed your tomatoes.

• As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes.

• Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.

Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?

While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks?

If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into

the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home.

Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control!

Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves.

Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm.

Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.

Four Endangered Primate Infants Arrive at Monkey World in 2019!

Monkey World has welcomed four more infant primates to the park in 2019, all of whom are at risk of extinction in the wild. Three have been born at the park, and one is an orphan, adopted into a group here, but all are endangered and their lives are pivotal for their species as a whole.

Rescue centres such as Monkey World are progressively leading the way in wildlife conservation worldwide, and becoming hotspots for battling the illegal wildlife trade. While Monkey World provides a home for the refugees of the illegal trade, it also has an important role to play in conservation through working with rescue centres in countries which these primates come from as well as research into species that little is known about. By contributing to the conservation of four endangered species, the rescue centre hopes the future will be bright not just for the new arrivals at the park, but for the future of the species too.

Rare Guenons Confiscated from Lebanese Airport Make a Family Monkey World has recently celebrated the birth of a baby red-bellied guenon. Mother, Nia, is doing a fantastic job, with a strong healthy baby as a result. She can be seen often taking her baby outside to enjoy the Dorset sunshine.

Red-bellied guenons are endemic to Benin and are not found anywhere else in the world - apart from Monkey World. In 2018, Dr Alison Cronin, Monkey World Director, travelled to Lebanon to rescue a pair of guenons who had been hunted from the wild, smuggled from Benin to Ghana, and then into Beirut on a passenger plane.

Red-bellied guenons are under threat in the wild, with their populations decreasing by 50% over the last 30 years due to deforestation and hunting. Back at the park, the two smuggled monkeys regained their health, and put on

Orang-utan Nursery Proving Vital for European Orphans In March 2019, another orphaned orangutan moved to the park in order to grow up with others of its own kind. Hujan was born at Zoo Krefeld, in Germany but had to be hand-reared as his mother became ill soon after birth.

Although the keepers attempted to reintroduce him to the group, the adults would not accept him, and so he needed a new family. As European Orang-utan Crèche, Monkey World takes in any orang-utans orphaned or rejected in zoos or wildlife parks – to date Monkey World has received orphans seven orphans from five different countries. 41 their own kind gives orang-utans the skill and knowledge to raise their own young in the future. Both species of orang-utan, Bornean and Sumatran, are critically endangered as a result of deforestation for palm oil plantations and from poaching for the illegal pet trade and entertainment industry, so it is vital that mothers care for their babies and the cycle of abandonment is broken. Now at 18 months old, Hujan is joining a group with one adult male, three adult females and a juvenile female.

Slow Loris Birth at Monkey World Kicks Off Breeding Programme Slow loris are increasingly smuggled from the wild and killed for traditional medicine and bush meat, while the young babies are sold into the black market pet and tourist trade.

The shy nocturnal primates are completely unsuited to life during the day and find being handled particularly stressful - in fact they are the only primate able to deliver a toxic bite.

Because of their huge eyes and fluffy fur, their “cuteness” is killing them, and wild populations are rapidly decreasing. Monkey World has five loris at the park, all confiscated from the black market trades in Hong Kong, the Maldives, and Lebanon. We were delighted when one of the females, Nicki, gave birth however the baby was underweight and didn’t suckle, so the Monkey World team stepped in to care for the tiny 34g infant. Now at seven months old, the baby, named Bobbi Dazzler, is meeting Nora, a loris who was confiscated from a Beirut pet shop in 2018 as a youngster herself. Hopefully the pair will grow up together and eventually become mothers themselves one day.

Woolly Monkey Baby Adds to the World’s Largest Healthy Breeding Population Experienced woolly monkey mother, Pacaja, has given birth to a beautiful baby girl on March 23rd. Pacaja is a wonderful mother who is very relaxed in her child-rearing, previously raising daughter Oriana and son Claud. The baby

woolly monkey is the 22nd woolly monkey at the park, making Monkey World home to the largest population of healthy woolly monkeys in the world. These South American primates are prone to stress and high blood pressure and so are extremely difficult to keep and breed in captivity. Monkey World, however, has had enormous success over the years, due to the careful management of group dynamics, and the large choice of outdoor enclosures. The baby woolly monkey is settling into life with Paulo’s group, and proud mum Pacaja has been enjoying sunbathing with her new offspring in the warm weather. Monkey World hopes to pass on the knowledge gained from the breeding programme to in-situ rescue centres in range countries, to help bolster wild populations and save the species from extinction. In the wild this species Amazonian forest home is being decimated faster than any other forest in the world with more than 200,000 acres of forest destroyed since 2001 in Brazil alone and estimates that ¼ of the Amazon rainforest will be without trees by 2030.

Monkey World is open to the public every day, except Christmas. Visitors will see these beautiful rescued primates, being raised naturally with their own kind, and will be assisting with the rescue and conservation of some of the world’s most endangered primates.

MasterChef winner to visit the New Forest and Hampshire County Show Jane Devonshire, winner of MasterChef UK 2016 will be making an appearance at the 2019 New Forest and Hampshire County Show which is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August. Jane will be cooking live at The Kitchen by Chewton Glen in the Local Produce Market on Wednesday 31st July at 1.30pm. Jane will be cooking with fresh locally sourced produce from across Hampshire.

Visitors can meet Jane Devonshire after her demonstration at the Hampshire Fare stand in the Local Produce Market where she will be selling and signing copies of her new book ‘hassle free gluten free’. Since winning MasterChef in 2016, Jane Devonshire has taken the bull by the food horns and tested herself further by working with a number of top chefs including Marcus Wareing, Atul Kochhar, Jason Atherton, Michel Roux and Michael O’Hare at their restaurants. Since MasterChef’ inception, over 300 million viewers worldwide have tuned in to watch contestants transform their lives through a passion for cooking and the phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. Jane has presented at numerous food and drink shows around the UK, including the BBC Good Food Show. Her travels have taken her from Edinburgh to Brighton, in the course of which she has developed a love for presenting her recipes and chatting to people about food.

In addition to the live cooking demonstrations, The Local Produce Market will feature more than 50 tradestands selling locally produced products and produce. All tradestands are members of Hampshire Fare, New Forest Marque of Hampshire Farmers Markets. The Local Produce Market will also feature a food court where visitors can enjoy some locally produced food and drink.

The Local Produce Market is a wonderful celebration of Hampshire’s finest local producers and is certainly a must see section of the Show” The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August at New Park Brockenhurst. All tickets purchased online via the New Forest Show website before 23rd July will receive a 15% discount. This year all children aged 5-15 can enter the Show for just £1 with all proceeds from child ticket sales being donated to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary.

The Kitchen sponsored by Chewton Glen will also feature a busy timetable of cooking demonstrations from top local chefs each day including Matthew Whitfield from Montagu Arms, Beaulieu and James Durrant from Ideal Collection. James Durrant joined Gordon Ramsay’s Hospital Road shortly after it had won its third Michelin star.

Tastes so good...

Banana Loaf Cake

A delicious banana loaf that’s versatile enough to be served as breakfast, warm brunch or simply enjoyed with an afternoon cuppa.

Ingredients for 8 servings 4 medium sized ripe bananas 180g Whole Wheat flour 125ml Sunflower oil 125g Brown Sugar (amount can be adjusted to suit tastes) 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract ¼ tsp. Cinnamon Pinch of nutmeg powder (optional) 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds (optional) 1.5 tsp. Baking powder ½ tsp. Baking soda Pinch of salt

1. Preheat Oven to 180C. and lightly grease a loaf tin or rectangular cake

tin.

2. Add the sugar and bananas to a mixing bowl and mash well until pureed.

3. Add the oil, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg to the bowl and stir well.

4. Into the bowl, sieve the flour with the baking powder, baking soda and salt.

5. Fold the dry ingredients carefully and evenly ensuring it is well blended.

6. Add sunflowers seeds if chosen and gently fold.

7. Tip the mixture into the greased pan and bake for 35-40 minutes or until risen and a golden brown colour.

8. Remove the loaf when cooled from pan, slice and serve warm or cold.

9. The loaf is best kept in a lidded container in the fridge or wrap in cling film.
