Dear Swanage, So the holiday time is upon us. Hayden, our son, has gone to Grandma and Grandad’s for a couple of weeks up North. He could not wait to get in the car! When I called this evening and Grandma asked if he wanted to speak to me, his casual response was “No that’s fine”. I guess he is doing well then! Funny aren’t they. I can’t blame him… boat trips, steam engines, fishing, parks, games and undivided attention. That’s what Grandparents are for hey. We are very lucky. I hope if you are a grandparent that you get to see your grandchildren too. So — despite all the fun of the summer (and I do hope we get some more sunshine), do take a look through The Swanage Oracle and get some help in the house, get the car fixed, have a meal out, a new bedroom planned, new flooring in the lounge, a new fireplace, the computer mended, take a relaxing drive to the airport or indeed get lots of things done that you haven’t gotten around to yet. All of the advertisers inside will be very willing to help. Please give them a call and do mention the Oracle! I always love to hear that the local people are getting lots of calls. There are of course many articles from local organisations and clubs who would also love to hear from you. The very lucky winner of the Big Three at the BIC last month was Mrs Ibbs. Well done to you and we hope you have a great day out! This month the prize is back to the meal for two at the Ocean Bay in Swanage. Good luck. Steve, Martin and myself wish you all a fabulous summer! Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

Talking about wildlife with

Bees

The buzzing drone of a bee is a familiar sound and a sign of summer to us all. There are over 250 different types of wild bee in the UK, from the biggest bumble bees down to small solitary bees, and the part that they play in our ecosystem, food chain and economy is invaluable. Bumble and honeybees live in colonies, whereas solitary bees build their own nests and are not dependent on others. Most bees feed on pollen and nectar, although leaf cutter bees feed their larvae on chewed leaves instead of pollen. Some bees, such as cuckoo bumble bees and some solitary bees, don’t collect their own pollen but lay their eggs in other bees’ nests as parasites. Many plants and flowers depend directly on the pollination carried out by bees, as do dozens of crops, including an estimated one third of human food sources. However, despite their importance to us and the environment, bees are facing severe threats and even possible extinction caused by modern farming practices, increased chemical use, disease and loss of habitat. Our meadows no longer support the wide variety of wild flowers they once did, and many hedgerows have been lost in the last few decades, leading to a loss of vital food sources for the bees. Some bumblebee species have already vanished altogether and others are in decline. Urgent action is required to ensure the survival of our bee populations, and everyone can do their part to help reduce the plight of bees. By not using chemicals and by

SO August 2011 page 8

growing traditional garden and native wild flowers such as foxglove, lavender, catmint, comfrey and clovers, you can create a natural, bee friendly habitat. Try to introduce wild vetches such as bird’s foot trefoil and red clover in to your lawn or at least part of it. The pollen is particularly pr o t ei n-r i ch a nd v er y i m po r t a nt f o r developing bumble bee embryos. Smaller bees will prefer single, open or flat-headed flowers such as daisies, scabious and evening primrose. Herbs are also excellent bee plants. Putting up a nesting box or tube is easy and providing a home for bees will benefit your garden as well. For more information on bee friendly gardening, see: www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wg

Filmsteps talk to Dick and Dom Local kids film-making company, Filmsteps Poole, were treated to an exclusive interview with Horrid Henry stars Dick and Dom this month. The famous Saturday morning TV duo were questioned by FilmstepsTV reporter, Will, who headed to London armed with questions from young Filmsteps crew members. They also had good advice for local children keen to make it as presenters; "Be determined, be slightly quirky and unique so that you stand out from the rest." HORRID HENRY: The first ever British kid’s movie to be filmed in 3D, Horrid Henry: The Movie stars Anjelica Huston as Henry’s terrifying teacher Miss BattleAxe, alongside, Rebecca Front as Henry’s headmistress Ms Oddbod and Richard E Grant as rival h ead master Vic Van Wrinkle, with Parminder Nagra as Miss Lovely, Noel Fielding makes an appearance as Killer

Making an Impact on the Streets If you are in Swanage town centre on a Friday evening, you might come across a group of people wearing navy hoodies with this logo:

Follow them a while and you might see them in conversation with a group of teenagers gathered on the prom. The youngsters might seem quite noisy and have bottles to hand or be careering around on bikes or skateboards. The conversation seems generally friendly, though some youngsters may seem less happy. The three produce some cake to share – good for absorbing alcohol! Then they move on, seeking out the places where young people gather. You catch up with them and ask who they are and what they are doing. “We’re just keeping an eye on the young people to make sure they are safe. We are Christians and care for them – but we are not preaching at

SO August 2011 page 12

them; they would soon tell us where to go! Sometimes they ask our advice about drugs or relationships and we try to give an honest answer. In general they seem to respect us. Occasionally we have been able to defuse a potentially explosive situation between groups – especially during the summer when they resent the presence of so many “outsiders”, but we rarely have to call the police to intervene. Sometimes we are asked to escort home a young person who is feeling vulnerable or unwell. Parents have told us they are less nervous about their children as they know we are around. The police too value what we are doing.” You wonder why they should do this, especially on a cold or rainy winter night. “We believe God loves them,” is the answer, “so we want to demonstrate that in practical ways. Perhaps, eventually, they will come to see that too. We hope so – but we don’t push it!”

Purbeck Stone flooring from Suttles – bespoke and beautiful These days, the words bespoke and unique are often bandied about by those who design and build high-quality products for the home. In an era of mass production, everybody wants something different that stands out from the norm. In the case of flooring from local quarry Suttles though, this uniqueness is taken to a whole new level. The inherent characteristics within every piece of Purbeck flagstone extracted from our California Quarry in Swanage means that no two floors can ever be the same. The stone is renowned for being able to be polished to a high-gloss finish, revealing the myriad of fossils that have been embedded in it over millions of years. As well as a beautiful stone floor that will last a lifetime, you will also have something that reflects the area in which you live and the craftsmanship that has grown up there. Polishing takes place at our masonry works in Swanage, following the sawing and squaring process.

SO August 2011 page 21

As testament to its desirability and wide appeal, Purbeck stone flooring can be found in the likes of the British Library in London, the McDonald Institute in Cambridge as well as homes across the UK. Stone is available for both internal and external use in a choice of finishes and to suit all budgets. We can also recommend a local craftsman who can lay it. So if you want a truly unique floor, find out more by visiting us in person at California Quarry, Panorama Road, Swanage BH19 2QS or online at www.stone.uk.com or by calling 01929 439444.

VULCAN EFFECT SPREADS TO A SECOND DISPLAY Avro Vulcan confirmed for second Festival appearance Bournemouth Air Festival organisers have confirmed that the mighty Avro Vulcan will now be able to display twice thanks to the support of S&D Leisure, who are supporting Saturday’s display, and Bournemouth Airport, the appearance supporter for Sunday. Stanley Reeves, owner of S&D Leisure said; “We’re proud to support the Vulcan display on Saturday where she’ll be joining the Red Arrows and Tornado Role Demo for what I’m sure will be another great Festival ‘power hour’. It’s certainly going to get loud!” Sally Windsor from Bournemouth Airport said; “The Vulcan is such a tremendous crowd-puller at every e v e nt she display s at, so the opportunity to bring her to Bournemouth was too tempting to pass up.” The imposing bomber is operated by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who are delighted at the opportunity to display a second time. CEO of the Trust Dr Robert Pleming said; “We have always said that Bournemouth is a real highlight for us. The flight path along the beach is glorious, the huge crowds very enthusiastic and the reception to the Vulcan is always extremely warm, so we’re very

grateful to S&D Leisure for allowing us to extend the Vulcan effect to a second display”. Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Air Festival director says; “What a great addition to an already great flying programme. We’re so pleased to have the Vulcan for a second display, so a big thank you to S&D Leisure and Bournemouth Airport for their generous contribution.”

SWANAGE DISABLED CLUB Swanage Disabled Club have just had a new booklet producedDorset Disabled Clubs - which we hope will be yearly. This has been done after the closure last year of The Dorset Association for the Disabled which covered the whole of Dorset. We felt there was a need to keep Dorset residents and visitors informed that there are still clubs for the Disabled in various areas and to enable these worthwhile associations to keep in touch with each other. Many of them have now obtained their own Charity status (as have Swanage) and are going from strength to strength. Do look out for this publication in your local TIC, Doctor's surgeries, Town Halls, Libraries etc.

Our Swanage sea-front stalls in August: Wednesday 10th, Thursday 18th & Friday 26th (weather permitting) Interested in joining one of our clubs who meet on alternate Monday afternoons? Call Daphne Saville on 01929 425241 for further information.

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Living in the UK we all learn to take our chances with the weather. At PANT we’re lucky as many of our events aren’t affected too much. Snow or rain won’t stop our talks of course, although they may stop a few people making their way to our venues in Swanage or Wareham. Similarly on our outings in the summer months, most places we visit have something of interest indoors as well as out, so rain may be annoying, but it won’t usually ruin the day. Most of our Social events take place indoors as well, but one annual event we always worry about however is our barbecue in July. We hold this at the Discovery Centre at Knoll Beach. For the last two years we’ve had rain and drizzle on the day and we’ve had to squeeze around tables inside the building, with a few hardy souls sitting outside under the sun awnings! This year however we picked the right day, and despite earlier forecasts of rain, we enjoyed glorious weather, as our picture shows. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.
