Dear Neighbours, A Very Happy New Year to You! We had a great Christmas with my Mum and Dad who, despite the snow made it all the way from Hull to stay with us. Hayden pleaded with Grandma to drive down here which really did help her make the decision to set off. All was fine with a “good run” as my Dad would say. Hayden was very good and woke up at his usual 8am Christmas morning so we were all able to enjoy the day and not sleep through it! Father Christmas was very generous and we were all delighted with our gifts. I hope you had an equally successful and joyful time. I do hear that some have had the ‘dreaded bug’. Hopefully not too many! Steve and I had a quiet New Year with a candle lit dinner for two which is most unusual I have to say. So, now is the time to put those New Year’s resolutions into practice and really make 2011 one of the best ever! Don’t forget if you need anything doing in or around the home we have all the local trades people here to help you. Keeping business local will support our local economy hugely. It keeps the money flowing in our area! If you have a ‘thank you’ to send to one of our advertisers please let me know and I will print it for you. We love to see those. As an independent caterer for over 25 years, we can adapt to most situations as indeed I have had to sometimes deal with last minute anxieties but always ending up with a positive result. Make a Lasting Power of Attorney Have you ever thought about what would happen to your assets and affairs, such as your home, savings or bank accounts, if you became unable to manage things for yourself in later life? Or what if you were to suffer a debilitating stroke, or develop Alzheimer’s? In most instances an application would need to be made to the Court of Protection to obtain a court order appointing a deputy to manage your affairs on your behalf. The process is costly, time consuming and can result in a decision being made that you may not have necessarily made yourself. The alternative is much better, simpler and cheaper: make a lasting power of attorney (LPA) now. An LPA is a legal document where you can give the person or persons of your choice (called attorneys) authority to make decisions on your behalf. You can decide who will act for you, when and in what circumstances, and what the scope of their authority will be. There are two types of LPA. You can make either or both. A Property and Finance LPA (PF LPA) gives your attorneys authority to deal with your property and finances as you specify whether you have or lack mental capacity. A Health and Welfare LPA (HW LPA) allows your attorneys to make welfare and health care decisions on your behalf, but only when you lack mental capacity to do so yourself. This could also extend, if you wish, to giving or refusing consent to the continuation of life sustaining treatment. Once you have decided who you want to act for you, and the LPA has been

prepared, the procedure is very simple. You sign the LPA in front of an independent person such as your solicitor who will ensure that you fully understand and are happy with the LPA. Your chosen attorneys then sign. The LPA is then registered at the Office of the Public Guardian. Once registered, the PF LPA can be used as and when needed. The HW LPA can be used only if you become mentally incapable of making health and welfare decisions. In my opinion LPAs rank alongside Wills as vitally important documents that ideally every capable adult should have in place. I tend to think of LPAs as insurance policies - and cheap ones at that. They are the simplest and most effective way of allowing the persons of your choice to manage your affairs, in the way that you want them to. True, an LPA may never need to be used - all well and good - but if it is needed, which is often the case in later life, a considerable amount of time and money would have been saved, and a period of uncertainty and anxiety avoided. WHO’S BARMY? By Judie Jones They say I'm demented, whatever that is! I’ve heard the nurses talking about me. They want to look at themselves in the mirror sometime. That would give them a nasty shock. That miserable old doctor's been to see me again with his daft questions. “What day of the week is it? What is the name of our prime minister?” I caught him this time though. I said Adolph Hitler and saw him shake his head at Matron and write in his little book. Course, I know full well it's Stanley Baldwin. Silly man, hasn't got the brains of a maggot. Oh god, I can hear that girl with the tea tray. “Nice cup of tea darling?” she shrieks in that high pitched voice of hers. Does she think we’re deaf or something. With a voice like that she could open a can of sardines. I don't want her tea anyway. She makes it all milky, then it’s luke warm. I like my tea dark brown and hot. But she said I might scald myself. I think I've been here a long time - um maybe ten years. I remember my boy said it was for the best. He retired then he moved abroad. Haven't seen him since, but he does send me presents. A box of chocolates on my birthday. Caramels. Couldn't eat them so I spat them down the lav. There's a silly woman who comes in and says we've got to exercise. She sits us in a circle, then prances around to music and tells us to jiggle. Jiggle. The only jiggling I do is when I'm dying for a wee and they won't answer my bell. I don't bother to speak to the other residents any more. Most of them are daft. They sit, all sad and droopy, just waiting for nothing. Can't do with that. Just lately my old mum’s put in an appearance. She sits on a stool in the corner of my room and we talk about the old days. Jam roly poly and pigs head brawn - my favourite foods she tells me. It’s funny I thought she’d died years ago. If anyone comes in, she disappears very quickly. She doesn't want to talk to them either. “Get yourself out of this place” she said. “Do something exciting before it's too late”. Listen, it's those tinkley bells again. I keep hearing them. Sometimes I hear children's voices, but when I look from my window, there's no one there. Well I never! The front door's open. I’ve never seen that before. I wiggle my zimmer over the threshold, down one step and I'm out in the fresh air. It feels wonderful. I go through the open gate and across the road, following the sound of that music. Now see. It's an ice cream van. I haven't had an ice cream for - oh a long long time. “I want a big cornet with flakes.” The man hands it to me and I shuffle over to a wooden seat. “Hey, you, old woman. You haven't paid”. I ignore him. “Oy”. He stands in front of me. “Who do you think you are?” “The Queen” I answer. “I don't carry money”. He rants on a bit more and I just laugh, look up at him and lick my cornet. He goes away muttering to himself about barmy old trouts. I'm having a real good laugh. Now, you tell me who's daft? I've just got an ice cream for nothing.

Chris Packham to Judge Photo Competition – s o ge t t h o s e c a m e ras c l i c k i n g ! Chris Packham has agreed to judge the Master Builder’s Hotel photographic competition which begins in January. This is open to everyone and will be spread over three months with a different category for each month. Prizes will be awarded to the best photograph in the category and then the overall winner will be judged and chosen, with the prize being a free stay, dinner bed and breakfast at the Master Builder’s House Hotel. The Title of the competition is Reflection of the New Forest with a different subject for each month • January – Wild Creatures of the New Forest • February – Visions of the New Forest Landscape • March – Life on the lakes, rivers and streams of the New Forest With beautiful views over the Beaulieu River and set at the end of the grassy street that is Buckler’s Hard village, it is difficult to imagine a more picturesque setting for a hotel on the whole south coast of England. Though contestants can take their

photographs anywhere in the New Forest, they may be hard put to find a more unique setting than right by the Hotel. Accommodation is free if you book for dinner (see web site for more information). The award ceremony for the announcement of the overall winner will take place at The Master Builder’s Hotel in April and the category winners and those highly commended will be invited to attend. January's Jurassic Jaunt A 5 mile walk which takes in Corfe Common and includes the Swanage Steam railway line for the second half of the walk. No ascents or descents of any significance. How to get there: - Grid Reference 958818; Coming from Wareham, turn right in the middle of Corfe Castle, opposite the Bankes Arms Hotel. Follow West Street for about 1/3 mile, turn right where indicated and park in the Pay and Display Car Park. Information: Toilets are available at the entrance to the car park. Walk details: Exit the car park at the opposite end from where you entered it and turn right along the road up to Corfe Common. Turn left through the gate and walk for ½ mile until you meet the gate at the road. Cross the road carefully (road summit directly to your right). Follow the path for about 200 metres and take the signed right fork along the Purbeck Way which will lead you at an angle of 45 degrees to a small wooden bridge at the bottom of the common (signposted ‘Chapman’s Pool 3’). Cross the 2 wooden bridges, through the gate and up the path for 30 metres until you meet the farm entrance on your left. Continue for another 50 metres to a gate under the tree on the left. Go through the gate and through the4 little dell to the stile (20 metres).

Continue through the fields, through 2 gates and you will come to a farm and other houses (1 1/3 miles). Just after the houses, you will see a sign to your left for Corfe Castle. Follow the path through the first gate (¼ mile), continue to follow the hedge on your right until you meet a gate-sized gap in the hedge. Turn right here and walk to the bottom right hand corner where you will go under the railway line and turn right (½ mile). Follow the path which will lead you over a stream, behind a school and into the main street in Corfe Castle. Cross the road, turn right and there will be a path on your left between the houses which will lead you back to West Street. Turn left and proceed back to the car park. Fruit Pruning and spraying are the main Trees and Shrubs Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.
Climbers and Wall-Plants In severe weather conditions some protection may be needed, cut back over crowding shoots and renew ties if necessary.
Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.
Borders and Beds Preparation of beds should be done now for planting, if conditions are good. Annual weeds can be buried beneath the surface, perennial weeds dug out & burnt.
Bulbs and Corms As the earliest bulbs come to the surface, the soil may benefit from a light fork over. This is to break any hard capped soil to let air in.

Rock Gardens and Pools There is very little to be done except clearing and cleaning away of fallen leaves and debris which may spoil flowers & water purity.
Lawns Although it is advisable to stay off the lawns some work can be done during mild spells. Raking over worm casts and raking out moss, also remove last leaves.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Special Sam Sam is about 5 years old but has had little input so needs an experienced collie owner. He needs lots of exercise and stimulation, as he likes to be with someone doing something. He would make a good companion for someone who works outside and/or likes to walk. He has not been socialised much so far so a home of his own would be better for him. He is very affectionate but big and bouncy so no young children.
