Dear Swanage, I truly cannot believe that a whole year has passed by. Hayden, our son, had his 8th Birthday last week so we were extra busy with a family bowling trip to Tower Park, followed a few days later with a party at Snowtrax. Life is one big party at this age‌ I wonder why we change it? Maybe we should switch the TV off, forget the news, get the old fashion games out of the loft and actually talk to each other. Just an idea. Christmas is certainly a good time for families and we will definitely be playing board games as well as a few electronic ones to keep our youngest generation happy. I love it and I hope you do too.

Greendale Construction hands back Durlston Castle after a £4 million major refurbishment Dorset based Chartered Building Company Greendale Construction (already famous for major works at Highcliffe Castle, Waterfront Museum and Hotel Du Vin in Poole) handed back Durlston Castle, the centrepiece of Durlston Country Park, re-opening to the public on 18 November 2011. The multi-million pound refurbishment project is now complete following 19 months of major works giving the Dorset County Council run park world class visitor facilities they can be proud of.

The Grade II listed Castle and surrounding country park, situated just outside Swanage and the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, has received a significant Heritage Lottery Fund contribution, extensive work on the £5.5 million project began in April 2010. The redesigned interior now boasts a brand new Visitor Centre, shop, interactive displays, a gallery, cinema room and the ‘Seventh Wave’ restaurant.

Visitors will be able to enjoy new art installations as well as the popular newly spruced-up ‘Great Globe’, a 40-tonne Portland limestone sculpture.

There is also the new Serpentine path, a geological ‘Timeline’ by artist Gary Breeze, which zig-zags from the Castle and features Victorian panels quoting poetry and facts of interest.

The venue is now available to host weddings and conferences offering breath-taking sea views set in stunning grounds. The Seventh Wave restaurant is taking bookings where you can take advantage of a creative menu with fresh, local ingredients.

The Castle was built between 1887 and 1891 by George Burt, who planned to use it as the centrepiece for a fashionable Victorian spa. It is now ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the country park, which was established by Dorset County Council in the 1970s.

The park itself spans 300 acres and is a designated National Nature Reserve, hosting bustling seabird colonies, migrant birds, rare orchids and beautiful butterflies. Within the Castle the new visitor centre will be open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) with free entry and will feature interactive displays based ar ound t he changing year at D ur lst on.

by Hilary Cox, Cabinet Member for Community Services who said “I am delighted to be invited to open the Castle; it is looking very different to the shabby place I visited a few years ago and is an incredible achievement for all involved. I am delighted to see Durlston Castle back to its former glory.”

The opening event was attended by dignitaries including Robert Gould, the Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment. Robert Gould said: “The project has been fantastic for Durlston and for Dorset. The Visitor Centre is a wonderful focal point and view point for the Jurassic Coast.

Visitors to the area will enjoy the new activities, events and features within the Castle, as well as being able to explore the beautiful park itself.

With so much to offer, Durlston Castle and country park is a proud example of what Dorset has to offer visitors and we’re very happy to welcome people to the country’s first natural World Heritage Site to discover the beauty of our coastline for them.”

In a letter to the Advertiser, Brian Barker, President of the Swanage & District Chamber of Trade & Commerce, wrote: “Swanage Chamber of Trade wishes, through your column, to thank all involved the refurbishment of Durlston Castle. What a splendid evening Wednesday last was with members of the team showing us the newest jewel in the crown of the Jurassic Coast. We’re fortunate this complex will be open for 2012, a fitting year, and a suitable new attraction for all our most welcome visitors.”

In 2011 the Music Trust celebrates 30 years of dedicated work in education and encouragement of talented musicians to use their skills and artistry for the enrichment of worship.

The Trust gives grants to assist those truly dedicated to music who, without help, might never be able to achieve their goals. Grants are made to organ scholars, lay clerks, singers, instrumentalists and cathedral choristers.

Stories, such as this one from St. Georges Chapel in Windsor are commonplace: “Henry has progressed beautifully since I last wrote to you and sings solo in chapel on average once a fortnight.

All this is culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen, for the British Legion of Remembrance. He is opening the evening with a solo of Pie Jesu. Many heartfelt thanks for your valued continued support of a chorister.”

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust “It’s all Greek to me”. Greece has been in the news a lot lately, and the news hasn’t been good as far as their economy is concerned. It was different for our members recently though, as we met for one of our themed meals – a Greek one. The staff at Norden House did us proud with three courses of traditional dishes. Jean Fernley, who organised the evening, even managed to get two members to try a session of Greek dancing after we’d eaten (see picture), much to the amusement of their wives.

Events like this give members a chance to get to know each other, and it was good to see several of our newest members in attendance. We’ll be turning to traditional English fare over the winter months as we try something new with a series of hotpot lunches at the tearooms at Corfe Castle.

Just in case you think our activities are all food-related, we continue with our monthly talks, and our regular outings to places of interest.
