Talking about wildlife with

Summer Heathland Nights Heathlands provide a unique habitat for a wide range of wildlife, and Dorset heaths are amongst the best in Britain. Summer nights are a perfect time to visit and explore, as the heaths are at their most colourful at this time of the year, and many species remain active until late evening when the weather is warm. Many heathland plants are in their full bloom and glory from July to September. Heather, gorse and bog asphodel create a stunning sea of purple and yellow, with the cotton grass adding its fluffy white flowers to the colourful mix. Sundew, Britain’s most common carnivorous plant, flourishes in the damp, boggy areas, as do many different species of dragonflies. For insect enthusiasts, there is also an array of other invertebrates, including heath grasshoppers, emperor moths and wolf spiders. Birds are plentiful in the summer and on a fine evening you can admire the dashing flight of the hobby, catching dragonflies for dinner. At twilight, the enigmatic nightjars become active. These summer visitors from Africa are a rare and elusive species, and although you may not be able to catch a glimpse, they can often be recognised by the male’s strange ‘churring’ song that echoes through the ni gh t. O th er avia n denizens of heathland

include the Dartford Warbler, stonechats and woodlarks. No doubt you will have heard about the huge fire that burnt around a third of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Upton Heath in June. We have been overwhelmed by the response of local people, who turned out in large numbers in the days after the fire to help to rescue surviving reptiles. Now the work begins to make sure that the untouched areas of heath are in the best condition for wildlife, assess the depth of the fire damage and to manage the regrowth and recovery of the ecosystem for the full range of rare plants and animals. While we will see green shoots very quickly, this will be just the start of a long road to full recovery.

Swanworth Quarry Open Day, Worth Matravers Saturday 16th July - 10.00am-4.00pm Suttle Stone Quarries is opening its Swanworth Quarry to the public on Saturday 16th July, which promises to be a fascinating and fun day for all ages. There will be guided tours of the quarry, demonstrations and displays of equipment, an exhibition as well as a talk on both the history and future of this important Portland-Purbeck stone quarry which was recently acquired by Suttles. Swanworth has been part of the Isle of Purbeck’s stone industry since the late 19th century and we hope the local community will take advantage of a unique opportunity to find out more about the stone extracted from here over the years as well as insight into the day-to-day workings of a quarry. Refreshments will be available.

Communicare needs more drivers Have you had to undergo a course of radiotherapy or chemotherapy that requires attendance at Poole or Dorchester hospital every day for several weeks and with no means of getting there? Just for the cost of petrol, Communicare volunteers will drive you. Unfortunately there are now more people needing this service than people on the team to help. Would you be willing to help out either regularly or occasionally? It makes such a difference to cancer sufferers. This service is run in conjunction with Cancare which supports cancer sufferers in the community. Communicare is an outreach of churches in Swanage to provide support for people with specific needs. In addition to driving, volunteers help with shopping, sitting with sick people to give carers a break, helping write letters for people for whom this is difficult and other similar tasks. No charge is made, other than for petrol costs for longer journeys. Volunteers are drawn from all the churches, together with others of no religious affiliation. Last year Communicare, which is 27 years old, responded to more than 1300 calls. Dorset County Council has now withdrawn its grant due to funding restrictions so all money is raised locally, with Swanage Lions being a major sponsor. If you can help with driving or any other volunteer role, please contact Jenny on 288092. If you or a friend has a need that Communicare could possibly help with, call 422969 or 423747. …………………………………………….

Coastal Credit Union Unfortunately the Tuesday morning outreach at The Old Stable will be closing at the end of July. Over the last 15 months we have recruited a lot of people wanting to invest ethically, but not found much opportunity to support people with financial problems, which is our primary aim. Existing investors can continue using their accounts via Paypoint and a new banking system soon to be introduced. If you need advice on money matters, please consult Citizens Advice, available free at Swanage Town Hall every Tuesday and Friday morning 10.00-1.00. Our thanks go to the volunteer team who have maintained the service point.

SWANAGE DISABLED CLUB Swanage Disabled Club have just had a new booklet producedDorset Disabled Clubs - which we hope will be yearly. This has been done after the closure last year of The Dorset Assoc. for the Disabled which covered the whole of Dorset. Many of them have now obtained their own Charity status (as have Swanage) and are going from strength to strength. Do look out for this publication in your local TIC, Dr's, Town Halls, Libraries etc. Carnival Stall: Monday 1st August - Sandpit Field

IT’S FETE TIME! Preparations are well advanced for the Craft Fair and Summer Fete on 11 August run by Swanage and Purbeck Rotary Club. In addition to being a fun day out, for locals and holidaymakers, the event offers an opportunity for commercial and charitable organisations to raise money. Places in the Craft Marquee and stalls on Sandpit Field are booking rapidly. Those interested in booking places or assisting your local Rotary in fund raising, generally, should view the local Rotary website and make contact. One of the most popular attractions at the Craft Fair and Summer Fete over the last few years has been the trolley run for children up to 9 years old. For various reasons the old trolley run became unusable by Swanage and Purbeck Rotary and the decision was made to replace it. Club members Rufus Stimpson and Bob Foster volunteered to build a new one. Recognising the need to upgrade for a new generation of children they set about designing an updated version. The new attraction, renamed Kart Trak, is themed around Formula 1 racing with team colours, logos and spoilers. Additional volunteers from the Club carried out the painting, after construction, making it a real team effort. The Kart Trak is now 20 meters long with a 6 meter run off ending with a soft landing in a straw bale. There are 4 Karts with 3 based on Formula 1 cars and a Batmobile to add to the fun. In addition to being the star attraction for children on 11 August, the Club have offered the Kart Trak out to other local voluntary organisations. To make contact, for booking one of the remaining stalls ,or helping in fund raising, view the details on the Rotary Club of Swanage and Purbeck website or talk to a Rotary member . For more information on our club go to www.swanagerotary.org an d/or call Mike on 01929 421374.

Remember that fabulous wedding dress Becky Granger wore on TV's Coronation Street? How about the coat worn in the Hollywood cult movie: Bill and Teds Bogus Journey? Now you have the chance to see these and even more amazing artefacts at the famous 'Celebrity Exhibition'. A remarkable one-off exhibition brings together some of the most iconic showbiz props ever to grace the town. Normally kept locked away from public view, the immediately recognisable items will be on show for all to see. Star attraction in the exhibition has to be Marilyn Monroe's Little Black Dress. Who knows what glittering Hollywood events she would have worn this to? There is also the spectacular God of Mischief costume from the hilarious movie Son of the Mask, and the earrings once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. While for Sci-Fi fans there are the electro-magnetic boots from the hugely successful film Face Off starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. Fans of the golden days of Hollywood can see Fred Astaire's shoes and Doris Day's exquisite rhinestone bracelet. For more information, see: www.bic.co.uk

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust A few years ago we took the decision to spend the money we’ve raised for the National Trust on specific local projects. Not all supporter groups do this. Some, for example, give everything they raise to major appeals, like the one that’s just started for Castle Drogo in Devon which needs major repairs. We felt that because we have such close links with the Purbeck Estate, that our members should be able to see the results of our efforts. Sometimes we don’t see the results immediately. The most extreme example is probably the first bull that we agreed to buy for the Trust’s Red Devon herd that grazes Hartland Moor. It took nearly two years to find and buy a bull with exactly the right pedigree. Our most recent donation bore fruit much more quickly. The picture shows our Chairman and Secretary watching a demonstration of stone carving. This has become very popular at Corfe Castle, and we’ve recently paid for several of the protective aprons like the one being worn. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.
