Hello Swanage! Wow, what great weather we have had! I hope you had a chance to get out into the garden and catch up with those things that just don’t seem to get done… We had a super time going down to the beach, having a meal out as well as spending time in our own garden for a change. Do use the businesses inside The Oracle wherever you can. All of the people are local and ready to help you. From gardens to kitchens to dry cleaning. From aerials to computers, mobility scooters and haberdashery supplies! We have just the people for the job! Please say you found them inside The Swanage Oracle. I love to hear that you and the advertisers are happy. There is of course our useful index on page 30 where you will find all of the advertisers and local clubs who are in the magazine. The lucky winner of the meal for two at the Ocean Bay was Lynne Castle! Well done and we hope you have a good evening out. We were there ourselves last week and the meal and ambiance were fantastic! Please do take a look at our website www.swanageoracle.co.uk where you will find a competition to win a Balloon Flight for two! It is easy… give it a go! You can also follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/swanageoracle. Add a comment or send us any local photos especially if you have an event. We will be delighted to see them! Martin, Steve and I wish you a lovely month of May. Very Best Wishes,

Low-cost tips to transform your garden in time for the spring... Is your garden looking very muddy or untidy or perhaps you’re looking for a more maintenance-free area to relax in when the weather improves? Local stone merchant Suttles has the answer! With its array of shingle, decorative stone chippings or wood chippings, you can transform your garden from as little as £29 per tonne. Director Joe Paine explains “recycled woodland mulch can be laid on top of your soil in your borders, which not only looks great but also suppresses weeds and deters slugs and snails. Or, if you’re looking to lay down a pathway through your garden or an area to sit out in, all that is required is a roller or plate compactor, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, some geotextile and some gravel or shingle (we have plenty in our range to choose from!). Whilst the ground is being prepared, you can put the excavated material into bags, which Suttles can easily pick up for you. Suttles can also deliver the shingle or other aggregate at the same time to make life a whole lot
easier and save on costs. You’d be surprised what a difference these can make to your garden!” And from now until the 30th April 2011, Suttles are offering 10% off decorative chippings when you order through their online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk. Just enter the code SWORC10 at the checkout to receive your discount. For further details about the products, prices or delivery, go to the online stone depot at www.suttles.co.uk or call 01929 439444.

Jurassic Jaunt: Worth Matravers, Priests Way An excellent 6 mile walk with great views. taking in the coast and pleasant downland walking around Worth Matravers. How to get there: - Grid Reference 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. There is a small parking fee. Information: Toilets are available in the car park. Walk details: Turn right as you leave the car park, turn left around the base of the Square and Compass pub (100 metres) and proceed along the road for about ½ mile. On the right of the road, cross the stile with the finger post saying Priests Way. Cross the next two stiles within about 100 metres and proceed across the fields, across 2 further stiles until you reach a track Follow this track for about ¼ mile and you will see a stile to your right signposted Seacombe and the Eastington National Trust area. Go over the stile and follow the path down the valley to Seacombe (do not follow the left fork to Dancing Ledge after the second stile).
As you drop down into Winspit, the path is not, as it seems, directly across the track into the base of the quarries. You need to turn right up the track for about 70 metres, then left up around the top of the quarry and onto the St Aldhelms/St Albans Head Coastguard’s station (2/3 mile). At Winspit you can also proceed directly up the track to Worth if you wish (1 mile, about 3 miles in total). At the Coastguard station, turn right along the track to Worth Matravers and walk through the village to the car park (2 miles). Our next guided walk is Sunday 29 May – Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, 12:00 start. All information and future walk dates are online at www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478. For more information on this walk or any of the others available around this fascinating part of the county, check the Jurassic Jaunts website at : www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk Anvil Point From Seacombe
The path to Winspit is about 100 metres back from the cliffs on the right. Go over the stile into the woods, up through the w oods and follow the coastal path to Winspit quarries (2/3 mile).

Talking about wildlife with
Wild Woodland Flowers Many wild flowers are at the peak of their blossom in May, so it is the perfect time to take a walk in the woods and enjoy this colourful display. The much-loved bluebell is for many people the essence of spring. Bluebells form a dazzling purple-blue carpet across ancient woodland, their bell shaped flowers appearing from late April to June. Bluebells can be a dominant species, covering most of the woodland ground, and they also grow in meadows and hedgerows. Although common and widespread, they have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and competition with the nonnative Spanish Bluebell. Growing near or amongst the bluebells, ramsons, or wild garlic, provide a striking contrast with star-shaped white flowers and long green leaves. It is common across Britain, growing mainly in deciduous woodland, and you might detect its characteristically strong garlic scent before even seeing the flower itself. Ramsons bloom through May and June and, like the bluebell, can have rather an overwhelming presence.
Together these and other woodland flowers such as the wood anemone, create a spectacular display for us to enjoy in the spring. Make sure not to miss it, as they mostly bloom for a short period only, before the tree canopies above fill in, blocking out the sunlight. A Little can go a Long Way May sees the time when Christians is Swanage knock your door to ask you to help us do a little to improve conditions for some of the poorest people in our world. Thank you for receiving us so graciously, even though we sometimes interrupt your meal or favourite TV programme. We know there are so many excellent good causes around and respect that you are probably giving to them but if you can support us as well we should be really grateful. Christian Aid works on behalf of all the churches to help the poor regardless of their religion and with no strings attached. Typical is their work with coffee growers and processors in Nicaragua, Central America: Five years ago, Eladio’s community was a group of poor farm labourers. Then Christian Aid partner Soppexcca offered them credit to establish themselves as coffee farmers and supported them to work together as a cooperative. Eladio and the other members of the La Paz del Tuma cooperative now hope that together they will transform their own community. Even though the coffee farmers of La Paz del Tuma have only been working with Soppexcca for a short time, their lives are already changing for the better. The credit which Soppexcca gave has been vital in getting them started. The cooperative has a community fund that will be used to achieve the dreams which Eladio and his fellow farmers once thought were out of their reach. Eladio knows that transformation is possible. He is driven by the example of a nearby community, which has been supported by Soppexcca for 12 years. In that time, they have successfully worked to establish a school and a health centre for their community. Inspired by this, Eladio works every day towards his dream of a purpose-built school, clean water and latrines for all the farming families of La Paz del Tuma. Thank you, in anticipation of your generous support.

Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer. Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins. Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK.
with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 5:00 pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park. For more information call 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk.
A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition. Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image. “I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home. With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.” The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Last month saw the turn of the ‘year’ for our members. We finished our season of monthly talks at our AGM and started our season of monthly summer outings with a trip to Lacock. The AGM gave us a chance to look back at some of the things that we’ve done with the money we raise at our talks, outings and social events. In the last year the things we’ve helped provide include a defibrillator at Knoll Beach, heavy duty gardening tools for volunteers working on the local heathland (see picture), equipment to help children experience stone carving at Corfe Castle, and some fireproof aprons for chefs at local hogroasts that the Trust are proposing to hold. We’ve also given money to help with the design and manufacture of a giant game that will help children understand more about Corfe Castle. This month our activities include a coffee morning at Walford Mill, a trip to Exbury Gardens and a trailer ride along the Studland peninsula. Our annual membership is great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

Purbeck Strings Stanford Quartet Concert Saturday 11th of June 8pm St. Mary’s Church Swanage The Stanford Quartet will be performing great Romantic and Impressionist music in their Summer Concert for Purbeck Strings. The programme will be introduced by Ian Pillow, well known for his pre-concert talks at Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra concerts. The String Quartet in F nicknamed ‘the American’ is one of the most popular works by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak (1841 – 1904) the slow movement is a lyrical masterpiece set between the exciting outer movements. Dvorak’s Romantic music will contrast markedly with the shimmering French Impressionism of Maurice Ravel’s Quartet, also in F, and composed in 1904. This quartet is also famous for its lyrical qualities, but Ravel’s melodies, harmonies and glittering style were part of a new and distinct musical palette that became known as ‘Impressionist.’ You may remember the scintillating pizzicato movement that was used as theme music for Channel 4’s dramatisation of The Camomile Lawn (1992) Tickets are £10 adults, children/students – free. Available from the Swanage and Wareham Tourist Information Centres. Corbens Estate Agents, 41 Station Road, Swanage. Contact: purbeckstrings@hotmail.co.uk Purbeck Strings enquiries: 07964 410 443
Our year has got into full swing with several of our community projects achieved. We were very pleased to be at the dedication the new Guides Centre, last month, where we helped with the rebuilding by proving the new craftsman made oak front door. At our President’s night dinner we were entertained by one of the senior officers from Blandford Camp talking about the challenges for young soldiers and their Signals Training. On this night we were pleased to be able to make a donation of £1,500 to our President’s Charity of the year, “Help for Heroes”. Who in are also supporting the Swanage based “Heroes Haven” project. Also in April, our Community Award winner, Laura Postlethwaite, received a grant of £400 toward her trip to Tanzania in the summer where she will be working on several community and environmental projects. Laura a first year Sixth Form student at Purbeck School and living Swanage impressed us with her preparation and fund raising achievements. Whilst Rotary is well known for its many international projects and disaster relief our help and support to our local community is just as important and a key part of our club’s objectives. For more information on our club go to www.swanagerotary.org and/or call Mike on 01929 421374.

Swanage Town Twinning Association Recently Swanage Town Twinning Assoc had the pleasure of being invited, along with a dozen other Dorset twinned towns to take part in the Dorset Assoc Quiz being held at Piddletrenthide, also included were the Wareham-Hemsbach group and Sturminster Newton. Six of our members including our chairman Mike Stollery represented Swanage and although they didn't win, a very enjoyable evening was had by all, this resulted in these two towns joining our own Quiz night on April 16th. We hope very much that this is the start of a closer friendship between our two towns and we may all learn from each others experiences, activities and fund raising ideas.
After entertaining about 40 of our German friends from Rudesheim at the beginning of June our next big social event will be a SUMMER BARBECUE on Saturday 16th July at The Manor Barn, Langton Matravers. This will be held in the garden by kind permission of one of our members. His garden has lovely views over Swanage and last year we had a glorious day playing Tombola, Whisky Galore and raffle besides meeting old and new friends. There will be plenty of seating and shelter either from the sun or, heaven forbid, the rain. A date to put in your diaries, we will open at 4pm w i th f oo d a t 5 p m , com e e a rl y t o a v o id disappointment and make the most of a lovely event. Tickets will be on sale nearer the time from Sylvia on Swanage 422756.

Swanage Disabled Club have just had a new booklet produced - Dorset Disabled Clubs - which we hope will be yearly. This has been done after the closure last year of The Dorset Assoc. for the Disabled which covered the whole of Dorset. We felt there was a need to keep Dorset residents and visitors informed that there are still clubs for the Disabled in various areas and to enable these worthwhile associations to keep in touch with each other. Many of them have now obtained their own Charity status (as have Swanage) and are going from strength to strength. Do look out for this publication in your local TIC, Dr's, Town Halls, Libraries etc. Our Swanage sea-front stalls (weather permitting) in August are.....Wed. 10th....Thurs. 18th....Fri. 26th. Interested in joining one of our clubs who meet on alternate Monday afternoons? Call Daphne Saville on 01929 425241 for further information.

BBC1’S Antiques Roadshow To V isit Lulworth Castle Lulworth Castle is delighted to announce that BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at Lulworth Castle, on Thursday, 2nd June, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, “Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the 'what's it worth? moment. The AR isn't just about antiques - it's history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.' Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. James Weld, Lulworth Estate General Manager said “We are thrilled to welcome the much loved Antiques Roadshow to the beautiful setting of Lulworth Castle in Dorset, for one of this years venue selections. It is such a prestigious and hugely popular programme, which has been on our television screens for over 30 years, so it will be very interesting to see what the residents of Dorset will bring along! It will most certainly get everyone rummaging around for their hidden family treasures!” The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some great finds such as an Egyptian stone head dug up in a garden worth £10,000, a medieval ring found

on a farm and valued at £20,000 and a Meissen cup and saucer bought at a car boot sale for £2.50 which was worth £5,000. Among some of the stranger items brought along were uneaten pieces of Royal wedding cake and a life-sized stuffed lion once used in a TV series. People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol, BS8 2LR or e-mail them to: antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk. It may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. Series Editor Simon Shaw says: “The team are all looking forward to visiting Dorset. It’s always exciting to see what will come to light on the day. We regularly see between 1500 and 2000 visitors on the day. Despite the high turnout everyone will get to see an expert.” More information can be found at: www.bbc.co.uk/antiquesroadshow
