Hello Swanage, We had a great Halloween Party with friends as you can see on page 16. Not only did the children have their faces painted but so did the adults! Personally I think it is an improvement. See what you think… All a good excuse to let our hair down for an evening! I hope you were able to join in some of the fun too. Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, why not have the electrics checked, get new flooring, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, buy a new fireplace, have solar panels fitted, have a bedroom makeover, buy a new sofa or hang up some new blinds? Whatever it is we have local people right here in The Swanage Oracle wanting to help you. There is a full index on page 22 with all that can be found inside. Your continued calls and support of the advertisers really makes all the difference. There are of course other businesses such as restaurants, electric appliances, shoe repairs, key cutting, massage, violin lessons and hairdressers. Go on, treat yourself! We have local community news from the Swanage Lions about the Christmas post unique to Swanage and surrounding villages, the Purbeck Tree Festival, Wool Pantomime and the Swanage Museum. The Swanage Chamber Map is also in the centre pages. The lucky winner of the Meal for two at Ocean Bay was Ross Martin. Well done! This month there is another meal for two and also a reader offer to win a family ticket for a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at The Pavilion in Bournemouth on 6th December. Good luck with those! I hope you have a great month of November. Very Best Wishes,

Debbie

Give blood and help save a life Could you spare an hour of your time to help save a life this autumn? NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are asking people to give blood over the coming weeks to make sure blood stocks stay healthy as winter approaches. With donors more likely to stay at home during the winter and many people unable to donate due to seasonal coughs and colds, it’s vital that those who can give blood at the moment do so. The whole process takes around an hour – with the actual donation taking less than ten minutes – and could save the life of up to three people. Jonathan Sewell, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We need to collect thousands of units of blood every day to provide patients in hospitals across the country with lifesaving transfusions. At this time of year blood stocks tend to dip because people are unable to give blood, so it’s important that people come forward to donate if they can do.” Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for those who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk.

Swanage Lions Christmas Charity Mail Christmas is nearly upon us so it’s time to think and plan the 2011 Swanage Christmas Charity Mail. After last year’s success where a staggering 7,500 cards were delivered in Swanage and surrounding areas, this raised around £2,500 for local charities, we are hoping to do even better. None of this could have been done without the involvement of a large band of volunteers from the community who ran our collection point, sorted and delivered the mail. This year’s money is to be shared by two groups involved with young people. The Swanage Air Training Corps who are very active in the town providing help and support at many local charity events e.g. Lions Country Fair, the Sponsored Fun Swim, Rotary Fete, Swanage Carnival and the Folk Festival. The other half of the money is to be donated to the ‘Y Axis Project’ organised by Lorna Haines who, with a hopeful final financial push, will be able to see the completion of Swanage Skateboard Park in 2012, a facility to be enjoyed by all the young. The Christmas Charity Mail begins on 5th Dec. and finishes on 16th Dec. The main collection point for

SO November 2011 page 8

post will be Tawny’s Wine Bar in the High Street, open daily 9.30am – 3.30pm (not Sunday). Village collection points for post will be Poppy’s Café, Putlake, Langton Matravers, Square and Compass Worth Matravers, Dragon’s Bakery Corfe Castle, the Reading Room Church Knowle, Moonfleet Garage Harmans Cross and Studland Village Hall on Thurs.1st, 8th, 15th Dec. We will also be delivering to these villages. The cost remains the same, 20p a card, so save money, save time, save petrol, and help us raise lots of money for charity and a local project. If you are interested in getting involved in this community event either manning our collection point at Tawny’s, in sorting or delivering please contact Paddy or David on 424975. Without the help from people of the community the ‘Christmas Charity Mail’ would not be possible!

READER COMPETITON JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2011 – MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2012 After spectacularly breaking box office records with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 2009, and following the overwhelming success of ‘Cinderella’ last year - UK Productions brings you a giant production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, this year’s Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. Make sure the whole family is full of beans this Christmas and follow the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street), the boy who manages to sell the family’s only valuable possession, Daisy the Cow, for a handful of beans (and they weren’t even Heinz!). He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies star and Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis, the Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, and his longsuffering mother Dame Trott played hilariously by one of the country’s top panto dames, Nick Wilton better known as Mr Lister from Eastenders.

SO November 2011 page 10

Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. It’s a giant of a pantomime… don’t miss it!

We have a family ticket to give away!!! The ticket is for the 7pm performance on Tuesday 6th December. Purbeck Road Safety Targets Bad Driving Police in Purbeck ran an operation to target poor driving and highlight road safety in early October, with drivers issued with words of advice and fixed penalty notices. The operation took place on Saturday, 15 October 2011, and saw a total of 106 drivers stopped. Of these, 35 drivers were issued with fixed penalty tickets for offences including speeding and not wearing a seat belt. All drivers stopped were issued with strong words of advice about their driving. The operation took place following community concerns, raised through PA C T ( Part n e r s an d Co m mu n i ti e s Together), about unsafe driving in the area and involved members of the Special Constabulary, Purbeck safer neighbourhood officers and traffic patrol officers. Purbeck police sergeant, Jonathan Wasey, said: “We listen and respond to the concerns of our communities and are committed to taking positive action in response to dangerous and irresponsible drivers.

“We will continue to focus on road safety and work together with our partners and communities to make Purbeck roads even safer. “I’d also urge drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good working order as the mornings and nights become darker and colder. Drivers should particularly check that electrical components, such as lights, are in good order.”

Purbeck Chess Club Purbeck Chess Club meets at Mortons House Hotel, Corfe Castle, between September to April each year, commencing at 7 pm. The club caters for players of all abilities, including beginners. Contact Secretary Brian Beard on 01929 425988 anytime.

Halloween 2011

Witches, vampires, devils, ghouls and even the Grim Reaper himself were out in force this Halloween. We got together with some friends and everyone made a real effort to get into the “spirit” of things! The kids had great fun getting their faces painted — not to mention some of the adults too! With some music specially selected to befit the occasion and also a quiz to get the “brains” in motion as well, everyone had a real “hoot”! One of the best bits was “Guess who or what you are?”, where each person had a name of a person or object attached to their back and then by way of asking questions that could only be answered by “yes” or “no” work out who or what they were. Great fun!

PURBECK CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL WEEKEND KINGSTON CHURCH FRIDAY 2nd DECEMBER - SUNDAY 4th DECEMBER There will be a new event in the heart of the Purbeck Villages during the first week of December. Local businesses, community groups and even families or individuals are invited to sponsor a tree for 3 days, decorating it with unique decorations, together with an opportunity to provide some publicity about their group (A4 size). With approximately 25 real trees illuminated, this will create a wonderful sight for all of us to enjoy. There will also be familiar live music some of the time and plenty of seasonal refreshments. To book a tree at the first Purbeck Christmas Tree Festival, you need to phone one of the contact numbers, listed below, to request a booking form and further details. At the end of the Festival Weekend, Fri 2nd- Sun 4th December, contributors will be able to take their tree and re-use it for Christmas. Sponsoring the tree will cost just £15 for a 4’6” tree, which will be available for decorating on Thurs 1st Dec. LED Lights will be provided by the church, you simply need to provide an appropriate stand and the decorations. The spectacular display within St James’ Church will be open over the weekend (see separate advert for times) for viewing and savouring the traditional Christmas atmosphere in lovely surroundings. This is a perfect opportunity for local businesses and groups to advertise their presence locally, as you can decorate your tree creatively to give it a unique theme and draw attention to your own group (eg by providing appropriate items relating to it, whether for business or fun). We invite the local children’s groups, such as Beavers, Brownies, Scouts etc, also Adult Groups from around the Purbeck villages for Art, Music, Dance, History etc to promote their activity through decorating a tree. We look

SO November 2011 page 18

forward to hearing also from local shops, suppliers and services who would like to be included in the Festival. For viewing over the weekend entry is free, but donations may be offered for Julia’s House Charity and also towards church upkeep. Remember to invite family and friends from across the area. Please book your tree early and certainly no later than Wed 16th November as space is limited - simply phone 01929 481197, 01929 481034 or 01929 481629 and provide your email for full details.

Prestigious scoop for Ashley Blinds Ashley Blinds fabric collections have won the Home Decoration Retailers Association (HDRA) for the Best Blinds Collection 2011. The HDRA holds its annual awards to recognise excellence in the home decor industry and the Roller and Vertical collections used by Ashley Blinds triumphed after impressing the judges with their bold and innovative approach. It is a very special achievement to win this accolade as the HDRA does not invite award submissions and instead goes into the market place to search for the very best collections in the industry. Michael Weedon from HDRA said: “There is a purity about our awards because they are voted for by our members”. He went on to say of the collections used by Ashley Blinds that their “approach to consult their customers before developing the collection really has, quite clearly, shone through. This award typifies Ashley Blind’s commitment to search every market place for the best products for their customers. Martin Jardine, owner of Ashley Blinds, said: “it is our job to find the best for our customers. We know the market and the products and our

customers rely on us to find them the very best products at the keenest prices. It also falls upon us to ensure that the products we supply are fitted to the highest possible standards and that our customers receive on going support.” It may be this attitude that has seen their satisfied customers numbers rise to over 12,000 installations throughout Dorset this year. It is perhaps a reflection of their business ethos, to help their customers without seeking any industry recognition, that they have never had any local honours or awards. Martin Jardine commented; “we have never applied for an y award s n or d o we h ave an y memberships of bodies where you can join just by paying. The HDRA recognition is to me the highest accolade anyone could receive. It wasn’t asked for. There were no entry forms. Quite simply the HDRA did their research and made an award for what they found to be the best. It would be nice to receive some local recognition for being the fastest growing blinds company in Dorset but that’s for someone else to recognise. We aren’t chasing any titles”. So, if you would like the best choice of fabrics as chosen by the HDRA, installed by a company who only concentrates on looking after their customers then you will have to call them as they don’t cold call anyone. You can get them on 01929 498029 or on any of the local numbers in your local press.

Stories, such as this one from St. Georges Chapel in Windsor are commonplace: “Henry has progressed beautifully since I last wrote to you and sings solo in chapel on average once a fortnight. All this is culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen, for the British Legion of Remembrance. He is opening the evening with a solo of Pie Jesu. Many heartfelt thanks for your valued continued support of a chorister.”
