Dear Brockenhurst, We have a fun packed Brockenhurst Guide for you this month with Matchams Raceway event coming up and not to be missed! We also have passes to The Big Three at the BIC to be won. This is a set of tickets for a family of four to Sea Monsters, the Celebrity Exhibition and the Rawk Ice Rink! A fantastic day out for all the family for free! Please return your wordsearches by 31st July. Good luck! There are other interesting articles this month about the upcoming New Forest Show and other local events too, so do grab a coffee, some time on your own and have a read. There are of course our many local businesses who would love to hear from you. It certainly is an interesting time for business and the more friendly calls the advertisers get the better they will do and it will help keep our local economy surviving. Pinks have 50% off, Lashmars want to save you paying too much tax, Sally Curtis can cater for your event, Solent House can sort out your teeth. So whether it is the plumbing, the electrics, the painting and decorating, a new kitchen, a new fitted bedroom or just the garden done that you need, you can give the advertisers a call from the comfort of your own home. If you have a thank you for a job well done please let me know and I will print this for you. Steve and I wish you a great summer and really hope the weather is good to us all. Very Best Wishes,

Mobility for the Disabled at The New Forest Show The New Forest Show & Hampshire County Show works hard to ensure that the disabled have good access and facilities at the Show. This includes not only parking safely near to the S h o wg ro u n d b u t al s o h a v in g t h e opportunity to book on site power chairs and scooters to take them around the showground. There are plenty of parking places for the disabled, however it has to be stressed that the stewards can only admit those cars with registered disabled stickers clearly displayed (including the correct pass for the occupant) so please do not try to enter this car park if you are not in possession of a valid sticker – you will be refused. The Show has again invited Wheels for Freedom to be at the Show, being held at New Park, Brockenhurst on Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th July.
TBG July 2011 page 6
They specialise in helping the disabled enjoy local shows, by providing a range of scooters, power chairs and wheel chairs for hire on site. Training will be given to all users of equipment and if a person is not able to reach their base location just by the public entrance to the showground, because they have come by themselves, they will endeavour to bring it to them at the entrance gate of their choice. It is vital that anyone wishing to take up this offer, books in advance by ringing Wheels of Freedom on 01202 670450 or by going to their website at www.wheelsforfreedom.org.uk and following the Out N’ About link to the New Forest Show. This will help the charity try and ensure that all demands are met. If you read this and know of a friend or neighbour who would benefit from this facility please let them know, so they can come and enjoy the Show.

New Forest Association appoints new Chairman The 144-year-old New Forest Association is delighted to announce the election of Peter Roberts as its new Chairman. A former Amenity Verderer, Peter has been involved with the Association for more than twenty years. He has taken lead roles in the New Forest CPRE as well as being a past President of the Hampshire Field Club. He represents the NFA at both local level on the Consultative Panel, and also nationally for the Campaign for National Parks as a council member. A former orienteer, cyclist and runner (he recently completed a 26-mile charity walk for Wiltshire Wildlife - the Sarsen Trail), Peter is committed to developing the NFA’s strength as a major force for conservation and protection. He believes that his task is to help create the conditions for the organisation to bring the message of the importance and fragility of the New Forest to a new generation.
photographer, often combining history, wildlife and the Forest into a day’s walk. Peter paid tribute to the outgoing NFA Chairman, William Ziegler. “William Ziegler's infectious enthusiasm has carried many a project in the last ten years,” he said. “He steered a middle course, when it was needed, in negotiations that led to the implementation of a National Park. His pragmatism then ensured that the NFA worked with the emerging Authority to achieve the best from it. “He worked hard with other stalwarts to set up a 'show team' that continues to tour in the summer carrying our message. He also led the team and was involved in a huge amount of work that made the National Park Societies Conference in 2008 such a success at Foxlease. He has maintained good communications with many other Forest organisations, in particular the Verderers, offering support and ideas for the benefit of the Forest.”
“We must embrace modern technology in ensuring that our successors understand that the pressures on the New Forest are greater than ever and cannot continue without unacceptable further erosion,” he said. No stranger to campaigning, Peter, alongside outgoing Chairman William Ziegler, most recently played a major part in the NFA's successful campaign to thwart the coalition government's Forest Estate sell-off plans. A keen local historian, he has written a number of specialist books and articles on the Forest and was responsible, with Richard Reeves, for the publication of five volumes in the New Forest Record Series published by the New Forest Centre. Peter’s experience includes owning and managing an electrical retail business in Hythe before turning to recycling - running a secondhand bookshop at Ashurst for ten years with his partner Georgina Babey. An enthusiastic user of the Forest, he is also a keen

Chris Packham’s wildlife photography arrives at Moors Valley Country Park A collection of stunning wildlife photographs by lifelong naturalist, broadcaster and author Chris Packham is on display at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood from 16 July – 28 August. Familiar to 4 million viewers across the UK as the new presenter of BBC’s Springwatch, Chris is known internationally as one of the world’s most inventive wildlife photographers. His stated mission is to infuse the world of wildlife photography with a little more artistic content and his images portray the overwhelming and simple beauty of the natural world. “We are really looking forward to hosting Chris’s wildlife photography exhibition,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger. “Anyone who has seen Chris on Springwatch will be aware of his affinity with the natural world. “At Moors Valley we want to encourage more people to get out and about and enjoy our local countryside and we know our visitors are going to be really inspired by his work.” Unlike many of the major photography exhibitions that take place at Moors Valley, Chris Packham’s images are for sale and may be bought and taken home that same day. The exhibition is open every day from 9am – 5pm. There is no entrance fee but parking charges do apply.
TBG July 2011 page 10
Local wildlife enthusiasts will also be fascinated by information now available on Moors Valley’s new website. As well as details of all the facilities available at the Park and a comprehensive events list, you’ll also find a month-by-month guide to the wildlife you are most likely to spot in the 750 acre Park. Why not check it out before you visit? For more information go to the website www.moors-valley.co.uk or call the Rangers on 01425 470721.

July’s Gardening T ips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services
WATCH OUT FOR THE BUGS! Trees and Shrubs Some shrubs which flower mainly from one-year-old wood such as Philadelphius and Deutzia may continue to bloom into July. They should be pruned after flowering.
Climbers and Wall-Plants Clematis shoots are now in vigorous growth, if training regularly secure them to their supports. Hybrids that bloom in spring and summer, if cut back will bloom again.
Roses The chief task at present is to remove faded blooms, cut back to good strong bud and remove all suckers from root stock. Continue to feed with rose fertilizer.
Borders and Beds
Lawns Continue with regular mowing, water if necessary. Treat any remaining weeds with a suitable lawn weedkiller. Give a dressing of lawn fertilizer, if not already done.
Fruit Apples and pears in restricted forms such as cordons need summer pruning. Strawberry plants that have finished fruiting should be cleaned and tidied.
Vegetables Outdoor tomatoes grown on single stem must be tied to a stake as single growth progresses. In warm humid weather watch out for an attack of blight in potatoes.
Greenhouse and Frame On summer days the temperature can rise very rapidly and to keep cool, water floors and benches twice daily.
Make a regular practice of removing dead flowers to prevent seed, this helps to channel energy into more blooms. Lavender flowers should be cut before they expand, if drying.
House Plants
Bulbs and Corms
Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923
Any remaining tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and bulbous irises may now also be lifted, for summer plants if space is needed.
Rock Gardens and pools Trailers can be cut back to control growth, after flowering. Keep pools filled by replacing water lost by evaporation. This helps debris come to the surface for removal.
TBG July 2011 page 20
Continue to water and feed plants as necessary. Keep atmosphere moist around plants with bowls or pans of water near the plants.

TV Vet Offers Free Health Scans to Dogs at The New Forest Show TV Vet, Joe Inglis, is taking his campaign for healthier pets on the road this summer, and will be at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show with his Vet’s Kitchen Health Scan Roadshow. From his new purpose-built trailer, complete with TV screen showing pet health advice videos, Joe and his team will be offering canine visitors a Vet’s Kitchen Health Scan plus advice on issues such as weight control, joint mobility, digestive and skin problems to their owners. Joe said: “Using the latest ultrasound scanning technology, the Vet’s Kitchen Health Scan will give dog owners a unique and accurate insight into their own pet’s state of health and body condition. Because we anticipate assessing over 1,000 dogs during our four month tour at some of England’s top county shows, we believe the results will provide a longer-term scientific assessment of the health and wellbeing of our canine companions in the UK.”
New Park, Brockenhurst on Tuesday 26th, Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th July. 20% discounted tickets are available now on the Show’s ticket hotline on 01590 622409 or via the web site on www.newforestshow.co.uk until July 11th. Remember that fabulous wedding dress Becky Granger wore on TV's Coronation Street? How about the coat worn in the Hollywood cult movie: Bill and Teds Bogus Journey? Now you have the chance to see these and even more amazing artefacts at the famous 'Celebrity Exhibition'. A remarkable one-off exhibition brings together some of the most iconic showbiz props ever to grace the town. Normally kept locked away from public view, the immediately recognisable items will be on show for all to see. Star attraction in the exhibition has to be Marilyn Monroe's Little Black Dress. Who knows what glittering Hollywood events she would have worn this to? There is also the spectacular God of Mischief costume from the hilarious movie Son of the Mask, and the earrings once owned by Elizabeth Taylor. While for Sci-Fi fans there are the electro-magnetic boots from the hugely successful film Face Off starring John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. Fans of the golden days of Hollywood can see Fred Astaire's shoes and Doris Day's exquisite rhinestone bracelet. For more information, see: www.bic.co.uk
