Dear Southbourne, We have a full glossy magazine for you this month with lots of good local data. The Boscombe & Southbourne Probus Club will be having a talk on the RNLI in July. Contact the Elderly are looking for drivers to help one Sunday a month. Dorset Wildlife Trust tells us all about meadows. It’s time for Dad’s to play in “Childs Play: Father’s Day”. Karen Pitt is having a Music & Firework Festival in celebration of surviving cancer. There is family fun at the Pavilion Dance, St. Katharine’s with St Nicholas are having a Summer Festival. The Christchurch U3A Vintage Brass was a great success and Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan, took us to The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! What fun we had and what great photos Stephen took. If you have any local news, then we can help you shout about it. We also like to shout about our loyal, local advertisers. If you have a testimonial about one or two of them, then please do send it to us. We will publish it to let everyone know what a great job they did. The lucky winner of the Cliff House Hotel Birthday Party was Mrs Jane Easterbrook. Well done to you! This month you could win an Eco-Friendly Box from www.greenisbest.world. Best of luck with that one! Wishing you a wonderful month of June,

Here For You

when it matters most Getting Married

Care Fee Protection When an individual requires long term care, their home and savings may be used to fund it. We can help you understand this complex area and provide advice on what steps can be taken now to protect your hard earned wealth.

You’ll need to put plans in place to ensure your spouse is looked after should the worst happen. Any existing Last Will and Testament is probably invalidated by your marriage, so prompt action is recommended.

The Birth of a Child There’s plenty to think about when you become a parent, but high on the agenda should be reviewing your Will to include your child as a EHQH¾FLDU\ DQG appoint a guardian to look after your child if anything happens to you.

Losing a Parent

Getting Divorced

Along with all the personal issues a bereavement can bring, there are also a number of legal issues that need attention (Probate). The affairs of your parent will need to be attended to and we are here to guide you.

A divorce can be a life-changing event that requires your estate planning to be reviewed. It’s important to make provision for those you need to care for in the event of your death. Your Will isn’t automatically invalidated by your divorce.

Becoming a Grandparent

A Second Marriage

As a grandparent you get to enjoy all the good bits of parenting, but can hand the little bundle of joy back at the end of the day. It’s time to reconsider your planning to cater for the new family structure.

It’s vital you review your planning and make your wishes clear – you might want to plan using a trust to provide for your new spouse, whilst still ring-fencing the inheritance of your child from a previous marriage.

Planning for Mental Incapacity If you lose capacity because of accident or illness, solely AND jointly held accounts could be frozen. Without Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, your loved ones face a long, complex, expensive and intrusive court process to gain control of your affairs.

Music and fireworks festival to celebrate surviving cancer A breast cancer survivor is organising a music and fireworks event to raise money for three causes including Bournemouth Hospital Charity. Karen Pitt, who is a member of Swing Unlimited Big Band, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2013. After two operations and a course of chemotherapy, she was given the all clear in May 2014, and says it was her friends and family that got her through. Karen said: “I found a lump before I was due on stage so I had to keep it to myself until after the gig. I was already booked to see my doctor for something else the next day so everything happened fairly swiftly for me.

evening’s entertainment. A hog roast and bar will also be open during the evening. Music will feature songs from Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and some of Swing Unlimited Big Band’s favourite and more unusual numbers. The evening will finish with a spectacular firework display while the band continues to play. Money raised from the event will be split between Bournemouth Hospital Charity - for the Jigsaw Building and medical equipment - Poole Hospital Radiotherapy and The Poole and District Children’s Cancer Fund

“My Swing Unlimited Big Band friends were amazing. They sent me flowers, texts and emails to cheer me up and this really helped me stay positive. I went to as many band practices as I could when I felt well enough and they always made me laugh. “The treatment I received was fantastic – it’s the reason I’m here today. I wanted to give something back and help others and that’s why I’m organising the Swing Unlimited Big Band Fireworks Spectacular. ” The event will take place at 7pm on 25 July at St Peter’s School in Southbourne. Tickets are available on the gate for £5 (under 10’s are free) and access to the field is from Broadway, Southbourne BH6 4EE and not via the school. Guests are invited to bring a picnic, blanket and fold up chairs to enjoy the

Wildlife News

Talking about Wildlife...

Marvellous Meadows Rolling meadows with their rainbow colours and sounds of wildlife bring out the romantics and poets in many of us. Few relaxation techniques can compete with a stroll along a meadow, in a light summer breeze, with the sounds of insects humming, birds singing and small mammals scampering away. Meadows are quintessentially British, and an essential part of our landscape, but sadly their numbers have been reduced greatly in the last half century. Meadows may look wild, but in fact these open areas of grassland are man-made havens for wildlife. Over hundreds of years meadows have been carefully managed with traditional means of alternating cattle grazing in the winter with hay cutting in the summer, when meadows are closed for cattle. They support a complex and intricate ecosystem with hundreds of species of flora and fauna, and are of great ecological importance. One of the most important functions of todays’ meadows is supporting pollinators; bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies. Common pollinator species inhabiting and buzzing around meadows are orange-tip, common blue and skipper butterflies, and bumble bees. A great part of the ecosystem depends on pollinators, and many plants and crops rely on them for their reproduction. Following the intensification of farming and development that took place after the war, pollinators have also decreased in numbers due to increasing popularity of pesticides and loss of many natural habitats. Meadows typically support dozens of species of various grasses and flowers, and the flora vary according to local climate and soil conditions. The varieties of grasses include quaking, sweet vernal-grass and crested dog’s-tail, and the species of flowers vary from snake’shead fritillary, devil’s-bit scabious and pepper saxifrage to various orchids, and many more.

In damp meadows, cuckooflower, ragged-robin and yellow iris can also be found. The multitude of grasses and flowers provide the pollinators with the vital nectar and pollen, and the insects in turn end up on the menu for birds, frogs and bats. Badgers, hares and rare farmland birds such as skylark all inhabit meadows, making them one of the most fascinating landscapes we have. Whilst meadows have been reduced drastically, there is good news as well; some have been protected as nature reserves, and meadow creation schemes such as ‘Coronation Meadows’ are creating new, “unimproved” meadows without the use of fertilisers. You can help us keep the magic of British of meadows intact for future generations and in ensuring that pollinators continue to thrive in this invaluable environment. Volunteering with your local Wildlife Trust and buying produce from local, traditionally managed farms are steps that take us closer to ensuring the future of our meadows. Dorset Wildlife Trust supports meadows preservation and will run the Kingcombe Meadows Reserve Wildflower Week Event on Wednesday 27 May 2015 10:30. This includes a walk through the reserve, looking at the flowers, folklore & history. Donation £2 to Dorset Flora Group welcome. By Niina Silvennoinen

IT’S ALL CHILDS PLAY

Putting the fun into Father’s Day By Sue Gascoyne

With Father’s Day just around the corner, children in nurseries and schools around the globe will be lovingly making cards and gifts to let their dad’s know just how special they are. Wonderful as these glued and crafted creations are, as adults we all know that you can’t beat the warm glow that you get from spending quality family time together. This got me thinking about Father’s Day a few years ago when my husband, two children and I took a trip to the beach. “It’s like being a child again” said a granddad to me. Three generations of a family (women and all) had gathered by an inland boating lake, with their model boats proudly lined up in a row. The men cradled, cleaned and caressed their boats, an ocean liner, tug boat, yacht and speedboat, before lining them up, side by side on the verdant grass, waiting for their turn on the water. The women had come prepared with chairs, flasks, sandwiches and lots of patience and good humour. Although they feigned boredom they were clearly almost as hooked as the men, enjoying the playful camaraderie of the occasion. It being nearly lunchtime, my children sat on a grassy bank, sandwich in hand, captivated as they watched the spectacle unfolded. As each vessel was carefully lifted onto the lapping water the suspense (of whether it would sink) was palpable as each child (and adult) perhaps imagined himself the captain of a ship, travelling to some distant shore. With concentration interspersed with laughter and frivolity, the men proceeded to take it in turns ‘sailing’ their boats. It was in one such bout of laughter, creased over like a child with the ’full-bodied’ experience, that

the granddad of the family explained to me how playing with toys made him feel. You could see it in his wide grin and eyes glinting with playfulness. The huge flashy speedboat (one of his son’s) had just had to be rescued by a tug (another son’s) in a dramatic manoeuvre, which clearly had tickled the father as well as the heckling women onlookers. Meanwhile my then five and eight year old (not to mention their Dad) sat watching mesmerised, drifting in distant shores judging by their glazed expressions. From doodling to sailing grown-up toy boats, even adults enjoy playing. Sat watching the adults and my children that day, it was difficult to tell the children and adults’ responses apart. It could so easily have been a game of conkers in the playground, the children carefully lining up their proud finds before making a selection and preparing for the ‘battle’. Play is all about the process and on that sunny day by the sea the process of play was apparent, as was the satisfaction, excitement and allure of distant shores. Whatever your plans this Father’s Day, make sure you make time for Dad’s to play. Sue is a published author, trainer, educational consultant and therapeutic play practitioner. Hi, I’m going to use this middle page of The Soutbourne Link to give advice, updates and hints & tips on everything and anything property related. My aim is for you to find it interesting and useful. I’ve ensured Mr Green has a very advice based approach.

Simon Ward - Owner, Mr Green Estate Agents

Southbourne Property Price Update So, it feels very difficult for buyers right now in BH6. Prices have shot up massively in the last year to 18 months. But what is the reality? Here are the stats. Supply has dropped off slightly in 4-bed and significantly in 1 and 2-bed properties. Overall house supply is down 16% from the same time last year, which is rather a lot, but it’s actually up 4% for 3-bed houses and up 7% in 5-beds.

So the big question is that if supply has only dropped off by 16% (and a large proportion of that is in 1-bed properties) why is it that prices have shot up so much? The simple reality is that demand has gone through the roof. Southbourne (and this has now filtered massively in to the surrouding areas) is incredibly popular. Who wouldn’t wish to live by a superb beach with a superb highstreet with easy access to good towns and only two hours (ish) from London?

If you look specifically at detached houses, we’re talking a 28% increase. According to the graph below, prices went up 31% in 2014! Yowzers.

It’s certainly been a fairly crazy period in relation to prices and at present it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

Adventures of Nellie

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie loves this time of year…the time of Shows! We have so many different types of exhibitions, festivals and fairs that we really are very spoiled. From the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset Show in September, the Bournemouth Air Festival in August and the wonderful New Forest Show in July, to name but a few. Well this one was totally up Nellie’s street… The Wheels Festival in Bournemouth! Nellie was rather excited to be going out. She had had ‘bronchitis’ and had been suffering for weeks, making a rather loud growling sound as she spluttered along. We were waiting for her new part to arrive all the way from Japan, so if anyone heard her, and to be honest she would have given the Formula One Racers a run for their money with all the noise she was making… we do apologise! So now with a new tube and a revived Nellie, off we went to the Wheels Festival. It was “Mayhem” in Zone 3! What a truck that was. This was a chance to have a ride on a huge truck, be thrown around and bounce up and down on the sand at speed. What fun.

Moving along to zone 2 there were Monster Trucks. OMG as the youngsters would say. Big Pete is massive. Nellie looks decidedly slim, yes slim, next to this beast of a machine. In fact Big Pete Ltd is the UK’s No1 most successful Monster Truck Team and has the ONLY female monster truck driver in Europe! Nellie was very impressed with her. You can check out their website at www.bigpete.org. Big Pete and Grim Reaper pulled a car apart in a tug of war, as if it was made of paper! They also climbed over a hill of sand, with two very squashed cars on top, as if kicking a plastic bottle out of the way. Easy. We also learned that ONE

25 25 new tyre costs £3000 and an extra £750 for the wheel, so we are rather pleased that Nellie doesn’t need shoes quite so big or expensive! Then, further along the populated promenade, well… oh… was Nellie’s dream. A red Lotus Esprit. Oh how she would love to look like a red Lotus Esprit. I am sure when she looks in the mirror, instead of seeing huge thighs and a big grin, she sees sleek, smooth, elegant lines. Probable much like I see Claudia Schiffer in the early 1990’s! Or is that Steve? Anyway… gorgeous, glistening and glamorous cars lined the street looking into the sunshine. Mmmmm…

Nellie dreams in the mirror...

Walking back up to the top, to the Overcliff were the famous Formula One Racers. Now if Nellie raced along at that speed (if only she could…) I am sure she would have been severely reprimanded - if they could have caught her of course! Today was a special day and the Overcliff had become an exhilarating race track. I do hope there

was noone staying in one of the hotels, hoping for a quiet romantic weekend, as they would have been rudely disappointed. The noise was amazing. The roars and the revving, incredibly powerful engines were invigorating. What a sight and sound. These cars are something else and driving one, so close to the ground at that speed, and let’s face it, this was probably slow in comparison to what they can do, must be a total trip. Incredible. There were lots of other events on different days at different times. Bournemouth was alive with go-go-go, roaring machines, yells of excitement, family and fun. Well done Bournemouth! Nellie had great fun and is definitely looking forward to more Shows. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney

Want to help the rest? Then decide that green is best!

The Great Pacific Rubbish Patch There is a floating island of plastic rubbish, twice the size of Texas, caught in a current gyro between USA and Hawaii. The area is filled with plastic but doesn’t show up on satellite. While predicted in the mid 80s it was discovered in 1999 by Charles J Moore who sailed into it by mistake as he was returning from a yacht race. This problem is not unique to the Pacific. There are a few oceanic garbage patches throughout the world, including one on our doorstep in the North Atlantic. In a recent National Geographic article it was estimated that worldwide there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometre litter the deep sea.

Product of the month

Bio-degradable Bags from £1.99 per pack!

The knock on effect is a catastrophic loss of marine habitat and marine life as well as other wildlife and birds in particular. Small islands, already being swallowed up by the rubbish patches, become uninhabitable and an increasing amount of rubbish is being swept up on our coastlines. Furthermore, it means changes in tidal and wave patterns the impact of which we may not understand for 100s of years. And if we do nothing... who knows where it stops. We have a responsibility to stop this. We caused it! So always remember the 4 ‘R’s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover. And we can reduce the amount of plastic floating around in the world by choosing biodegradable options whenever we can. So check out our website and decide that green is best! Traditional plastic bags take between 100 and 400 years to degrade and even then small particles will likely linger in the environment for 1000s of years. Our bags degrade fully within 12 to 18 months. We stock a full range of bags from large refuse sacks for rubbish and wheelie bins to smaller nappy sacks and dog waste bags. We also carry freezer bags (medium and large) and food waste caddy bags (in 3 sizes) which are even compostable!

Christchurch U3A Vintage Brass A Night at the Movies

On Saturday 9 May popular brass band Vintage Brass teamed up with Tamesis, a young, semiprofessional choir, for a Spring Concert, in Boscombe. Tamesis chose ‘film night’ for their theme, and Vintage Brass joined in with ‘Star Chaser’, ‘Tara’ from Gone With the Wind and ‘Elvira Madigan’. Oldies and newbies featured in the choir’s set list – bringing James Bond to Boscombe with a sizzling medley featuring ‘Goldfinger’, ‘You Only Live Twice’ and ‘Diamonds are for Ever’. Later in the evening melodies from ‘Titanic’, ‘Frozen’ brought a more romantic feel to the evening. Vintage Brass’s ‘Colour of Brass’ and the jaunty march ‘New Commission’ showcasing the percussion, made our audience sit up, while a medley of Beatles hits brought back memories of the sixties.

Invited to participate in two numbers with clapping and finger clicking, the audience responded with a will. Held in the splendid auditorium of the Salvation Army Citadel, the concert was expertly compered by Peter Guntrip, Musical Director of Vintage Brass, together with Louise Rapple Moore, Musical Director of Tamesis.

Blessing of the Waters on Mudeford On Rogation Sunday, 10 May the annual Service of The Blessing of the Waters was conducted by the Rev’d Helen Griffiss. A sizeable parish congregation was joined by Sunday visitors to the quayside: families, dog walkers, motor cyclists and vintage car drivers there for a rally. Prayers were led for the fishermen who sail out of Mudeford to bring in ‘the harvest of the seas’, for the RNLI who save people’s lives in these waters and for all who enjoy our beautiful coastline. Local band Vintage Brass plays hymns including ‘Eternal Father, Strong to Save’ and ‘For Those in Peril on the Seas’.

‘Nemo’, the new sea scouts’ boat was blessed by an intrepid Revd Griffiss who was taken to it across ‘The Run’ in a rowing boat, a life jacket ensuring against any ‘peril on the sea’. Bucket collections for the RNLI did well on this joyful, sunny afternoon at Mudeford.

Gardening Tips

on your

PLOT

Expand your horizons

Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space. Jobs for June:Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.

Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old

carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.
