Cllr. Phil North Leader of the Test Valley Borough Council

ColumnCouncillor’s

I completely understand the impact rising inflationary pressures and the significant increase in energy prices are having on hard-pressed residents. The recent statements by the Governor of the Bank of England and the Chief Executive of the energy regulator Ofgem offer a sobering analysis of worse to come this winter, primarily caused by Russia’s attempted invasion of Ukraine. And although it’s down to national government to offer more assistance to those that need it most, I’ve been concentrating on what we can do Thelocally.borough council already provides a broad range of support to individuals and families - including £815k to the Citizens Advice Bureau over the next three years to provide advice on benefits, debt reduction and other practical support; the work our housing service does to get people into accommodation and support them to stay there; paying out the £150 energy rebate payments; administering food vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund; providing council tax and housing benefit support; helping to develop the networks of local groups who often work with people most in need in communities; and internally, we have moved all of our lowestpaid workers onto a higher pay band. Although we don’t have infinite resources, there are ways we can do more. This is why I recently organised a special meeting of the Test Valley Partnership focused solely on the cost of living. In the spirit of crossparty working - and in recognition of the scale of the issue - I invited the Leader of the Opposition to help me host the session. The meeting provided a platform for partner organisations to discuss what we are all already doing, identify any gaps and determine what else we can do to assist. Whether that be signposting, other practical support or perhaps even some one-off targeted assistance to relevant Weorganisations.arecurrently working up an action plan to help people further but one of the first things we have done is create a page on Test Valley Borough Council’s website where we have brought together in one location all the help that is currently available. Whether that be advice on benefits, making sure people who are eligible are claiming everything they are entitled to, links to local help and advice on conversations to have with your energy company. If you don’t follow me already, please check out my Facebook page - www.fb.com/ cllrphilnorth – where I will post more regular updates on the help and support we’re providing.

Come and join us - Your local theatre needs you! Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS) has been entertaining the people of Romsey and beyond since it was founded back in 1934 moving to its present home the Plaza Theatre in 1984. The Plaza’s iconic Art Deco building, built in 1931 as a cinema, was saved from demolition after RAODS members raised funds to buy the Plaza for the society in 1982, converting it to the 232seat theatre you see now. Over the years RAODS has expanded the number of its own productions to one each month covering a wide variety of genres including comedy, drama, musicals and of course our regular annual pantomime in January. In addition, we present an extensive programme of externally produced shows such as tribute acts, comedy nights and much more. RAODS also has a very active youth group which meets each week participating in shows with adult members as well as on their own. All the roles involved in putting on these shows are voluntary, and this is where we need you! While acting and singing on stage may seem the obvious roles there are many more behind the scenes and front of house. So whatever skills you have there will be something for you at the Plaza, whether set building and design; lighting and sound; stage management; helping source props and costumes for shows; working front of house as an usher, in the kiosk or even behind the bar. Whatever it is you will always get a warm welcome from existing members. All contact details for joining are on our website. “I have found it really interesting to see my perspective and my perception change, and I love Williams, that.” a two-time Olympic gold medallist, admits that the dichotomy between her professional and her personal life is one that is hard for some to fathom, but then again, isn’t it always tricky to define living icons. “Whatever I believe in I fight for, and I will do it again and again until it’s right. My daughter brought out a new form of expression in me, and that was really important. It was a really humble experience; but also one that made me want to reach out and express this new me.

While the subject of retirement for Serena Williams is always one on the lips of interviewers, it is to the 40-year-old’s unending credit that she perseveres on in a sport that has given her so much, all of which she has paid back many times over. From recurrent injuries, mental health worries, the exhaustion of over two decades on the circuit, the distractions of media work, and the small matter of a young child waiting for her at home, no-one would begrudge the Florida-born star – the greatest female tennis player to have ever lived – the decision to start a new career.

“I just always come back to that phrase, ‘you are a long time retired’, and that really speaks volumes for who I am and the love I have for this sport,” she begins. “Of course, on occasions I have grown tired of it, and certainly I value my downtime away from the court more than ever before; but if the idea of taking my racket out there, of competing, of giving it my all, still excites me, then why would I possibly want to do anything else?” Indeed, Williams’ ambitions on the court have evolved almost as much as the athlete herself. ROMSEY L VESBy Alex Baxter bs! ubs!Art To the untrained eye, one may not assume Romsey to be an artsy place. During any other period in the year you’d be right. But in July and August the borough became a whole other canvas, with creative talent on open display, colourful festivals, and a palette of opportunities that encouraged people to explore their artistic proclivities. When it comes to marking your town as a beacon of creativity, first impressions count, and nothing is more eye-catching than transforming the mundane into art. Here I’m talking about the return of ‘Yarn Bombing’: a worldwide movement that sees outdoor features such as pillarboxes

and statues get covered by knitted cozys. Suffice to say, the novel concept has taken Romsey by storm ever since it became a community project in 2017. These quirky designed cozys, which range from intricate patterns to little characters, can be easily spotted across the town (in front of the TVBC offices, the marketplace etc) - reinvigorating its appearance with a little fun and levity. It really has become something of an annual sightseeing (headline making) event. A collaborative effort that never fails to be the talk of the town and bring people Indeed, together.Romsey has proven time and again how it lends itself to all occasions, and what more perfect venue can there be than one that can be art and host art! Besides attracting attention to the neighbouring independent crafts businesses, South Central Makers market also puts a spotlight on the artisans that live amongst us by providing them a public space to sell their work. Furthermore, as festival season grips the summer, so does the abundance of performative talent. There is no bigger celebration than Beggars Fair, which sees local musicians and choirs perform to scores of audiences. No other event will have you experience the town quite as whipped up into a gusto (I write this the day after said event should you know).

Speaking of big, August is notably the month of Hampshire Open Studios (20th-29th). Started in 2015 and funded by Test Valley Arts Foundation, this far-reaching event sees 280 venues within a 25 mile To advertise in this call 01264

Sidenote: TVAF are also a sponsor of Romsey Festival, the borough wide celebration of the arts that is held every three years - the previous being July 2021. They also help promote theatre and storytelling events, perfectly complimenting the Romsey Community Cinema and Plaza. HOS shows that art is all around us, and this coincides nicely with the recent installations around the Abbotswood Art Trail (“The Newt Route”). Bronze Waymarkers will direct you to galvanised sculptures of different animals and insects that reflect the surrounding ecology. In fact Romsey has a specialty with outdoor art, especially when you consider Hilliers Art in the Gardens - making art accessible and interesting by placing pieces within the gardens. But suppose one month of art isn’t enough? There are a number of groups you may want to consider that cater to all arts and specialties. Viewfinders of Romsey Viewfinders of Romsey Camera Club are the perfect group for photography enthusiasts of all abilities. They feature prominently in local media because of their themed competitions and social outreach. Romsey Art Group Painters, potters, sculptors, wood carvers. Artists of all forms, professional and amateur, make up the 300 members of this group, which are based at the Mountbatten Gallery in Lee. Founded in 1963, the group has connections to royalty with Lord Mountbatten. The Countess Mountbatten is its current president. They are renowned as a friendly space for people to showcase their artwork and hone their skills. They also run seasonal exhibitions and workshops. The Arts Society Romsey Another respective group with a strong membership base. They run a diverse programme of trips to galleries and museums and hold lectures and study days at Crosfield Hall. Plus they invest in initiatives to get young people involved in the arts. So dear readers, you can see how Romsey is a supporter of the arts in all the big and small ways possible, making it feel like one big vibrant house full of culture. From festivals and exhibitions to workshops and clubs. It is important that a community keep in touch with its cultural scene in order to stand out and make its presence known nationally. Provoked by the conflict in Ukraine, price variances at the pumps have become a sick joke; yet perhaps the one constant we’ve come to accept is that while we seem trapped in a lack of choice, there is still one we make at the pumps – it usually falls under the guise of ‘Super,’ ‘V-Power,’ ‘Nitro+,’ or ‘Ultimate’. Whatever the buzzword, the premise is to lure you into an upgraded fuel Foroption.many of us, whether petrol or diesel, filling up is enough of a financial chore, without voluntarily spending more on jazzed up fuel. For others, even in this climate, premium denotes performance and longevity; but does the added investment pay back? Premium vehicle? Premium fuel The truth is, if you own a highspec vehicle then filling up from the premium pump could be a sound move. The reason for this is that premium fuel’s higher-octane rating means it works better with engines of a higher compression. BENEFITS OF TURMERIC Eases aches and pains A powerful anti-inflammatory, there is evidence to suggest a daily dose of turmeric can greatly benefit those suffering from joint problems and Thatarthritis.said, turmeric is not listed as an arthritis treatment by the NHS, and therefore is unlikely to be prescribed by your GP. Boosts moods By reducing inflammation in the brain, the curcumin element enhances the flow of neurotransmitters. Rids you of free radicals Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects and fights those nasty cell-damaging atoms. Found in everything from fried food to air pollution, free radicals have been linked to both ageing and cancer and the fewer of them in our bodies, the better. Prevents heart disease

It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid

While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread. While many of these studies are in their early stages, one thing is for sure: you no longer need to feel guilty about your weekly Indian takeaway.

From helping fight inflammation to preventing heart disease and cancer, turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

I’mhave.really looking forward to a new wave of sustainability that goes right from the root, because as much as how we behave as people a ects the environment, the way our homes are built in the first place determines so many of our actions, and the extent we need to go to in order to a ect the same change.

In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as Ofimportant.course,

next generation of homebuilders, and in that I’m talking about things like high-performing concretes, and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash. It’s also about building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.

When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are e ectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the a able architectural business owner talks sustainability.about Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-o between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the Whatequation.that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits.

Benefits of losing weight together... we know what to do, why can’t we seem to be able to do it?” A question I’m always asked! Throughout career the same question popped up time and time again. But knowing and doing can be worlds apart, we are complex human beings. Those thoughts and feelings that stop us doing what we know we need to do are very often buried deep inside and often out of our own awareness too. During many years as an experienced nurse, I used the techniques I was trained in, to help others overcome those psychological barriers that stop us doing what we need to do to be how we want to be, to improve health and wellbeing. Apart from making us feel better about ourselves, and improved mental health, losing weight can help us physically too. study published in Rheumatism with knee osteoarthritis that losing 1lb of weight resulted in 4lbs of pressure being removed from the knees, not to mention the pressure from the hips! that’s only the beginning! The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! Smiles all round... Nothe Fort from the water To advertise in this magazine, call 01264 31649928

have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Have a great month of September. By Debbie Corney Dolphins in Portland harbour the seal?

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation! He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

Test Valley Borough Council is proud to announce yet another year of Green Flag awards for War Memorial Park, Rooksbury Mill Local Nature Reserve and Valley Park Woodlands. This coveted award has now been consistently presented to all three parks for more than a decade, recognising the quality and value that these well-managed spaces bring to the community.

The council thoroughly plans green space management to enable sustainable, long-term investment to maximise the way spaces are used and enjoyed. If the will have has not been properly signed and witnessed it is invalid. If it is invalid you have no will and the law will dictate what happens to your estate. This may not result in what you wanted to happen to your assets and could lease to people getting a lot more or less than you wanted.

The effects of a poorly drafted will can last many years as family disagreements can ensue with potentially no reconciliation. It is very important if you make a will that is drafted properly and that you have taken advice from a solicitor, in addition your solicitor can also advise you at the time about Inheritance tax planning, power of attorney and planning for tomorrow. It may be that it was drafted in such a way that there are people that you did not intend to benefit who can make a claim against your estate. This could lead to expensive legal arguments involving lots of different people who have an interest. You can use your will to minimise the impact on your estate of inheritance tax. Type 1 diabetes, meanwhile, which is generally considered more dangerous, can develop at any age, and is most prevalent in children and adolescents. In both cases, the use of oral drugs is recommended in order to keep blood sugar levels under control, yet ground-breaking technological developments look set to make our detection and management that much better.

1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of refillable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for refillable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too.

Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill.

The ISS can be spotted early in the morning until the 11th; it then moves to our evening skies from the 15th until month end. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Welcome to the September Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the return of the gas giants to our evening skies, and a rare opportunity to see the planet Uranus disappear briefly behind the Moon.

Events

Both gas giants are visible from 9pm in our south-eastern skies as the Sun sets, with dazzling Jupiter lower to the east (left) of less-bright Saturn. An almost-full moon appears between them on the 9th. Moon September’s full moon occurs on the 10th. It is close to Saturn on the 8th, Jupiter on the 10th, and Mars on the 16th.

The Autumn Equinox on 23rd September marks when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which nights start to become longer than days.

Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).

Did you know...? A very rare event occurs in the UK for the first time since 1953 this month, when the Moon moves in front of (occults) the planet Uranus. Although not a naked-eye planet, Uranus can easily be spotted in binoculars, and you can use these to watch as it disappears behind the lit side of the Moon on the 14th around 10.15pm depending on your location. It will then reappear out from behind the dark limb of the Moon around an hour or so later. If the evening is cloudy then there is a second chance to see the same thing happen on the 5th December late in the afternoon! 11.30pm from the 20th SeptemberNE E Capella Pleiades star AldebaranredclusterHyadesclusterstarandgiantMars Occultation of Uranus by the Moon: September 14th ~10.15pm - 11.30pm Please mention Modern Magazines when contacting advertisers41

Nigel MarmaladeSlater’sTart the dough well into the corners and trim the edges. Scatter the ground almonds over the base of the tart, then spoon in the marmalade and gently smooth the surface. 4. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing. Top Tip Leave the tart to cool and the filling to fully set before attempting to cut into slices.

Introduction

1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to Method produce a smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand. 3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside. On a lightly floured board, roll out the larger piece of pastry and use it to line the tart tin. Push Ingredients (serves 4) For the pastry • 250g plain flour 125g butter 100g caster sugar • 2 egg yolks • 1-2 tbsp water 1 egg, beaten for the glaze For the filling 4 tbsp ground almonds 500g orange marmalade You will also need a 20cm tart tin with a removable base. I think the beauty of a fruit tart is that it combines different textures and sensations with whatever you want to serve it with.
