Talking about wildlife with

Heathlands wake up for spring As many species start making an appearance after the winter, spring is a good time to enjoy nature walks on the heaths. Dorset heathlands are amongst the most important in the country, providing a unique habitat year round for many rare and threatened species of wildlife. With the longer days of spring, reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are rare heathland specialists, the rarest snake and lizard in Britain and relying on heaths for their survival. The best time to see the elusive sand lizard is in April, when the males turn a stunning green for a short period of time to attract a mate. Of all the British reptiles, only the adder is poisonous, but they are shy and will try to avoid you. You are lucky if you get to admire one curled up to bask in the sun. Rare birds such as woodlarks and Dartford warblers are characteristic of heaths, and can be seen flitting amongst heather and gorse. From late February on, some will be building their nests on or near the ground, so make sure to stay on designated paths in order to avoid disturbing them and that goes for your dog too. Nightjars arrive from Africa any time from April and are similarly vulnerable, another reason why dogs have by law to be under close control during the breeding season. Representatives of the insect world can

be found in the springtime as well. The ex ot i c a nd co l o urf u l w asp sp id er emerges in April, as does the green tiger beetle. Heaths also contain more spider species than any other habitat in Britain and the heathland ponds and bogs are good for dragonflies. Heathlands are of great environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced and fragmented in the last few decades. To help preserve this unique environment and its vulnerable wildlife, keep to the paths, clear up after your dog and keep him on a lead from February to August. Follow the heathland code at w w w . d o r s e t w i ld l i f e tr us t . o r g. u k / heathlandcode. Heathland Visitor: Dartford Warbler

STARLIGHT STROLL

A Midnight Walk with The New Beehive for Lewis Manning Hospice Boutique hotel The New Beehive in Canford Cliffs has teamed up with the Starlight Stroll for Lewis-Manning Hospice which is back again for 2011. It’s now set to be bigger and better than ever involving the whole family – men, women and children so why not get a team together and join in the fun to bring light to the lives of those affected by cancer and other life limiting and life threatening illnesses. The multi-ability 5km Starlight Stroll takes place on Saturday 19 March co mm e ncing o n the stro ke o f midnight and will begin and end at the Sandbanks Beach Café with a pit stop at the newly refurbished ‘The New Beehive’ hotel – an impressive Victorian country house offering stunning views from the nearby cliff tops where walkers will be offered refreshments and light bites. Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager at the hospice said “last year over 200 ladies took part in the event raising over £20,000 for the care and comfort of our patients. This year we are aiming to register 500 participants to raise £50,000, which would cover a whole month’s running costs of the hospice” Director Chris H. of The New Beehive says “The Starlight Stroll is particularly poignant to our family as the Lewis

Manning Hospice cared for my mother in law during her last weeks and we cannot thank them enough for their care and support. I urge everyone to put on their walking shoes and show their support for this wonderful charity and of course pop into the New Beehive for refreshments along the way” For more information on the Starlight Stroll and how to sign up contact the fundraising team on 01202 701000, email events@lewis-manning.co.uk or log onto the website at: www.lewis-manning.co.uk/starlight-stroll

March’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs There is still time to plant trees and shrubs if the task has not been already completed. Making sure the holes are dug big enough and deep enough for the root ball, also taking in consideration to use a good tree and shrub compost. Climbers and Wall-Plants Species and cultivars of Clematis that flower Summer & Autumn on new shoots made in the current season will benefit from a hard prune now. Roses The main pruning of bush and standard Roses should be carried out between the middle of the month and late March. Borders and Beds During mild spells weeds will start to grow. Deal with them as soon as they appear as they will be easier to remove. Bulbs and Corms Dahlia tubers in store for the Winter should be inspected to make sure that they are healthy and plump. Any bad patches should be cut away with a clean and sharp knife and dipped in Sulphur. Rock Gardens and Pools All leaves should have been removed by now. Mild spells may bring weeds & slugs, remove weeds while small and treat the slug s with slug bait (with suit able containers sunken in the ground, beer is a good tip.) Lawns Prepare for the growing season by raking with good wire rake removing worm casts and rubbish from lawn. Cut lawn but not too short then weed feed and moss kill as early as one can depending on the weather.

Fruit There is still time for both planting and pruning but try to complete task before new growth starts. Vegetables Seed potatoes should be removed from their bags and set to sprout in trays or shallow boxes (shed or greenhouse). Greenhouse and Frame Greenhouse should have been sterilized. Carnations and Chrysanthemums can be propagated from cuttings 55-60f (13-15c). Give free ventilation except on cold nights. House Plants Plants at home, particularly flowering ones need lots of light and free ventilation not stuck between blinds or curtains kept out of drafts and be careful not to over water, just damp. Always check how your plant looks. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923
