While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread. While many of these studies are in their early stages, one thing is for sure: you no longer need to feel guilty about your weekly Indian takeaway.
powderTurmericcompound.has the highest concentration.curcumin
It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala –but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful antiinflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid
BENEFITS OF TURMERIC Eases aches and pains A powerful anti-inflammatory, there is evidence to suggest a daily dose of turmeric can greatly benefit those suffering from joint problems and Thatarthritis.said, turmeric is not listed as an arthritis treatment by the NHS, and therefore is unlikely to be prescribed by your GP. Boosts moods By reducing inflammation in the brain, the curcumin element enhances the flow of neurotransmitters. Rids you of free radicals Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects and fights those nasty cell-damaging atoms. Found in everything from fried food to air pollution, free radicals have been linked to both ageing and cancer and the fewer of them in our bodies, the better. Prevents heart disease

The everlasting poise and performance of Serena Williams.
While the subject of retirement for Serena Williams is always one on the lips of interviewers, it is to the 40-year-old’s unending credit that she perseveres on in a sport that has given her so much, all of which she has paid back many times over. From recurrent injuries, mental health worries, the exhaustion of over two decades on the circuit, the distractions of media work, and the small matter of a young child waiting for her at home, no-one would begrudge the Florida-born star – the greatest female tennis player to have ever lived – the decision to start a new career.
“I just always come back to that phrase, ‘you are a long time retired’, and that really speaks volumes for who I am and the love I have for this sport,” she begins. “Of course, on occasions I have grown tired of it, and certainly I value my downtime away from the court more than ever before; but if the idea of taking my racket out there, of competing, of giving it my all, still excites me, then why would I possibly want to do anything else?” Indeed, Williams’ ambitions on the court have evolved almost as much as the athlete herself. Eurasian beavers Castor fiber were once native to Dorset and are known as nature’s ecosystem engineers due to their activities, such as dam building to create deep water in which they feel safe, having such a positive impact on the local environment. Beavers even have the potential to reduce flooding by slowing the rate of water during extreme rainfall events. Once common in the UK, the 16th century saw Eurasian beavers hunted to extinction for their meat, fur, and castoreum, a secretion from their castor glands.

Seeing the first kit is an incredibly exciting moment for the project and breeding is a clear indication of normal behaviour and that the adult pair are healthy and happily settled in their Dorset surroundings. This local project is an enormous step forward on the journey to restore beavers to Dorset, helping us to raise awareness and understanding of what it means to have these influential mammals back in our county. Beavers have the potential to make a huge difference to our natural environment and can assist nature’s recovery as well as providing other benefits for humans.”
Photo: Release of beavers in 2021 by James Burland
First Beaver Kit born in Dorset for over 400 years Beavers have bred in Dorset for the first time in over 400 years at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s enclosed beaver site in West Dorset. Trail cameras inside the enclosure have captured images of a young beaver, known as a kit, and its mother, exploring the watery woodland created by its parents since they were released in February 2021. This landmark project for Dorset is hosted by Dorset Wildlife Trust working alongside lead partners, University of Exeter and Wessex Water to undertake a scientific study to assess all the impacts that beavers make on the natural environment including river flow, water quality and biodiversity. Since the beavers were introduced to site, they have built dams, creating a wetland to suit their needs but which also provides habitat for many other species, such as frogs and newts which depend on water. Rivers Conservation Officer, Steve Oliver said, “We have been closely monitoring the pair since their release and it has been clear that they have formed a strong bond in the time they have been on site, and this latest discovery is further evidence of this, alongside their industrious dam building activity. The trail cams have only identified one kit so far, but beavers can typically have one to four kits in a litter, and we are discreetly observing their activity to see if any others have been born.

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the a able architectural business owner talks sustainability.about Sustainability in design is obviously a hot topic, yet it comes from a place where the reality is the housing stock in this country is actually pretty poorly constructed, and when that happens it means we are immediately on the backfoot as far as sustainability and carbon footprint goes. This comes about because of that classic play-o between the environment and the wallet – they have never been good bedfellows and never will be, so we kind of get what we expect out of the Whatequation.that means is that while our homes are typically not as sustainable or environmentally friendly as they might be, we compensate for that fact by trying to wrestle back a bit of positive contribution through our own daily lifestyle habits.
next generation of homebuilders, and in that I’m talking about things like high-performing concretes, and cements that have a lot of recycled material in them… like blast furnace slag and pulverised fly ash. It’s also about building with recycled stone and locally sourced wood materials, and investing in craftsmanship rather than mass-market ways of producing what we need.
constructionsustainabilityrealinreallydoescomedowntothebuildingratherthantheinhabitants,andthat’swhatweneedtogetacrosstothe
When we source materials this way, we tend to value the relationship we have with them that bit more, so we are e ectively redrawing the circle in a way that ensures we invest more in what we
In simple terms, that means all of us can turn the thermostat down, or look towards secondary glazing windows, or put more insulation in the attic. All of us can recycle more, can waste less, can grow our own vegetables, walk more, invest in electric technology, or simply just explore the idea of sharing more with our neighbours. All of these things reduce collective carbon and environmental footprint, but most also share the idea of community and a common goal, and I think that’s just as Ofimportant.course,
I’mhave.really looking forward to a new wave of sustainability that goes right from the root, because as much as how we behave as people a ects the environment, the way our homes are built in the first place determines so many of our actions, and the extent we need to go to in order to a ect the same change.

There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile
Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself –you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.Inanera of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation! He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.
In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

The Adventures of Daichi The Modern Magazines Camper Van Daichi loves the sea. That is why we all moved to Weymouth at the end of last year, to be as close to the beach as possible. And what a summer it has been. Glorious sunshine, glistening blue, turquoise waters, golden sand and lots of happy faces. Of course, boat trips are a must and with plenty of choice, Weymouth harbour is a delight to sail from. I may have mentioned that my Mum has dementia. It is a horrible disease that is for sure. Never predictable and always a challenge. My Dad, at age 87 still drives all the way from Hull to visit us and I absolutely take my hat off to him for persisting through the same questions on and on as he cruises down the motorway. Music works well and the sixties songs with The Supremes, Neil Diamond, Buddy Holly, Dusty Springfield and even the Rolling Stones are a blessing no one would ever realise. Singing to her hearts content, all smiles, the long journey is possible… albeit ear plugs are recommended! Dad, having been a fisherman all his life, loves the water. That is where I get my passion from, I am sure. My sister and I try and give him as much time as possible for his ultimate pleasure, pond fishing for carp, but boat trips to sea are also one of his delights. Hayden, our son of now nearly nineteen, used to go on the Yorkshire Belle with them, in Bridlington, when he visited in the summer some moons ago. So, off to sea we went. We chose a smaller, leisurely boat called Josephine so that Mum would not be alarmed. It was just gorgeous. Bobbing along on the calm waters, literally watching the world go by, looking back at the busy Esplanade with people milling around, fair rides spinning, children playing, I All aboard! Smiles all round... Nothe Fort from the water To advertise in this magazine, call 01305 44326626

have to say I just love it. Passing Nothe Fort, on the right, our coastal defence which was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours, makes you feel quite small sat in a tiny blue boat. It was due to this construction that Portland became an important Royal Navy base. The fort is certainly worth a visit but do be ready for the gun shots on each hour or they can be quite a shock! I nearly finished up on the top of Portland (spiritually) when I first heard it! With a prison there, I am not sure that was prosurvival… So, back on the boat, all was well. We continued across the bay towards Portland Harbour. I was amazed at the buildings jutting right out to sea. I believe they were all part of the defence which was put in place. They are pretty derelict now and would need quite some upgrade, but I am sure they would make some very unusual houses. The problem with me is that I am always looking for a project to do… it drives Stephen mad! One day I will retire… but it could be some time. We pootled into Portland Bay where there were huge cargo ships and a naval ship, but then to our utter delight two dolphins jumped out of the water in synchronised dancing. How wonderful! Back and forth they frolicked, entertaining us with lots of ooh, aahs and happy sounds. Family times are all about making memories, and although Mum will not remember, as she was ‘not there’ and will adamantly assert that, we knew she had a good time and loved every minute. So did we. Sailing back, to our astonishment there was a seal bathing on a rock, looking at us in a rather bored way while flapping its tail quietly against the stone. What an incredible day and all here in the UK. I do enjoy a trip abroad, but there are such sights, delights and moments to be enjoyed right here. Dad really wants to go reef fishing. It is on his ‘bucket’ list and with trips available here in Weymouth, I wonder if Daichi can make this go right for us all? I wonder? Let’s see in the next issue of your Local Magazine. Have a great month of September. By Debbie Corney Dolphins in Portland harbour Can you spot the seal? Please mention Modern Magazines when contacting advertisers 27

Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough. 2. Next, pour in enough water – probably 1 or 2 tbsp – to Method produce a smooth, firm dough. You can also do this by hand, rubbing the butter into the flour with your fingertips, then stirring in the sugar and eggs and a little water and bringing the dough into a ball by hand. 3. Wrap the pastry in kitchen parchment and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Set the oven at 190°C/gas mark 5. Slice off one-third of the dough and set aside.
