Eco energybathroom changes we can make if we’re keen on making our daily preparation and preening routines that much more ecologically friendly.

Water Wastage Showers, toilets, baths and bathroom sinks are collectively responsible for more than twothirds of a household’s average water meaningusage,that any reduction we can make in water usage will have a hugely positive impact on the Thereenvironment.aresimple measures we can all take such as showering rather than bathing, and beyond that changing an old showerhead for a low-flow version with high pressure. Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill.

From taps to showerheads to the big one, build-up inside your boiler, banishing limescale means keeping your heating appliances and waterﬂow systems running as efﬁciently as possible.

1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of reﬁllable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for reﬁllable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too.

3. Letting life flourish While the bathroom perhaps isn’t the most obvious place to begin inviting in the flora and fauna of the outside world, the moisturehumidity, and flow of air actually makes it a great place for lowmaintenance plants such as ferns to Meanwhile,thrive.adding in airpurifying plants such as spider plants, peace lilies, aloe vera and snake plants will actively improve the purity of the air in your bathroom. A biproduct of this is a decrease in mould, meaning less need for harmful cleaning products and chemicals. 4. Limescale lag Limescale is something we commonly associate with poor performance in kettles and washing machines, and that’s correct. Yet, by extension, when our appliances require more energy, over a longer period, to perform the same function, both we and the environment are paying for the privilege.

Copyright © Mary Baldwin NOW and THEN Article and photo kindly supplied by Mary Baldwin Southend was the old name for the southern end of Hightown Road, which over the years has also been known by many different names: Lamb Lane after the inn on the corner of Christchurch Road, Clark’s Lane, after the family who lived in Southend House in the 18th century, Cemetery Road or Station Road. Up until the early 19th century the lane ﬁnished just past the very sharp corner shown on the right of the c1900 photograph. Since then the Highways authorities have considerably reduced this awkward angle but still today it remains quite a sharp bend.

The semi-detached houses on the left of the old photo, now 43, 45 and 47 Hightown Road, were built in Victorian times and known as Southend Grove. 19th century residents included the town missionary, a railway engine driver and a millwright. The old thatched cottage next to them was the home of farm labourer Alfred Plumley and his family. Sometime about 1930 this cottage was demolished and replaced by two detached houses, numbers 49/51 and 53, built by Barrow Brothers of the Quomp. A further detached house (51a) was added between them early in the 21st century. These are screened by bushes in the modern Bullphoto.Hall, now 57 Hightown Road in the centre of the picture, was described in the May and June 2022 issues of Roundabout Ringwood.

The 1809-1811 Enclosure Act for Ringwood included the establishment of an entirely new part of Hightown Road continuing on from this bend in a straight line up to Eastﬁeld Lane. (Since the creation of the Castleman Way roundabout in the 1990s this straight line has been broken).

The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I have to say I just love it. Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. 1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to Method produce a smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand. 3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside. On a lightly floured board, roll out the larger piece of pastry and use it to line the tart tin.
