Hello Poole! Wow, what fantastic weather we have had! I hope you had a chance to get out into the garden and catch up with those things that just don’t seem to get done… We had a great time going down to the beach, having a meal out as well as spending time in our own garden for a change. I can highly recommend Spice Of India who are on the front cover. The meal was delicious and the service fantastic. They do a free home delivery service too so do make the most of that! Please use the businesses inside the Directory wherever you can. All of the people are local and ready to help you. From gardens and kitchens to shutters and driving instructors. From computer services to photographers to fitted furniture and exhausts, we have just the people for the job! Please say you found them inside The Poole Directory. I love to hear that you and the advertisers are happy. If you wish to advertise please give me a call on 01202 894397. Our rates are excellent! If you have a local community group we can promote you for free. The lucky winner of the meal for two was the Reilly Family! Well done and we hope you have a great night out. Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer. Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins. Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK. A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition. Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image. “I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home. With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.” The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition

with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 5:00 pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park. For more information call 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk.

Battistinis California Dreamin’ Expo to host UK Round of the AMD World Championship The first Battistinis California Dreamin’ Expo will play host to the UK round of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building over the May Bank Holiday weekend (28 to 29 May 2011) at the Bournemouth International Centre. The overall winner, to be announced at the Show, will travel to America for the chance to compete in the 8th annual World Championship at the prestigious Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, South Dakota USA. As well as the World Championship custom bike entries on display at the Show, there will be a gallery of non-competing, totally unique, world class custom bikes available to buy from leading dealers. Renowned retailer Battistinis - who this year celebrates twenty-one years in the custom motorcycle industry supplying custom parts and motorcycles from around the globe - will showcase a collection of their finest custom choppers. The Hogfather will be bringing mad chopper, The Mad Hog (35 years and almost £60k in the making) for one lucky visitor to purchase. For the very first time at a UK Bike Show, visitors will be given an insight into the wild showbiz world of stuntbikes with True Evel, an exclusive exhibition of memorabilia from one of the greatest American icons of the 1970s, Evel Knievel. Ace Cafe London will be featuring a collection of vintage flat trackers at the Show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the seminal Steve McQueen film ‘On any Sunday’. There will be the opportunity to watch the experts in action; demonstrating airbrushing and pin-striping techniques at the BLD Airbrush Demo Theatre and a chance to get hands-on in the creative workshops. The organisers will be making the most of the custom bike show’s idyllic location by hosting a ‘run to the beach’ for fellow club members and transforming the Bournemouth Pier Approach into a massive parking lot for visitors’ bikes. With the top industry suppliers, live bands, bars and burlesque models rocking the latest in motorcycle accessories, it will be a California Dream come true for every custom bike enthusiast or holidaymaker.

Mark Battistini from Battistinis Custom Cycles stated, “2011 sees us proudly celebrate twentyone years in the custom industry and what a ride it has been! From the start our plan was pretty simple, ‘build cool bikes and ride them to even cooler places’. We achieved our goal and stand very proud of our heritage. Last year, we celebrated our twentieth anniversary by opening our state of the art Bournemouth based custom centre which creates a custom retail experience like no other. The reaction that the showroom has received has simply been overwhelming, making it only logical sense for us to launch the ‘Battistinis California Dreamin Expo’. All of our bikes are designed, developed and manufactured in Bournemouth, yet so many are exported upon completion, so it will be a fantastic opportunity to see our latest builds alongside some of our classics, all together in the one place. “Be it chops, bobbers, hot rods and everything else that the gear head in you screams out for, we will have it covered under our ‘California Dreamin’ roof. This expo really is a huge milestone for us and I really want to thank everyone who has supported us over the years to achieve this dream. The show will make its mark on the UK and world custom scene with one huge gasoline fuelled bang! The next chapter in our history may truly be the best one yet, so swing your leg over your steed and hit the Bournemouth bound road, see you on May 28 and 29.” For more information visit the website www.californiadreaminexpo.com where you can also save up to 25 percent buying your tickets online.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE 200 LIGHT BULBS? CASTLEPOINT INVESTS £15,000 TO SAVE CAR PARK LIGHTING ENERGY The lower floor of the car park at Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park will have new lighting installed over the next 3 months. Two maintenance engineers have started to replace the first 200 of the 1000 existing lights using energy saving strip lights that individually dim by 10% when no movement is detected. Peter Matthews, General Manager at Castlepoint, said that the new lighting is expected t o red u ce the en e rgy consumption by an estimated 90%, with an anticipated £30,000 reduction to the shopping park’s annual electricity bill of £140,000. “We have been very careful to choose lighting that can be described as brilliant, not only for its ability to illuminate the car park for safety and security reasons, but in the way it dims when no one needs the brighter setting,” said Peter Matthews. “The

lighting we replace will also be recycled by using them as spare parts. Over time we will replace all the fittings as and when they fail.” Energy saving lighting has already been installed in private areas such as evacuation routes, storage, recycling and maintenance facilities where sensors automatically switch on lighting when required. Maintenance operative Gareth Dix holds one of the 200 Eco lights to be installed

BBC1’S Antiques Roadshow To V isit Lulworth Castle Lulworth Castle is delighted to announce that BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at Lulworth Castle, on Thursday, 2nd June, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, “Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the 'what's it worth? moment. The AR isn't just about antiques - it's history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.' Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. James Weld, Lulworth Estate General Manager said “We are thrilled to welcome the much loved Antiques Roadshow to the beautiful setting of Lulworth Castle in Dorset, for one of this years venue selections. It is such a prestigious and hugely popular programme, which has been on our television screens for over 30 years, so it will be very interesting to see what the residents of Dorset will bring along! It will most certainly get everyone rummaging around for their hidden family treasures!” The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some great finds such as an Egyptian stone head dug up in a garden worth £10,000, a medieval ring found

on a farm and valued at £20,000 and a Meissen cup and saucer bought at a car boot sale for £2.50 which was worth £5,000. Among some of the stranger items brought along were uneaten pieces of Royal wedding cake and a life-sized stuffed lion once used in a TV series. People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol, BS8 2LR or e-mail them to: antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk. It may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. Series Editor Simon Shaw says: “The team are all looking forward to visiting Dorset. It’s always exciting to see what will come to light on the day. We regularly see between 1500 and 2000 visitors on the day. Despite the high turnout everyone will get to see an expert.” More information can be found at: www.bbc.co.uk/antiquesroadshow

May’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs All trees and shrubs can still be planted if in pots but make sure sat in a bucket of water until no bubbles. Remove faded flowers now. Climbers and Wall-Plants Not much hard pruning can be done now, because the warmth is likely to be making vigorous growth, just tidy up dead bits.

shoots, leaving only the strongest ones, mulch them. Spray tree and soft fruits before blossom. Vegetables Main crop potatoes must be planted now, early ones must be earthed up. Plant out sprouts, parsley and celery when hardened off, same with runner beans.

Roses The warmer days are likely to bring early attacks of aphids and also watch signs of black spot and mildew. Speak to a Nursery man on what to spray.

Greenhouse and Frame On sunny days greenhouse plants will need more air and water. Early in the month cucumbers, sweet corn and marrows may be sown for planting out next month.

Borders and Beds Weeds grow rapidly this time of year if not tackled soon can soon overwhelm the less cultivated plant. Still tackle weeds now, little and often is good.

House Plants Move plants from sunny window-sills just plenty of light, water well with a liquid feed at half the recommended strength about every two weeks.

Bulbs and Corms Remove faded flowers from all bulbs and if Summer bedding is going in lift all bulbs as soon as flowering is over.

Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, Priests Way An excellent 6 mile walk with great views. taking in the coast and pleasant downland walking around Worth Matravers. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. There is a small parking fee. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. Walk details: Turn right as you leave the car park, turn left around the base of the Square and Compass pub (100 metres) and proceed along the road for about ½ mile. On the right of the road, cross the stile with the finger post saying Priests Way. Cross the next two stiles within about 100 metres and proceed across the fields, across 2 further stiles until you reach a track Follow this track for about ¼ mile and you will see a stile to your right signposted Seacombe and the Eastington National Trust area. Go over the stile and follow the path down the valley to Seacombe (do not follow the left fork to Dancing Ledge after the second stile). The path to Winspit is about 100 metres back from the cliffs on the right. Go over the stile into the woods, up through the w oods and follow the coastal path to Winspit quarries (2/3 mile).

As you drop down into Winspit, the path is not, as it seems, directly across the track into the base of the quarries. You need to turn right up the track for about 70 metres, then left up around the top of the quarry and onto the St Aldhelms/St Albans Head Coastguard’s station (2/3 mile). At Winspit you can also proceed directly up the track to Worth if you wish (1 mile, about 3 miles in total). At the Coastguard station, turn right along the track to Worth Matravers and walk through the village to the car park (2 miles). Our next guided walk is Sunday 29 May – Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, 12:00 start. All information and future walk dates are online at www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478. Talking about wildlife with

Wild Woodland Flowers Many wild flowers are at the peak of their blossom in May, so it is the perfect time to take a walk in the woods and enjoy this colourful display. The much-loved bluebell is for many people the essence of spring. Bluebells form a dazzling purple-blue carpet across ancient woodland, their bell shaped flowers appearing from late April to June. Bluebells can be a dominant species, covering most of the woodland ground, and they also grow in meadows and hedgerows. Although common and widespread, they have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and competition with the nonnative Spanish Bluebell. Growing near or amongst the bluebells, ramsons, or wild garlic, provide a striking contrast with star-shaped white flowers and long green leaves. It is common across Britain, growing mainly in deciduous woodland, and you might detect its characteristically strong garlic scent before even seeing the flower itself. Ramsons bloom through May and June and, like the bluebell, can have rather an overwhelming presence. The lesser celandine flowers earlier than the bluebells and ramsons, but is still around in May with its cheerful, buttercup-yellow flowers. It is an important early source of nectar and pollen for bumblebees and can make a cheerful yellow carpet through a wood in April.

Together these and other woodland flowers such as the wood anemone, create a spectacular display for us to enjoy in the spring. Make sure not to miss it, as they mostly bloom for a short period only, before the tree canopies above fill in, blocking out the sunlight. Chine Barman Reveals Artistic Ta l e n t w i t h F i r s t S h o w Hans Heaton is a barman at the Chine Hotel in Boscombe, a gem of a hotel located in three acres of gardens with paths directly down to the beach. Recently his colleagues discovered that he is also fantastic artist, with many paintings to his name. He is so popular that he does not have any to show as th ey hav e all b een s old almos t immediately on completion which is quite an accolade! He painted his first portrait in oil in 2008 and has been locally recognized by several professionals as a young man with a natural talent. Hans has his first exhibition on Friday May 20th at Slepe Farm Wareham so don’t miss the opportunity to see this talented artist Hans spent most of his youth in the countryside in Devon near Tavistock. At the

early age of seven Hans was already making small paintings for his friends. Whilst in Plymouth Hans met Robert Lenkiewicz who recognised his talent even and gave Hans hints and advice on composition, highlights and subject material. During his teenage years Hans had the opportunity to travel to the capital cities of Europe , to visit the art galleries and see the works of the Masters and has taken time to study history of art. He feels he was born to paint and was always interested in the great Italian and Dutch Masters. When he moved to Bournemouth in 2007 the first thing he did was to walk in the footsteps of J M W Turner. One of the first major paintings Hans created was of the Needles just as Turner had done many years before

Jill the Will is coming your way! To help change peoples perceptions about making a Will and promote their upcoming Make a Will Week, Lewis-Manning Hospice is introducing Jill the Will, a friendly life-sized character, to the people of East Dorset. During Make a Will Week, which takes place between 6-10 June, participating law firms are offering to write standard Wills free of charge on the basis that the client makes a donation to the hospice. The suggested donation amounts are £75 for a single Will and £110 for a joint Will. For more complicated Wills or those requiring specialist advice, a fee will be agreed in advance. Stephanie Thorne, Legacy Officer at LewisManning Hospice said: “We created the Jill the Will character to help redefine willmaking as a positive, responsible and, in many cases, an easy thing to do. “What people tend to overlook is that a Will is made by someone while they are living in order to ensure that their loved ones and/or the causes they believe in are provided for after they are gone. This is a positive and responsible thing to do and something that can really lift a weight off your shoulders. “By making a Will through the Make a Will Week campaign, not only will you get peace of mind knowing that your loved ones are taken care of but you will also help raise much needed funds for local people living with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Waggy Tails Rescue now has an Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) which is a detached house at Canford Magna. If planning permission is granted we will build heated cabins for each dog, a vetinary clinic will be on site for the foster dogs as will 24 hour staff for their welfare. There is a field attached to the property where they can be exercised. Due to the isolation of the house there will be no dis r upti o n t o a ny o ne. T he p ri m a ry

All this takes money — donations can be s e n t t o : W a g g y T a i ls R es c u e, 6 9 Cobham Road, Ferndown Industrial Estate, Wimborne, BH21 7QE, marking the envelope ARC Appeal. We still desperately need home carers for the dogs if anyone can help please phone 01202 875000 — food & vet bills are paid for.
