Hats on for Hordle’s Easter Hordle in the New Forest brushed up its French to welcome its twinning partners this weekend. Franglais was the order of the day when 18 local families hosted 45 of their French partners from Yerville in Normandy. Ages ranged from pensioners to just 3 years old, with several new families on both sides taking part in the exchange for the first time. The visit coincided with the Easter heatwave and included a trip to Portsmouth’s Historic Naval Dockyard to visit ‘Warrior’ and ‘Victory’. The highlight of the visit was the Grand Easter Bonnet Parade which took place at an American Supper on Sunday 24 April at the Hordle WI Hall. Everyone agreed the brightly decorated tables with their yellow and white cloths and greenery really set the scene as families tucked into a wide selection of tasty home cooked dishes. Then, French and English alike paraded up and down in a dazzling array of Easter headwear. This very English tradition had really fired French imaginations. Homemade hats of all shapes and sizes appeared, lovingly prepared and carefully brought across the channel for the occasion. English families were determined not to be outshone, also sporting some highly original designs. Judges had a tough job deciding on the best. To round off the evening, the French twinning chairman Alain Gee had all the English in stitches as he practiced his English pronunciation with a few well-known English tongue-twisters before leading his committee in Abba’s ‘Money Money Money’. English families waved goodbye to their French friends on Easter Monday with plans already afoot for the return visit to Yerville in 2012. Many had found new English

friends and remained chatting on the pavement, long after the French coach had departed. First time hosts confessed they had felt slightly apprehensive beforehand but had found the experience deeply rewarding and were looking forward to visiting their new French friends next year. A spokesman for the Association said: “The twinning experience is hard to describe. The depth of mutual affection and friendship that develops over one short weekend is quite amazing and it was fabulous to see so many French children really enjoying their first visit to England and being motivated to pick up a few words of English.” Further events are planned this year. For more information and pictures of the exchange go to http://www.hordletwinning.co.uk. New members are always welcome.

Don’t Be An April Fool! 1st April UK feed-in tariff rise will help fuel solar PV demand By Steve Harvey Anolis Renewable Energy has welcomed an increase in the UK’s feedin tariff for solar technology to take into account inflation. The UK Government has revised its solar photovoltaic (PV) feed-in tariff to take into account increases in the consumer price index. Feed-in tariff changes will come into effect on 1 April this year. Steve Harvey, Managing Director of Anolis Renewable Energy says "We have already seen a dramatic increase in the number of enquiries since the tariff was introduced last year and this higher rate will help continue to fuel demand.” According to Anolis Renewable Energy, the UK solar PV market is already expanding rapidly as homeowners and businesses take advantage of the feedin tariff programme. The new feed-in tariff figures will see an average increase of between £0.015-0.02/kWh of electricity depending on the type and

TBG May 2011 page 15

size of solar PV installation, giving a further reduction in the payback time. So who is free solar electricity really a good deal for? A typical domestic installation on existing properties has increased from 41.3p per KWh to 43.3p per KWh, which means that generators with systems that are the average 4KWp size can look to receive an additional £100 a year from their utility companies. Times that by 25 years means you will receive an additional £2500. The good news is that people who install an MCS accredited system before April 2012 will automatically lock into the higher tariff. So it seems that now is a very good time to invest in Solar PV. Why not contact one of our friendly team to find out how we can help you invest in your future sustainability. Call 01202 683200 or visit our website at www.anolis-re.com.

Dorset’s double photographic triumph comes to Moors Valley County Park The national photography exhibition, Take a View – Landscape Photographer of the Year opens at East Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on 28th May. Always a stunning show, this year’s exhibition is sure to generate strong local interest as the overall winning shot not only depicts a Dorset scene but was also taken by a Dorset photographer. Gillingham’s Antony Spencer is this year’s Landscape Photographer of the Year. He was awarded the prestigious title for his winning shot ‘Winter Mist at Corfe Castle, Dorset’ which captures the early morning magic surrounding the castle ruins. Antony is the fourth holder of this prestigious title and the first overall winner from Dorset. His winning photograph will now take pride of place at the Moors Valley Country Park exhibition, amongst 100 other winning and commended images. These were selected from thousands of entries to represent the very best landscape photography in the UK.

with a total prize fund of over £20,000, an exhibition at the National Theatre and publication of a full-colour book of the best entries. “We are delighted that so many of this year’s photographs not only depict local scenes but have been taken by local photographers who know and love the area,” said Katie Davies, Countryside Interpretation Ranger at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest. “It’s impossible not to be impressed by such a wonderful collection of powerful images and the glorious landscape they represent – especially when so much of it is right on your doorstep!” The exhibition is in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from 28th May – 10th July 2010. It can be seen between 9:00am and 5:00 pm daily and entrance is free although car parking charges do apply within the Park. For more information call 01425 470721 or visit www.moors-valley.co.uk.

A true testament to local talent, the work of nine local photographers is included in the exhibition. Other local images feature a misty sunrise on the river at Wareham, Colmer’s Hill at Symondsbury, The Blackmore Vale, the old pier at Swanage, offseason at West Bay, pylons in the Marshwood Vale and Buckland Rings near Lymington. Every photograph attests to the beauty of the local countryside, while many also reveal a new perspective on an iconic image. “I have been photographing the beautiful county of Dorset for the last five years and even now the Dorset landscape inspires and excites me as much as ever,” said Antony. “I can't think of a more stunning area to live in and to be able to call home. With such a diverse landscape and coastline, Dorset is up there with any other area in the country for jaw-dropping natural beauty.” The 'Take a view' - Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, internationally acclaimed landscape photographer and another Dorset resident. His pivotal role in regenerating interest in landscape photography includes the creation of this prestigious competition

East Boldre Painters Hold First Exhibition The East Boldre painters will be holding their first Exhibition in the Master Builders Hotel on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd July. This coincides with the two day Family Food and Drink Festival at the Hotel, and the Steamboat Rally and the Old Gaffers Rally in the Marina so a very busy weekend with plenty for everyone to do and see. This exhibition will show how varied the work produced by this small local group is, with something to appeal to everyone. All media are used in their artwork including water colour, oil, pastel, pen and ink and acrylic, with pictures including scenes of local interest. Paintings, both framed and in mounts will be available, together with hand-made cards. The East Boldre Painters Group started in 2003 as a group of residents who had taken a class together, and when the tutor left, the group stayed together, deciding to continue painting and drawing. They are all amateurs and their membership is currently 16, with people coming from Lymington, Boldre, Hythe and Totton, as well as East Boldre. They meet on Monday mornings to "do our own thing" and meet up with fellow artists in a casual relaxed atmosphere - a nice way to start the week. They also have occasional visits from professional artists for demonstrations, workshops and critiques and sometimes organise trips to galleries and local gardens. New members welcome. May’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Trees and Shrubs All trees and shrubs can still be planted if in pots but make sure sat in a bucket of water until no bubbles. Remove faded flowers now. Climbers and Wall-Plants Not much hard pruning can be done now, because the warmth is likely to be making vigorous growth, just tidy up dead bits.

shoots, leaving only the strongest ones, mulch them. Spray tree and soft fruits before blossom. Vegetables Main crop potatoes must be planted now, early ones must be earthed up. Plant out sprouts, parsley and celery when hardened off, same with runner beans.

Roses The warmer days are likely to bring early attacks of aphids and also watch signs of black spot and mildew. Speak to a Nursery man on what to spray.

Greenhouse and Frame On sunny days greenhouse plants will need more air and water. Early in the month cucumbers, sweet corn and marrows may be sown for planting out next month.

Borders and Beds Weeds grow rapidly this time of year if not tackled soon can soon overwhelm the less cultivated plant. Still tackle weeds now, little and often is good.

House Plants Move plants from sunny window-sills just plenty of light, water well with a liquid feed at half the recommended strength about every two weeks.

Bulbs and Corms Remove faded flowers from all bulbs and if Summer bedding is going in lift all bulbs as soon as flowering is over.
