Hello Swanage! Welcome to the 36th edition of The Swanage Oracle! Well it certainly is packed with lots of local trades people from hairdressers to dog groomers, to plumbers, electricians, hire centres, computer services, woodburners, blind specialists carpet cleaners, interior designers and many many more! All are local to you and wanting to help. Please give any of them a call for some friendly advice or better still get them to fix a problem or improve an area for you. The longevity of the magazine is testament to all the calls you have made already! Please continue. Do send in any testimonials as we love to receive those and we can print them for you. We have many pages of local information. There is lots going on, so do join in where you can. For example there is a Wedding Fair at Lulworth Castle on Sunday 27th February, there are lots of events on page 6 and there is entertainment for all on page 29. Local Church news can be found on page 14 and you can read about a walk in the countryside on page 18. Don’t forget to send in your wordsearch to try and win the meal for two! Martin, Steve and myself hope you are well and looking forward to some spring weather, after our few cold months. Very Best Wishes,

Talking about wildlife with
Frogs & Toads Frogs and toads are our most common amphibians, widely found throughout Britain. They bear a close physical resemblance, but can be distinguished by several features. Frogs have a smooth, moist skin and long legs designed for leaps and jumps, whereas toads have a drier, “warty” skin and shorter legs, crawling being their preferred way of moving about. Frogs are more varied in colour, ranging from shades of green and brown to grey and yellow, whilst toads are generally dark brown. Providing the weather is warm enough, frogs and toads emerge from their wintering quarters as early as January to breed in ponds. Male frogs make sure they are the first to arrive and emit a low purring croak to attract a mate. Frogs lay their eggs in clumps, covered in protective jelly-like substance, whereas toads’ eggs are laid out in long strings.
The females lay thousands of eggs, but only a few survive to adulthood as spawn and tadpoles are extremely vulnerable. Tadpoles develop in stages in a process known as metamorphosis, and emerge as adults after a few months. Those that survive can live for up to eight years in the wild. The toads’ survival odds are slightly better due to toxins produced by the glands in their skin, making them unpalatable to some predators. Both frogs and toads feed on insects, slugs and worms, caught with their long tongues. Frogs, who can breathe through their skin, spend the majority of their lives in or near water, whereas toads are more terrestrial. On January 25th the Old Stable Christian Booksh op and Commu n ity Cen tre reopened after being closed since Christmas for refurbishing. Opening times are now 10am till 2pm Tuesdays till Saturdays with extended opening hours in the summer. Following extensive consultations and discussions in the autumn, it was decided by the trustees to increase the area available for refreshments and generally improve the layout for display of gifts, cards and books etc. By popular request light lunches are now available, along with a range of attractively priced hot and cold drinks. The improved seating area has of necessity reduced the space available for displaying items for sale, but there is still an extensive range of books, greeting cards, CDs, DVDs and small gifts available plus some fair trade goods. A sustained effort over 25 years has ready saved thousands of lives and protected countless children from the horrors of the crippling disease Polio. “End Polio Now” and “Thanks For Life” are the campaigns by Rotary to eradicate Polio from the world. Out of the128 countries where Polio was endemic only 4 remain where Polio still has a hold. Though It has taken a generation to reduce the incidence by over 99% and to a point where many people no longer remember its effects, efforts must continue to completely eradicate Polio. To increase awareness, a Rotary campaign was launched in October 2010 to plant over five million purple crocuses across the UK. Purple being the colour of the ink used to mark the little finger of children who have received the vaccine. These will be in bloom for the Thanks for Life Day on 23rd February. As our part of the campaign we have given bulbs to Swanage Town Council for planting along the sea front, to the Swanage Hospital garden, St Mary's Church, St Mary's School, St Mark's School, Swanage Methodist Church and in the gardens of many of our members. Where ever you see these colourful displays remember each one represents many children who have been protected from this deadly and disfiguring disease. For more information on this and our other activities go to www.swanagerotary.org and/ or call Mike on 01929 421374.
The Purbeck Association of The National Trust It’s always a worry when you change something that’s been established for a long time. In our case a new year brought a change of venue for the public talks that we hold in Wareham. For various reasons we’ve moved from the Parish Hall on the quay to Carey Hall in Mistover Road. We were worried that attendances might drop, but we had a sizeable audience, including many non-members, to hear the indefatigable Reg Saville talk about the Leeson Estate in Langton Matravers. The new venue is spacious and comfortable, and has lots of free parking, We’re hoping for an even bigger audience for our next talk there in March, when a member of the BSO will talk about the work of the Orchestra. We just need to work out a better arrangement for serving the free teas and coffees that end our meetings. Our monthly talks in Wareham and Swanage are open to everyone - watch out for our posters and listings in the local paper. Our annual membership remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.
Could I be your valentine? My name is Draco and I am a v er y hands om e Rot tw ei ler / Doberman cross, about 18 months old. I wouldn’t be here at all if Waggy Tails Rescue hadn’t sent a van up to the Pound I was in and collected me and some of my friends. We were all about to be put to sleep on Christmas Eve! But now we all have a second chance and, although they have brought me to a lovely foster home - I would really like someone special to love. I love people, but am not so keen on other dogs (and don’t mention the C. A. T word!). As you can see, I am a big, strong boy so need a big home with a large garden, or better still, some land which I could guard for you when I am not charging around! I have been well looked after (my previous owners neutered me and I am also microchipped) and, despite my size, I do love to be cuddled. Could I cuddle you please? For more information on Draco and his friends, please phone 01202 875000!

Swanage Disabled Club would like to thank Putlake Farm for choosing us as one of their charities for 2010 which provided us with a generous donation of £275 after their annual Christmas Market. Also through 2010 we received donations from The Lions Club, The Rotary, Swanage Regatta & Carnival Committee together with various private donations. Thank you all so much it is greatly appreciated. We have been going for just over a year now (after many years with The Dorset Association for the Disabled) and the support here in Swanage has been amazing which is very encouraging for our Committee and Members. Do look out for us with our sea-front stalls in August when there will be many bargains to be found. Bash Street Theatre presents
‘The Lion Tamer’ West Lulworth Village Hall Fri 4 March, 7:30pm
01929 400321 ‘The Lion Tamer’ is the latest in the silent movie repertoire of the award-winning Bash Street Theatre Company from Cornwall. A melodrama full of action, pathos and silent comedy, ‘The Lion Tamer’ combines circus skills, slapstick comedy and an original musical score to bring you a show reflecting the golden age of the silver screen. A down-at-heel showman is rapidly running out of acts for his travelling circus when a stranger arrives in town. When the lion tamer has an unfortunate accident, the newcomer is ‘volunteered’ for the job with comic and catastrophic results! ‘The Lion Tamer’, inspired by the comic genius of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, has been specially designed to tour village halls and small-scale theatres. An Artsreach tour. www.bashstreet.co.uk
David Gordon Trio
Speaks Latin Studland Village Hall Sun 6 March, 7:30pm

Their music is by turns hauntingly beautiful, intensely lyrical and infectiously humorous. A joyous groove permeates every note they play. This ‘Speaks Latin’ project features the trio’s uniquely crafted treatments of entrancing melodies from Latin America, together with Latin jazz ‘standards’ from pianists Chick Corea and Michel Petrucciani. Milonga, zamba, rhumba… a spicy feast for all lovers of jazz and Latin music! An Artsreach tour.
