Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer. Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins. Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK. A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition. Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image. “I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home. With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.” The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition
with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE 200 LIGHT BULBS? CASTLEPOINT INVESTS £15,000 TO SAVE CAR PARK LIGHTING ENERGY The lower floor of the car park at Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park will have new lighting installed over the next 3 months. Two maintenance engineers have started to replace the first 200 of the 1000 existing lights using energy saving strip lights that individually dim by 10% when no movement is detected. Peter Matthews, General Manager at Castlepoint, said that the new lighting is expected t o red u ce the en e rgy consumption by an estimated 90%, with an anticipated £30,000 reduction to the shopping park’s annual electricity bill of £140,000. “We have been very careful to choose lighting that can be described as brilliant, not only for its ability to illuminate the car park for safety and security reasons, but in the way it dims when no one needs the brighter setting,” said Peter Matthews. “The
lighting we replace will also be recycled by using them as spare parts. Over time we will replace all the fittings as and when they fail.” Energy saving lighting has already been installed in private areas such as evacuation routes, storage, recycling and maintenance facilities where sensors automatically switch on lighting when required. Dorset churches to connect again in 2011 Christian inter-church ministry Connect South Dorset will hold its second summer annual worship, teaching and ministry event at Holton Lee July 13–17 2011, with the theme 'Getting into Gear'. Connect 2011 aims to build on the foundations of its launch event in July 2 0 1 0 wh en a ro u n d 2 , 00 0 p e op l e attended, representing over 30 churches and fellowships. As at last year's event, musicians from local churches will lead worship in the main tent. Marquees will be larger this year to accommodate expected greater numbers of visitors. Rev Dr Russ Parker will lead a line-up of speakers and the full five-day programme will include Bible readings, keynote topics, semin ars, interest group s, activities, evening celebrations. BBC1’S Antiques Roadshow To V isit Lulworth Castle Lulworth Castle is delighted to announce that BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at Lulworth Castle, on Thursday, 2nd June, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, Priests Way An excellent 6 mile walk with great views. taking in the coast and pleasant downland walking around Worth Matravers. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. There is a small parking fee. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. Walk details: Turn right as you leave the car park, turn left around the base of the Square and Compass pub (100 metres) and proceed along the road for about ½ mile. On the right of the road, cross the stile with the finger post saying Priests Way. Cross the next two stiles within about 100 metres and proceed across the fields, across 2 further stiles until you reach a track Follow this track for about ¼ mile and you will see a stile to your right signposted Seacombe and the Eastington National Trust area. Go over the stile and follow the path down the valley to Seacombe (do not follow the left fork to Dancing Ledge after the second stile). The path to Winspit is about 100 metres back from the cliffs on the right. Go over the stile into the woods, up through the w oods and follow the coastal path to Winspit quarries (2/3 mile).
As you drop down into Winspit, the path is not, as it seems, directly across the track into the base of the quarries. You need to turn right up the track for about 70 metres, then left up around the top of the quarry and onto the St Aldhelms/St Albans Head Coastguard’s station (2/3 mile). At Winspit you can also proceed directly up the track to Worth if you wish (1 mile, about 3 miles in total). At the Coastguard station, turn right along the track to Worth Matravers and walk through the village to the car park (2 miles). Talking about wildlife with
Wild Woodland Flowers Many wild flowers are at the peak of their blossom in May, so it is the perfect time to take a walk in the woods and enjoy this colourful display. The much-loved bluebell is for many people the essence of spring. Bluebells form a dazzling purple-blue carpet across ancient woodland, their bell shaped flowers appearing from late April to June. Bluebells can be a dominant species, covering most of the woodland ground, and they also grow in meadows and hedgerows. Although common and widespread, they have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and competition with the nonnative Spanish Bluebell. Growing near or amongst the bluebells, ramsons, or wild garlic, provide a striking contrast with star-shaped white flowers and long green leaves. It is common across Britain, growing mainly in deciduous woodland, and you might detect its characteristically strong garlic scent before even seeing the flower itself. Ramsons bloom through May and June and, like the bluebell, can have rather an overwhelming presence. The lesser celandine flowers earlier than the bluebells and ramsons, but is still around in May with its cheerful, buttercup-yellow flowers. It is an important early source of nectar and pollen for bumblebees and can make a cheerful yellow carpet through a wood in April.
Together these and other woodland flowers such as the wood anemone, create a spectacular display for us to enjoy in the spring. Make sure not to miss it, as they mostly bloom for a short period only, before the tree canopies above fill in, blocking out the sunlight. Chine Barman Reveals Artistic Ta l e n t w i t h F i r s t S h o w Hans Heaton is a barman at the Chine Hotel in Boscombe, a gem of a hotel located in three acres of gardens with paths directly down to the beach. Recently his colleagues discovered that he is also fantastic artist, with many paintings to his name. He painted his first portrait in oil in 2008 and has been locally recognized by several professionals as a young man with a natural talent. Hans has his first exhibition on Friday May 20th at Slepe Farm Wareham so don’t miss the opportunity to see this talented artist Hans spent most of his youth in the countryside in Devon near Tavistock. At the
early age of seven Hans was already making small paintings for his friends. Whilst in Plymouth Hans met Robert Lenkiewicz who recognised his talent even and gave Hans hints and advice on composition, highlights and subject material. During his teenage years Hans had the opportunity to travel to the capital cities of Europe , to visit the art galleries and see the works of the Masters and has taken time to study history of art. He feels he was born to paint and was always interested in the great Italian and Dutch Masters. When he moved to Bournemouth in 2007 the first thing he did was to walk in the footsteps of J M W Turner. One of the first major paintings Hans created was of the Needles just as Turner had done many years before

Jill the Will is coming your way! To help change peoples perceptions about making a Will and promote their upcoming Make a Will Week, Lewis-Manning Hospice is introducing Jill the Will, a friendly life-sized character, to the people of East Dorset. During Make a Will Week, which takes place between 6-10 June, participating law firms are offering to write standard Wills free of charge on the basis that the client makes a donation to the hospice. The suggested donation amounts are £75 for a single Will and £110 for a joint Will. For more complicated Wills or those requiring specialist advice, a fee will be agreed in advance. Stephanie Thorne, Legacy Officer at LewisManning Hospice said: “We created the Jill the Will character to help redefine willmaking as a positive, responsible and, in many cases, an easy thing to do. “What people tend to overlook is that a Will is made by someone while they are living in order to ensure that their loved ones and/or the causes they believe in are provided for after they are gone. This is a positive and responsible thing to do and something that can really lift a weight off your shoulders. “By making a Will through the Make a Will Week campaign, not only will you get peace of mind knowing that your loved ones are taken care of but you will also help raise much needed funds for local people living with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. There is no obligation to leave a gift in your Will to the hospice but we are very grateful to those who remember us in that way.” Lewis-Manning Hospice provides free specialist palliative care to over 650 people each year. Lewis-Manning is greatly reliant upon the generosity of the communities it serves.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Waggy Tails Rescue now has an Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) which is a detached house at Canford Magna. If planning permission is granted we will build heated cabins for each dog, a vetinary clinic will be on site for the foster dogs as will 24 hour staff for their welfare. There is a field attached to the property where they can be exercised. Due to the isolation of the house there will be no dis r upti o n t o a ny o ne. T he p ri m a ry
purpose would be to take in emergency cases e.g. dogs who have outlived the 7 days in a pound & are about to be put to sleep or those who Social Services have asked Waggy Tails Rescue to help when their owner may have been taken ill or died leaving possibly a much loved pet in dreadful distress.
