Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, West Circular A 5 mile walk with great views. It has an optional steep climb up the 204 steps to St Alban’s/St Aldhelm’s Head on the main route. This can be avoided with a small detour. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. There is a small parking fee. Walk details: As you leave the car park, turn right for about 70 metres and then take the path signposted ‘Church and Hill Bottom 1 mile’. Follow this through the gate and field until you reach the left-hand corner. Here turn right and follow the hedge/ wall for about ½ mile until you meet a T junction. Turn left and follow the path towards Hill Bottom. Just before reaching the houses, turn left through the kissing gate (1/3 mile).
Albans/St Aldhelms Head. Descend the path to the dip at the bottom. Here, you can continue straight ahead and ascend the steps to the top where there is a seat to rest and the Coastguard lookout station or you can turn left over the stile, follow the less steeply-inclined valley to the top, then turn sharp right and return to the Coastguard station along the track. At the Coastguard station, continue along the coast path to Winspit (3/4 mile), turn left as you enter the old quarry and return up the valley to the village and straight past the duck pond. At the Square and Compass pub, stay left and the car park is on the left.. Why Easter? Easter is a time to celebrate the new life of spring and look forward to the long days of summer. It strikes deep chords within us and is symbolised by daffodils, eggs and bunnies. For Christians, however, there is a deeper significance because we celebrate the painful death and rising again of Jesus of Nazareth. Death, especially one as horrific as Roman crucifixion, is something we shy away from. Jesus recoiled from it too, but believed his death would bring God’s forgiveness to other people. There can be little doubt Jesus was crucified, but why should anyone remember it? Only because of the outrageous claim of his friends that he came back to life again three days later. This is a unique claim, made of no-one else in history. It seems totally off the wall – but no-one has been able to disprove it. And if Jesus did come back to life from a real death, then he must be uniquely important and his death particularly significant. Christians claim to have met this living Jesus and discovered new purpose in life, with freedom from the guilt and power of their previous wrongdoings. That really is worth celebrating and as Christians in Swanage we invite you to join us. Every church will have its own celebrations (see individual noticeboards) but we shall join together in public on two occasions: Friday 22nd April (Good Friday) for a Walk of Witness recalling the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. We shall meet outside the Health Centre at 11.00am followed by two other locations in the Town Centre. Sunday 24th April (Easter Day) for a Sunrise Service on the Beach by the Stone Pier, followed by breakfast at the United Reformed Church. Sunrise is at 5.20am! Talking about wildlife with
Wildlife in your Garden Gardens are of great importance for local wildlife, providing food, shelter and nesting sites. Even the smallest garden can be made into a wildlife haven with a few simple measures. You will also benefit by having the pleasure of observing wildlife right from your doorstep. A mixture of native and non-native plants flowering at different times of the year will ensure food, nectar and pollen for birds and insects throughout the seasons. Primrose, heather and honeysuckle are good nectar plants; ivy and other climbing plants against bare walls give extra food and protection. A water feature such as a pond, even a small one, is a major attraction for birds, amphibians and dragonflies. By creating a pile of leaves or dead wood you’ll provide cold season shelter for hedgehogs, insects and toads. Attract birds to your garden by having a bird feeder, birdbath or a nestbox, making sure to keep your cat away from these. A compost bin will provide you with soil conditioner and make a home for many invertebrates.
Ladybirds consume thousands of aphids in their lifetime, and hedgehogs and birds snack on slugs, helping to keep a natural balance. A wildlife garden does need basic maintenance such as regular pruning but it is also beneficial to leave some areas undisturbed with the grass uncut, thus creating extra wildlife habitat.

'Open House' at NCI St Albans Head The Lookout at St Alban's Head that is located beside the cliff path between Swanage and Kimmeridge will be open to visitors during the four days of Easter - Good Friday April 22, Sat 23, Sun 24 and Easter Monday 25 April between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm on each day. Visitors will be given a description of what the Lookout seeks to achieve and be able to view the radar and electronic chart displays. Hot drinks and home-made cakes and biscuits will be on hand to refresh our visitors .
NCI - the 'National Coastwatch Institution' www.nci.org.uk is a national charity that operates 44 Lookouts around the coast of England and Wales which are manned by a team of some 2000 volunteers. Dorset is well served with Lookouts at Peveril Point in Swanage, St. Albans Head, Portland Bill and Burton Bradstock overlooking Lyme Bay.
The Purbeck Association of The National Trust It’s a strange but common thing that when you live here you often don’t visit the local places that thousands of visitors come to see. Brownsea Island (pictured) is a typical example. This month marks the end of our programme of talks and Angela Cott, Property Manager of Brownsea Island will be telling us about plans for its future, and perhaps inspiring some of us to visit once again. As our monthly talks end our season of outings begins with a visit this month to Lacock Abbey and Village. The village is familiar as the setting for various period dramas, and the Abbey interior was used in Harry Potter films. Coming up we have visits to Exbury Gardens, Dyrham Park, Castle Drogo and Wisley, as well as one to the Olympic Site in London. Along with our programme of outings and talks we run several social events. Forthcoming ones include a visit to Walford Mill Craft Centre, a barbecue at Knoll Beach and a Greek meal. Our annual membership also remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. Wareham Beerex 2011 This Easter, Wareham Round Table hope to run their best Beer Festival (Beerex) yet. Over the years the format has developed into an excellent event, with an excellent choice of real ales and ciders, which in recent years, thanks to the growing popularity of ciders and perrys has become an interesting alternative for people who haven’t found their taste in real ales yet. The event has grown over the last 17 years from its humble beginnings in the Corn Market, to its current venue at the Masonic Lodge in Howards Lane, Wareham. There will be at least 25 real ales from all across the country with a wide selection of ciders & perry. Held over Easter holidays, the festival now covers 3 days – from the opening night of Thursday 21st April through to Saturday 23rd April. Beerex is Wareham Round Table’s main fundraising event of the year and we help support that by offering the opportunity to local businesses to sponsor various aspects of the Beerex. If you are interested in helping support the Beerex, please contact us! Over the last year or so, we’ve helped Sandford Cubs, Wareham Hospital & The League Of Friends, Stoborough First School and Wareham in Bloom to name a few. We always welcome approaches from people or organisations that need support in the Purbeck area. This year, we are especially lucky that it’s the weekend of St George’s day and will be celebrating in style with St. George

It is made up of various interest groups. Just select from the menus on the left to see what you are interested then look down the list to find out what is available and the contact information. With over 200 listings already on the site and more being added daily it is easy for residents and visitors to find out what is available, where and when. Click on the Diary Tab to see the planned events. If you are active in a group and are not on the HUB then just click on the Contact Us Tab and send us the information. Apart from the listings the HUB can be used to make it easy to circulate information between groups just email it to the Hub and let us know who you want it sent to. Our Young Musicians Competition in St Mary’s Church on the 5th of March showed just what a marvellous range of talents young people in Swanage possess. Eight young musicians competed at a very high standard on a range of instruments, violin, drums, flute and with a very impressive vocal. The Winner Izabeau Rothman (Violin) will now go on to represent Swanage in the Rotary Regional Competition. For many years this club has supported the Music Competition at the Swanage Middle School and it was very satisfying to see how some of the musicians we enjoyed there have progressed to such a high standard in this more senior competition. Swanage Disabled Club would like to thank Putlake Farm for choosing us as one of their charities for 2010 which provided us with a generous donation of £275 after their annual Christmas Market. Also through 2010 we received donations from The Lions Club, The Rotary, Swanage Regatta & Carnival Committee together with various private donations. Thank you all so much it is greatly appreciated. We have been going for just over a year now (after many years with The Dorset Association for the Disabled) and the support here in Swanage has been amazing which is very encouraging for our Committee and Members.
