Dear Swanage! I cannot believe it is November already. Really this year has flown by like never before. I am sure Hayden our 6 year old son wouldn’t agree with me, so I guess I must be getting on a bit! The new kittens which were born last month are truly gorgeous. Lydia, the Mum has been a delight to watch. One day the little black and white kitten, named Fifi by Hayden, tried to make a bee line for the door to go outside. Lydia looked at her and gave her a right talking to, looking at the door then turning to the kitten. It was quite amazing to see. Needless to say, Fifi turned around and went straight back into the room. Maybe I can learn from her! Well we have a great Swanage Oracle for you this month, with dinner offers for the Christmas season approaching, electricians, hairdressers, fireplaces, tiles, bathrooms, Christmas turkeys in fact you name it and I am sure you will find the right person to help you. Please mention The Wareham District Directory when making any calls or enquiries. This makes all the difference to the magazine and keeps it in circulation. The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch last month was Tom Dragon. Well done and we hope you enjoy your meal. Did you all have a good Halloween? We had a great evening with children and adults all d r e ssi n g u p in cl u d in g fa ce p a i nt s! Sometimes we just need an excuse to let out hair down, hey. I hope you all have a great month of November. Very Best Wishes,
Debbie

Suttles Raises the Roof! Suttle Natural Stone, part of the Suttles group, has just launched a new Purbeck roof tiling service with larger capacity and shorter turnaround times. Purbeck roof tiles are usually in short supply and there has traditionally been a long waiting list for the material (sometimes even months), which are ideal for conservation area building projects requiring materials in keeping with other properties in the area. However, Suttle Natural Stone has now dedicated part of its sawing workshop facility in Swanage solely to the production of natural Purbeck roof tiles to meet demand and supply clients with Purbeck roof tiles from stock with reduced production times. Suttles has just supplied 285m2 of natural Purbeck roof tiles, sourced from its own Purbeck quarry, to local developer A.J.S. Developments for two newlyconstructed semi detached cottages in Bell Street, Swanage. The roof tiles are ideal for this development as they are sympathetic to other properties in this conservation area, having met with local authority approval. Suttle Natural Stone’s quarry manager Nick Crocker stated ‘I am very proud of our roof tiles – they’re great quality, authentic and look fantastic, too! As well our Purbeck stone being quarried and produced locally, it
SO November 2010 page 5
has superb wearing and durability properties, making it the ideal material for building and landscaping projects.’ Director of A.J.S. Developments Richard Wylie added ‘We were extremely happy with the availability of the tiles and the efficient service from Suttles. The tiles look great and blend in perfectly with the rest of the conservation area.’ Suttles has supplied Purbeck stone and other natural stone products for over forty years. The Purbeck stone is quarried from their site in Swanage and is exported all over the world for use as rockery, walling, paving, building stone, polished flooring stone, roof tiles and more. For further information go to www.suttles.co.uk or call 01929 423576. The Cottages can be viewed by appointment with local Estate Agents Corben & Sons.

The Fitness League comes to the Isle of Purbeck! The highly regarded, internationally known Fitness League began classes in Swanage in September 2010. The organisation was founded in 1930 as the Womens League of Health and Beauty and changed its name to Fitness League in 2000 and is now throughout the world, and yet there has never been a class on the Isle of Purbeck! Supported by Sport England, the Fitness League is a founder partner of the Exercise Movement & Dance Partnership — which is a partnership with Keep Fit Association and the Medau Movement.
There is an introductory offer of a free class for everyone. The classes are held every Friday morning at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Howard Road, (opposite Jewsons) in Swanage at 10.30am. So come along and try for free & see what fun keeping fit can be! Contact Marion Carlé for further details on 01929 423923 or you can simply come along and see for yourself.
Our classes are designed to improve posture & well-being through central control & rhythmic exercise to music, releasing the body’s potential for good health. The exercises and simple dance steps are progressive, so that no matter what your level of fitness you can start from there and improve. “This fitness programme is exhilarating — I have enjoyed every wonderful minute of it. Can’t wait for the next class!” says Jean Dempster from Exeter. The Fitness League brings noncompetitive classes to Swanage with the benefits of both exercising and socialising to the neighbourhood. Exercising together in a class is a more sociable and fun way to keep fit.

10 Reasons Why Your Cat Loves You There are plenty of reasons why your cat loves you. Ten of the main reasons are listed below. Enjoy! 1. You provide food - Cats love food and they love you for giving them that food. If it wasn't for you, they'd go hungry, and of course, if it wasn't for you, they wouldn't get those tasty scraps of meat after a meal. Those crunchy little biscuits aren't half bad either. 2. You clean the litter tray - You always keep their bathroom area very clean. After all, cats are very clean animals, and they're very appreciative of the work you do in cleaning out their litter tray, as well as the area around it. Poor things, they can't help spraying litter all over the floor! 3. You are a great companion - You're always there to play with them, whether it be with a piece of string or with a toy mouse which looks so amazingly real yet it magically comes back to life every time its head has just been chewed on for five minutes by your cat! 4. You're comfortable to sit (and sleep) on - On those cold dark evenings, you're always there to be sat on and nuzzled into. You're so warm compared to some of the places they could sleep, and the gap between your knees makes a great paw warmer! 5. You provide shelter - They have a whole house to themselves thanks to you. While it's raining outside they can cheerfully look out the window at all the other poor animals that have to put up with the rain. There's always a corner in your house where they can curl up and go to sleep as well. Luxury!
SO November 2010 page 14
6. You're bigger than any dog - You're (almost) always there to fend off any nasty big dogs that could eat them whole and they appreciate this greatly. Especially at the vets when a huge hairy dog is eyeing them up, they know that you're behind them so they'll be safe. 7. You always know where to scratch Whether it's behind the ears, under the chin, or on their stomach, cats just love the way you always scratch, stroke, and pet them. Its one of the things they love most, and they love you for it, and when you get that special brush out, it's just the best thing in the world! 8. You always talk back - Whenever they meow, you always give a consoling reply either in native cat language by meowing back, or by saying something in a high pitched voice that only babies would understand! 9. You provide things to claw - Whether it is furniture, carpet, or a delicate set of curtains, there's always something for your cat to get their claws into. What would they do without all the clawing material you provide...? It's possible that they might consider using the specially designed scratch post that you bought for them. 10. You love them - The greatest reason of a l l , wh i ch en co m p a s s es a l l th o s e mentioned above. They love you because you love them. Well, those were ten of the main reasons your cat loves you. I'm sure you related to most, if not all, of them. Rest assured, your cat does love you, because they couldn't live without you, just as you couldn't live without them! By Larry Chamberlain

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust What a marvellous sight greeted us at Barrington Court on our last outing of the year. We’d thought that there might be some colour left in the herbaceous borders designed by the famous Gertrude Jekyll, but as well as that we found this unexplained display of brightly coloured umbrellas. The house itself was fascinating, being the first ever (and very nearly the last) house acquired by the National Trust. Our outings are now finished and we’re into our winter programme of talks and social events. In November we have a talk about travels in Kathmandu and India’s Golden Triangle, as well as a Cheese & Wine Evening. All this takes place to help make membership of the National Trust more enjoyable, whilst raising funds for the Trust. Just recently we’ve paid for some extra education equipment at Corfe Castle. This will give children a chance to try their hands at stone carving, and learn about the techniques that were used to build the castle. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

With over 250 groups, clubs and organisations (“Groups”) active in and around Swanage there is a need to have one place where residents and visitors could go to find out what is available, where and when. Our new website is now up and running to do just that. Earlier this year our members contacted as many of these as we could find and their information is now beginning to be loaded onto the site. You can take a look with a Google search for Swanage HUB or direct to www.swanagehub.org.uk. You will see that the “Groups” have been identified by type so that visitors to the site can easily see what is available. Clicking on the menu will show you a list with a brief description of their activities, venue, meeting times, contact information and a link to their email and website if they have one. In addition clicking on the name of the “Group” opens an A4 page where there can give more detailed information. Voluntary “Groups” can have a free membership for the HUB and as members they can, update their details, email each other, and circulate letters notices and information to each other. We have set ourselves a target to getting all the information we hold onto the site by the end of this year. If you are in a “group” that can benefit from this new resource then you can download an application from the home page. Or email swanagehub@virginmedia.com for more information .

The best choice for plumbing and heating Here at Gasways Heating you know you’ve made the right choice for all your plumbing and heating needs. I always take your needs very seriously and offer you the best service possible whenever you call me for those jobs you don’t like to do yourself. I have been in the industry for 22 years and have a long history with many of my clients. When you call me for work to be done you are guaranteed to always see the same face, making my service more personal to you. That’s why I am offering, for the next three months discounts on all my service contracts to you.
Special Offer I have several types of contracts available to you.
1-point contract is my most basic cover. As long as your boiler is under 10 years old, I will protect it with this 1-point cover for 12 months. It will cost £10 per month for 10 months of the year, with a £45 callout charge applied to any claim made, and that’s it. No more money to pay for parts and labour, whatever the fault maybe, this 1 point cover will ensure your boiler is repaired and back in use as you would expect it to be. With the same face whenever you call me.
3-point contract is a little different, but will give you the same peace of mind as all my contracts give. As long as your boiler is under 12 years old, this cover will cost £19 per month for 10 months of the year; however, this cover has no callout fee. So if you have two or more callouts in the same year, it costs you no more than your monthly fee for me to attend and repair your boiler. No parts and no labour. This 3-point cover is very popular with many of my clients, as it allows you to budget very easily for any breakdowns you may experience, and remember, the same face every time you call me.
5-point contract again differs from the previous 2 covers. As long as your boiler is under 15 years old, this cover will cost £29 per month for 10 months of the year. However, this cover not only protects older boilers, but will also protect your entire heating system as well. Radiators, pipe-work, valves and all allied controls for your boiler, heating and hot water system. A great offer giving you peace of mind throughout the entire system. No call out fee, on any claim and no parts or labour costs. You maybe wondering why are these special offers. Well, all my contracts would normally be payable for 12 months and all would be subject to VAT, but for a limited period I am offering them to you for 10 monthly payments and VAT free. I will cover the cost of the VAT for a limited period. All contracts offered would be subject to a site survey, which is also free of charge. I can also provide similar services to the hotel and restaurant trades. So if your boiler is a little larger than that in a domestic property, don’t worry we can still get you covered. This offer is available until the end of November, after which all contract prices will revert back to their original charges, 12 monthly payments plus VAT. So don’t miss out and call me today to discuss your requirements. Remember, same face every time. Enjoy the summer. Look forward to hearing from you.

Celebrating 30th anniversary year with the completion of prestigious London project N e w t o n F o r g e c e l e b r a t es i t s 3 0 t h Anniversary with the completion of their latest prestigious project for the Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand. It is a welcome treat in these difficult times to hear of a local company celebrating their 30th anniversary. Especially, when the anniversary coincides with the completion of yet another prestigious project. Newton Forge has grown substantially since its humble beginnings in the North Dorset market town of Sturminster Newton, where Ian & Karen Ring set up a forge at his Uncle’s Farm. Now, 30 years later, it is a leading specialist in the restoration of wrought iron, cast ironwork, traditional and contemporary design with an impressive list of clients including the National Trust, English Heritage, Hampton Court, Windsor Great Park, and Tower Bridge.. to name but a few. One of Newton Forge’s latest projects has been for the Royal Courts of Justice in The Strand, London. Director Ian Ring explains, “This impressive building was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882 and the imposing gothic gates and fences have stood the test of time. Our project involved carefully restoring and repairing sections, making and installing new fencing in the Cary Street area and adapting fences and 3 entrances, such as the Judges main gates, to meet modern security demands.”
unrepaired, “Shrapnel damage from the Second World War has bent and split vertical members near the West Green entrance. This has been preserved as an historic reminder” explains Ian. Newton Forges quiet dedication and skill has built a company with a strong focus on large scale restoration, conservation and building projects. Ian reflects on the past 30 years, “It has been a real privilege to work on some of the most architecturally important buildings in this country. I am very proud of our team who understand their work is part of our heritage and apply their passion and skill to create the best”. He added, “We will be celebrating the 30 year anniversary with a party for our great team”. Newton Forge is currently working on a number of prestigious projects which will leave a legacy for future generations to admire. Tel: 01258 472407 Email: mail@newtonforge.co.uk Newton Forge Ltd. As well as carefully matched wrought and cast ironwork, the modern security demands included installing over 150metre of weld mesh, a turnstile and balancing historical integrity with modern card entry readers. However, there was one area they left

Day Nursery Service For Swanage One area of childcare that Parents in Swanage lack is the all year round Day Nursery. This is an area that Starlight Childcare would like to address. The economic times we are now all experiencing means that any funding from local government to assist in a project to create a Day Nursery in Swanage plus finding suitable premises is unlikely, therefore an alternative way of providing Day Nursery care is being examined.
children to and from the Day Nursery. Age related Booster seats will be used and your child will be well looked after on the journey. Jurassic Jaunt: Swanage East Route 1 Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?
Swanage 2½ miles Medium No
A 2½ mile walk with 2 short strenuous sections but this walk is well worth the effort with great views of Swanage and Poole Harbour. How to get there: Grid Reference 022809; On approaching Corfe Castle from Wareham, turn left for Studland just after the National Trust car park. After 3 ½ miles, just before Purbeck Golf Club, take the right turn, signposted Swanage 2 ½ miles. At the next junction, turn right for Swanage and park in the lay-bye with the large stone plinth saying ‘Welcome to Swanage’. Information:- Toilets are not available here. Walk details:On the left, near the start of the lay-bye, take the small swing gate. Fork right here and take the steep 100 metre ascent to the level path. Turn right and continue along the path for 400 metres. Cross the stile taking you into the National trust Ballard Down area and continue ahead, giving you excellent views across Swanage to your right. Avoid any forks to your left and after another 400 metres, ensure you drop down through a small tree arch to meet another path (here you will have a gate to your right to Swanage). Turn left here and ascend towards the Ridgeway of Ballard Down (250 metres). You have seats available at regular intervals for resting and taking in the views across Swanage and the bay.
SO November 2010 page 24
As the path levels off at the top, turn sharp left and walk up to t he top of the Ridgeway. At the Ridgeway you will get a panoramic view of Poole Harbour as well as Swanage to your left. You now need to turn left and head along the Ridgeway towards the masts in the distance. Follow the path through the gate and drop down, past the Obelisk and follow the path down to the road. Cross the road carefully and turn left, walking down the grass verge for about 300 metres. For the following 300 metres, you will need to walk on the right-hand side of the road until you meet the road junction on your right. Cross the road into the small open area (signpost here for the Coast path 1 ¾ miles), go over the stile, and after about 20 metres, follow the footpath sign to your right. Continue along the path for 400 metres, through the gate, and about 30 metres after the gate, fork right and follow the path down to the lay-by. Please look at the site for future walks www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk or call 07790 474 478 for more details.

Talking about wildlife with
Marine Litter Marine litter consists of man made objects found in the coastal and marine environment. These are items that have been discarded accidentally or carelessly, and their many sources include fishing and other commercial vessels, household and industrial waste and objects discarded by the public, beach goers and tourists. They are predominantly made of persistent, slowly degradable materials such as glass, polystyrene, metal and plastic. The latter, according to th e M ar i n e C o ns erva ti o n So c ie ty ’s Beachwatch campaign, forms about 50 per cent of the total litter and may remain indefinitely! Marine litter is not just unsightly, but a major ecological and economical problem. It is costly to clean up and ex tr em e ly d e tr im e nta l t o w il dl if e, affecting hundreds of different species. The biggest dangers are ingestion and entanglement, and it is estimated that 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and one million seabirds are killed every year by litter. Balloons are particularly fatal to turtles, which mistake them for jellyfish and eat them. Even tiny filter-feeding animals ingest small plastic particles and toxic chemicals from pollution spills. Sadly these toxins are known to accumulate as they travel up the food chain causing all manner of harm to animals.
SO November 2010 page 26
The rapidly increasing problem of marine litter is a global one, and needs to be tackled on a universal as well as regional and local level. It has been reported by the Marine Conservation Society that even on Dorset beaches, marine litter is alarmingly on the increase, affecting our wildlife; dolphins, seabirds and many other species. It is important that everyone helps safeguard our coastal environment by taking simple measures: making sure that household waste and plastic are properly disposed of or recycled, never using the toilet as a bin and by purchasing fewer items with unnecessary packaging. Those seeking to ‘do their bit for marine life’ are welcome to volunteer on biannual beach cleans organised by Dorset Wildlife Trust. For more information about marine volunteering, see www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk or ring the Marine Officers on 01929 481044.

Fresh Youth Initiatives in Swanage The past twelve months have seen the appointment of two youth workers by the churches in Swanage. Tom Bullock is Families and Children’s Worker at the Methodist Church and Lindy Cameron is Church of England Youth Minister. Both are already getting stuck in and known around the Town. Along with voluntary leaders from other churches they are setting up youth groups that are open to all young people, regardless of religious belief: Tetra for children in school years 3 – 6 meets at the Methodist Church Hall in the High Street, Friday evenings 6.00 – 7.30pm. An energetic mix of games, craft, food and discussion make up the evening. There are currently 30 places available so contact Tom on 421767 (e-mail: tom@swanagemethodist.org.uk ) to register. Subs are 75p per week and there is a tuck shop. Juice for Years 7 – 9 meets in the Tower Room at St Mary’s Church (by the pond) Tuesdays 6.15 – 7.45. Lindy runs a fun evening of games and discussion. See http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5iA1wZTSWY. Contact Lindy on 07901 601547 (e-mail: lindyjane100@yahoo.co.uk ) Refresh is for Years 10+ and follows on Tuesdays 7.30 – 9.15. Want no-holds-barred debate about Christian faith? Youth Alpha runs this Autumn, starting with Take-Away Supper each week. The Tower Room is tricky to find so contact Lindy first so you are not stuck outside! Ignite for Years 9+ has full English Breakfast at 9.30am on Sundays at All Saints Church Hall, Ulwell before joining a variety of activities during Sunday worship, including visiting residents at Clifftop Care Home. Lindy and Tom are also involved in classroom support at schools in Swanage as well as being part of the Impact street support team. So say, “Hi!” when you see them around.
