We have a full Directory for you this month with lots of good local data‌ There is the Beer & Bluegrass Festival coming up in July. Branksome Library are holding a Roald Dahl Event. Dorset Wildlife Trust tells us all about meadows, whereas Martin Lewis tells us all about overdrafts. Karen Pitt is having a Music & Firework Festival in celebration of surviving cancer. Waggy Tails Rescue have a wonderful Husky X wanting a new home and Nellie, the Dorset Directories Campervan took us to The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! What fun we had and what great photos Stephen took. If you have any local news, then we can help you shout about it. We also like to shout about our loyal, local advertisers. If you have a testimonial about one or two of them, then please do send it to us. We will publish it to let everyone know what a great job they did. The lucky winner of the picnic table donated by Reformed Plastics was Maxine Almond! She was picked from over 600 entries, so very well done to her. This month you could win an Eco-Friendly Box from www.greenlife.world. Good luck with that one! Wishing you wonderful months of June and July,

Music and fireworks festival to celebrate surviving cancer A breast cancer survivor is organising a music and fireworks event to raise money for three causes including Bournemouth Hospital Charity. Karen Pitt, who is a member of Swing Unlimited Big Band, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2013. After two operations and a course of chemotherapy, she was given the all clear in May 2014, and says it was her friends and family that got her through. Karen said: “I found a lump before I was due on stage so I had to keep it to myself until after the gig. I was already booked to see my doctor for something else the next day so everything happened fairly swiftly for me.

evening’s entertainment. A hog roast and bar will also be open during the evening. Music will feature songs from Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and some of Swing Unlimited Big Band’s favourite and more unusual numbers. The evening will finish with a spectacular firework display while the band continues to play. Money raised from the event will be split between Bournemouth Hospital Charity - for the Jigsaw Building and medical equipment - Poole Hospital Radiotherapy and The Poole and District Children’s Cancer Fund

“My Swing Unlimited Big Band friends were amazing. They sent me flowers, texts and emails to cheer me up and this really helped me stay positive. I went to as many band practices as I could when I felt well enough and they always made me laugh. “The treatment I received was fantastic – it’s the reason I’m here today. I wanted to give something back and help others and that’s why I’m organising the Swing Unlimited Big Band Fireworks Spectacular. ” The event will take place at 7pm on 25 July at St Peter’s School in Southbourne. Tickets are available on the gate for £5 (under 10’s are free) and access to the field is from Broadway, Southbourne BH6 4EE and not via the school. Guests are invited to bring a picnic, blanket and fold up chairs to enjoy the

Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

Marvellous Meadows Rolling meadows with their rainbow colours and sounds of wildlife bring out the romantics and poets in many of us. Few relaxation techniques can compete with a stroll along a meadow, in a light summer breeze, with the sounds of insects humming, birds singing and small mammals scampering away. Meadows are quintessentially British, and an essential part of our landscape, but sadly their numbers have been reduced greatly in the last half century. Meadows may look wild, but in fact these open areas of grassland are man-made havens for wildlife. Over hundreds of years meadows have been carefully managed with traditional means of alternating cattle grazing in the winter with hay cutting in the summer, when meadows are closed for cattle. They support a complex and intricate ecosystem with hundreds of species of flora and fauna, and are of great ecological importance. One of the most important functions of todays’ meadows is supporting pollinators; bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. Common pollinator species inhabiting and buzzing around meadows are orange-tip, common blue and skipper butterflies, and bumble bees. A great part of the ecosystem depends on pollinators, and many plants and crops rely on them for their reproduction. Following the intensification of farming and development that took place after the war, pollinators have also decreased in numbers due to increasing popularity of pesticides and loss of many natural habitats. Meadows typically support dozens of species of various grasses and flowers, and the flora vary according to local climate and soil conditions. The varieties of grasses include quaking, sweet vernal-grass and crested dog’s-tail, and the species of flowers vary from snake’shead fritillary, devil’s-bit scabious and pepper saxifrage to various orchids, and many more.

In damp meadows, cuckooflower, ragged-robin and yellow iris can also be found. The multitude of grasses and flowers provide the pollinators with the vital nectar and pollen, and the insects in turn end up on the menu for birds, frogs and bats. Badgers, hares and rare farmland birds such as skylark all inhabit meadows, making them one of the most fascinating landscapes we have. Whilst meadows have been reduced drastically, there is good news as well; some have been protected as nature reserves, and meadow creation schemes such as ‘Coronation Meadows’ are creating new, “unimproved” meadows without the use of fertilisers. You can help us keep the magic of British of meadows intact for future generations and in ensuring that pollinators continue to thrive in this invaluable environment. Volunteering with your local Wildlife Trust and buying produce from local, traditionally managed farms are steps that take us closer to ensuring the future of our meadows. Dorset Wildlife Trust supports meadows preservation and will run the Kingcombe Meadows Reserve Wildflower Week Event on Wednesday 27 May 2015 10:30. This includes a walk through the reserve, looking at the flowers, folklore & history. Donation £2 to Dorset Flora Group welcome. By Niina Silvennoinen

16 Bournemouth Investments was established by Steve Chislett in 2001 and we cover an area within 130 miles of Bournemouth. Our clients are from all age groups, with over £75,000 of investable money (including pension funds), and also entrepreneurs looking for assistance and quality planning as they build their wealth through their business going forward. Typical clients would be those that are retired and need to obtain additional income or capital growth from their savings, rather than leaving it in the bank or building society, thereby losing the real value of their funds through inflation. We use a specialist technology system for client’s investments and pension funds and our clients benefit from monthly reporting either by email or post for suggested fund

changes. At this time, we are the only firm south of London, that uses this process. The system enhances returns over the medium term and reduces volatility. This means that we are in contact with you regularly, rather than waiting for an annual meeting to make necessary changes. Many clients in our area will be subject to inheritance tax on their estate if it is over £325,000 single or £650,000 joint (2013/14). We can assist with family trusts and other specialised tax planning to minimise the amount payable on death. We also advise on long term care costs. We would be pleased to meet you for a 30 minute consultation at our expense to see whether we can be of real long term benefit to you. So do give us a call on 01202 891852 to make an appointment.

How just 10 minutes on a Whole Body Vibration machine changed my life, disability and my size Shake and Tone Poole opened in August 2014, to offer people just a pinch of the health, fitness and wellbeing benefits that I experienced. In March 2009, due to a trivial accident where the seat came away from the base. I twisted to the side and back, landing on an out stretched arm, causing a whiplash injury, damaging the muscles in the back of my shoulder. My spine was slightly out of alignment, affecting my Sacroiliac joint, causing pain and stiffness to my hips. I also had sciatica down the back of my right leg. The bottom right side of my leg was completely numb. I lived in constant pain, which intensified to an unbelievable levels. I was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition and eventually Fibromyalgia? In spring 2013 after Aqua fit, a friend noticed my pain and suggested I went with her to “Flabs”? As soon as she told me they were vibration machines, I said “NO. I can’t use those. They set my pain off immediately. My friend explained that even though they are vibration plates, they move completely different to the gyms plates. These plates oscillate (not linear) and are a passive form of exercise. They are not as intense as the ones in the gym and she believed they would do me some good. I still said no! I didn’t want to take the chance and irritate the nerves more and go through that level of pain and discomfort again. The thought of vibration when you’re in pain, is far from appealing. In the end my friend pestered me for so long, that I agreed to go.

Was it all worth it? Yes!

When we got back to the car, she asked how I felt. I realised I didn’t hurt. I was amazed that after just 10 minutes, my pain had gone. I said, “Oh, I’m in the least pain I have been in for years.

I don’t hurt. I can feel where the pain should be, but it doesn’t’ feel like pain, it just feels like a thickness, probably where the muscles have locked up?” Her reply was “You’re also standing up straight”. Which I also hadn’t noticed. The immediate benefits I received after just that first 10 minute wobble, on an (Oscillating) Whole Body Vibration machine was remarkable to my health, wellbeing and fitness. My pain had gone, although the muscles were tight. My flexibility, mobility and posture was much better and my mood and energy had increased so much, in just a few hours, I felt amazing. I was like my old self for the first time since before my accident. (Thank you Sonya x) Since using an original FLABéLOS machine, my health, fitness and wellbeing have improved so much more. I have also gone from a size 20 to a 14! See our Testimonials page at www.shakeandtonepoole.co.uk. You have nothing to lose, other than inches! We offer a no obligation FREE session to new customers.

Adventures of Nellie

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Directories Camper Van Nellie loves this time of year…the time of Shows! We have so many different types of exhibitions, festivals and fairs that we really are very spoiled. From the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset Show in September, the Bournemouth Air Festival in August and the wonderful New Forest Show in July, to name but a few. Well this one was totally up Nellie’s street… The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! Nellie was rather excited to be going out. She had had ‘bronchitis’ and had been suffering for weeks, making a rather loud growling sound as she spluttered along. We were waiting for her new part to arrive all the way from Japan, so if anyone heard her, and to be honest she would have given the Formula One Racers a run for their money with all the noise she was making… we do apologise! So now with a new tube and a revived Nellie, off we went to the Wheels Festival. It was “Mayhem” in Zone 3! What a truck that was. This was a chance to have a ride on a huge truck, be thrown around and bounce up and down on the sand at speed. What fun.

Moving along to zone 2 there were Monster Trucks. OMG as the youngsters would say. Big Pete is massive. Nellie looks decidedly slim, yes slim, next to this beast of a machine. In fact Big Pete Ltd is the UK’s No1 most successful Monster Truck Team and has the ONLY female monster truck driver in Europe! Nellie was very impressed with her. You can check out their website at www.bigpete.org. Big Pete and Grim Reaper pulled a car apart in a tug of war, as if it was made of paper! They also climbed over a hill of sand, with two very squashed cars on top, as if kicking a plastic bottle out of the way. Easy. We also learned that ONE

Mayhem in action in Zone 3

Grim Reaper driven by Karen Shutler

Big Pete tries to jump to the Isle of Wight

29 new tyre costs £3000 and an extra £750 for the wheel, so we are rather pleased that Nellie doesn’t need shoes quite so big or expensive! Then, further along the populated promenade, well… oh… was Nellie’s dream. A red Lotus Esprit. Oh how she would love to look like a red Lotus Esprit. I am sure when she looks in the mirror, instead of seeing huge thighs and a big grin, she sees sleek, smooth, elegant lines. Probable much like I see Claudia Schiffer in the early 1990’s! Or is that Steve? Anyway… gorgeous, glistening and glamorous cars lined the street looking into the sunshine. Mmmmm…

Nellie dreams in the mirror...

Walking back up to the top, to the Overcliff were the famous Formula One Racers. Now if Nellie raced along at that speed (if only she could…) I am sure she would have been severely reprimanded - if they could have caught her of course! Today was a special day and the Overcliff had become an exhilarating race track. I do hope there

was noone staying in one of the hotels, hoping for a quiet romantic weekend, as they would have been rudely disappointed. The noise was amazing. The roars and the revving, incredibly powerful engines were invigorating. What a sight and sound. These cars are something else and driving one, so close to the ground at that speed, and let’s face it, this was probably slow in comparison to what they can do, must be a total trip. Incredible. There were lots of other events on different days at different times. Bournemouth was alive with go-go-go, roaring machines, yells of excitement, family and fun. Well done Bournemouth! Nellie had great fun and is definitely looking forward to more Shows. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Coral Interiors - Adding Value to Your Home We all know that first impressions are everything when it comes to selling a property. Yet it’s almost impossible to view our own homes with fresh eyes or impartiality, in fact, the longer we live somewhere the less likely we are to notice the minor cosmetic problems that may well put buyers off. Since you certainly can’t change your home’s location or its size quickly or easily, the one thing that you do have control over is the presentation. Home Staging is the art of dressing or ‘staging’ a home to appeal to the maximum number of potential buyers – in the most cost effective way. The more buyers who fall in love with your home, the more likely you are to meet or even exceed your asking price, and achieve a quick sale. Home Staging is the answer, and with costs that are easily recouped (and certainly much better for the bank balance when compared to the cost of

accepting a low offer!) provides a simple solution to achieving a hassle-free sale. A professional home stager will create that elusive wow factor, putting you streets ahead of any competition. Remember the best time to stage is before you go on the market so talk to us first – because you only get one chance to make a first impression! Call Helen at Coral Interiors on 01202 798837 or 07784 469334 to find out more, or to book your Home Review.

“We wanted to go back to a time when small festivals were fun and we have carefully selected a line up of great musicians who have that down home vibe and play good time Bluegrass and Americana, all played with verve and a smile, we think you will love it.”

FRIDAY 24th JULY 6.00pm - 11.30pm The highlight on Friday night is the wonderful Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys from Michigan USA for their first UK tour. Expect lush harmonies with a great Bluegrass resonating drive that typifies their unique sound. They are fresh from releasing Iona recorded using vintage equipment from which the standout track “The River Jordan“ is a masterpiece on which Lindsay’s vocal soars, against the dark mahogany accompaniment of the Flatbellys...magnificent.

Red Rooster Moving Co

Medicine Bend

Red Rooster Moving Co from Portland Oregon USA. Their recent travels have taken them to Italy where they have created a large following for their juke joint Americana style. They draw from the Guthrie songbook of hobos, boxcars and ballads from a pre-war America, all stamped with the Red Rooster imprint. Their music is infectious and contagious. Medicine Bend - Formed in the early 70s, Medicine Bend had a short but illustrious career. Signed by major label Neon in 1974, an album of English country rock classics were recorded but never released, when the label went under. Disillusioned the band spilt, the members going various ways. So here for one night only, the sole surviving members showcase a few of those never released songs.

Bow Legged Skeeters

Bow Legged Skeeters - Local Bluegrass favourites, they play authentic bluegrass with sweeping four part harmonies backed with some of the best picking you will see locally. Recently returned from a very successful Scandinavian tour they kick off both Friday and Saturday.

SATURDAY 25th JULY Noon - 11.30pm For such a young band, Flats and Sharps cut an experienced swagger, they quote the Delmore Brothers, the Louvin Brothers and of course Flats and Scruggs as major influences and it’s not hard to see why. Authentic four part harmonies combined with strong individual instrumental skills and buckets of charm, these lads will be huge, every time I have seen this band they have brought the house down and this will be no different!

Flats & Sharps

Hill Folk Noir are Travis and Alison Ward with Mike Waite from Boise, Idaho, USA. Their rollicking roadhouse, good time stomp is deeply infectious. They draw from a sepia toned Grapes of Wrath America with half forgotten dustbowl songs depicting gamblers, gangsters, whisky stills and loose women, all very fine topics. It’s a music that is just made for dancing and drinking beer, two very good reasons why we are very pleased to have them with us.

The Mountain Firework Company with front man Gareth McGahan, have already a built up an impressive following both here in the UK and also the US. Their reputation has rapidly grown since their release of their second album The Lonesome Losing Blues, which is full of strong and memorable songs. They have been called ‘Folkgrass’ and comparisons and with the Waterboys and Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance are inevitable, but spot on. It all makes ideal music for long lazy summer days.

Hillfolk Noir

New Hawleans Jug Band - a Surrey collective who major on the Jug Band sounds of Beale Street and in particular the Memphis Jug Band, who sang on street corners for nickels and dimes but had a thriving record career until the Great Depression hit the race records market. They dress in period style and have a rollicking good time.

DISCOVER Over 35 REAL ALES & LOCAL CIDERS ...with our Real Ale partners Yeovil Ales and Vibrant Forest and also our good friends at East Dorset Camra and Paul at the Firkin Shed. With their helpful guidance we have carefully selected a range of Ales and Ciders to delight and excite. They come from just down the road and lovingly brewed by the proverbial one man and his dog to the more established and respected names on the block. Both Yeovil Ales (Mandolin Wind) and Vibrant Forest (Lighting Express) have specially brewed an Ale for the Festival. There is a revolution in micro Cider making and we hope to showcase this with the very best of Ciders from Dorset and Devon. We hope with some surprises along the way!

Money Saving Tips

Martin

LEWIS Overdrafts Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how…

Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you're not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdraft, treating it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.

Get paid £100 to take a free overdraft. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdrafts who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdraft. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Alternatively for a potentially larger 0% overdraft there’s the www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. Yet it only gives you this overdraft for the first year, so ensure you use that time to clear the debt or afterwards it’s 50p a day.

Use savings (if you've any). Having overdrafts and savings isn't sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdraft at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, after tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you're £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdraft's paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: "But I'll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in." True, but in an emergency, access the overdraft you’ve paid off again and you'll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read www.mse.me/repaydebts.

Shift your overdraft to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shifting deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdraft, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good option if you’ve a bigger overdraft and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a one-off 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www.mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of getting. If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you'll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with MBNA that's 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-by-step help in www.mse.me/moneytransfers. Manage your way back into credit. Cutting the cost of your overdraft isn’t the end game, you should aim to always be in credit (or at least always within your overdraft when there’s no cost). To help do ask companies you pay to shift direct debits to near the end of your working month. If paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This artificially boosts your balance so you're in the red less - but don't spend the cash. Moving bill dates cuts fees, but won't tackle the overdraft. So sit down and do a budget to find out where you can cut back.

Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The options above won't help if your score's poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending until October even for those with a poor credit history. The www.luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shifting card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdrafts. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, day-to-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdraft to be repaid by your income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representative APR. "I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back." If you have an overdraft the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and getting stung with bank charges – these transaction fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transaction. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no solution. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admittedly now it's mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: "I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. Thanks." For full help and template letters on how to reclaim bank charges for free see www.mse.me/bankcharges. In dire straits? If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non-profit debt help from agencies like www.stepchange.org, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, and www.nationaldebtline.org. Don’t be scared to speak them, they’re there to help not to judge.

Want to live the good life? Try living in a green life world!

The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race. This problem is not unique to the Pacific. There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.

Product of the month

Bio-degradable Bags from £1.99 per pack!

The knock on effect is a catastrophic loss of marine habitat and marine life as well as other wildlife and birds in particular. Small islands, already being swallowed up by the rubbish patches, become uninhabitable and an increasing amount of rubbish is being swept up on our coastlines. Furthermore, it means changes in tidal and wave patterns the impact of which we may not understand for 100s of years. And if we do nothing... who knows where it stops. We have a responsibility to stop this. We caused it! So always remember the 4 ‘R’s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. And we can reduce the amount of plastic floating around in the world by choosing biodegradable options whenever we can. So check out our website and decide to live in a “green life” world. Traditional plastic bags take between 100 and 400 years to degrade and even then small particles will likely linger in the environment for 1000s of years. Our bags degrade fully within 12 to 18 months. We stock a full range of bags from large refuse sacks for rubbish and wheelie bins to smaller nappy sacks and dog waste bags. We also carry freezer bags (medium and large) and food waste caddy bags (in 3 sizes) which are even compostable!

Local consultant celebrating 5 year anniversary A dedicated slimming consultant, and mum of two, is celebrating 5 years in a role that helps people change their lives. Local Slimming World Consultant, Caroline Crane, who runs groups in Lilliput and Commercial Road, first joined a group herself as a member. “It was after being mistaken for five months pregnant in the school playground, when I wasn’t, that let me to seek out and join my local group,” she confides. “I received such a warm, friendly, welcome and the food was amazing, roast dinners, curry, homemade burgers with chips, and I could still enjoy a glass of rosé - I was hooked!” Caroline continues, “I couldn’t believe I could decide what I wanted to weigh, nobody told me, nobody judged me. It flew in the face of everything I thought about weight loss groups.”

“Quite quickly I lost two stone and when I achieved three, I decided it was time to give something back” says Caroline “I’d received great support on my own journey and in 2010 I was lucky enough to be offered the role of Consultant, with training, running my own group, helping people lose weight and live their dreams.” Then last year Caroline was selected to become a Team Developer, taking her career to another level, as she now looks after a team of seven consultants in Poole supporting over 4,000 members. “It’s been the best 5 years ever,” smiles Caroline. “Absolutely nothing can describe the feeling of seeing members in my group losing a lifechanging 68st 4lb in the last two months.” “At heart, I’m just a slimmer helping others,” she adds.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES New Ford Mondeo By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk

The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premium-badge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal. At launch, I tested the Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Duratorq TDCI. With 148bhp and 258 lb.ft of max torque, the Ford is able to dig deep at low revs, resulting in proper pulling power. Certainly, it’s easy to be blinded by the kudos of a premium badge but the Mondeo is brilliant whether in estate, five door hatch or four door hybrid semblances. It’s handsome, interior space is excellent,

the ride is smooth and the handling is spot on. The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors. The car is crammed with entertainment tech and safety gadgetry too. In fact it’s the most advanced Ford ever introduced in Europe, and has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. The Mondeo is the first car from the Blue Oval brand worldwide to offer Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This is designed to detect people in the road ahead – or that could cross the vehicle’s path – and automatically applies the brakes if you don’t respond to warnings at the wheel. Also introduced for the first time in Europe is Ford’s ground-breaking Inflatable Rear Seatbelt technology. In the event of an accident, the seatbelts expand to disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional belt. This offers valuable
