Students across Poole Bournemouth & Christchurch awarded grades on National Results Day

A-Level, BTec and Level 3 Apprenticeship students who have attended schools and colleges in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will receive their results today. This year group have faced a challenging journey from 2020 when their GCSE exams were cancelled. They began their post 16 studies under the shadow of lockdowns and negotiated year 12 and year 13 with many students repeatedly having to self-isolate and learn from home. First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

Seeing the first kit is an incredibly exciting moment for the project and breeding is a clear indication of normal behaviour and that the adult pair are healthy and happily settled in their Dorset surroundings. This local project is an enormous step forward on the journey to restore beavers to Dorset, helping us to raise awareness and understanding of what it means to have these influential mammals back in our county. Beavers have the potential to make a huge difference to our natural environment and can assist nature’s recovery as well as providing other benefits for humans.”

Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Beavers even have the potential to reduce flooding by slowing the rate of water during extreme rainfall events. Once common in the UK, the 16th century saw Eurasian beavers hunted to extinction for their meat, fur, and castoreum, a secretion from their castor glands.

CRUMBS, a charity that provides training in hospitality and catering, housekeeping, and administration for adults with a range of disabilities, is set to launch a digital skills training programme this October following on from the introduction of a state-of-theart IT suite two months ago. Up to 10 people to date have completed training sessions via the IT suite to help them gain pre-employment skills and build confidence with independent learning. Funding towards the IT suite was donated by one of Dorset’s largest grant-giving charities, the Talbot Village Trust, and Jake Perkin is one individual who has benefitted through using the CRUMBS IT suite. Three years ago, Jake was living in a homeless hostel for people with drug and alcohol abuse issues. After joining the Shared Lives home and care scheme in 2019 via BCP Council, Jake’s carer recognised the need to give him a meaningful occupation and referred him to ThanksCRUMBS.tothe enhanced IT facilities and training sessions offered at CRUMBS, Jake has not only achieved an industry endorsed award in administration and IT skills but has now become an integral part of the CRUMBS volunteer team. As a volunteer, Jake is using his skills gained to assist with office administration and customer service duties, as well as supporting other individuals to complete training programmes. In addition to upskilling, Jake wanted to learn how to develop relationships in a working environment as well as make new friends. He was mentored through his training programme by a member of the CRUMBS’ team who supported him to learn administrative tasks and responsibilities while completing his training units.

Jake commented: “The programme at CRUMBS has really helped me to turn my life around. Not only have I been able to gain a qualification, but I’ve made some great friends along the way. Developing key skills at CRUMBS in the IT suite has led to me becoming a volunteer at the charity and I’m pleased to be able to put my new skills into practice. I can’t thank everyone enough who supported me to develop new skills that have really benefitted me Carolinepersonally.”Cooban, Head of Philanthropy at Talbot Village Trust, said: “Hearing Jake’s story is truly heart-warming. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you ﬁnd the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. Introduction and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add golden-browna colour to the cooked chicken and help to thicken the sauce. 2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until goldenbrown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Now finely chop the shallot and add to the frying pan, placing the shallot under the chicken so that the shallot cooks.

Three community meals hosted to date at new Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space Talbot Village Trust, a local grant giving charity that supports worthy causes across south east Dorset, has donated £14,400 to Bournemouth charity Grounded Community to help continue its work supporting and educating local people in food-growing.

“We spacemealsthreealreadyhavehostedcommunityinthenewandplanto hold more monthly events throughout the year. At one of these events alone, we had 75 people and cooked 49 pizzas in our new pizza oven.”

Granted charity status in 2020, Grounded Community currently has around 140 volunteers and nine part-time staff members to run foodgrowing workshops, set people up in their homes and train volunteers. In addition, Grounded Community runs a surplus food box scheme to aid lowincome households with supermarket surplus and garden produce. The educational charity has used the grant to create an Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space at The Secret Garden in the grounds of St Clements Church in Boscombe. The match funded donation was put towards purchasing materials for the timber-framed structure with skylight roof panels, kitchen units, a hob, pizza oven and a barbecue, with the remainder invested in garden maintenance and water irrigation.

Michael French, Projects Coordinator at Grounded Community, said: “We are very grateful to the Trust for investing in our community and supporting our work. Grants like the one provided by the Talbot Village Trust enable us to focus on our spaces and make them more user-friendly and accommodating.

The Outdoor Kitchen Learning Space provides shelter from the rain for the volunteers, local women’s group Safe and Sound and nature play parents, while also giving them a space to make and enjoy refreshments. The students from neighbouring schools will also be making use of the charity’s new educational garden resource.

The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. The Co-op Local Community Fund has raised a £1,200 for Diverse Abilities’ STARs service, with two months of fundraising remaining.

Co-op members raise £1,200 for the siblings!

STARs is the charity’s support and advice service for siblings of children with special education needs. It’s a 12-week programme for children aged eight to 16, meeting on Thursday evenings between 4.30pm and The6.30pm.charity aims to reduce pressure the siblings are under by providing an environment where they can access support and advice, but also take part in fun activities, make friends, and be themselves. Clare Rochford, manager of STARs, commented: “It’s tough being an SEN sibling, as well as the usual challenges of growing up, they also often receive less attention from parents and have more worries and responsibilities than their peers. “It’s important to provide an opportunity that enables young people to realise they are not alone, hopefully giving them a support network which will last far longer than the time they attend our sessions, as being a sibling never ends.”

STARs continues to be one of the Co-op Local Community Fund charities until Saturday, October 22, 2022, where 2p in every £1 spent by Co-op members is deposited into an account that is split equally between the Local Community Fund and the Community Partnerships Fund. More than £84million has been raised for over 25,000 causes since 2016. The charity aims to reach its target of £2,500 by the end of the campaign, and urges supporters to select STARs as their chosen charity when they shop at the Co-op.’ Emma Bovey, fundraising officer at Diverse Abilities, added: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone across all the Co-op teams for their support of our STARs sibling service so far. Between September 2021 and March 2022 alone, 13 local schools – including Bournemouth School for Girls and The Bishop of Winchester Academy – collectively raised £56,000 through multiple events.

Last year, YMCA Bournemouth housed and supported more than 170 individuals and provided more than 53,000 meals for vulnerable adults. Mercury The innermost planet cannot be seen this month. Venus Venus is visible just before sunrise in the east, but is lost in the Sun’s glare towards the end of the month. It will reappear in our evening skies in December. Mars Mars can be seen late in the evening, rising around 10pm. It is currently located in the constellation of Taurus the Bull, and is close to the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters (see figure).

Did you know...? A very rare event occurs in the UK for the first time since 1953 this month, when the Moon moves in front of (occults) the planet Uranus. Although not a naked-eye planet, Uranus can easily be spotted in binoculars, and you can use these to watch as it disappears behind the lit side of the Moon on the 14th around 10.15pm depending on your location. It will then reappear out from behind the dark limb of the Moon around an hour or so later. Method

Ingredients (serves 4) For the pastry • 250g plain flour • 125g butter • 100g caster sugar • 2 egg yolks • 1-2 tbsp water • 1 egg, beaten for the glaze For the filling • 4 tbsp ground almonds • 500g orange marmalade You will also need a 20cm tart tin with a removable base. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand.

4. Roll out the reserved pastry into a disc roughly the size of the tart, then cut into 2cm wide strips. Brush lightly with a little beaten egg, then place the strips one at a time on to the surface of the tart in a lattice pattern. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until the pastry is pale biscuit-coloured and the marmalade is bubbling. Let the tart cool before easing from the tin and slicing.

3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside. On a lightly ﬂoured board, roll out the larger piece of pastry and use it to line the tart tin. Push the dough well into the corners and trim the edges. Scatter the ground almonds over the base of the tart, then spoon in the marmalade and gently smooth the surface.

I think the beauty of a fruit tart is that it combines different textures and sensations with whatever you want to serve it with. Cream, ice cream, custard or even left by itself and washed down with a cup of strong tea, a tart is often as much about what accompanies it… although this one is particularly delicious. I’ve used marmalade for that extra spice, and because the pastry is deliberately sweetened to balance the citrus bitterness of the marmalade.

1. Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to produce a smooth, firm dough.
